Our 12th Season: A Season of Change A wise man once said, “Change in all things is sweet.” Triad Stage completely agrees. We’ve always believed that theater can change your life. And this season, we’ll prove it with five thrilling stories of people transformed. But in our 12th season, change isn’t just about what happens in plays. In December, we launched an ambitious Challenge to raise $250,000 which, if made, would be matched through the generous contributions of The Cemala Foundation and The Joseph M. Bryan Foundation. After receiving 877 gifts from 25 states and 51 cities across North Carolina, we exceeded our goal. We can’t think of a better way to say thanks than by continuing to produce the highest quality professional theater for our community. Triad Stage began as a dream... Co-founders Preston Lane and Richard Whittington forged their artistic partnership as graduate students at the Yale School of Drama. After managing a theater in Connecticut for two years, they undertook the three-year task of creating a professional not-for-profit regional theater to serve the communities of the Triad. In September 1999, Triad Stage purchased the former Montgomery Ward building, which had been built in 1936 and sat vacant for almost 40 years. Renovations commenced in the spring of 2001, transforming the five-story building into a theater center now called the Pyrle Theater, complete with a 300-seat theater and thrust stage, rehearsal hall, offices, two spacious lobbies, special events areas and other audience amenities. The theater’s grand opening took place in January 2002 with Tennessee Williams’ modern classic Suddenly Last Summer. Since then, Triad Stage has produced over 90 productions, holiday shows and special events, and has sold over 400,000 tickets. In 2008, Triad Stage finished a second round of renovations to The Pyrle. A scene shop annex was added in the basement. The top floor underwent major construction to turn what was previously a storage center into the 90-seat UpStage Cabaret performance space, the Sloan Rehearsal Hall and the studio and office facilities of WUNC Public Radio’s new Greensboro Bureau. In 2011, Triad Stage purchased a 30,000 square foot building near the Greensboro Coliseum Complex to serve as a new production facility, relocating its scene, costume and properties shops as well as its warehouse. Now in its 12th season, Triad Stage has over 3,000 Season Passholders and more than 400 annual donors. The company has received accolades on national, state and local levels, including being named “One of the 10 Most Promising Emerging Theatre Companies” by the American Theatre Wing and “One of the Best Regional Theaters in America” by New York Drama League; voted the Triad’s “Best Live Theater” by the readers of the News & Record’s Go Triad nine years in a row; and named “Professional Theatre of the Year” by the North Carolina Theatre Conference in 2003 and 2011. Its production of Tobacco Road was listed among the “Best of 2007” by The Wall Street Journal, its production of The Glass Menagerie was named “Best North Carolina Production of 2010” by Triangle Arts & Entertainment and 2012’s production of Reynolds Price’s New Music trilogy was named among the “Best Productions” of the year in Triangle Theatre by Independent Weekly.

Pyrle Gibson (1909-2000) was a

woman with a great sense of humor, who found goodness in all people and beauty in the world around her. Her family always came first in her life and with them she shared her love of theater, music, and the thrill of sports. Co-Founders Richard Whittington (Managing Director/CoFounder) has served as Managing Director of Triad Stage since its inception. Rich earned a MFA in Theatre Management from the Yale School of Drama and has a BFA in Acting and Directing from Marymount Manhattan College.

Preston Lane (Artistic Director/Co-Founder) is in his 12th season at Triad Stage where he has directed over 30 productions. Preston is the recipient of the 2008 Betty Cone Medal of the Arts and is in his fourth year as the Artistic Partner for Theatre for An Appalachian Summer Festival. He was formerly Artistic Associate at the Dallas Theater Center, where his productions included the US premiere of Inexpressible Island (Dallas Observer Best of Dallas Awards: Best Director, Best Production) and The Night of the Iguana (Dallas Morning News: 2002 Top Ten Theatre List).

In 2007, Rich was appointed by the Governor to serve on the board of the NC Arts Council, where he is currently a member of the Executive Committee. He has previously served on the boards of ArtsNC and Downtown Greensboro, Inc. and has served on numerous grant panels throughout the state as well as for the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

As a playwright, Preston’s adaptations have been produced at Triad Stage, Dallas Theater Center and Sonoma Rep. His work with musician Laurelyn Dossett includes Brother Wolf (Triad Stage, An Appalachian Summer Festival, The Human Race Theatre Company and St. Olaf College), Beautiful Star (Triad Stage and WaterTower Theatre), Bloody Blackbeard and Providence Gap. Brother Wolf, Beautiful Star and Ghosts are published by Playscripts Inc.

Rich has taught Theatre Management at Greensboro College and NC A&T University and has guest lectured at UNC Chapel Hill, UNC School of the Arts, Wake Forest University and UNCG. A native of Dallas, Texas, Rich previously served as Artistic Administrator for the Dallas Theater Center and Associate Producer of Dallas’ The Big D Festival of the Unexpected. Experience also includes work at the Roundabout Theatre in New York and StageWest in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Preston has taught at UNCG, NC A&T, UNCSA, Greensboro College, SMU, and the Professional Actors Workshop at the Dallas Theater Center. He is an alumnus of the Drama League of New York’s Director’s Project. A native of Boone, NC, Preston received his BFA from NCSA and his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

In 2010, Preston and Rich were honored with Downtown Greensboro, Inc.’s J. Edward Kitchen Leadership Award. In 2013, they received the Adelaide F. Holderness/H. Michael Weaver Award from UNCG for distinguished public service.

From the Director Recently, I have been thinking about distances—the kind that can be measured in feet or miles, but also, and perhaps more importantly, the less tangible space between ideas and thoughts and emotions. I grew up in western North Carolina less than 30 miles from the Tennessee state line. That is a verifiable fact. But I wonder how to name the distance between being a Tar Heel and being a Volunteer. The state line is easily bridged in a step, but the dividing line between our states of mind sometimes seems vast. These are things I always associated with crossing in to Tennessee: legal fireworks, liquor stores and muscle cars. My Tennessee opposite might just as easily say that North Carolina for him was discount cigarettes and furniture. I know I had an idea that people right across the border in East Tennessee never obeyed the speed limit, were hillbillies and (thanks to the apocryphal stories from classmates at Watauga High School) were much more apt to engage in lascivious behavior. I wonder if the folks in East Tennessee thought the same things of my friends and me. Another distance that has captivated me recently has been the distance between the Appalachia of my childhood and the Appalachia of my parents and their parents and all the way back to Tidence Lane, the first Baptist minister in the state of Tennessee. I suppose I should add to that psychological map, the distance from the Appalachia of legend to the Appalachia of reality, for I love to write in the middle of that particular border land. And since I am intent on determining distance, how can I measure the expanse between the County Mayo tavern of The Playboy of the Western World and the Bull’s Bend truck stop of Tennessee Playboy? The internet tells me it is about 4,000 miles and over 100 years. I think it is much, much closer. We have always been fascinated by tall tales, by feats of derring-do. We have always been prone to fall for a stranger who turns our town upside down with the promise of something better. And, as 24-hour news continually proves, the distance between a criminal and a celebrity isn’t very far at all. And here’s the distance all of us at Triad Stage are eager to share with you tonight: the distance between a laugh and a tear, between comedy and tragedy, between stereotype and truth. We’ve been intent on mapping this distance for the past month or more. I’m so happy you’ve joined us today on our voyage of discovery.

Yeats John Millington Synge (1871-1909) was a poet and dramatist who played a pivotal role in the Irish dramatic movement at the turn of the 20th century. Despite a relatively short career of six years, he wrote some of the most influential plays in theater history.

Synge left home in 1888 to attend Trinity College, studying Gaelic and Irish antiquities. After graduation he traveled to Germany, where he was exposed to the work of playwright Henrik Ibsen and began writing plays that he hoped would be accessible to the common man.

In Paris, around 1896, Synge met W.B. Yeats, who would become a mentor and a lifelong friend. After reading some of Synge’s poetry Yeats urged him to leave France to find his voice as a writer. Synge listened and returned to Ireland. He began to explore the Aran Islands and it was there that he found artistic inspiration in the people, places, and mystical folklore. Considered an attack on public morals and Irish nationalism, Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World opened in 1907 at the Abbey Theatre amid controversy. The opening night audience erupted in angry cries and tried to rush the stage. Synge was attacked in the newspapers and the riots continued for days, becoming known as the Playboy Riots. Yeats said of his friend and the controversy, “Whenever a country produces a man of genius that man is never like the country’s idea of itself.”

BEHIND THE SCENES The production you see is the result of many hours of work by more than 50 people, ranging from the actors and designers to carpenters and electricians to stage managers and administrative staff. Each one of these professionals is a paid employee, making us the largest professional theater in the Triad, and a true catalyst for job creation. Since our first production in 2002, Triad Stage has provided valuable employment to more than 1,000 actors, directors and designers. Of our $1.9 million dollar budget, almost 90% is pumped back into the local economy.

We also partner with local colleges and universities—including University of North Carolina School of the Arts, University of North Carolina Greensboro and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University—providing hands-on experience for their students both behind the scenes and on stage, as well as offering $10 Student Rush tickets to each performance. Over 3,000 students and educators received discounted tickets in 2011-2012. Tennessee Playboy marks the eighth year of Triad Stage and UNCG’s THTR 232 partnership, giving college and graduate students the opportunity to work alongside professional actors, directors and designers.
