Is there hope in homeless count? Extra beds may mean fewer on streets By Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS

Housing advocates are cautiously optimistic a new regional homeless count may find fewer people with no roof over their heads. More than 700 volunteers will roam streets, fields and shelters March 16 to count the number of homeless across the Lower Mainland in a single 24-hour snapshot. “We’re hopeful that we’ll see a stemming of the tide of homelessness — that we’ll see the numbers levelling off, if not reduced,” said James Pratt, spokesperson for the Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategy. see FEWER USING, US G, page g 4

Coquitlam’s new green committee will have a hot topic next month for its first meeting: whether to ban cosmetic pesticides. On Monday, city council unanimously voted to send Coun. Selina Robinson’s motion to the yet-to-be-struck sustainability and environmental advisory group, saying it wants “expert opinion” on a proposed restriction on pesticides. Coun. Mae Reid, chair of the city’s land use committee, said she didn’t want council to make a decision without consulting the new committee, which is expected to be made up of Coquitlam residents working in the environmental sector. “I don’t want to pass something and then say, ‘By the way, folks, here it is. You might be professional. You might be qualified but we’ve already made up our minds, thanks. Just come up with a whole bunch of reasons to support us.’ That’s not right and it’s not fair,” she said. Robinson’s motion called for council to ban cosmetic

Linda Reimer, chair of the city’s environmental committee, called Robinson’s motion “a great idea” but said she needed more background. Reimer said most people in Coquitlam want to see a ban at the municipal level, which is permitted under the Community Charter. A deflated Robinson shook her head throughout the debate. She brought a motion to council in 2009 to get public feedback on pesticide use and it was defeated. see SPRING CAN BE DANGER, DANGER, page 6

Coquitlam could cash in on sports Councillor wants city to promote itself as a sport tourism destination

Perry track is on track

By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Coquitlam needs to showcase its sports sites better to bring more tourism money to the local economy, a city councillor says. Coun. Doug Macdonell, the city’s recreation committee chair, is pushing for ways to make Coquitlam and Town Centre Park — home to a half-dozen grass and artificial fields — an economic development driver with national and international events. The park hosted World Police and Fire Games events in 2009 and, before that, the U-19 World Lacrosse Championships. Blue Mountain Park was the meeting point for the 2008 Canadian Jr. Little League Championships while the Poirier sports complex has hosted Minto and Mann cup lacrosse action. And next year, from Aug. 21 to 27, the 2012 Canadian Women’s Open Golf Tournament will be at the Vancouver Golf Club, an LPGA tour stop that’s expected to attract 126 million television viewers. Meanwhile, on a smaller scale, Coquitlam is also considering its bid for the 2016 BC Summer Games with an eye to cashing in on the money spent by athletes, coaches, fans and families on hotel rooms, meals and local shopping. “Sports tourism has great spinoffs for our businesses and community,” Macdonell said. “They can stay and shop here.” He pointed to Kelowna, Kamloops and Penticton as examples of municipalities that have worked with sports organizations to host major tournaments (in January, Kelowna was home to the International

A federally sponsored project to upgrade the track at Coquitlam’s Percy Perry Stadium needs two weeks of good weather to wrap up. The track work is 90% complete and has been delayed because of the rain last fall, said Lori MacKay, the city’s parks, recreation and culture general manager. It’s expected the track will be ready by the end of April, if the clouds stay away. On Monday, city council endorsed an extension to get the Economic Action Plan grant deadline moved up to Oct. 31. The extension applies to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program, under which the government has allowed one more construction season to municipalities that received funding.

Doug Macdonell thinks other such events could be a boon to the city. Children’s Winter Games). Asked how Coquitlam would compete against other Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley cities, like Langley, also seeking sports tourists, Macdonell said, “We have so many active sports groups and dedicated volunteers in the city, and I think the city has really fallen down in using these assets. “Sports tourism is something that’s attainable for Coquitlam,” he said. Pasha Sheikh, general manager of the Executive Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre in Coquitlam, said Burnaby is the city’s top competition when it comes to sports tour-

ism, especially with its facilities at Deer Lake Park and 8-Rinks. A new direction is needed for Coquitlam, which he said in the past hasn’t marketed itself well as a destination. Masood Osmani, general manager of the Best Western Chelsea Inn in Coquitlam, said he, too, would like to see more sports tourism in the city “because we have a great, great location, especially for hockey and lacrosse.” Osmani estimates up to a quarter of his out-of-town guests visit Coquitlam for sports events during the peak seasons. Mike Hind, executive director of the Tri-Cities’ Chamber

of Commerce and a for mer Basketball BC executive director, said Coquitlam has a few hurdles to overcome when it comes to drawing in sports tourism, namely locating a hotel in the City Centre, close to Town Centre Park. “That’s the number one criticism that I hear from user groups,” he said. “There needs to be more hotel space [nearby].” While Burnaby is the main rival, Coquitlam has just as many good sites, Hind said, such as Planet Ice, the renovated Poirier sports complex, two indoor public pools and the cluster of artificial fields at Town Centre Park he said are

under-utilized. “The track [at Percy Perry Stadium] is now at international standards and I think we should really be taking the next step and get sports tourism going here,” he said. Across Canada, sports tourism is becoming more organized, with national and provincial agencies created to support the estimated $2-billion sector. According to Langley’s sports tourism strategy, it is estimated 32% of U.S. tourists and 31% of international visitors come to Canada to take part in sports or outdoor activities. jwarren@tricitynews.com

Fewer using mats in winter continued from front page

Three years ago, the count found 2,660 homeless people across Metro Vancouver — 22% more than in 2005 and with big increases in the TriCities, Burnaby, Maple Ridge and Richmond. The largest numbers of homeless were counted in Vancouver (1,372), Sur rey (388), New Westminster (123) and North Vancouver (116). Pratt said fewer clients have used extreme cold weather spaces this winter, suggesting more street homeless are taking advantage of extra shelter beds that opened in Vancouver and other parts of the region since the last count in 2008. They include Va n c o u ve r ’s H E AT (Homeless Emergency Action Team) shelters that opened in advance of the 2010 Olympics, three of which continue to offer 340 year-round spaces after the province extended funding. Vancouver has also added an extra 160 cold/ wet weather beds and Pratt said people from elsewhere in the region may have headed to Vancouver to take advantage of the extra shelter spaces there. Brothers convicted for role in drug apt. ‘Mid-level’ drug operation was in unit owned by pair’s mother By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Two brothers associated with a drug-dealing operation based out of a Coquitlam apartment were convicted of trafficking last week in provincial court. Dusan and Marko Stevovic were found guilty of trafficking heroin, cocaine and marijuana after Judge

$7,000 in cash, a sword, bullets, a banana clip for an assault rifle, a 6 mm pellet gun and drugdealing paraphernalia such as scales and baggies. But while the accused acknowledged the activities that were taking place and consumed drugs in the apartment, they said they were not in control and not involved in the drug dealing. Another accused, Jason Kirupakaran, said he and another man, Jared Glab, were the sole operators of the drug ring and that the

brothers did not participate. The testimony was rejected by Thomas, who said Kirupakaran’s story was inconsistent with independent evidence, including the surveillance conducted

by police. The judge said the witnesses’ claims were merely an attempt to help exonerate the brothers. Police also found personal belongings such as a drivers’ license, two traffic tickets as well as

receipts addressed to the brothers when they searched the property. “Everything about the subject apartment that is revealed in the material facts cried out that it was a base or hub or ‘stash house’ for drug

trafficking,” he wrote in his reasons for judgement. “As periodic presence there, it is inconceivable that Dusan and Marko would not have seen what was there to be seen.” gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Thomas Woods rejected the pair’s claims that they only occasionally visited the property and were not involved in any illegal activity. During the trial, the court heard that the apartment at 511 Rochester St., which was owned by the defendants’ mother, was a mid-level drug dealing operation. Police had been watching the property in November and December 2008. After a search warrant was executed, Coquitlam RCMP found tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs,

PoCo to ponder ban on sales Provincial ban would be best, says Moore By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Port Coquitlam councillors will consider measures limiting the use of cosmetic pesticides on private property when a report comes to the city’s environmental committee later this month. While PoCo Mayor Greg Moore said provincial legislation would be more effective in curbing the use of cosmetic pesticides, inaction in Victoria is forcing the municipality to step up with its own bylaws. “We really feel that [provincial legislation] is the best way to deal with this,” he said. “But we have waited long enough and we are just going to move forward.” A patchwork of municipal bans makes enforcement difficult, especially when products can be easily bought in neighbouring cities, Moore said. Moore rejected the argument made by those who oppose pesticide bans that they infringe on a homeowner’s private property rights. “It is one thing when what you do on your property leaches into creeks and common property,” he said. “I think there is a role for government to play in that.” The Canadian Cancer Society and the David Suzuki Fo u n d at i o n s ay pesticides can contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment and increase the risk of cancer. Scientists with those organizations have said that more than 10% of cancer deaths are related to environmental carcinogens. Port Coquitlam has not used pesticides on city land since 1983 and has encouraged homeowners to use alternative methods, such as ladybugs, to control aphids and weeds. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Spring can be danger to people and pets continued from front page

She also took aim at councillors Reid and Reimer, who “were not the least bit interested in hearing from the community 18 months ago when I first brought this issue to the table.” She added, “I don’t have the confidence to ensure the matter receives the attention it deserves. “When people get cancer — even in a community where there’s a ban on pesticides — it means absolutely squat,” Robinson said. “But we do know that if you do live a community where they do spray pesticides, the increase of cancer goes up considerably. “It’s spring,” she said. “People are going to start spraying their gardens and putting us and their pets and the environment and our children at risk.” During question period, city council took heat from members of the TriCity Green Council and Coquitlam Council Watch, who pressed about the composition of the new committee, whether council’s tactic was to delay the ban and how much research was needed given that the Canadian Cancer Society backed Robinson’s motion. Mayor Richard Stewart defended council, saying it “isn’t abdicating its responsibility. I concur with those councillors who say it’s inappropriate to set [an environmental committee]

Spray practices In general, Coquitlam city hall has an “environmentally sensitive” policy to handle weeds, bugs and diseases on public lands managed by the parks and rec department. But the integrated pest management approach does allow for chemical interventions when needed, Lori MacKay, Coquitlam’s parks general manager, said Tuesday. In the past few years, the rose garden at Dogwood Pavilion has had a touch-up with fungicide and insecticide. As well, some landscaping along traffic medians have used herbicides to kill weeds. In those cases, signs are put up a day in advance of the application and left there for 48 hours, showing the name of the product in use and a contact number, MacKay said.

The snowdrops and crocuses are only now poking their delicate heads above the chilly ground and by the time grass and weeds start to grow, some property owners might be tempted to use pesticides. But not in Port Moody. The city adopted a ban on pesticides in 2003 and has been promoting chemical-free gardening ever since. Environmental technician Rick Saunier said the city is once again hosting a seminar on the benefits of growing naturally and prefers education to slapping people with fines. “Education is our main goal,” Saunier said, noting that the cosmetic pesticide ban wasn’t enforced until the conclusion of a three-year education program in 2006. The city will enforce its bylaw if people don’t comply but only three such tickets have been issued to businesses operating on stratas that continued to use pesticides even though they were informed not to when they renewed their business licences. According to the city’s website, PoMo’s bylaw prohibits the use of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals for cosmetic purposes and was the first such bylaw to be adopted in western Canada. Fines range from $100 to $300 depending on the number of offences. Saunier said the city is focusing on setting an example of pesticide-free gardening to show people that plants

Flexibility wanted on parks cash

®

Reid proposes changes to act By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

B.C. municipalities should be allowed to dip into their parkland acquisition funds to keep the green spaces moder n and tidy, a Coquitlam city councillor says. A n d , o n M o n d ay, city council backed a motion by Coun. Mae Reid, chair of the city’s land use committee, to get the provincial government to give local governments more flexibility on the use of the fees. Under Section 941 of the Local Government Act, cities can only use the 5% cash-in-lieu to acquire land for new parks. Reid said the provision is a stranglehold and cities, including Coquitlam, have budgetary shortfalls for maintenance and upgrades at existing parks. Coun. Neal Nicholson voted against Reid’s proposal, saying, the 5% for

parkland acquisition “is a standard that’s a pretty modest dedication.” Copies of council’s resolution will be sent to the Union of BC Municipalities and the Lower Mainland L o c a l G o ve r n m e n t Association for discussion at their conventions later this year. Other city news: A Coquitlam city councillor wants to put an end to notices of motion. But on Monday, Coun. Lou Sekora had to submit a notice of motion for council to vote on his idea later this month. Sekora said council shouldn’t have to wait two weeks to make a decision about an issue brought to the table by a council member. He said city council should debate and vote on such topics immediately — although budgetary matters could be deferred for a staff report. S e ko r a ’s m o t i o n , which will be discussed at the March 21 meeting,

An ongoing saga

N

orth Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton has a tough job on his hands as he seeks a funding consensus for TransLink projects and the Evergreen Line. The new chair of TransLink’s mayors’ council is in the unenviable position of trying to bring competing visions for transportation — and how to pay for it — together and get Victoria to approve it so work can start on the $1.4-billion project. Right now, nothing much is happening on Evergreen, which is supposed to open its doors in just three years. There has been some dickering with property owners along the line and the environmental assessment certificate was recently approved but that’s about it. The project has been moving at a snail’s pace, so it’s easier to imagine George Jetson and his family living in Skypad Apartments in Orbit City and getting around in flying cars than to visualize the Evergreen Line rising in Port Moody and Coquitlam. The March 31 deadline set by Shirley Bond in December is not far away and Walton has to get the mayors to agree on some combination of vehicle levies (which some businesses prefer), bridge tolls (which drivers dislike but would bring in lots of cash) and carbon taxes (which the government won’t give up without a fight). The mayors could raise property taxes and fares but those options aren’t very palatable while taxing future property values is a good idea but expensive for developers already required to pay fees for new roads and amenities. Obviously, Walton has a lot of work to do to get the mayors and the province to agree on future funding and although he told Black Press in January he is confident a deal can be reached, others have failed before him. Still, he has one ace in the hole — premier designate Christy Clark. She used to be a Port Moody MLA and knows how much rapid transit is needed in the Lower Mainland’s northeast sector. With her fresh perspective, perhaps the Evergreen Line could get back on track before George Jetson shows up with his space car with Elroy by his side.

Time to enrich the poverty debate – with facts BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA couple of readers responded indignantly to this column’s recent reference to the NDP “trumpeting distorted statistics” about child poverty. I was referring to the annual ritual that goes on here at the legislature when an activist coalition named First Call issues its report that damns B.C. for the worst child poverty in Canada. The NDP pounds away for days, crying “shame” and demanding that the BC Liberal government produce a plan to eliminate child poverty, with annual goals. The “distorted statistics” I referred to are in a regular survey by Statistics Canada called the Low Income Cutoff, or LICO. This survey uses an arbitrary line, currently around $44,000 a year for a family of four, beneath which people are deemed to have “low income.” StatsCan points out in every LICO

A

report that it is a relative measure and not a poverty line but the activists ignore that. West Vancouver-Capilano BC Liberal MLA Ralph Sultan, a former bank economist, has taken this issue on. In November, he published a math-heavy discussion paper called “Child Poverty in West Vancouver: Fact or Fiction?” When I spoke to Sultan last week, he said the weakness of LICO is easy to demonstrate. For one thing, StatsCan uses the same income level across Canada, without regard to the huge variations in cost of housing or other factors. The LICO ignores provincial services such as dental care for social assistance clients because it’s not income. Sultan estimates that about 10% of the B.C. budget is now spent on low-income supports, including rent subsidies. Not surprisingly, Sultan found that “low income” correlates mainly with single mothers, immigrants and aboriginal people on reserves. More surprising is that communities with

TRI-CITY NEWS [CCAB AUDITED CIRCULATION 53,469 (MARCH 2009)] 1405 Broadway St., Port Coquitlam, B.C. V3C 6L6 telephone: 604-525-6397 • fax: 604-944-0703

higher levels of Employment Insurance and welfare recipients are not the communities with the most low-income people. Sultan says this suggests these programs are effective. Another surprise is that aboriginal people do just as well as other people once they are off reserve, despite the relatively low educational achievement we hear so much about. Sultan, who taught business at Harvard University for nine years, cites a recent book by Harvard historian Niall Ferguson called Civilization: The West and the Rest. Ferguson identifies six ingredients in what he calls “the secret sauce of Western civilization” and its economic success. They are: competition, modern science, the rule of law and private property rights, modern medicine, the consumer society and the work ethic. Sultan says that list explains the difference between conditions on and off B.C. reserves. Sultan agrees the political pressure to raise the minimum wage is irreversible. But like most economists, he says that will reduce the number of low-end jobs. And he is sarcastic about the NDP’s demands for

government-imposed solutions: “All we need to do is pass a law and everybody will get richer overnight!” Helping single mothers get back to the workforce is his “personal cause at the moment,” and he says the new full-day kindergarten is a big step in the right direction. Subsidized daycare is another option B.C. has available. “I know in Quebec they have a very generous scheme, which apparently the rest of Canada pays for,” Sultan said. Readers who demand evidence that disputes the First Call finding might start with Sultan’s discussion paper. It’s posted on his website at www.ralphsultanmla.ca under “special studies.” It ends with a quote from another noted social activist, a fellow named Jesus Christ: “The poor shall always be with us.” No one has proven him wrong in the past 2,000 years or so. “TASTE THIS” EVENT March 11th - 13th

Rev up your taste buds!

More planning must go into placement of heat pumps The Editor, Re. “Cities deal with concerns over heat pump noise” (The TriCity News, March 2). This is fast becoming an issue that must be dealt with properly in all municipalities. Having installed a heat pump in my home in the late 1980s, I know something about the noise concerns. It would seem Mr. Lim did not do his homework in consideration of this issue. First, to make the comparison that we all have to put up with more noise, such as trains, traffic, etc., is not an apples-to-apples comparison. A heat pump, by its design, is meant to run for long

periods of time transferring low levels of heat from outdoors to inside a house. On colder days, it can run almost non-stop. While not particularly loud, these machines emit a constant drone from the compressor unit and fan. It’s that constant, low-level noise that is annoying. If you happen to have a bedroom next to one, it can be quite disturbing. In addition to all this is the fact a heat pump doubles as air conditioning in the summer, so the coming of warm weather provides no relief to neighbours. In fact, it may be worse, as the neighbour now has his bedroom

window open, so the noise level is even more intense. Placement of a heat pump’s outdoor unit must be properly engineered. In locations where neighbouring houses are close by, they may need to be boxed in with sound-absorbing materials. The manufacturers of these machines also need to make changes and that will happen if the appropriate pressure is applied. In the meantime, before you install a heat pump or air conditioning unit in your house, make sure that outdoor unit is placed in the proper spot to avoid these kinds of situations. Andy Cassidy, Coquitlam

Today, freedom of expression is limited by, as Rex Murphy stated, the “paradoxically named Human Rights Commission.” This is a body under which the complainant gets legal support paid by taxpayers but the person charged has to pay for his legal representation. Canada no stranger to repressive government The Editor, Lest we get to feel too self-righteous about the repressive governments in the Middle East, we need to review the history of our own governments. During the 1919 strike in Winnipeg, the Royal North West Mounted police fired on unarmed strikers, killing two and wounding 30 others. It was another 20 years before collective bargaining was recognized in Canada.

KidSport seeks donations for upcoming equipment sale By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Families with unused hockey pads, running shoes and lacrosse helmets taking up space in their garage are being asked to donate their old sports equipment for a good cause. KidSport Tri-Cities is holding its spring used sporting goods sale this weekend and is hoping a last-minute donation drive will help bolster the inventory of usable gear for young athletes. Chris Wilson, the chair of the organization, said volunteers are hoping to break the $10,000 in sales record set last year. “The sales are becoming really, really popular, he said. “We open at 10 a.m. and there is usually a lot of people lined up already. Money from the sales goes to helping pay for registration and equipment for children who want to participate in sports but whose families may not have the financial means. This weekend is the fourth sale, which makes up a large percentage of KidSports’ local fundraising efforts. Families looking to get rid of some old sports equipment can bring their gear to:

• Port Coquitlam rec complex; • Port Moody rec complex; • Poirier sports and leisure complex; • Cyclone Taylor Sports (562 Clarke Rd., Coquitlam); • and Corner Sports (2276 Elgin Ave., PoCo). Those interested in purchasing equipment will find good deals at this weekend’s sale, Wilson said. Hockey gloves, for example, cost $5, while skates range from about $10 to $15 for the smaller sizes. He added that a child playing hockey can be outfitted from skates to helmet for about $100. “We get some stuff that has never been used before,â€? Wilson said. “To me, it is just win, win, win all around.â€? Lacrosse, baseball and soccer equipment are also available, along with other sports-related equipment such as treadmills, skis, snowboards and exercise gear. T h i s we e ke n d ’s s a l e will take place at the Port Coquitlam rec complex (2150 Wilson Ave.) on Sunday March 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wilson said after 1 p.m., whatever equipment is left will drop in price by 50%. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Ferris guilty of trafficking, weapon charges dismissed By Gary McKenna

who knew what they were doing. Dyer added that it was not surprising the hydro and phone bills addressed to the home did not list Ferris as an occupant given the illegal activity taking place on the premises. “I would have been surprised if such evidence was located at the grow operation, he said. But the judge said the Crown did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the weapons found in the home belonged to Ferris. Unlike the marijuana, the guns were not in plain view, the judge wrote, and there was no evidence presented by the prosecution that would indicate that Ferris was the only person with access to the home. Therefore, he said, the charges of possession of the shotgun and hand gun without a licence, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm and careless storage of the handgun and shotgun were all dismissed. The court case caps a long cross-country legal journey for Ferris.

THE TRI-CITY NEWS

A New Brunswick man arrested at a marijuana grow operation in Coquitlam avoided conviction on several gun charges but was found guilty of trafficking and production of a controlled substance in Port Coquitlam provincial court last month. Daniel Carl Ferris was arrested in April 2009 at a home on Claremont Street that police said contained close to 1,700 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $473,200. Coquitlam RCMP also found a loaded Mossberg shotgun hidden between the mattress and the headboard of a bed and a Smith and Wesson handgun buried nearby under some clothing. Judge Bryce Dyer rejected the defence’s argument that Ferris was simply visiting the home when police conducted their raid. He wrote in his reasons for judgement that it was inconceivable the owners of the grow op, who spent time and resources installing a sophisticated

After he was arrested in 2009, Coquitlam RCMP learned he was wanted in New Brunswick for aggravated assault resulting from a stabbing outside a Moncton night club. The 2007 incident left one man paralyzed after a knife blade severed his spine. Ferris was sent back to his home province to stand trial but was found not guilty. He was re-arrested immediately after his acquittal and sent back to British Columbia to face the drug and weapons charges in the

Fairy tales are retold for adults A GOOD READ Barb Buxton

W

e all remember the fairy tales of our childhood but what we may forget is that fairy tales were originally spoken, not written, and often they were cautionary tales told to adults as well as children. Before the age of television and movies, storytellers were welcome entertainers for all ages. We may also forget that the stories existed long before Walt Disney. His films, often seen as the “authorized” versions, are only part of a vast collection of folk and fairy tales around the world. More recently, some of the most wellknown stories have been expanded by creative writers into wonderfully entertaining novels. Some follow the storyline we know and some branch off into wild and wonderfully creative fantasies. The best known example of this phenomenon is Wicked by Gregory Maguire, which has also been made into a successful movie. This book gives us the biography of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, demanding our sympathy because of her terrible childhood. Maguire has done a number of other novels in this vein. Mirror, Mirror is, of course, the story of Snow White, set in 1502 in Tuscany, with the wicked queen being no other than Lucrezia Borgia. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, set in 17th century Holland, is a chilling but fascinating reworking of the Cinderella story. Another dark, unusual retelling of

Snow White comes from fantasy writer Tanith Lee, who, in her book White as Snow, weaves the story we know with the classic myth of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, creating a powerful story of how mothers and daughters are bound together for good or ill. Robin McKinley writes for the young adult audience but appeals to older readers as well with her wonderful fantasies. Her early book, Beauty, and a later version, Rose Daughter, are both novelized versions of Beauty and the Beast. Her story follows the traditional version but in much more depth so that the reader becomes involved in the lives of these two strong characters who find themselves outcast from normal society. The Door in the Hedge takes us through the door into Faerieland and a retelling of two favourite stories, The Princess and the Frog and The Twelve Dancing Princesses, as well as two original fairy stories. Another young adult writer, Donna Jo Napoli, is a master at retelling the old tales. Spinner is the story of Rumpelstiltskin told in a way that both horrifies and enchants the reader. Zel is the tale of Rapunzel locked in her tower, exploring the psychological depths of all the characters and their powerful emotions. In a more modern setting, we find The Godmother by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. A frustrated Seattle social

worker trying desperately to help her clients makes a wish for a fairy godmother for “the whole damned city.” Her wish is granted in the form of a silver-haired eccentric godmother who sorts out a cast of characters that reads like a modern day Brothers Grimm. Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and others are recognizable in the stories of Rose’s problematic caseload of abusive relationships and addictions. The godmother theme continues in The Fairy Godmother by popular fantasy writer Mercedes Lackey. In this enchanting tale, the Cinderella character breaks with tradition to become the Fairy Godmother herself — and finds it no easy task. Finally, in a thrilling new children’s novel The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, the true Alyss, heir to the throne of Wonderland, is cast into the world of Victorian London. When she trusts Lewis Carroll to tell her story, he gets it all wrong. In the meantime the Royal Bodyguard, Hatter, searches the world to find Alyss and bring her back to her rightful throne. Bring your childhood stories into adulthood and read some of these books from your local library. A Good Read is a column by Tri-City librarians that is published every Wednesday. Barb Buxton is head of adult services with Port Moody Public Library.

On Int’l Women’s Day, let’s look to change society AS I SEE IT Irena Pochop

O

n March 8, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day (IWD). On this day and for the duration of the week, the Tri-City Transitions Society invites you to celebrate the achievements worldwide in the area of women’s rights and to reflect upon the important work that must still be done. The global theme for this year’s IWD, set by the United Nations, is “equal access to education, training and science and technology: pathway to decent work for women.” It is a theme that highlights the crucial connection between the economic health of the nation and the social, political and economic health of its women.

In Canada, the strides in women’s education and women’s rights over the past century have been substantial. Status of Women Canada boasts that women make up the majority of full-time students in most university faculties, that the current government has the highest percentage of women in cabinet in Canadian history and that women’s employment has risen to 74.3% in the last decade alone. The contributions of Canadian women over the course of the past century in both the arts and the sciences are impressive. From Elsie Gregory McGill’s accomplishments in the field of aeronautical engineering to Margaret Newton’s renowned work on grain rust and Ursula Franklin’s humanitarian interventions in the world of science, the last 100 years have shown how enriched Canadian society can be by the meaningful work of our women.

It is gaps such as these that social services infrastructure is called upon to fill. As the 2010 CEDAW Report Card has shown, however, B.C. is still floundering in its attempts to support women’s rights and the services that protect those rights. The province received two failing grades for its cuts to social assistance and legal aid, a D+ for its inadequate support of low-income and social housing, and a C+ for its management of the intractable problem of violence against women and girls. Let this year’s International Women’s Day be an occasion on which we recognize our capacity for change, acknowledge our responsibility to offer support where it is needed and renew our commitment to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives. Irena Pochop is with Tri-City Transitions Society (formerly Tri-City Women’s Resource Society).

About The Learning Experience p

But research has shown that Canadian women have had to overcome overwhelming personal and professional obstacles to make their contributions, and that to this day, they not only hold few positions of power in the sciences but are also still under-represented in fields such as mathematics or engineering. Even more troubling is that while statistics Canada has identified a direct correlation between a woman’s education level and her chance of employment, it has simultaneously discovered that — education or no education — Canadian women were still less likely than Canadian men to find work. When they do find work, Canadian women also typically make only 66% of what men make in similar positions. This is no staggering improvement over women’s percentage of men’s earnings in 1917, which hovered between 50 and 80%.

Used drink boxes get made into toilet paper, lucky for us it isn’t the other way around

The drink box that your child takes to school is a polycoat container made up of three material types: paper, an aluminum lining, and a plastic coating.

Environmental You probably already know that all the containers that come into a Return-It™ Depot are diverted from the landfill fi and recycled. What you might not know is how the materials are recycled and what they become afterwards. Here’s what happens to two types of containers you’re probably very familiar with: drink boxes and gable top cartons. They’re known as “polycoat” containers because they’re made of more than one material. The drink box that your child takes to school is made up of three material types: paper, an aluminum lining, and a plastic coating. The gable top carton in your refrigerator is made of plastic and paper. THE DIS-ASSEMBLY LINE: From the Return-It™ Depot, drink boxes and gable top cartons are shipped to a factory where a hydra-pulper mashes them to a

pulp to separate the paper fibre from any plastic or aluminum linings. 75% of the weight of a typical polycoat container is recoverable paper fibre. The resulting paper pulp is then used to make cardboard boxes of all shapes, sizes and colours, as well as toilet paper. Thousands of tonnes of paper pulp are recovered in this process. For every tonne of paper pulp recycled, approximately 17 trees are saved.

Two Coquitlam artists aim to re-establish their careers with major exhibits this month at Place des Arts By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

J

oy Kirkwood and Rose Eysmond come from different worlds. Kirkwood, a Nova Scotian, is a grandmother, a teacher and an art doll creator while Eysmond, a Russian emigrant, is a mother of a toddler and a preschooler and squeezes in her painting at night, when the children are asleep. But while both have been on separate life paths, the pair share at least one thing in common: They want to make a name for themselves again through their visual artwork. Kirkwood moved in Coquitlam two years ago after 29 years in Calgary, where she was known for her craft and for being an artist-in-residence at elementary schools. Here, she’s had to go back to square one and rebuild her reputation. And, so far, she’s been successful, having had her pieces exhibited seven times since last year, including in a touring display with the North Shore Credit Union, in the Celebration of Light at Port Coquitlam’s Leigh Square Community Arts Village, at the Port Moody Public Library and at in the Positively Petite miniature show at Coquitlam’s Place des Arts, where she has taught acrylic painting to adults and will open a solo exhibit with Eysmond tomorrow (Thursday). This spring, her Place des Arts instruction will expand with Imagination Station classes for preschoolers as well as an East Meets West watercolour painting course. For Kirkwood, educating and art go hand in hand. “I remember being in Grade 2 and figuring out whether I wanted to be in art or teach,” she said. “Luckily, I got to do both.” Her Place des Arts exhibit in the Atrium Gallery, titled Stories to Tell, involves 27 works, 14 of which are small sculptures, woven with recycled and found materials that have stones for faces, and 13 are complementary paintings “to enhance their story, taking the abstract to a 3D to a flat surface.” She sees her bendable art dolls as muses. They are troubadors from around the world with legends or folklore tales attached. Still, they are faceless. “I didn’t want to project a certain emotion or place in time for them,” she said. “People will see what they want to see in them.” Eysmond is just as eager as Kirkwood to get established locally, having moved from St. Petersburg to Coquitlam five years ago. Her Place des Arts exhibit in the Mezzanine Gallery, titled Windows, features 14 oil and acrylic paintings of windows, window treatments, reflections and views from windows — most of them created in the past five months (she also has set a tight timeline for her next display, titled Still Life or Not, at the Port Moody Arts Centre in July). Her keenness to have her work in the spotlight again is understandable, given her background. Eysmond hails from an artist family — her father is a philosopher, her mother a writer — and, from an early age, they saw their daughter’s talent and

Kerry Davidson’s two previous theatrical roles with the Arts Club Theatre Company were fixed in 19th century England and 20th century France. Currently, she’s the main actor in anytime B.C. as the owner of a run-down bar on the northern waterfront, which is one setting she –– like many left-coasters –– can completely envision well before engaging it on stage. “I went to high school in Steveston, so... I won’t say I ever went there, but there was a place or two around then just like it, laughed the affable Davidson, who plays the gritty Gertie in the theatre production, The Sea Horse, running this week until Saturday at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre. Davidson told The Tri-City Newss she gets a real kick out of her latest acting gig, in which she portrays a hard-scrabbled, stubborn and bitter bar owner whose life is altered by Harry (Daryl King), a seaman of limited means but unlimited dreams who engages in a stormy romance with Gertie, combining in concert the two natural forces of attraction and disdain for each other. “She’s fun to play, Davidson said of Gertie in what the theatre group’s promotional staff have dubbed d A Salty Love Story. “She’s tough, ballsy and brassy... a tough nut to crack [who’s] been around the block and back. We all know someone like that. I even recognize a few of those qualities in myself. Replete with both humour and drama, Davidson said d The Sea Horse director, Sarah Rogers, and the cast do everything to make the play as realistic as impossible, right down to the at-times gruff language that’s true to its surroundings. “It’s the way people talk in a bar, Davidson said. “But it really is a love story. Said Rogers in a press release: “This beautiful and moving tale is my favourite kind of love story –– set in a waterfront bar, which carries the identical name of the play itself. “I am so excited to work with... the fiery and funny Kerry Davidson, who possesses that rare combination of great depth and great comedy, and Daryl King, a hot, upcoming actor. The Sea Horse was first presented at the Arts Club’s Seymour Street location in Vancouver in 1975. “It has long been one of my favourite plays, said Bill Millerd, Arts Club’s artistic managing director. in a release. “I know this production will be a fabulous evening of theatre with two superb performers appearing in such a touching love story. To purchase tickets, call 604-927-6555.

Pianist has students in mind when performing By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

When May Ling Kwok designs a recital program for Place des Arts, where the Victoria pianist has played half a dozen times, she has two aims: to please the audience and to educate young musicians at the Coquitlam facility. Kwok makes a weekend of her trip across the pond, holding a master class as well as a solo concert geared for the students she taught earlier that day. “The whole point is to introduce them to different works,” she said of her program. “Before I play, I talk about each piece so they can have an educational and musical experience.” The Hong Kong-born pianist is used to teaching about music: Kwok (B. Mus., UVic; M.M, Indiana) is on the faculty at the University of Victoria and the Victoria Conservatory of Music. And she is just as well known as an adjudicator and a performer, having played with the Montreal Symphony, National

Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, M o s c o w Philharmonic, V l a d ivo s t o k Symphony Orchestra, Slovakia Radio Orchestra and Czech National KWOK Symphony, to name a few. For her Coquitlam show on Saturday, she’ll combine Classical with Romantic, starting with Mozart’s Sonata in D-major followed by Haydn’s Sonata in E-flat major, the last of his piano sonatas that is widely considered his greatest. Kwok will end the first segment of the show with Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor, Opus 31 — a piece that Schumann compared to a Byronic poem. To ease into the second half, Kwok will play the slow Baccarat by Chopin before launching into one of Liszt’s most technically challenging works, The Dante Sonata, an 18-minute piece in-

spired by Danta Alighieri’s most famous epic poem, The Divine Comedy. “It’s a very dramatic piece,” she said. “The music talks about heaven and hell, purgatory, the devil. It’s certainly the longest piece [of the program] and it has an exciting finish.” Liszt, she said, tends to “convey his musical aspirations through a symphonic means on the piano.” Besides teaching and performing, Kwok has a full schedule planned this year with a summer tour in Europe, solo recordings in the fall and, next year, a Beethoven series with The McPherson Trio, a chamber group she founded. The trio will tour B.C. and Alberta, starting off, of course, in her hometown of Victoria. • Tickets at $13.50/$11 for the May Ling Kwok piano recital are available by calling Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.) at 604664-1636. THE TRI-CITY NEWS

After a weekend of upsets in AAA boys’ basketball action, the Fraser Valley Championships wrapped up with three Tri-City high schools qualifying for the provincial championships. Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Ravens came close to taking it all Saturday after besting Port Moody’s Heritage Woods Kodiaks Friday night in a slim, single-basket 71-69 decision. “We were lucky. Heritage Woods controlled the game,” Ravens head coach Rich Chambers said. “We got seven points in the last 28 seconds.” Fox’s Brett Macdonald sunk the final bucket Friday, putting the Ravens over the top and on to the final. But there the PoCo boys were outmatched by Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Hawks, a team they had beaten earlier in the season. “We weren’t playing our best and we just struggled to match their size and physicality,” Chambers said. In the end, the Hawks carried the Fraser Valley final with a 79-57 win over the second-place Ravens.

Terry Fox Ravens take on W.J. Mouat Hawks in the final of the Fraser Valley AAA boys’ basketball tourney on the weekend. Ravens lost 79-57 but secured a spot in the provincials. Heritage Woods dusted itself off after Friday’s nail-biting loss to the Ravens and eked out their own one-basket win against Walnut Grove of Langley, winning third place in the tournament and a spot in next week’s B.C.-wide championships in Langley. Coquitlam’s Gleneagle Talons lost their battle with Pitt Meadows for fifth

place 56-36 but still earned a spot in the provincials. As for the higher-ranked Ravens, “We’ve still got to get better defensively,” Chambers said. “And we’ve got to have more flow in our offence so we can move from one thing to the other quicker.” tcoyne@tricitynews.com

They may not be household names but seven TriCity residents are being hailed as heroes for their outstanding contributions to sports in the city. Sport BC is set to honour Bryan Gee (volleyball), Jim Lacroix (Special Olympics), Teena and Steve Frost (basketball), Garry Hornsberger (archery), Sue Williems, (Skate Canada) and Donald Hutchinson (Action Schools! BC) with the Community Sport Hero Award presented by Encana. All seven winners were nominated by their peers for having given countless hours of their time as coaches, officials, mentors and administrators of sport in Coquitlam. “The Community Sports Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Tim Gayda, president and CEO of Sport BC in a press release Tuesday. The awards ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. next Tuesday at Coquitlam’s Executive Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre on North Road. Sport BC is the federation for amateur sports in B.C., with 64 member provincial sport organizations and 650,000 participants. tcoyne@tricitynews.com

Styba rink takes gold in curling provincials

CRAIG HODGE/THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Hundreds of soccer players, coaches and parents packed Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park on the weekend for Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club’s annual Domenic Mobilio Friendship Tournament. Above, Royal City Black Sox take on Port Moody Red Devils in boys’ U12 action.

Coquitlam’s Michael Styba rink will be advancing to compete in the U-18 Optimist International Curling Championships in Toronto March 31 to April 3 after winning gold in the provincial finals on the weekend. Styba and his team of Justin Medwid, Dylan Heimburger and Zachary Umbach dominated the competition in their pool during the 2011 Tim Hortons BC Juvenile Curling Championships, hosted by the Cowichan Rocks Curling Centre in Lake Cowichan, defeating Kelvin Harper 8-1, Maxim Langlais 11-0 and Alexander Horvath 10-1. Their semi-final game against Kelowna’s Brandon Emslie proved to be a tighter match, with the locals needing an extra-end steal for a 5-4 win. Styba trailed 3-0 after three ends in the gold-medal game against Victoria’s Daniel Wenzek but scored 3 in the 4th end and stole 2 in the 5th to take a 5-3 lead. The teams exchanged deuces in the 6th and 7th ends, but Styba ran Wenzek out of rocks in the 8th and final end. “It was good,” skip Styba said of the

Delmonico played all his Senior A career in Coquitlam and, in 1980, represented the city on the Canada West team which went on to win

the Nations in 80 World Championship. That victorious 1980 team was coached by the Adanacs’ new head coach, Bob Salt, whom Delmonico will now work with. From 1977 to 1980, Delmonico chalked up a

career-spanning 82 goals and 79 assists while accruing a total of 166 penalty minutes. After the 1980 season, Delmonico left Coquitlam to play lacrosse in Australia where he suffered a career-ending knee injury,

tournament. “A tough couple games — close competition.” This is the first year the Styba rink has been together as a whole. Lead Umbach was new to the team, with Styba, Medwid and Heimburger having played together last year. The game was particularly special for lead Umbach, who celebrated his birthday on the day of the gold medal match with cheers and a song by teammates in the curling lounge. Also of note during the Tim Hortons tournament was the fourthplace finish by Coquitlam’s Gabrielle Plonka rink. Plonka, Dezaray Hawes, Caitlin Campbell and Briana Egan entered the semi-finals undefeated in their pool and the semi-final game against Team Rice (Nanaimo) was a close defensive game. In the end, it came down to skips rocks in the 8th end. It was a strategically tough game, but was lost, placing Plonka and her team in the bronze medal game. — with files from the Cowichan Gazette (Black Press)
