The idea of the alkaline hydrolysis facility was born from the inconvenience of traditional burials. Alkaline Hydrolysis is a chemical process, where the corpse goes through an accelerated decomposition and is converted into liquid form. In our case, this is used as a fertilizer on the roof garden. This alternative way of honoring the dead is more eco-friendly, takes less space than a typical cemetary, copes with pandemics and gives the people the right of choosing the way to decompost.

Located on Strefi Hill, in Athens, the building is designed according the repousse of the landscape. The building becomes a contemporary monument, celebrating life. Five volumes consist the structure, and one is after the other. The motion through the complex is linear, starting from the gate, and reaching the path on the hill, just like a religious ceremony. The windows are linear and guide our way through the facility, with the light entering the room with different ways, expressing movement, stop, obsevation or participation.

Near the campus of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, we designed a new building to accomodate the Architecture School. Due to the fundamental geometries found in the surrounding area, we chose the most representative shapes, the circle and the square. The shapes have been distorted and transformed, creating a complex of forms, that summarizes the concept of a village-neighborhood. “Domes”, hosting ateliers and “Chimneys”, hosting classrooms and offices, are connected through the “Shelter”, where the exhibition and meeting area are fluid uses of the space.

The redesign of the Toumba Stream was a challenge, due to the anomalous terrain of the area. We were asked to create a place where locals could spend their time and get in touch with nature, in an urban scene. So, taking as a protagonist the curve of the stream, we engraved a mirrored curve, that would be the route inside this landscape. This journey begins from the street and the nearby alleys. The exploration of the area includes some stops, too. Part of the journey is the info spot, the playground, the bridge, the observatory and the amphitheater.

The redesign of this apartment in Aristotelous, Thessaloniki, has the purpose of creating a space, where the new life of the 50 year old couple could fuction better. Now that their kids don’t live with them anymore, they have new hobbies and more visitors, so they desire places with open communication and smart organization management.

In this research paper takes place the attempt of describing the analysis of the house through its components. The analysis is based on theoretical essays about the house and its parts. The introduction includes three subchapters: the house, the designer and the scene, terms that describe the approach to the subject. The connection between the designer and the domestic environment is intented thoughout the paper. The research question is about what is determining the action of living. So in order to answer, the decomposition of the house is happening, presenting 8 actions of design. These are the stairs, the limit, the window, the table, the chair, the rug, the bed and the bath. Through case studies it is examined the way they produce space. Sketching and personal notes create a dialog with the main text, making a data comparison. In conclusion, the theatricality of the 8 elements is the key to understand how they compost the house.

DIPLOMA DESIGN PROJECT

Supervisor : Spyridon Papadimitriou

My diploma design thesis has the title «Anamorphosis: 8 domestic scenes». Every word of the title is a concept the project is dealing with. Anamorphosis: actions like alterability, change, transformation, modification, reconstruction, reformation of a construction. 8: the different occasions, specifically the 8 scenarios the construction is adapted to, as a result of the anamorphosis. Domestic: the field in which the experimentations of the construction take place, the inhabiting and the investigation of housing conditions. Scenes: term that is a reference of temporary, summer time scenery of architecture. Therefore, the project investigates 8 scenarios of changing, ephemeral domestic structure.

I started this project driven by the observations of my diploma research thesis, specifically the deconstruction of the house in 8 points, that are architectural elements, not equivalent to each other, but complementary, in a way of domestic scenes hosting the actions of living. These are the stairs, the limit, the window, the table, the chair, the rug, the bed and the shower. House and its components, components that describe the house. Later, I realized that instead of enumerate the 8 points of the house, I could make 8 houses, with a point being a protagonist in the design, every time, creating 8 different scenarios. In other words, the project aims to suggest a structure, used as a stage that can host 8 different scenarios, where each time one of the 8 points is translated into architectural space.

The structure can take place on the island of Samothrace, in the pure landscape, as an ephemeral structure, unlike the non-changing image of the landscape. The presence of the human is temporary, occupying the surface of the structure, able to be assembled and disassembled, at any time, leaving no proof of existence behind. This is an exertion of respect to the landscape. In the east coast of the island, there is a point where the local road touches the sea, surrounded by the anarchist forms of nature, creating a natural stage. This is where I decided to create something. This place has no use, neither in summer nor winter. But it is a place where you can see people passing by. It is in fact a temporary place. That is the reason why a temporary structure would fit there. In order to make something that you can stay, I investigate the terms “temporary summer domestic structure”.

The traditional architecture of the island offers important elements to the synthesis, three of them are the free plan, the middle beam and the wooden cabinet. These principles helped to organize the structure’s interior. In transforming architecture it’s important to clarify the stable and the moving parts. On the outside, there is the three-part façade, base - body - head. At the bottom we have the platform, a strong, firm base, that elevates the structure and separates it from the ground. The level change shows where the action starts, just like a stage. Then, a series of horizontal and vertical linear elements makes clear the area of the structure. Complementary to these, the skin of the structure consists of several surfaces, able to be assembled and rotated. At the end there is the roof, which is a 4-part surface, with edges that can be dragged, rotated, centered, in ways that can create different forms of roofs.

The concept of the proposal is death related. Specifically, the value of socializing / gathering [which in greek means synanastrofi, the title of the play], is underlined as an action and signals its cause. The actors discover the true reason of their gathering at the end of the play, when the secret of a death in the house, is being revealed. The big black veiling in the backround, the funeral color palette, the broken mirror on the ceiling and the vertical wall, are all macabre symbols. The actors are sitting in a circle, creating a strong center to the set. Costumes are designed with fully expressionism for their characters.

1.

A personal space is defined by the singularity of existance that subsists inside it. This is a story about the exploration of oneself. Shower is a great example. Its atmosphere is perfectly described by the journey of the water.

40

2.

To tell a story, you must either talk or indicate. The greek language has a vast number of ambiguous words. This video recites a poem that takes two turns, one with the words, and one with the image. And here is where the mind trick starts.

3.

This is a series of examples of the act of tensil. Using a term of the constraction vocabulary, the image helps the understanding of the word, using it in reality. Tensil becomes the protagonist of human interactions.
