Gun found, 4 arrested

Bear breaks in and eats camping grub

By Todd Coyne THE TRI-CITY NEWS

A Port Moody police officer confiscated more than just booze Saturday when he confronted a group of young men openly drinking at White Pine Beach. At approximately 4:30 p.m., an officer patrolling Bedwell Bay Road approached four men and ordered them to dump out their liquor. Three of the men complied but when the fourth did not, the officer noticed the man adjusting an object in his waistband, according to Port Moody Police spokesperson Const. Bill Kim. see ARMOUR FOUND FOUND,, page 12

A bear opened a window and broke through a screen to get inside the Paiement family’s Bigfoot travel trailer.

A Port Moody family is living in fear after a bear broke into a trailer, stuffed itself with cereal, chips and marshmallows, then returned the following night looking for more. Lilian Paiement, who lives on Darney Bay at the top of April Road in PoMo, said her husband was also briefly trapped in the family car when the bear returned Monday night and she

hopes conservation officers will investigate. Bears have been spotted in the neighbourhood trying to get into the animal-resistant garbage bins in recent days but this was the closest encounter with a bear the family has experienced in 20 years of living in the area. On Sunday morning, Paiements discovered their travel trailer had been broken into and ransacked by a bear, which managed to open a two-foot square window, break through the bug screen and climb in to open drawers where dry goods had been stored for an upcoming camping trip to Osoyoos. see BEAR DINED,, page 11

Karo Stein, Onni site superintendent (left) and Mike Mackay, development manager, check out the new green roof and bioswales for storm water management, and insulation, as part of the new Walmart Supercentre that opened last month in Port Coquitlam’s Dominion Triangle. DIANE STRANDBERG THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Attention Walmart shoppers: Something green is going on Articles by Diane Strandberg THE TRI-CITY NEWS

I

t was a study in contrasts: While crowds of shoppers cruised the aisles with heavily laden grocery carts on grand-opening day July 15, the roof of Port Coquitlam’s new Walmart Supercentre was quiet and serene. To the east, the view of the coastal mountains was spectacular and the lush foliage on the banks of the Pitt River created a wall of green. But it was the 220,000 hand-planted sedums and succulents that were taking root on Walmart’s roof that drew the visitor’s attention. The tiny, colourful, drought-tolerant plants that more-rightly belong in rock crevices or an alpine meadow stretched out as far as the eye could see on 113,467 sq. ft. of the roof ’s 151,290 sq. ft. surface. Bigger than two NFL-sized football fields, the roof is one of the largest in the region and the green roof a first for the publicly owned multinational corporation, yet few will get to see this garden of miniature plants. For one thing, you have to climb a 30-foot ladder to get there, and it’s not part of the amenities, such as groceries, dry goods and a garden centre that are drawing shoppers from Pitt Meadows to Port Moody to 2150 Hawkins St. to view the newest big-box discount store. In fact, the green roof is not designed for public access but is a prime example of PoCo’s 2006 bylaw amendment that requires all buildings over 5,000 sq. m (53,821 sq. ft.)

IN QUOTES

“It is a significant cost to the project. That said, we did experience the benefit from a more efficient building and in the approval process.” Mike Mackay, Onni development mgr. to use green technology to reduce the heat island effect of large buildings, boost energy conservation and promote natural dispersion of storm water run-off. When the bylaw change was introduced, many in the development industry, including the Urban Development Institute, expressed concerns about a projected tripling of roofing costs, maintenance and liability. The UDI called for a voluntary approach, more flexibility and incentives, and the city moved in some small ways to meet those demands. It didn’t go as far as the city of Toronto, which offers financial assistance for green roof technology, but PoCo does allow variances for certain business cases (such as large, unheated industrial storage) and will consider other improvements instead if they get the same environmental outcomes or better.

BY THE NUMBERS

Port Coquitlam big box stores Costco: 135,000 sq. ft. Home Depot: 102,000 sq. ft. Walmart: 151,290 sq. ft. (Walmart green roof: 113,467 sq. ft.)

City rules require use of green roof technology City was initially criticized for its stance but builders are coming around T h e Po r t C o q u i t l a m Wa l m a r t Supercentre’s green roof might not have been built without the city’s insistence, says the mayor. PoCo took some flack for being the first city in the country to make green roofs a requirement in buildings over 50,000 sq. m but the once-innovative technology is now common in the area, Greg Moore says. Walmart just unveiled its 113,000 sq. ft. green roof, the size of two NFL football fields, but the new Canadian Tire under construction in the Fremont Village will have a green roof too, and two other buildings also have green roofs, the mayor says, adding, “We’re seeing them because of the policy of Port Coquitlam.”

While Moore wasn’t a proponent of big box stores in the city when he was a councillor, he says Walmart has made great strides in meeting environmental standards since moving here. “What they’re doing there is showing some real leadership in building design and landscaping design, and a lot of developments can look at the building as something they can aspire to,” he said. In addition to the green roof, landscaped bioswales and the use of LED lighting in signs, PoCo’s new Walmart Supercentre also has bike racks and plugin parking for electric vehicles, and its refrigeration system meets the highest energy efficiency standards, Moore said, noting that the company will ultimately save money with these initiatives. He likes the initiatives too, he said, because he was able to ride his bike and park it for last week’s grand-opening event. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

Managing rain water is one key continued from page 3

As for costs, the city maintains they should be no more than 10% higher than those for traditional roofs, with the investment paying itself off in two years in reduced heating and cooling costs. The Walmart roof cost $1 million and includes a landscaped bioswale where water from the roof is channelled into a pipe, then drops 35 feet before bouncing off a couple of boulders to disperse into an attractively-laid out rock and gravel bed below. There, it slowly percolates into the groundwater. Onni development manager Mike Mackay said the investment was significant but will be offset by reduced heating and cooling costs, and the fast-tracking of the project, in which the city shortened the application process by one to two months and shaved off some of the project’s capital carrying costs. “It is a significant cost to the project,” Mackay said. “That said, we did experience the benefit from a more efficient building and in the approval process.” Mackay also pointed to other design elements built into the project that reduce its impact on the environment, such as landscaped bioswales

— which naturally filter rain water and reduce stress on the city’s storm sewer system —throughout the parking lot as well as outdoor LED lighting. With Walmart completed, Onni now awaits construction of Canadian Tire, the next anchor store for the Fremont Village shopping centre, slated for a build-out of 760,000 sq. ft. over the next several years, including two 30-storey towers and a pedestrian-oriented fashion retail centre to the south. To the west, plans are unfolding for banks and restaurants, with development permit approval expected soon for CIBC, the Royal Bank, Shoppers Drug Mart, A&W and Burger King. Mackay said the goal is to create pedestrian links between the stores and to encourage people to walk once they get to the mall because all of their shopping needs will be in one place. Some may even consider moving to the area because of access to all the amenities and he predicted a reduction in automobile traffic and emissions will result. “We want to establish a viable commercial environment and really establish a community around that,” Mackay said, noting that PoCo is an ideal destination for an outdoor pedestrianoriented shopping des-

tination because people love to walk, as evidenced by the popularity of the Traboulay PoCo Trail a short distance away. In fact, the city is putting the finishing touches on a $9.9-million project to increase diversity in

the Pitt River with channels, ponds, marshlands, islands, roosting posts for birds and basking rocks for snakes paid for in part by developers for habitat compensation. Still, cars were very much in evidence on

City has plans to help Scott Crk. watershed By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

The city of Coquitlam’s first plan to prevent its most populated watershed from deteriorating is underway — nearly six years after it started. The draft Scott Creek Integrated Watershed Management Plan, which was introduced to the city’s engineering committee last week, shows a number of “fixes” to the watershed that’s rated as one of the sickest by Metro Vancouver standards. To better its health, the city plans to take on a $6.5-million project to upgrade the watershed’s stormwater management and environmental measures to contain urban run-off pollution, to control erosions and sedimentation and to help stream base flows. Without the work, “further degradation from new development can be expected,” Bill Susak, Coquitlam’s general manager of engineering and public works, warned in his recent report to council. Niall Williams, Scott Creek/Hoy Creek hatchery manager, told The TriCity Newss this week the watershed has been poor for years in the lower sections — a comment also raised by land use committee chair Coun. Mae Reid at last week’s engineering meeting. More water needs to get back into the creeks, they said. “At present, a large proportion of the water is diverted into the Coquitlam River via two large stormwater culverts, one of which enters Lafarge Lake,” Williams said. “This water is needed in Hoy and Scott creeks to dilute the pollution effects caused by

the high-density developments in the Town Centre area.” As well, he said, Coho salmon find it hard to swim the creeks with so many barriers in their way. Besides weeding out invasive plants, Williams said his volunteer group has put in large sand filters, UV sterilizers and activated carbon filters to remove pollution. As a result, fish mortalities “have decreased enormously” over the past few years. Dana Soong, Coquitlam’s manager of utility operations, said work on the watershed plan was put on hold in 2008 while the city developed its onsite rainwater management strategy, aimed at protecting homes from flooding while preserving the area’s natural hydrology (that strategy is also in the recently adopted Partington Creek Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the new Burke Mountain neighbourhood). Soong said a number of stakeholders such as Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Urban Development Institute have already reviewed the draft plan. The Scott Creek watershed — a residential area that saw development start more than 25 years ago — is about 1,950 hectares and spans from Port Moody to Pinetree Way, and Como Lake Avenue to the top of Westwood Plateau. Copies of the draft Scott Creek Integrated Management Plan will be available for public viewing starting next week at Coquitlam Public Library branches. A public open house on the draft watershed plan is set to be held this fall before council considers it. jwarren@tricitynews.com

What are your $ priorities? By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

A new swimming pool, improved sports fields and money in the bank are some of the items Port Coquitlam residents are calling for when city council begins budget deliberations this fall. So far, the city has received just six submissions following its first public input opportunity and more consultation is expected as the process moves forward. The feedback is necessary, staff said, in order for the city and council to prepare a financial plan that reflects what the community wants. Members of the PoCo Marlins Swim Club addressed the committee, saying a new indoor pool is needed. Marlins president Rob Ancell said the pool at Hyde Creek rec centre is at capacity and an improved facility would allow the community to host provincial championship events. PoCo FC Soccer Association told the city poor field surfaces are forcing the organization to replace all of its soccer balls every season. Facilities co-ordinator Tracy Nolet commented that the turf and gravel fields are at capacity and many players are joining clubs in neigh-

For the

LOVE of

bouring municipalities. A lighted surface, Nolet said, would help alleviate some of the capacity that the organization is currently experiencing. Bruce Cox, a PoCo resident, said the city needs to set money aside for the maintenance and upgrade of infrastructure in the municipality. Last month’s public input opportunity was the first of what the city expects to be a series of discussions on the 2012-

’16 financial plan. I n S e p t e m b e r, a n online survey will be available on the city’s website and the finance and intergovernmental committee (FIG) will review utility rates in November. In January 2012, the draft plan will be brought to FIG in advance of a budget open house in February at the PoCo rec complex. Formal public consultation will take place

during regular council meetings in March and the plan is expected to be approved in April. In a city report, staff said it expects to maintain 2011 service levels and will look for budget reductions where reasonable. Staff is also looking at creating a 10year capital plan for priority projects and will contribute to a growth reserve for future capital projects. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Thousands raised to help families deal with loss By Todd Coyne THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Tri-City residents opened their hearts and their garages Saturday, raising thousands of dollars for charity, a nickel and a dime at a time. The Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity Society was founded in memory of the 30-year-old mother of four who was run down and killed along with Lorraine Cruz in an alleged hit-and-run in February. Saturday’s bottle drive was the new society’s first-ever fundraiser. Kim Debenedictis organized the drive at two locations, collecting refundable bottles, cans and containers at the Port Coquitlam Canadian Tire and the H&M bottle depot in New Westminster. “ I t w a s re a l ly a m a z i n g , ” Debenedictis said. “We were running trucks full of bottles back and

forth non-stop from PoCo to the New West depot.” While a final tally for the event isn’t expected until Thursday, Debenedictis estimated the oneday bottle drive raised between REAVELEY $6,000 and $8,000. And it wasn’t just friends and neighbours who kicked in for charity. Debenedictis said as many as seven Lower Mainland Boston Pizza locations donated their returnables Saturday, as did the Cactus Club Cafe in Coquitlam. “The Canadian Tire location was just slammed all day,” she said, adding that by-donation barbecue, facepainting and a draw to win a television helped boost the day’s fun and fundraising efforts.

Wait and see for PoMo councillors By Todd Coyne THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Port Moody city council may be on its summer break but with fall elections looming, talk is starting to swirl at city hall about who’s doing what come November. Mayor Joe Trasolini announced last month he wouldn’t seek a fifth term in office while Port Moody’s top staffer, Gaetan Royer, resigned from his post as city manager, signalling that the winds of change are blowing strong in the lead-up to the Nov. 19 civic election. While no sitting councillor has officially tossed his or her hat into the ring for the mayor’s job yet, only one councillor has gone on the record to say she will not seek the mayor’s chair and one other has said she will not run for council again but is considering a shot at mayor. Coun. Diana Dilworth told The Tri-City Newss she’s excited to run for a fourth term as city councillor in November but her answer to whether she’s considering a mayoral run is “a categorical no.” Every other Port Moody councillor — with the exception of Coun. Mike Clay, who did not return calls or emails to The Tri-City Newss — is leaving the option for a mayoral run open. Coun. Meghan Lahti told The News

via email on July 20 that she would not seek a spot on city council again but said, “At this time, I am undecided but if I choose to run it will be for mayor.” Coun. Gerry Nuttall said in an JOE TRASOLINI interview that he would run again for council only if there was at least one mayoral candidate running with a clear vision for the city who was willing to work with council as a team. “If that candidate does not emerge, then I will look at my options,” Nuttall said, leaving the door open for a possible mayoral run. Councillors Bob Elliott and Karen Rockwell both said they were undecided about whether they would run for either mayor or council and wanted to “keep all options open” in the meantime. Some councillors who spoke privately said they believed Coun. Clay could make a strong candidate for mayor and wanted to hear what his plans were before making any announcements. Council returns from its summer break with a meeting Tuesday, Sept. 13. tcoyne@tricitynews.com

ongratulations to homeless advocates who are thinking outside of the box. While the rest of us go about our daily business, many in the volunteer and non-profit sectors are looking for ways to provide homeless people with services that many of us take for granted, such as banking, dental work and health care. While it would be easier to provide some of these services if the transition housing and shelter planned for Coquitlam city land at 3030 Gordon Ave. were built, that project is unfunded and still a long way from opening its doors. In the meantime, efforts are being made to provide these services in other ways to the Tri-Cities’ transient population. The Hope for Freedom Society, for example, with support from the Laurel Foundation, is providing the services of an outreach psychiatric nurse to assess homeless clients’ mental health needs. Hope for Freedom has also identified local health clinics that will now accept patients who are homeless, and the organization, which provides outreach and support to homeless people, is also working on organizing a dental care program. It has received donations of equipment and supplies, and engaged the help of four dentists. Meanwhile, Coquitlam council has once again given the nod to the temporary cold/wet weather mat program so local churches can continue to offer a warm place to stay in winter while Vancity credit union is in talks with The Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Group to see if a way can be found to provide banking services for individuals with no identity documents. Other more controversial services are also being provided, such as a needle exchange to help prevent the spread of blood-born diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C among intravenous drug users. Philosophically, it’s difficult to applaud a program that gives tacit support to harmful drug use but, practically, it makes sense to provide health services to people who are already struggling with addiction. In the end, the true worth of a community is not its accumulated wealth but the ways in which individuals reach out to others to provide dignity and hope for all — even those with no fixed address.

Green Party gets lost in static over smart meters BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA he election of Elizabeth May as Canada’s firstever Green Party MP was supposed to be a breakthrough for environmental issues. Finally embraced by voters in the organic farming region of SaanichGulf Islands, May was given a mandate to change the political conversation about sustainable development, climate change and pollution. The breakthrough might even translate to the provincial level, where Jane Sterk is the latest of a line of BC Green leaders to toil in obscurity. It’s too bad they both threw away their scientific credibility last week by chiming in with the tinfoil-hat movement and its trumped-up opposition to BC Hydro’s transition to wireless meters. May got the tinfoil ball rolling by decrying the use of wireless internet. It might be con-

T

tributing to bee colony collapse, she mused on Twitter, to much ridicule. Apparently, she believes that using a computer connected by a wire keeps her free from the radio waves that surround us all. They are generated not only by computers, cell phones and smart meters but all sources of light, including the infrared light that accompanies body heat. May then cited the much-hyped revelation that the World Health Organization has listed radio-frequency waves as a possible carcinogen. Radio waves such as those generated by cell phones and wireless routers were moved to a classification called 2B, which also includes such volatile substances as pickled vegetables. What this actually means is that health effects can’t be ruled out. It’s impossible to prove that something’s impossible. But after many years of study, the evidence that cell phones and such devices cause illness remains at precisely zero. With May alongside, Sterk called a news conference last week to demand a halt to BC Hydro’s smart meter program. The first

TRI-CITY NEWS [CCAB AUDITED CIRCULATION 53,469 (MARCH 2009)] 1405 Broadway St., Port Coquitlam, B.C. V3C 6L6 telephone: 604-525-6397 • fax: 604-944-0703

question from a reporter was, why are you reversing the BC Greens’ 2009 election platform, which called for installation of smart meters by 2012, followed by imposition of time-of-use electricity pricing to reduce consumption? Sterk expressed surprise, apparently having forgotten her own position from only two years ago. Political credibility takes years to build but only seconds to destroy. I attended the BC Green Party’s 2007 leadership convention at which Sterk was elected. It came after a long and divisive debate over whether cell phones could be used at the meeting. They were finally allowed but this “issue” apparently took up more time than any policy discussion. Why is BC Hydro putting in smart meters? First, mechanical meters are obsolete and soon won’t be available. Second, B.C. is about twice as big as Germany. Finding, let alone fixing, damaged power lines is a monumental task. A smart grid (much more than just digital meters) is not only self-assessing, it can be made self-healing, re-routing power

to blacked-out areas when weather, transformer failure or vehicle accidents cut power. Do smart meters continuously communicate with a “mother ship,” as some claim? Do they record when you get up at night to pee? No and no. These are the kinds of nonsense claims that surround the smart meter issue. BC Hydro says four to six transmissions from a smart meter to a local hub each day amount to about a minute in total. Radio wave exposure is equivalent to a half-hour cell phone call every 20 years. The British National Cancer Institute just published an extensive study of children with brain tumours and exposure to cell phones. Like previous studies, it found no correlation. Somebody should send a postcard to the Green Party and tell them about it. Danielle Pollock said in a release Tuesday. The fair will run rain or shine inside rec complex and in the parking lot at 633 Poirier St., Coquitlam. Bear dined on cereal, chips & marshmallows

Annual

Custom Car and family day Show

continued from front page

Paiement said the bear must have been in the trailer for a long time because it ate boxes of cereal, several bags of chips and three bags of marshmallows, as well as drinking from juice boxes and munching down Kraft dinner, beef jerky and a can of Pringles potato chips. It also yanked out a utensil drawer so hard it broke one of the sliding rails. “He got through everything,” she said. The bear returned Monday night, Paiement said, opened the car door and dragged out an empty cooler. At about 11 p.m., her husband, Serge, went outside to check on a locked garbage bin that was knocked over when he noticed the car door had been left open and a cooler left on the ground — likely by the same bear. When he went back to pick up a camera that had been left on the seat, he saw the bear near the house so he got into the car and tried to scare it away by honking the horn. Lilian added to the racket by banging on the front door but the bear didn’t look conc e r n e d a n d s l ow ly walked off the property to the neighbour’s garage. Paiement is concerned the bear is now habituated to humans and human food, and

Trapped on Burke A bear causing problems at the foot of Burke Mountain has been trapped and removed from the area but a local official is concerned more nuisance bears will hang around if people keep feeding them. “Feeding bears always results in them being habituated. It changes their behaviour. [The bear that was trapped] didn’t think he was doing anything wrong,” said Drake Stephens, Coquitlam’s Bear Aware co-ordinator, who said he had reports of people feeding the bear when it was a cub last year. A trap was set on Abby Lane off of Oxford Street north of David Avenue after reports that an 18-month-old bear was entering garages, eating garbage and causing other problems. It was picked up by conservation officers Friday but The Tri-City Newss was unable to confirm by press time Tuesday whether it had been relocated or destroyed. Stephens said complaints about bears have been on the rise for the last several weeks as the bruins start loading up on high-calorie foods. But the problem bear on Abby Lane was probably responsible for most of the calls, he said. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

could pose a danger to the neighbourhood. “We were scared last night,” she said. “We saw him and he’s huge.” Although this is the first time a bear has tried to get into the trailer in the 14 years they’ve owned it, Paiement said she has learned her lesson and won’t leave any food inside any more. She even moved the barbecue indoors. • This is the time of year when bears are looking for high-calorie

Armour found after PM domestic report continued from front page

The officer called for additional officers to help conduct a search of the man. That search found a loaded .40 calibre semi-automatic handgun on the suspect. It was then that the officers also discovered the licence plate on the vehicle the four men had been driving in matched one reported stolen. All four men were arrested and the gun and vehicle were seized for forensic analysis, Const. Kim said. Other news:

sequently found a short time later in Eagle Ridge Hospital, where she was receiving treatment for an unrelated ailment. During their investigation at the home, officers determined that no physical assault had taken place between the couple. But when the man’s mother arrived, the mother and son began to verbally abuse police. They were both arrested for causing a disturbance and for obstruction, Kim said. Police searched the residence and found

ARMOUR FOUND

Police arrested two Por t Moody people Sunday when they responded to a report of a domestic dispute and found illegal body armour and marijuana. PoMo cops responded to the disturbance in the 100-block of Brew Street at approximately 10:20 a.m. Sunday, according to Kim. On arrival, the officers met with a man they said is well known to police. Police asked to speak with the man’s girlfriend but he told them she had just left. The woman was sub-

three sets of body armour and a bag of marijuana. Police determined the man had no permits allowing him to have the armour. The man was arrested for unlawful possession of body armour, possession of a controlled substance, causing a disturbance and obstruction while his mother was arrested for causing a disturbance and obstruction. Both were released on a promise to appear in Port Coquitlam court Sept. 8. tcoyne@tricitynews.com

Korean fun at Blue Mt. Festival marks its 10th anniversary Saturday with music, food & more Singing, dancing and cultural performances are on the program for Saturday’s 10th annual Korean Heritage Day Festival at Blue Mountain Park in Coquitlam. And for this milestone anniversary, organizers will showcase three top young classical musicians who qualified earlier this year in the first-ever KCHS 2011 International Musical Festival, sponsored by the Korean Cultural Heritage Society and Tom Lee Music. Music festival committee member Hyeajung Park, conductor of the Korean Youth Symphony Orchestra, said in a press release that the aim of the contest is “to provide a musical forum for the students and teachers to demonstrate their musical achievements... while fostering professional growth and networking opportunities for the participants.” The one-day outdoor festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the corner of Porter Street and King Albert Avenue and draws thousands of visitors from around Metro Vancouver. The Aug. 6 party includes Korean food, a claymaking contest for kids, games and a special show from a group from Korea. As well, organizers will celebrate the Asian country’s recent acceptance as host of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Admission is free and a shuttle will be available to the festival site from the Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain station. jwarren@tricitynews.com

Where Art Meets Nature is the theme for the third annual Art in the Park at Coquitlam’s Minnekhada regional park this weekend. About 30 artists will show and sell their wares during the festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Photographer Manfred Kraus, a director of the Minnekhada Park Association, said children’s artwork from a recent Creative Cafe, held at the park, will be on display showing the diverse flora and fauna at the Metro Vancouver-run green jewel. As well, the free family event will feature Mojiganga, a giant puppet bear created by artist Ana Martin Del Campo, and a walking performer dressed as a blue tree — a nod to Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos’ Blue Trees outside of Port Moody city hall in March. In addition to art displays, demonstrations and a barbecue lunch, visitors can learn more about

t’s not easy to teach six days a week and audition for musical theatre shows at the same time. So, last year, Gleneagle secondary graduate Kim Bunka took her career by the horns and founded a theatre company, based in Port Moody, to tailor around her busy schedule. And tomorrow night (Thursday), Undiscovered Theatre will launch its first show at the Inlet Theatre, called John and Jen, a musical production that Bunka calls “a different kind of musical genre because of its subject matter: It’s very truthful, it’s very real.” Many musicals tend to have fluffy, feel-good plots, she said; John and Jen, however, is the story of a brother and sister and, later, a mother and son, in the United States between 1950 and 1990, and touches on heavy topics like the Vietnam War, single parenting and domestic abuse. It will be the third time the musical has been shown in Metro Vancouver, said Bunka, who met with the playwright and composer Andrew Lippa in 2004 (John and Jen was also written by Tom Greenwald). For the Tri-City production, Bunka said it was important for her to hone local and “undiscovered” talent. She cast herself in the lead role of Jen while Joel Ballard, a Riverside secondary graduate, will portray John. Fellow Gleanagle grads Mark

Turpin — also a Lindbjerg Academy teacher with Bunka — was tapped to direct and Andrew Persoon is in the three-piece band, on percussion. Riverside grads Christina Andreola is the stage manager while Clare Wyatt is the pianist and musical director; Sarah Him, a Heritage Woods grad, is on cello. All have been in rehearsal since late June for the show, which Bunka is funding herself. Bunka’s resume is full of musical theatre experience, having studied theatre arts at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton and performed with Coquitlam’s Lindbjerg Academy, Theatre Under The Stars, Down Stage Right Productions, James Productions and Footlight Theatre, where she earned a Community Theatre Coalition award of merit for her portrayal of Anne in Anne of Green Gables. In her spare time, Bunka also teaches music and dance privately to young students. As for her company’s next performance, Bunka said she plans to keep the workload light, perhaps staging a musical every summer rather than every season. • Undiscovered Theatre’s John and Jen runs Thursday to Sunday (Aug. 4 to 7) at Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr., Port Moody) at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets at $20 are available through www.undiscoveredtheatre.com or at the door on the night of the show.

Art quilts at Leigh

About 30 years ago, Sechelt artist Pat Crucil worked on traditional quilts, the same ones parents place on children’s beds and adults use as a spread in their own sleeping quarters. Then, she took a program at Capilano University and transferred her love of paint onto cloth to design art quits that could be hung on walls or draped across banisters. She dyed, painted and did silk screens on white cloth — a surface that she found was more pliable than canvas. As well, “it has better movement and is softer to the touch, unlike paintings,” she said. Over the years, the Winnipeg native has created hundreds of art quilts, many of which have been exhibited around Canada and in Japan and the United States. They are much smaller than traditional quilts, she said, the largest being about 60 by 50 inches and the smallest about 18 by 40 inches. And tomorrow (Thursday), a retrospective of Crucil’s work will open at Leigh Square Community Arts Village in Port Coquitlam that will display about 20 of her pieces in an exhibit titled A Life of Stitches and Colour. The idea for a lookback came at the suggestion of Yvonne Chui, PoCo’s arts and culture co-ordinator. Crucil said she didn’t want to replicate a show she’s holding in Pender Harbour next month, which will feature her art quilts from the past year, “so the idea of a retrospective was interesting to me.” Crucil said colour, texture, travel, photography — and, most interestingly, rust and decay — are her sources of inspiration.

Sr. A’s look to next season By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

MARIO BARTEL/THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Team BC forward Kyra Bradley is sandwiched by a pair of Team Atlantic defenders in the first period of their Midget game at the National Girls Lacrosse Championships, being played this week at Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster.

Jr. A’s sweep playoff series opener Team will take on New Westminster next round By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

The Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs put an exclamation point on their firstround playoff series with a 21-3 victory over the Victoria Shamrocks on Saturday night on the way to the B.C. Jr. ‘A’ Lacrosse League finals. The win capped a three-game

sweep of the opening best-of-five round that saw the A’s continue their impressive regular season, extending their winning streak to 24-0 this year. Victoria’s shooters MALAWSKY struggled against a stingy Adanacs defence, while the A’s outscored their opponents 54-9 over the three games. Head coach Curt Malawsky said he was happy to see his team stick

to their system, no matter what the scoreboard said. “There is a potential to let off the gas a bit and I don’t think we did that,” he told The Tri-City News. “We stayed the course and we just executed. In the playoffs, you don’t want to lay off.” In the B.C. Jr ‘A’ Lacrosse League finals the A’s will take on rivals the New Westminster Salmonbellies, a team Coquitlam defeated three times during the regular season. However, Malawsky is taking nothing for granted. He said he knows his

squad is in for a tough series and the fact the A’s have had some success against New West means nothing in the post-season. “They are a good team,” he said. “We are basically throwing that record out the window. They are a wellrounded team and I know they are going to be prepared to beat us.” The first game of the final round will be played at the Coquitlam Sports Centre on Wednesday at 7 p.m. For more information go to bcjuniorlacrosse.com.

For the first time in 15 years the Coquitlam Sr. Adanacs will not be going to the post-season. The Western Lacrosse Association squad wrapped up the season with a 12-8 victory in a mean-nothing game against the Langley Thunder, a team that ended the A’s playoff hopes last week. But despite the A’s 7-11 record general manager Les Wingrove said he does not believe the club needs to go into a rebuilding year next season. “It is not like we have to blow this thing up,” he said. “If we had won last Wednesday we would have been in third place.” In the off-season the club will look to do some recruiting and Wingrove said a few trades could also take place. But the biggest chance the club has to improve itself could be at this year’s WLA draft, where Coquitlam has the first overall pick and the first and second pick of the second round. “We want to get better,” Wingrove said. “And we have some pretty good draft picks to get better with.” T here were some bright spots for the Adanacs this year. The team’s efforts to shore up its defence helped the squad achieve one of the lowest goals-against averages in the league. However, the team only scored 160 goals this season, the lowest number in the league.
