The construction and edifice of the new building is part and parcel of the university’s response to the recommendations of the AACCUP (Accrediting Agency of Charter Colleges and Universities of the Philippines) to provide the student’s bigger and more convenient reading areas. According to Mrs. Adela G. Reyes, the campus librarian, the new library as stipulated in the project plan would be a two-storey building where the first floor is proposed to be the reading and book sections while the second floor would be the Audio Visual and Discussion rooms to be made available for small group discussions. She further revealed that the building costs around more than 7 million. “Napaka-unfair nung ginawa nilang ’yan (SPES), nagtrabaho kami kapalit ng wala. s compliance for the CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 28 series of 2010, Commission on Higher Education inspection team visited Bataan Peninsula State University Dinalupihan Campus last June 10 to inspect and assess the higher education programs. In order to promote, foster and protect the right of citizens to relevant and affordable quality higher education, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) had joint to implement an inspection and evaluation of State Universities and Colleges (SUC) offering board programs being offered in accordance with the pertinent provisions of Republic Act 7722. According to the CMO No. 40 series of 2010 Starting January 2011, all State Universities and Colleges (this includes BPSU-DC) shall submit to the CHED office of the Executive Director through the CHED Regional Offices (CHEDRO) the following documents: (a) number of students currently enrolled; (b) performance in the licensure examinations; (c) accreditation of the board programs and; (d) latest evaluation report by the Regional Quality Assurance Team (RQuAT), if any. Roman, BPSUDC’s Campus Director, said in an interview. The mandate given by the national government for the higher educational institutions is to have commitment to transformational leadership that puts education as the central strategy for investing the Filipino people, reducing poverty and building national competiveness. In addition, accreditation for the level three status of the education programs will be conducted on 2015 for faster improvement and to provide quality education. “Yung OSA at yung registrar ililipat na dun sa taas [old library building], tapos yung mga clinic pinalilipat ko para mas lumaki yung space para mas ma-improve na din ang student services. Ayun ang target natin in preparation na din for accre.”, Dr. Roman explained.

In order to promote gender sensitivity,
GFPS guides the non-teaching personnel about gender equality As per agreement and as specified in University Memorandum No. 368-A, Series of 2014, the Bataan Peninsula State University Gender and Development Focal Point System (BPSU-GFPS) accomplished the session four of the Basic Seminar on Gender and Development for selected non-teaching personnel of BPSU originally scheduled in Orani campus but moved to Dinalupihan due to announced power interruption last April 23. In order to create awareness among the non-teaching personnel about basic concepts of sex and gender as critical ground working and to develop them as gender sensitive professionals and individuals, the BPSU GFPS educated the non-teaching personnel about the two modules: Sex and Gender and Gender Socialization. “Seemingly, nagustuhan ng mga nonteaching personnel yung mga natutunan nila. May mga na-realize sila na mga practice nila na nagiging bias pala sila”, Dr. Perla B.

According to the narrative report of the seminar, the participants said that the activities were good and the discussants clearly explained each topic. “Besides that we are giving the training, we also acquire other skills”, Dr. Estrella added. Overall, after the nine sessions of seminar conducted in different BPSU campuses, there were 236 participants out of 271 non-teaching staff (116 males, 106 females and 14 did not provide information on their sex). Who Says It’s a Waste?

n the effort to further the quality of the library services under Area 7 of the Accreditation process, Bataan Peninsula State University – Dinalupihan Campus spent seven million pesos for the construction of the new library building which started last October 2013 and was finished last May 2014. As a considerable priority project of BPSU – DC, the seven million-peso library building unimaginably had a bunch of allegations ever before it has been constructed. Even simply the students had violent reactions regarding the proposal, looking at the point that there are more important things the school should be responding, over adding more structures. All of these only testifies how open even a small college man to the issues affecting the University. It is remembered that Dr. Ma. Fe V. Roman, our Campus Director, stressed out a year ago, that the University President, Dr. Delfin O. Magpantay and her wanted to improve the library services to respond to the needs of the students. With several deliberations, the said plan came up with a proposal, funded by the school to further build a better concrete study area. These are just few things a freshman may not be knowing as he sits comfortably on a resilient chair while concentratedly reviewing on a wide table with dividers, having a pair of two horsepower air conditioning units per floor, where distraction-causing heat are lessened, worry free of the thing left on a well-organized bag depository. And yet, behind their efforts and deliverance, negative comments and responses sprouted, leading many to misconceptions. Many said that it is all nonsensical to replace a library and Audio Visual Room which still functions and is standing sturdily. We can never deny though that probably they have a point, because it really is still useful despite its oldness. It’s also absurd to just leave it without being used, particularly now that rooms to accommodate freshmen are suffering from shortage, causing the secondary education students who belongs to the last section be mixed with other majors. It is also a problem for some students to deal with the said priority project for the reason of they need other things more than it. They complain about the comfort rooms to at least improve the cubicles and water outlets including flushes, and the state of the college buildings which has improper blindings, broken windows, and unstable ceilings, causing interruptions during rainy season. Some are also aware that the higher should have just located it to somewhere without taking over the old basketball court, nor use the funds for establishing buildings to ammend the transactions circulating within the campus. On the other hand, the publication firmly believes that all their works and bringing out money are all worth it for it served as a key for the students to love the place they used to ignore before, and be motivated with the sufficient factors. We are now having a bigger space for us to move better, facilities to answer our needs inside for reviewing, books for researches we may conduct, and most especially, the staff who would be taking charge of the order of the whole place. What’s so wrong with spending money due to a purpose of improving the face of the school, as well as the quality of education being offered by it, which everyone undeniably longs for? After all, it’s still not about the desire to brag about the beauty of our school, but to rely with the recommendations of the Accrediting Agency of Charter Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (AACCUP) to provide the students as big and more convenient reading areas as what we enjoy now. Try checking out the entirety of this two-storey house of knowledge and you’ll surely be amazed with every single thing it contains. You’ll realize that it doesn’t ever end with the exterior appearance of the building for every detail of it is finely done. And besides, as we all know, it also alarms everyone to visit after having a snack for its glance is what you’ll have as you take your first step out the canteen- it’s placed in a perfect spot. Nevertheless, many kept their grievances. But behind those emotions, who wouldn’t admit that it is worth it? Compare seven million pesos to billions allotted for Pork which was kept by politicians into their own pockets, doesn’t this project have a right to be made possible without any magic? Would it be a problem even funds are used practically? Think twice of your judgment… We can never deny how our campus has come into progress year by year, making it a better school to be enrolled at. Hopefully with this newly constructed library, a better DC and its people is what may stand out in the near future.

campus journalist is free to say whatever he wants to say; what happens next after hesays it is the problem. The newspaper is a very influential medium. It is influential because it has the ability to persuade the way people think and act.The press, comprising of the journalists and staff writers, are known to be the informant of news, animator of democracy and revealer of genuineness. As journalists, we have the responsibility to present what we see, to state what we heard and to write what we witnessed. In order to deliver the truth, we have to present every single statement based on just and honest discussions. There is only a thin thread that separates truth from faux, so we have to be careful. We have to determine the gravity of the information that we should give our readers. The perilous life of a reporter offers no guarantee. They may be alive if they handle to survive the tribunal but they may die if they use their mouth in the wrong side. All the way through historical decades which the Philippines witnessed, some journalists who have shown great courage in narrating the truth have also experienced great troubles, wherein, their lives where put into danger. In the Philippine setting, there are many press people who have been part of the history of our motherland because of their guts in the vindication of the truth. In the time of the Marcos regime, Filipino journalists were silenced. Through martial law, the press has been controllable. After the 1986 People’s Revolution began the incremental change that let the press to come out of the shadows. However, the freedom that they’ve experienced came out against the awful consequences of the rigid political status quo.
The suppressing of the press is decipherable even in an international scale. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the Philippines, in 2013, ranked third in the world of impunity. In the report, 76 Filipino journalists have been killed in the country since 1992. A source for this indifference can be found in main occurrence: the Maguindanao massacre on November 2009. According to CPJ, the massacre is the single deadliest event for the press since 1992. In a campus situation, studentjournalists play the equivalent role as account writers of the university. Whilst the student councils draw and execute action into reality, student writers report about the results of their actions. Just like the responsibility of the press in society, the student press providespertinent information to students so that they could make knowledgeableand wellversed verdicts. There are numerous issues involving students. Campus press should aidto make sensible of the reality not only by giving the data but also the analysis. As campus journalist, we haveviewed the most tuneful triumphs and the harshest breakdowns of the most prominent and wellknown persons in the university. Oureyes have seen the sorest reality and the most brilliant truth. Our ears have heard the painful actuality and the wonderful lies that came out of the extremelylook upon and the exceptionally disavowed. Our mouths have spoken what they saw, whether amusingor disappointing. Our hands have printed the inerasable marks that our universities have accomplished through the years. As part of the press, we are one of the torch bearers of the school. Fierce and Love, Jan Adams.

Halika, silipin mo to.
Nagugulumihanan. Damang-dama natin ang “Sinners and Saint” t’wing Orientation, drug symposium, at Acquintance. Sabi-
hin na natin na medyo malaki ‘yon at TAKE NOTE “dalawang Semester tayo nagbabayad no’n.” Promise.
BOOM PANES.

BREAK-FREE Boy. Girl. Lesbian. Bi-sexual. Gay. hese are the different gender preferences in our society, nowadays. With these sorts, where do you think you belong? If you cannot answer, perhaps you are still suffering from a critical process called identity crisis. Or maybe, you already figured it out, yet the fear of rejection hinders you to come out of the box? If it’s the other way around, then congratulations dude! You do have a brave heart. Let’s shrug off boys, girls, lesbians, and bi-sexuals. We are going to deal with “gays”. Gays are born as males, biologically, but decided to grow the other way around, as a girl, particularly. Every time I heard rumors about a hot guy turned into gay, I usually make face and let out a deep sigh of dismay. Good-looking guys who are real guys at the same time are now close to extinction, I must say. [Guffaws]. Funny thing is that the better the guy looks, the greater the chance he is gay. Ironic. That’s the right word to describe this phenomenon. So, if you are walking around, hoping to fish a guy, then fortunately, or maybe not, accidentally saw a breath-taking guy with lean muscles all over his body, glance for the second time, stare at his hands. If his fingers flip in a graceful way, far graceful than you do, then continue strolling. Girl, believe me, he’s a gay. I know one who doesn’t dress up like a girl, talks like a girl, nor color

himself with make-ups. Looking at him, you will not notice his real identity. He hides his real identity for the reason I don’t have the slightest idea and pretends that he’s one of the boys. It didn’t slip through my mind that such a manly guy bears a soft heart in his chest. In fact, he smokes like other guys, typically with groups. Actually, the moment my friend broke the news I laughed hard and almost cry, not because I mocked his identity but because it did not slip on my mind the idea of him being gay. After the big revelation, I was subconsciously observing his actions; the way he flip his hair, the way he fix his polo shirt and all those moves that could lead me to confirmation. I witnessed some signs. From there, I realized it is CONFIRMED! Whenever I spotted one, a bell in my head would ring like “TING!” Gay Alert. I then asked myself, “Am I such a fool not to notice? Or maybe, I was not really paying attention to that person.” Why not reveal his real identity? If he would have the guts to tell the truth then I might have said he’s gorgeous instead of saying YUCK whenever he touches innocent guys. I know the way he lays hands on boys has some hidden agenda. [Laughs]. If he will confess the real him, perhaps, my judgement would turn into vanish. I’m not malicious. Definitely not. Just stating facts based on observation. I don’t hate the person, of course.
Why should I? What I hate is his petty show. I know I’m not the only eyewitness of these cases. Lots of us shake our heads in disapproval. Aside from this, what else can we do? We are not the ones who should tap their shoulders and summon them to bolt out of the dark room. They have to find courage by and in themselves. They should be the ones to unveil the blanket of falsehood that has been keeping them away to live in a happier and worry-free life. Trust is also one thing. They have to trust the people around them. In the process, there’s a chance that someone will despise them, yet, surely, someone will come in replacement. The outcome will either make or break you. For the hideous people around, all you have to do is prepare yourself and accept what lies ahead. If the result shattered you into pieces, recollect yourself and stand firm. After all, it’s you who has to live your life to its fullest. The good part in showing your true color is that you will know who your true friends are. People who are ready to accept you for who you really are and the person you pretend to be. Life is not a show. Tickets are not real. But, we will know the true definition of life when we live it the way we want it to be. Let us not conform to other’s standards instead live our life, unbounded and limitless.
#SELFIELORD
Uploading… 10%. 20%. 50%. 70%. 100%. POST. When we browse the social networking sites, we often stumble on countless pictures featuring the owners of the accounts, themselves. In Korea, it is known as “selca”, short term for cellphone and camera, but for the Filipinos, it is called as “selfie.” Undeniably, taking photos has become part of daily life of the Filipinos. The advancement of the world today brought by technologies has given us various medium to express ourselves. From handy laptops, tablets, netbooks, iPods, iPads, joined by wi-fi zones; you just need to find a hotspot, and you are ready to go. Whenever and wherever we are, we surely won’t miss the fab and trends. Wacky. Duck Face. Happy face.Sad Face. Fierce. These are few common pose of the netizens or the people who usually indulge themselves in this phenomenon. Basically, how do you want to be seen by other people in your photos, will depend on your mood and trip; the more it is creative and unusual, the more chance it will gain likes and shares, and become viral. Yet, as some love to capture themselves, some are against them. The people who dislike this sensation called the selfie fanatics “attention-seekers,” for they mostly display themselves several times a day. This had tickled the idea of Michael V. and later on conceptualized the idea of Donya Ina, a segment of the sitcom “Bubble Gang.” Oftentimes, Donya Ina nag her daughter for the photos she usually upload-- be it a food, be it her feet, be it her armpit, be it
her outfit, all falls from the fact that all of these highlights no one but herself. At the end of the sermon, Donya Ina always locks the discussion with the famous line “Anong pagpapapansin ‘yan Nak? Paki-explain. Labyu!” Truly, flaunting your photos has its banes. As the maxim goes, “We cannot please everybody.” On the other hand, one thing that has magnified the heat of “selfies” is the cellphone applications that enhance the face of the person taking the photo. In the midst of this era, camera360, retrica, and the like boomed the “selfie” craze, for this mobile apps have filters that will make your pimples invisible, will make your skin fairer, will makes your lips sexier and many more magic with just a tap or a click. The people, who were shy before, now have the guts to expose their façade. Moreover, it does not just improve your look, it also change the background and its atmosphere—vintage, black and white, rainbow, sepia, sketch, embossment, and etc. Throwback pictures are also the posts that filled the social networking sites. These are old pictures in way of reminiscing memory of the past. Selfie mania has really caught the attention of every Filipino, regardless of the social status, gender, and age. However, it is a must that whatever we post, we take responsibility on it. Hence, we have to be cautious enough, and think, not just twice, but thrice and over, before we click.

Experiencing Philippines’s International Balloon Festival
Street food is more than just a convenient food source in the Philippines. It is an essential part of our landscape and culture. Coincidentally, Filipinos race to the streets to satisfy their hunger for their favorite street foods for a few pesos. In short, our country is entirely a haven for street foods. Why? Not only it is cheap, but is also found in almost every corner of the street and of course, it’s delectable! Street foods varies in so many options like fishballs, buko juice, balut, and fresh mangoes. At Bataan Peninsula

man in a blue shirt riding on a hot air balloon, with a sword on his right hand and a golden eagle in his left, fled to outer space to save the earth from alien invaders with despicable spaceship. That’s how child would think when they see the stunning balloons that painted the azure sky. One, two, three, four, five until his fingers cannot tell the numbers of floating balloons up in the sky. Awe-strucked—that, the toddler will be. Enormous balloons and kites with variety of hues from different countries representatives as well as the large number of people present, brightened and populated the 250 hectares property of Pradera Verde Lifestyle and Leisure Park of Prado Siongco, Lubao, Pampanga as the Philippine International Balloon festival 2014 unfolded, April 10-13. Evidently, Philippines is one of the countries that has over thousands of festivals and celebrations that colors every corner of the land, all year round. In fact, the number of festivals all over the country exceeds the number of its islands. The joyous and abundance life are the main reasons why Filipinos love to celebrate. Colorful and exuberant parades, pageantry, luscious feast of delicacies and competitions are the primary features of these celebrations. Celebration in the honor of patron saints, the flora and fauna, the foundation history, mythologies and epics are the main themes. It only bares the rich and vibrant culture and the positive nature of Filipinos, even despite the calamities that visits it, yearly. Resilient, innately happy—that was certainly, Filipinos. One of these festivities is Pampanga’s hot air balloon festival, usually celebrated in February in Clark, Angeles City. But this year, the hot air balloons took flight in the Brgy Prado. The event was organized by Pilipinas International Balloon Festival, Inc. (PIBF) in cooperation with the arts, culture and tourism office of Pampanga with the theme “It’s more than just hot air”. The festival attracted more than 100,000 visitors. Aside from the hot air balloons, there are street dances, car shows, wakeboarding demonstrations, a cooking competition joined by hotels and culinary schools, live band performances, radiocontrolled aircraft demonstrations, kite flying, balloon night glows and a fireworks display. Though, the venue is more than 30 kilometers away from its original location, more people crowded the area since the festival ground is fairly passable and accessible for both private and public vehicles. It’s just along the Gapan-Olonggapo road going to Dinalupihan. The event also featured products from local concessionaires; coincide with the opening of a golfcourse and a cable park in town-activities. Local authorities hope these new attractions will bring them tourist and business to Lubao and other parts of Pampanga. Furthermore, one of the 37 balloons which highlighted the event was the 3 wise monkeys. It was built in 2010 in Brazil, stands 92 feet tall and weighs 570 pounds. These three creations embody the proverbial principle to “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” The monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no

State University, Dinalupihan Campus, street food vendors are everywhere – from the buko juice and fishballs in front of the campus’s main gate to the fried chicken and tofu, grilled barbeque, and isaw alongside the municipal plaza. Chicken Proben, Chicharon, Barbeque varieties include Betamax (dried chicken blood), Adidas (chicken feet), Helmet (chicken head), and Isaw (chicken intestines). And lastly, these street foods would not be complete without kwek kwek! These are hard boiled eggs with an orange colored batter coating and cooked deep fry. However, even if we are fond of eating these foods, we are constantly reminded to be aware of their effects on our health. Considering the place where they are sold, that is alongside the streets, some people hesitate to buy them. But students are naturally risk takers, and regardless of the street and the vendor, they are going to buy for what their appetites crave for. The risks are always there, many students would not mind them at all. There is a tendency to ignore those concerns and just enjoy the taste of the cooked or uncooked stuff by the entertaining vendors. Hence, before you eat those foods sold in the streets next time, think twice – your health, or your appetite?
evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil.” Whenever we witness festivals, some had wished to be a child forever. People in all ages cannot deny the fact that we still have a childish personality lurking inside us. Sometimes we missed being cradled by our moms and dads like when we were child. It felt nice to be a child, helpless yet innocent. A loud cry will make your parents hurrying on your way, always ready to give you anything, just to attend your whims. Less problem. Less concerns. Less worries. Nonetheless, all people have to grow old and face the bivouac of life; its giant problems, whether it is as giant as the hot air balloons soaring up in the sky.

Original Filipino Music
11
The battle between Justin Bieber, Wondergirls and Imelda Papin Music is art, music is culture, and to a typical Filipino, music is half of your life. Admit it. Music is something everyone carries around every day, everywhere. It is an ideal form of entertainment, almost handy, and at the same time a convenient method of expression that we Filipinos have gladly invited it over into our lifestyle. It is broad, but perhaps if there is one form of music Juan Dela Cruz has loved really well, it would have to be singing. We, Filipinos, love to sing. Singing is claimed to be one of our many natural talent, and it has been condensed down to liven different specs of our culture. Serenades once became the path to a girl’s heart, the “Pabasa” continues to echo on every street during the commemoration of the Holy Week, and Christmas carols tickle our Decembers. And even in our everyday lives, singing has paved its way through stressing deadlines, household chores, and many other routines. The radio blares on PUVs, music channels on television spread like wildfire, and karaoke machines became the most anticipated object in birthday parties. There is also, of course, the bathroom. Original Pinoy Music When Filipinos accommodated music inside their homes, the OPM was given birth and was expected to own the mainstream. It did without fail. Songs with Tagalog lyrics gave us a reason to continue cultivating our love for our Mother Tongue. Jose Mari Chan sent shivers down our spine. Renz Verano told stories about love. Imelda Papin and other divas ruled the women’s sentiments. Apo Hiking Society portrayed the typical Filipino amidst cultural evolution through their rhythm and their words, and when AHS descended from the peak, Eraserheads presented a neat continuation of this reality music. These songs continue to linger up until now, even though Parokya
Ni Edgar and other new singers have already emerged to take over the Pinoy music scene. Westlife, Shakira, and Sexbomb It was not a complete victory for the OPM, however, because while many Filipino artists were creating a career in the field of music, Western pop culture was already raging the seas of the world. OPM competed with the groovy sounds of Elvis of the 60s, the sweet little things of Barbra Streissand, Michael Jackson’s Thriller during the70s, Ricky Martin and his Sexbomb, the quartet of Westlife on the90s, Shakira’s booty shake, Britney Spears, and the Moffats. It was hard to maintain popularity for Pinoy music when these artists have taken over the whole world. Original ‘Pinoy’ music took on the English language, and it was a greater challenge; make better music, or make none at all. Korean Pop While Western music has dominated the world, another chartbuster rose up from Southeast Asia. Korean Pop, or simply K-Pop, has caught the attention of today’s teenagers, especially the women. Music culture has bred yet another competition in the Philippine music charts, as well as for neighboring countries. K-Pop is the trend of korean pop music that started in Seoul and is performed by artists who have undergone special trainings.. Basically, it uses the standard language of South Korea, and even though very few Filipinos understand the meaning of the songs, it still became a hit many people adored. Emirose, a student of Bataan Peninsula State University, even said that she went as far as investing on companies that sponsor K-Pop bands. She said she was crazy over them, and when asked why, she answered “they’re really amazing, vocals, dance routines, and they really accommodate their fans.” The Filipino Singers, here and abroad The singers that we have here are undoubt-
edly good. This was proven when Lea Salonga performed in the Broadway carrying the blood of a Filipino, a role now inherited by another Filipino: Rachelle Anne Go. This was proven when Christian Bautista’s songs reached up to the countries close to the Philippines. This was proven when Charice Pempengco made it big in Hollywood. In contrast to their successes, however, their voices mostly adorned the foreign language. OPM of Today Many says that our Original Pinoy Music has started to fall down. A comment on Youtube reads like this: “Kaya olats na ang mga Pinoy sa music industry eh. The account user has bravely stated that our own music has lost against foreign music, but it was not all. We conducted a survey on the students of Bataan Peninsula State University to find out if OPM really lost its once rich appeal to the listening public. Out of 100 respondents, 66% said that they prefer foreign music than OPM. The reasons vary, but it all boils down to the fact that they find foreign music more fun to listen to. Will OPM be able to regain its place of the Filipino music lovers? We shall see.

hy do they always take your side and not mine? I always get the blame for every wrong thing that happens. Even if it is your fault, the culprit always has to be me. Me, me, me… it’s always just me. It’s always on me. Do they see you as their only child, that they would always turn a blind eye on your mistakes? Can’t they see how it hurts me when they focus on you all the time it’s as if I’m being disregarded all the time? I remember when we were kids; we’d always have the same dresses, shoes, and bags. Mine would be pink and yours would have to be orange. Every Christmas, I recall, we’d receive almost the same things from the houses that we visit, but somehow, there’s still that one difference. If it’s money they give, you get a larger amount. If it’s toys or dresses we receive, you get the one in the bigger wrapping or the one with more clothes inside. We share the same room, and you always make me angry because you always leave everything you touch in a mess. You don’t organize your stuff after you use them. I’d shout at you back then, but you didn’t seem to mind. You would just reach for your bag of chips and continue watching your DVDs. You’d stay inside our house and lie all day and won’t play with the other children even if I ask you to. I used to ask God why He gave me someone like you as my sister. Then we were in grade school, and we went into different schools. I used to envy you because you didn’t have to walk all your way to class; they’d always get a pedicab to get you to school. You never experienced walking under the scorching sun. You never experienced getting leg
cramps and sweating terribly as you reach the classroom. As a matter of fact, you even got to celebrate your birthday there: spaghetti, pancit, cake, ice cream, and all. As for me, I celebrated each of my birthdays at home, with not many choices of food but one dish because Mom always grumbled about how we didn’t have the money to give me a proper party. I’m always the one to clean the whole house, but everyone would still complain that I’m being lazy. Meanwhile, you touch the broom and everybody adores your diligence. But the moment you touch the dirty dishes, everyone would turn against me, scolding me and asking me why I let you do that. At one time, you said you wanted to come with me in the plaza to watch several television actors perform. But I didn’t want to tag you along because you were a slowpoke. And you had too many issues with yourself. You even text while walking. If you trip and hurt your knees, wouldn’t the blame fall unto me again? Anyway, I just didn’t want you to go with me. Looking back, I wonder… were those really the reasons why… or was I just ashamed of you? Then we went to high school. Your school was near from mine and we go to school together with our brother. And because I don’t leave the house until you’re ready to go, I always end up being late in my classes. We have to go to school together, I get it, but do I really have to wait for you even after class? I missed going out with my friends because I have to fetch you the moment the bell rings. Even during noon, I had to go to your room to have lunch with you. Can’t I just get separated from you and have my own life? There was one day that I didn’t get to your
school in time. That was past six then. You waited for me even if you were all alone in front of the gate. The driver who was parked nearby told me that you’ve been waiting there for so long. I paused and felt a pang of pain on my chest. Why didn’t you go home alone? Had I not come, would you still have waited for me? You entered high school. You get up and leave the house too early. Sometimes I feel sorry for you when get home after the long day; you always look so tired. You go to bed even without changing your clothes. Our neighbors and those people who know us say that you are very dedicated with your studies. Honestly, that is what I admire about you. You get exhausted, but every morning you still get up and go to school to study. You don’t socialize. Wherever you go, eyes follow you and judge you. Eyes, which I don’t have even the slightest knowledge of they are thinking. Once when we were walking, a lad started following us, shouting “pipi… pipi… pipi…” When I shouted and scolded him, he only shrugged and said, “hindi naman niya ako naririnig.” You graduated in high school but you didn’t get the chance to continue because the university that accepts someone with your case is far and only offers night classes. Our parents wouldn’t allow you because they were afraid that something might happen to you. I saw the disappointment and sadness in your eyes. You wanted to take a degree but we all knew that you didn’t have a choice. I asked you once what you wanted to be, but you didn’t answer. Then I said, “do you want to be a teacher?” You said you didn’t want to, because you can’t hear nor speak. I was stunned for a moment and then went to my room to be alone. My heart started to ache, and I was just staring at
the floor with blank eyes. One night while we were watching TV, someone with a similar case as yours was featured in the show “Magpakailanman”. I wanted to change the network but you were holding the remote. We were sitting opposite each other, face to face. I didn’t realize that tears were already falling from my eyes, and when you asked me why I just kept on shaking my head and laughed. In that particular moment, I knew that behind your smiles was that sadness you kept on fighting every day. As time passed by, realizations why you have the family’s favor dawned on me. They see you as someone special and incomparable, and I know that you really are special. You are the one who gives me the inspiration to continue fighting. Because of you, I know what I want to achieve and who I want to be. Life has been hard on me, but I know it was harder for you. I may not have been the sister to you, I know that you know how important you are for me. You showed me the road I could never have seen from other people. You showed me a reality nobody else knows. If sometimes I get pissed off by your behaviors, it only means that I care so much for you. Even if before I get to the point of envy because you have everybody’s attention, I realized how selfish I was because in reality, you have more to envy from me. I may have failed before, but I would never fail you ever again, because you are my only sister, and you are the most wonderful person in the world.

f Dinalupihan is a beach, the Pedicabs were the sands. We see them everywhere – they prowl at the agoras, the scholae, at the plaza. Though they endure scorching heat, some days of rain, and a full year of footwork, what they earned is less than the effort they undertake. Our Pedicab drivers need something today. . . Our community needs a lot of vehicles – people around Pampanga,Olongapo, and Bataan makes Dinalupihan their melting pot.So, the creation of Pedicab terminals is necessary to appease the demand of low-cost transportation. All aspiring Pedicab drivers may do is to register his vehicle annually, no tax, no monthly allotment, no big deals. Thus, men from all ages peacefully wait their turn to carry one or two of us. Though we pay less, but surely, they pay less too. Should they pay more thus we pay more too? Ricky Tuazon, a Pedicab Operator said, “Konti talaga ‘yung kinikita namin kaysa sa inaasahan namin. Buti na lang ‘di na namin kailangang bumili ng gas.” Another Pedicab driver, Ricardo Ocampo supposed, “Ayos nga ‘yung mga bagong batas e, natututo ‘yung ibang mga pasaway; tsaka mababit ‘yung mga marshalls.” For, though Pedicab drivers were usually non-degree holders, or do not need a lot of guts to show off skills; what they need to have are the ability and will to continue the day. According to the United Nations Environment Program, Pedicab Driving ranked one of the toughest jobs in the entire world. However humble they may be, some motorists were annoyed at their 20 kph or less where they assume 60 kph or more. Moreover, some of us prefer riding in a pedicab which the tricycle drivers are upset about. Just recently Mayor Garcia, trumpeted an order. It summoned the Pedicabs to remain intact outside Hi-ways to ensure the easy flow of traffic. Politically, the order calls for the abolition of colorumsand it will be followed by mountains of by-laws that only threaten those unresponsive Pedicabs to withdraw their pace. They need to provide plates and tags, a reflector and its corollaries, side mirrors and horns, and a uniform. In other words, Pedicabs
should exist only if these requirements are satisfied. And naturally, it would hit our Pedicab drivers badly since they earn more from special trips; utmost, to cancel their registrations. The law-abiders become the victors, and the deviants will be victims. Our Pedicabs should follow the instructions very well, or otherwise. Though a noble profession, should this Pinoy spectacle vanish slowly with our culture of hardwork? Can we bulldozer all the sands in the beach to give way to rocks and boulders? A beach is different without its sands, so as Dinalupihan without our Pedicabs. However, on the other parts of the country, Pedicabs were given some artistic distinction. The Pinoy fashion-designer Kenneth Cobonpue has translated his arts to give birth to a modern Pedicab he called Eclipse; as well as some festivals were addressed particularly for them like the First Pedicab Festival. In the recent celebration of Fiesta ng San Juan, Mayor Garcia announced that we will have our first Padyak Festival in recognition of the toil they are contributing to our town. In lieu of the said festival, a contest transpired to test the agility and strength of the hardworking men. In view of high hopes for our Pedicabs, the President of the Pedicab Operators believes,“Those orders will redirect our future – well-attending Marshalls, safer driving, ethical treatment, etc. But at least the Pedicab culture still holds an active position in our community. It will live a long time as long as there are tireless feet to propel them.”Their ability to earn and do their job is a testimony to the fact that like our leaders, pedestrians and tricycle drivers, we all have our needs, a family to feed or children to dress at the end of the day. These are the Pedicab drivers whom we addressed with the deepest concern.
“Umaasa sila na ang bawat butil ng kanilang pawis ay mapapansin ng gobyerno at mapapalitan ang kanilang pagod ng mga pondong hindi naliligaw.”
Reform in Dinalupihan “This is my legacy. If there have been no changes in Dinalupihan after a year of my service, I’ll be the one to leave my position.”

vercrowded. Smelly. Disorganized. Scattered garbage. This is the exact picture that you can see once you enter Dinalupihan’s publicmarket. But that was before. Reformation took charge to delete the unfavorable memory of our market, once unpleasant but now, systematized and hazard-free. When a public market is clean and well-organized — we take pride in it. The worth of peso in public and private investment justified by thiscatch words – and by the jobs that presumably go with it – have producedpitifully little in all people of Dinalupihan, Bataan. The renovationof the public market affects the street vendors the most, contrary with the effect it resulted to the tricycle and pedicab drivers. The administration of Mayor Gila Garcia recently implemented the prohibition of street vendors within the vicinity of the publicmarket. One of the street vendors who wished to remain anonymousgave a statement in lieuwith the newly effected ordinance. “Nakaharang daw kami tas sumisikip daw ‘yung daan. Sagabal daw kami sa mga motor at padyak.” Now that they are not allowed to come back in the placewhere they used to sell, the income of the vendors was relatively affected. When we asked the vendors how much differenceit made
to their daily income when the new ordinancewas implemented, their response was surprising. “Aba’y malaki rin, kumbaga, dati may kita kami ng 2000-3000, ngayon 1-1500 na lang.” Furthermore, we asked how they adapted to the reformand what adjustments they made, Manang responded, “Ayun, tipid kami ngpamilya ko. Talagang malaking pag-aadjust yung ginagawanamin.” Despite the municipalordinance which apparently affected their livelihood and sourceof income, the vendors were not protesting. They can only follow andobey as they know that it will only bridge to more expenses on theirpart. Either way, they are the ones who will lose. “Wala naman akong masabi kasi ‘di naman ako nagbabayad ng tax.Saka wala rin kaming matinong pwesto,” Manang added. This is

regulation about the sidewalk vendors only one of the many changes that have
under Mayor Angela “Gila” Garcia’s term in Dinalupihan.
“This is my legacy. If there have been no changes in Dinalupihanafter a year of my service, I’ll be the one to leave my position,” Mayor Gila explained. Moreover, the transportation sector of the municipality noticed a positive upshot with regards to the ordinance. “Mabilis ang byahe sa palengke kung walang mga nakaharang sa daan na vendors, lalo na kapag rush hour.” Evidently, the changes she has been saying had already begun. So far, though some are adversely affected by these reforms like vendorsearning less than usual, its good results are gradually being observed. For many people, a single bowl of rice is just a simple trip to the supermarket. Hardly ever do we think about the production of our food. Only on the odd occasion we realize where our rice, fruits and vegetables come from. Most people don’t know where their food really comes from and how it comes to magically come into view in their grocery store. What goes into that good, spotless, organic carrot sitting in a bag with all his buddies and priced at only 20 pesos? How many scratches did someone receive picking up squash? How many weeds had to be pulled to make enough room for the rice to grow to the biggest and the best they can be? How many times did someone check the tomatoes, potatoes and cabbage to make sure they were picked at just the right time? One of the major agricultural products of Dinalupihan in Bataan was rice plant or palay. According to the Office of the Municipal Agriculture, most of the farmers prefer planting rice which placed the municipality as one of the rice producing borough in Bataan. But many farmers also plant other crops as a means of in-
COFFEE IS A CUP OF LIFE. As you woke up, felt the cold gust of the morning air while the sunlight dominates your crib, the first thing that you would crave for, is normally-- coffee. For Filipinos and foreigners as well, coffee is a basic need. You may be a writer, a musician, an architect, or even a farmer; one way to suit your fatigue is by sipping the calm taste the coffee offers. A small chitchat or full length discussion, coffee does not fall absent. Indeed, coffee had founded its legacy for all times and all places." It is why Dinalupiheños heartwarmingly welcomed the newly established “The Beanbox” that has become quite popular in such a short span of time. This coffee shop is situated in the LouBelle Building just across the municipal ground. If you’ve been there, you must have had a taste of their “fancy coffee”, red velvet cakes, frappe, and chili cheese fries. “The Beanbox” has indeed appealed to the townsfolk’s taste. It serves as a comfy place to chill, relax, while surfing the internet through their wi-fi. But, it’s not just their coffee that invites customers to sit and feel cozy in their shop; beneath their frontline products is their pledge to quality service and dream to thrive in their market venture, braced by their overwhelming support to the Philippine agricultural field. THE BEANBOX AS A BUSINESS The concept for the Beanbox started earlier in 2012 and materialized late last year. For starters, they installed two kitchens, hired eight service crew members, and located the shop strategically in front of
come and therefore boosting agriculture of the province. The Tale of a Peasant Juan morales or “Mang Juan”, 49, lives in Saguing Dinalupihan Bataan and has been alongside with the grains and straws of rice since he was young. Reminiscing his younger days, he would smile while the tale of his long journey is unraveled. “Mula noong 1984, high school pa lang ako nagtratrabaho na ako kasama ang kuya ko, kasabay ng pag-aaral. Hanggang sa huminto na ako ng pag-aaral kasi mahirap. Pero kailangan, tuloy pa rin ang buhay. Noong magmanage ako ng sarili kong palayan, siguro mga 1993 na”. His family owned one and a half hectare of rice field in Saguing which was divided equally to them by his mother before she died. In the long and arduous years of taking care of their rice field, he says that the process may actually look simple enough as he’s been doing it year after year, but in reality, it isn’t an easy task. As for managing a rice field, not only does the task tugs on the farmers’ finances, it also drains his energy until one can just sit down at the end of the day and be ready to drift off to sleep. “May mga araw na halos nasa bukid na
the municipal hall, near a church and two educational institutions; BPSU-Dinalupihan campus and Luacan Annex. The manager, Mr. Lou Erin R. Perez, first tried his luck with a milk tea business, but says that the business did not go as fine. Realizing that there is no coffee shop in Dinalupihan, he decided to try his fortune out again. Mr. Perez is no coffee-drinker himself, but he knew t h a t many are hooked to coffee. “I think it’s a good business. Maraming coffeelovers, and coffee has health benefits din naman,” he pointed out. Originally, the Beanbox wanted to serve only coffee, but he decided to push a little bit more and serve cakes, pastas, and rice meals. With regards to feedback, Mr. Perez says that they have been receiving positive remarks from the customers. “Maayos ang feedback, both sa price range at sa lasa. We make it a point to ensure na ‘yung quality ng food and beverages namin ay mami-meet ang expectation ng aming customers at magbibigay ng justice sa price. The problem is, personally, sa market. Hindi ako pwedeng maging adventurous lalo na sa pagkain. Hindi ko magawa ‘yung gusto ko kasi baka hindi magets ng ibang customer.” In an interview with a regular customer, Paul Andrei Sereño admits that The Beanbox is his favorite place to hang-out after class. “Maganda kasi ‘yung place. Komportable at may wi-fi (laughs). Isa pa, masarap kaya ‘yung kape nila! Kahit hindi ako mahilig sa kape napapabili ako.” Mr. Perez is now
Manong Juan admits this as he fiddles with his hardened fingers. Aside from him, many farmers also experience the same dilemma of putting up with a long wait before they get the benefit from the crops. “Di maiwasang mangutang kaya nababawasan ‘yung kabuuang kita.” Aside from this difficulty, our farmers also share the difficulties they encounter regarding the weather. “Minsan malas. Kapag may tanim at dumating ang bagyo o ang habagat, wala pa man, eh, lugi agad. Mahirap. When asked about how he copes up if ever his crops get caught up in the storm or in floods, he answered unceasingly,
planning on extending his business to a bistro. “Gusto naming maglagay ng 2nd branch, food and drinks lang. Naghahanap kami ng iba pang pwesto basta within Bataan lang muna, though nakakatanggap na din ako ng offers to put up branches in Pampanga.” THE BEANBOX ON HELPING LOCAL FARMERS One of the goals of Beanbox is to support the local coffee farmers here in the Philippines. Mr. Perez claims that the problem with many businessmen is that they tend to promote products from foreign countries. He emphasized that in order to help the local coffee industry, business establishments like coffee shops should first patronize the beans here in the Philippines. “Masarap ang mga kape na locally produced, class A especially those that are well-picked. It can compete internationally, too” he furthered.
“Mangungutang muna ako, wala na akong magagawa dun. Pero sa awa ng diyos, nakakabawi naman. “Kung tungkol naman sa mga pagbaha, hindi ko na pinapatagal yung mga palay. Dati kasi nag-iimbak ako, pero hindi na ngayon dahil madalas na bumaha, eh. Sayang kung masisira lang at mababaha.” But Manong Juan says that if it wasn’t for farming and planting rice and other crops, he wouldn’t have survived. He wouldn’t have raised a family. “Malaki ang naitulong ng bukirin namin, nasusustentuhan yung pang araw-araw naming pamumuhay at napagaaral ko pa yung apat na anak ko”. At this time, Manong Juan is getting ready for the next rice planting season. *** We may have been reckless in wasting the food that we eat until it was gone. Oftentimes, we immediately dismiss the food forgetting the toil of the people who work hard just to place it in our table. On account of these tenacious workers, let us not be ignorant of the importance of the food before it satiates our hunger. For, behind a single grain is a story of hardship, untold.
THE BEANBOX ON PROVIDING JOBS Normally, Mr. Perez hired his crew even without experience. His ultimate aim is to provide job opportunity to those who need it more. To suffice the aspiring crew’s lack of training, the proprietor coaches them personally. Shai, one of the crew members of the Beanbox says, “Dati sa factory ako nagtatrabaho. Mahirap don. But now, dito na ako nagwowork. Masarap sa pakiramdam na pinagkatiwalaan ako dito kahit na wala naman akong experience.” Mr. Perez also said that he gives as much understanding to his crew as he can. “Hindi naman ako pwedeng magtanggal at maghire na lang basta. Tanggal… Hire… Tanggal. Siyempre, pinapangalagaan din ‘yung quality ng tinitimplang kape, yung lasa pati na rin sa mga pasta namin at iba pa. Kapag kasi nagpalit ako nang nagpalit ng crew ko, ang quality naman ng food ang magsu-suffer kasi mag-iiba nang mag-iiba ang timpla.” So far, after seven months of doing business, only one of his crew had left for personal reasons.
MAKING MORE THAN JUST MONEY “Doing business is more than just making profit,” Mr. Perez mused. “We have to help. We have to give back. And what could be more rewarding than the thought that you have helped someone through a crisis just because you trusted them? I trust our local farmers. I trust the people I hired to help me with my business. And as I make my profit in my business, we all grow.”

A Friend’s Antidote By Camille Anne C. Geronia
A real friend to be trusted, Is a real friend to be loved? It doesn’t ask anything in return, But calls for an understanding heart. While walking in this jolly yet challenging road, You’ve painted smiles on my face, Always trying to reach a helping hand, Whenever I feel lost in my journey. Our worth-remembering experiences, Can’t never be replaced forever. For you have been a part of my life, My friend, always accompany me and carry me when I get tired. Every memory we’d spent, Forming new beginnings and endings, Wandering with you is quite a strange feeling, But one thing is for sure, our friendship will last ‘til eternity.
Special Friendship by Glaiza K. Gagui The first time that we met Was the day I’d never regret? Cause from then you’d always make me smile Even if it’s just for a while. For the laughter that we shared, For the sadness that we bared; Those are tokens I will keep Even if the world loses its peace. You were always beside me, Helping me, guiding, So for those little things that you did, “Special” – that’s what you’ll always be to me.

Life is a matter of choice
Desperate
by Peter Dinglas Jr.
By Doreen Grace U. de Leon
When I was a child, I wished I could quickly grow That I may become strong and everything I’d know Then the day finally arrived and that was all I wanted Now, I am just another person whose life’s struggles have haunted.
Pray for blood and pray for flood From everywhere death is all I had.
I could tell a thousand tales about the ways of life. How I don’t even find time to escape from this strife. There are no warnings in life is a moment, It can cut you like a knife… Is there a way out of this, can anyone show me the light. I have tried hard to be a person of integrity Cause all I wanted was a peaceful life of honesty I don’t know why I am hit with this bitter song Life turns its fangs on me one simple wrong.
Emptiness has darkened my eyes It’s only heartaches, pain and deep sighs. Infidel! Imperial! Lust for reds, Black crusades, tell me when this life will end! Army of revolution, gunpoint indoctrination, Fire of sedation and façade apparition. End and end!
It was during the middle of June. A boy is walking in the 14th Avenue. It's a gorgeous evening, and the sky is just changing color from light blue to violet. The man is wearing a school uniform. He looks like he is in love. The people around him all seem to perceive and respond to this feeling. The man stops at a coffee shop…
S
omeone told me that life is full of bolt from the blue. You’ll never know what will happen in a second. You can call me a skeptic, but I usually mock at lines that scream something that leaves us expecting so much. I am a 19 year-old typical college boy. I am the kind of person who hangs out with his friends when the sun goes down and one who, when the story begins, is still single. I’m single, not because I want to be single. I am single by circumstances and not by choice. Just like any other teenager, I’m just a guy who’s been looking here, there, and everywhere for that girl who can make things happen inside me. You know, your heart stops beating just for a second, you feel the spark, your throat goes dry, you get goose bumps, and suddenly, you will hear the magic song. I haven’t experienced those things. Most of my friends, probably, haven’t experienced that too, but they’re all going out with someone. According to them, such things take place only when you’re suffering from a very high temperature. The story of me falling crazy in love with someone didn’t actually go as I had expected. I never even felt that “spark” that they call, ever. But then, I liked a girl. Of course, it wasn’t love. Actually speaking, it wasn’t even ‘like’. To tell the truth, I have no idea what I felt. I usually spend my evenings at a coffee shop near my university. Whether I like it or not, I end up spending my time staring at the vehicles passing. Well, and just like me, there was this cute lovely girl who would come to the same coffee shop. I always see her with a book. It’s been days since I first saw her and since then, she is always by herself. Occasionally, she would light a cigarette and look at her smoke take shape, and then vanish into nothingness. She was fascinating, mesmerizing and nice-looking. But there was one difference between both of us. I came to the coffee shop with a couple of friends. She came alone. I have never ever seen any girl do that always. We used to glimpse across each other from time to time, but there was nothing more. No nudge. No sweat. No loops in my stomach. Nothing. The days turned to weeks, and weeks turned to a couple of months. That’s a long time once you imagine the scene beyond the world of literature. Long, long ago appears so endearing in a story, but an hour in a silent room? That’s murder! In fact, without knowing it, I was involved and attracted to this girl. I actually admired her, and her tranquil, relaxed, cool as a muse persona that she brought all along for company on a daily basis. Could it be infatuation? Or is it love? Without any in-
tention, I started to stare at her. I stared at her from time to time, silently, but in an approach she
knew I was glancing at her. But no deal. She just wasn’t concerned or even bothered. Ouch! My ego was trampled. One evening, I went to the coffee shop after my night class. I was alone. She’s not yet there. Suddenly, it rained hard. It rained cats and dogs, and a few frogs, too. Subsequently, she walked in with an umbrella. The time is approximately eight in the evening, the peak hour for the coffee shop that’s why the place was crowded and crammed. There was only one seat that was empty and that seat was facing my table. I had half a mind to get up and call her over, but before I could make up my mind and blow up my nerve, she walked to a corner table that just got vacant. Hours have passed, it was still raining. In the middle of all that rain and noise, I pondered and invented a name for her, “The Coffee Girl”. The Coffee Girl had walked out a few minutes before I decided to leave. When I got outside the coffee shop, I saw her standing by the walkway, waiting. I walked up to her hurriedly, and before I knew it I had asked her if I could drop her to her place as it was still raining. She didn’t even smile; she just looked at me with a big question mark, turned around and walked away in the rain under her umbrella. I laughed at myself. Yes, it was absolutely awkward and embarrassing. Even the man walking on the street held back a smirk. I hadn’t even heard the Coffee Girl’s voice. Wretched, I say. The next day I saw her at the coffee shop again. She was sitting by herself. Perhaps, I was invisible for her. Her smoke rings were intriguing her. She couldn’t even leave good smoke rings, what was the big deal with gazing at it? This occurred everyday for a month. The next day, I was out at my pal’s birthday party. Luckily, she was there, with a few girl friends. We have a common friend. Maybe it was fate. Are we really destined for each other? I stared at her, she saw me and then she looked away. I walked where she is and wanted to speak to her. She saw me and blazed a big grin. I was surprised. I was frozen. I didn’t expect that coming. And then, before I could think of anything, she grabbed her friend’s hand and walked away to the ladies room. And I didn’t see her again that night. But I couldn’t stop thinking about her for hours after that. Days have passed and I am still thinking of her. She didn’t show up at the coffee shop he next day, and many days after that. I started to wonder if she had changed her hidey-hole because she taught that I was stalking and pestering her. One month later, I walked into the coffee shop and there she was, all bright and vibrant. I had really missed her. I sat down a few tables away from her. I knew I wanted to talk to her. The coffee shop was quite empty. It was a bit too early for the crowd of coffee addicts to make their entrance. Then, I waited until her coffee ar-

rived. When her check was on the table, I walked up to her. My throat was lumpy and tight. Each step I took only made my walk to her feel further away. But I walked on. The coffee shop was empty. No harm. I could always change my hangout if she slaps me. “Hi!” “Hello?” “You can’t run away from me today. You’ve got to pay for your check”, said. “Huh? What?” she shouted before she appreciated what she actually responded. “May I take a seat with you?” “Of course not.” “C’mon, just for a minute, please?” “No.” The girl took out her wallet. I couldn’t help getting enthralled by her voice, but there were more burning things at hand. I had to talk to her. Then, I persuaded her to talk to me for a few minutes. And that’s when everything started breezing from side to side. We started talking, and the minutes long-drawn-out on at a really fast pace. I got to know so much about her, and I also got to know that she had a huge sense of humor. We had a great time chitchatting to each other, and soon, she said she had to go, as it was getting late for her. We exchanged numbers. Then, I asked her if we could meet again tomorrow. She just smiled and walked away. It was heaven. As I stared at her walk away, my eyes were distracted by a book she had forgotten behind. I looked at the book and its title is “Life is Full of Bolt from Blue”. Wow! Maybe that was true. I put the book in my bag. I lay awake at my bed that night and I stared at her number on my cell phone. Suddenly, I got a call from her. She too was pondering over whether or not to call me. We spoke and spoke to each other through the phone until the morning, and I just wanted to see her again that evening. We met again at the coffee shop and it felt so good. She was smiling the whole time and we were actually flirting back and forth. Then, one evening, when we met up and went to the coffee shop, it was too packed for space, so we decided to go for a drive to while away the time. It was a long drive, and someplace along the way. It was the most romantic sigh. The next day, we went to the coffee shop. We sat next to each other for the first time and we held hands. We spoke less, and smiled more. I told her that I liked her. Then, he slapped me in the face, smiled and told me that she liked me, too. And then, the book that she’d forgotten slipped from my bag. “Life is full of bolt from blue.” I couldn’t agree with that more. I smiled. It was during the middle of June. I was walking in the 14th Avenue. It's a gorgeous evening, and the sky is just changing color from light blue to violet. I am wearing a school uniform. I am indeed in love. The people around me all seem to perceive and respond to this feeling. I stop at a coffee shop. There, I found my destiny. My heart stops beating just for a second, I feel the spark, my throat goes dry, I get goose bumps, and suddenly, I hear the magic song.

DISTANT It all started with a girl, who was always being bullied for she had on braces and glasses and was thus marked as the class nerd. It didn’t help that she hardly talked to anyone and could always be seen at the library reading books a storm. Her name was Lily and she was always being oppressed by everyone. But despite everything, Lilly never cried which annoyed her classmates even more. So her classmates’ goal was to see Lilly cry. They tried harder everyday to make Lilly cry. No one ever succeeded, or so they thought. Every day, when everyone went home and the school grounds are finally empty, sobs coming from the playground will be heard. This is where Lilly weeps, crying her heart out so that when her classmates bully her the next day, she can stand not to cry in front of them. So the bullying continued. One day, the teacher announced that they would be having a new classmate. Then excited blubber erupted in the room. Everyone was curious about the new girl. Everyone, except Lilly. “Who cares about the new girl, she’ll just be another of these bullies,” she thought. “Class, meet Faith. Starting from today, she will be your classmate,” their teacher said. So there goes the new girl. Everyone thinks that she is pretty and they wanted to be friends with her. During break time, everyone gathered around Faith. They were trying to get to know her better; to impress her. Some of them went to Lilly and were doing their usual routine of bullying her. Faith noticed it. She stood up, went over to Lilly, and interfered with the bullies. The students stood still. No one ever stood up for Lilly, not one would dare… except for Faith. The bell rung and class began as usual. But after that incident, Faith was always beside Lilly. At first, Lilly was hesitant for she has a hard time trusting anyone. But because of Faith’s persistence, she finally opened her heart. For the first time in her high school life, Lilly had a friend. It wasn’t long before Faith was at Lilly’s house or Lilly was at Faith’s house. Faith’s family was very rich and during the summer, Lilly stayed over at Faith’s house almost every day. Lilly and Faith were inseparable. High school went by so fast, and now they were graduating. They would be going to different colleges for Lilly couldn’t afford to go to the college where Faith was going to. For the first time since

they’ve met, they won’t be together. Both girls were crying. They would miss each other terribly. On the day that Faith was going away, she gave Lilly a present but she told Lilly to open it when she’s already gone. So they said their goodbyes and promised to each other to stay in touch. Lilly sadly walked home. She held in her hands Faith’s present. She was curious on what it could be. Instead of going home, she went to the playground, her playground. That playground was very special for her for it was the witness to all the pain and hurt that she had experienced before Faith arrived. Sitting on her favorite swing, she slowly opened the parcel. Inside was a box. Gingerly, she lifted the lid, revealing the most exquisite doll she had ever seen. The doll had perfectly blonde curled hair, piercing blue eyes, red lips, and even a tint of blush on her cheeks. The doll was wearing an elegant silk purple gown. The gown had ruffles and diamonds in it. The doll was even wearing shoes! It didn’t seem like a doll at all. It seemed as if it was a living, breathing human being. Having the doll made the separation easier for Lilly to take. She treated the doll as if it was Faith. Because of the doll, it felt as if Faith never left. Months passed and the girls stayed in touch whenever they can. Faith realized her passion for acting and started to build her acting career while Lilly started writing for their school paper. Even though they had separate lives to live, the girls missed each other terribly and letters never failed to arrive in the mailboxes. But a year passed by and Faith hardly sent any letters. This saddened Lilly for she held on to Faith’s promise that they would always be the best of friends and that they would never lose contact. But as time passed, the inevitable happened. Lilly and Faith started to lose their communication. Being busy with a lot of stuff, Faith hardly went home. Lilly on the other hand, started to socialize more. She lost her braces and started wearing contact lenses. She had friends. She had a boyfriend. She was happy. On the eve of her graduation, she looked around her room – the room where she spent 20 years of her life. Slowly, she started cleaning it, putting all her things in boxes to keep in the attic. She suddenly felt a pang of sadness when she saw the doll that Faith gave her – the lovely doll that had been with her since Faith left. Tears suddenly fell from her eyes. She realized how much

she missed Faith. But of course, she had already accepted the fact that Faith had moved on. She probably had started a new life and Lily is no longer part of it. She stared at the doll a little longer. Unsure on what to do with it, she placed it on her bedside table and continued her cleaning. When finally her room was clean, she fell into a deep slumber. It was already her graduation day. Lily woke to a great morning. It finally dawned to her that after today, she would finally leave this place that she calls home. She was excited and anxious at the same time. She looked at her doll and wished that Faith was there to witness and join her celebrate her success. She was not the bullied kid anymore. Now, she is the famous writer whom everyone seeks advice from. She is somebody. She dressed up for her graduation rites. At the last minute she brought the doll with her, so that at least it would seem that Faith was with her. The graduation ceremony was a blur. As soon as Lilly strode up on stage, she started her speech. She recalled her past experiences - how you can be successful no matter what hardships you have been through; how you should always be strong and believe in yourself; and if everyone tries to bring you down, remember that there will always be a person to help you get back up. She then
looked at the doll given by Faith but to her shock the doll was missing. She gave her closing speech and hurriedly gotten off the stage. She left the formal procedure just to look for the doll. While looking for the precious doll, she saw a sign saying “Congratulations Lilly! I am so proud of you! I told you, you can do it! I love
you forever.” Then she looked at the person beside the notice who was holding the doll. To her surprise it was Faith. Faith came up to her, embraced her, and said, “I missed you so much. Being busy in our lives is inevitable, so I’m sorry I wasn’t able to keep in touch with you for a long period of time but I’ve never forgotten about you - about or friendship. Not now, not ever. I promised right? I love you and we will always and forever be the best of friends.” Lilly was speechless. She just burst into tears, embraced Faith even tighter, and smiled. After that incident, they stormed off to the ceremony. Lilly had finally graduated. Thereafter, Lilly and Faith went out to celebrate and fill up the moments they weren’t able to be together. Friendship, if it is true, will last forever. You just have to believe.

A True Champion
It has been two years since I become one of the sports writers of this publication. In those years, I’ve observed that whenever Peninsuleno athletes get their call, they give their time, effort, skills and their best to it. Last academic year, I‘ve witnessed all the determination, dedication, sacrifices, hard work and of course the commitment that athletes as well as the coaches gave to be able to bring fame and circlet to our university. The SCUAA-III, which transpired at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, was one of the most important sporting event participated by the athletes of our university. Despite of many problems encountered, we still consider the competition as a successful participation because our athletes have proven to our neighboring universities in Central Luzon their best and courage in clinching the bacon, an epitome of a great champion. Inspired by the SCUAA-III, our athletes are expecting to take intensive and extensive trainings to uplift our rank and to seal their goals. Our athletes fight like a true sportsman docs: with courage, fair play, sportsmanship and camaraderie. Despite the odds, we still delivered trophies and medals in the last SCUAA-III to our beloved institution. On the other hand, we all know that our athletes don’t have enough fund for high class facilities and equipment that other campuses possesses, but they continuously trying to clinch their goals because they have the heart of a true war-
rior --- a true champion. Since I entered the Malasimbo Publication as a sportswriter and covered different sporting events, I’ve witnessed every competition that our players joined. I still feel the excitement, as if it was my first time to watch them play. It is not only the thrill and excitement that a sporting event brings, but rather the shouting crowd and of course the qualities that we admire in most of our athletes; skills, talents, perseverance, pride, courage and most importantly the ability to endure and continue to focus on their career as a sportsman and as a student. With these facts, we must provide them not only in a financial way, but also in giving them moral support to push their limits and strive hard to achieve our goals. The year 2014 will bring us more challenges that will test our athletes and coaches endurance and focus to the goal as we conquer our penultimate quest to uplift our standing in SCUAA-III and to send more athletes in the in the international competitions. To the athletes, coaches and of course to the whole BPSU family, we must double our efforts in supporting them to get their ultimate goal. In the end, you will feel these humble warriors more and more focused on the training and studies. This selected number of super elite athletes will progress into their training regimen and each of us must exert our best in the support of our goal.

Behind the Silhouette of Triumph Above the peak of achievements and rounds of deep musing, a name born by a man who never dreamt of what he is capable of becoming emerges ¬¬– Earl Timothy “Tim” Cone. At the feet of Oregon in the United States marks the birth of a Tim Cone on December 14, 1957. His life’s turning point was made possible by an ice cream that has squeezed the tranquility destined for him as he becomes a basketball coach. Cone in his extraordinary style in planning a game became a proponent of the triangle offense, where his team follows a pattern while on game for a sure bacon home. Obtaining two grand slams in his coaching career behind 18 titles he has grabbed within a silver year, was a proud Tim of Alaska Aces and now the current coach of San Mig Coffee Mixers. HITTING THE 1st GRAND SLAM In the history of his race which has begun since 1989 as the coach of Alaska Air Force, he famed such names on the hard court. On the succeeding year, Cone led the Air Force to the finals of the PBA Third Conference but unfortunately defeated by Purefoods in the best-of-five series.
Following their failure is a sweet victory upon their first championship in 1991, beating the Ginebra San Miguel in the Third Conference headed by Jojo Lastimosa, Eugene Quilban and Bong Alvares. Being soaked into several obstacles, it was still an asset for them to have a tough team of locals Johnny Abarrientos, JojoLastimosa, Bong Hawkins, Jeffrey Cariaso and PochJunio including the import Sean Chambers for the milkers. From 1994-1998 they won eight titles in 14 conferences during the stretch. The climax of the path comes in 1996 season when Alaska finally won the desired PBA Grand slam. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF; 2ND GRAND SLAM It was until the 1st of September 2011 when TIM cone was unconfined by the Alaska as its head coach after his 22 years of service, subsequently denying rumours that he was set to coach B-Meg Llamados, another PBA Team. "Diba may kasabihan nga tayo, 'A sound mind can only dwell in a sound body'", dagdag pa niya.

"The proposal came from my office and as a sports coordinator, isa yan sa mga responsibilidad ko on how will I propose an activity kung saan papatok, at ang Zumba, workout craze yan eh, kumbaga yan yung latest.", pahayag ni Alipio.
