Last-minute shoppi This is a common scenario around the holidays. Shoppers have the best intentions to get their gifts early, but whether because of work obligations or social events, the task seems to get pushed further and further into December. Soon many are staring down the calendar experiencing sweaty palms. Many others may be putting off holiday shopping simply because of the current state of the economy and affordability. For the scores of shoppers who consciously or subconsciously wait until the last possible minute to shop, there are ways to survive and surprise friends and family with great gifts.

I Gift cards: They may not have sentimental meaning behind them, but gift cards are fast and easy. Chances are you can run into a store and be out with a handful of gift cards in less than 15 minutes, depending on lines at the checkout counter. Also, many supermarkets, bookstores and other retailers offer gift card kiosks enabling you to shop for different gift cards all in one place.

I Food and beverages: While everyone is heading to the mall in droves, you can be stepping inside of a gourmet food or spirits store. Splurge on fine cheeses or that trendy bottle of liquor that a gift recipient has mentioned but not yet purchased for him- or herself.

I E-certificates: Retailers like music or book sellers will e-mail a gift certificate code to the person of your choice on a selected date. For those who are never without an e-reader or mp3 player, digital gifts could fit the bill. I Gas card: It may sound funny and tacky, but a gas card from a brand-name station is a universally acceptable gift for anyone who drives regularly. With fluctuating gas prices, filling up the tank can be an expensive venture. Having a pre-paid gift card can help. Online retailers are also there to help last-minute shoppers. Many online retailers guarantee in-time-

Waiting until the last minute for shopping can induce some anxiety. But knowing about easy gifts for procrastinators can take the stress out of this type of shopping.

I Magazine subscription: A magazine subscription is an easy fix as a last-minute gift. Purchase one copy of the magazine at the newsstand and wrap it up nicely. Put a note that a year’s worth of this periodical is on the way. No one will suspect that the gift was a last-minute thought.

Canadians Say No to Useless Gifts Choose Charity This Holiday Season: Nature Conservancy of Canada The holiday frenzy is upon us. The rush is on to find the “perfect” gift for everyone on your holiday list. Unfortunately, for many, the last minute dash to the Christmas Eve finish line is guaranteed to end unhappily -- presents that are too big, too small, and too outlandish. Too bad! By some estimates as many as a third of holiday gift purchases are returned. In fact, up to 40 percent of all clothing purchased as presents will end up back at the stores it came from. Purchase with a Purpose The search for meaningful alternatives isn’t as challenging as you might think. More and more Canadians are opting for gifts that are as much a delight to give as they are to receive -- gifts with a purpose. In fact, a new Ipsos Reid poll, conducted on behalf of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), finds more than seven out of ten (74 percent) Canadians agree that knowing someone has made a donation in their name in lieu of a holiday gift makes them feel good. How do you Wrap a Reindeer? Many Canadian charities offer alternative gift giving programs during

the holiday season, but only one will let you put a piece of Canadian wilderness under the tree. As the country’s leading land conservation organization, NCC offers Gifts of Canadian Nature, a wonderful way to help protect the wild places and wildlife that we all treasure.

(604) 942-9739 www.elgindental.com

Starting at $40, Gifts of Canadian Nature can be personalized in honour of the recipient who also receives a fullcolour, eco-friendly calendar. You can choose to help protect habitat for some of our most threatened species such as Newfoundland marten, northern sawwhet owl, grizzly bear or Canada lynx. Also on the list this year, caribou -- Santa calls them Reindeer.

Remember me for all your mortgage needs.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962 we have helped to protect more than 2.2 million acres (890,300 hectares) nationwide. NCC is the only environmental charity in Canada given an A rating by MoneySense magazine for its fiscal responsibility.

Impaired Driving: Some drivers still need reminding over the holiday season With the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired drivers down by almost half in the past year, why is it still important to remind people not to drive while impaired? Allan Lamb, President and COO of the BCAA Road Safety Foundation says it is because a significant number of drivers still get behind the wheel of a vehicle after they’ve become impaired by alcohol or drugs. “There is an increase in social events at this time of year and a large number of those driving impaired are coming from the company of friends, colleagues and family,” stated Lamb. “It is simply not an option to drive impaired or to allow someone you know may be impaired to leave your company and get behind the wheel of a car.” In 2009, the BCAA Road Safety Foundation helped establish Alexa’s Team in memory of Alexa Middelaer who was killed by an impaired driver in May of 2008. Over the past three years the team has grown to over 400 RCMP and municipal police officers from all regions of the province. In November, Premier Christy Clark announced that alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths had been reduced by 40 per cent during the one-year period under Canada’s toughest penalties for impaired driving. Premier Clark also announced a commitment to help fund another tool for police, a mobile road safety bus that will focus on impaired driving education and enforcement. The BCAA Road Safety Foundation and the Middelaer family are encouraged by these two announcements and are pleased that British Columbians are working to save the lives of their friends, neighbours, co-workers and family members. Referring to the recent court ruling on the immediate roadside prohibition ruling, Lamb reminds drivers that police are enforcing impaired driving laws and any driver that blows over .08

will still face the possibility of charges under the Criminal Code. Here are a few tips from the BCAA Road Safety Foundation to keep you, your friends and family members safe on the roads this holiday season: Plan Your Night Out - Leave the car at home and take public transit, taxis or arrange for a designated driver service. You can even call a tow truck to take you and your car home. If the party is at a friend’s house, plan to spend the night and drive home the next day after the effects of the alcohol have worn off. Be a designated driver r - Take turns being the designated driver - when it’s your turn, stick to beverages without alcohol. Be a Good Host - Make sure your friends live to remember the good cheer. Have a variety of alcohol-fee beverages like pop, juice, coffee, tea or even trendy “mocktails” on hand. Make sure some of the guests have agreed to be designated drivers and will not consume any alcohol. If you are concerned that any of your guests are impaired, call a taxi or offer the spare bed or the couch. A disagreement over safety with a friend is better than risking the alternative. Role Modelling g - Parents, remember your kids watch and learn from you. It’s important that you demonstrate safe and healthy driving behaviours at all times. Don’t drive impaired Call Home Anytime - Young people like Christmas parties, too. Often they don’t want to admit that they or their friends drink or use drugs if it means their parents will be angry. To them it’s worth the risk to drive or ride with a driver who is impaired. A “family contract” agrees that the kids can call home at any hour for a safe ride home. Drug Impairment - Be aware of anyone who is impaired by something other than alcohol, whether it’s medications or illegal drugs such as marijuana. Mixing alcohol and drugs can be lethal for all road users.

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

Decorating together! colours for a more conservative style. To hang the ornaments on the tree, insert hooks from old ornaments into the Styrofoam or use paper clips that have been cut in two. Spiced citrus fruits Apart from the Christmas tree, other decorations can embellish your home including an illuminated centrepiece trimmed with evergreens, a salt dough garland or paper snowflakes glued to the windows. If you love home perfumes you could create a decorative bowl of spiced citrus fruits. Just stick some whole cloves into a few oranges, clementines, or tangerines.

The festive season is here and now is the time to decorate your home for Christmas. Rather than feel like this is a chore to be done alone, why not involve your family and turn it into a fun activity for everyone! The centrepiece of holiday decorations is, of course, the majestic Christmas tree adorned with beautiful ornaments. Choose plastic rather than glass ornaments to remove any danger of younger children breaking them. If your ornaments are looking a little worn, you can freshen them up with a coat of silver or gold paint, or create new ones with different decorative objects, such as pine cones. Irresistible Christmas ornaments You can also create some unique Christmas ornaments. Styrofoam balls and glue can be found in art supply stores or in the arts and crafts section of any department store and there are endless ways of decorating them. You can cover the balls with all sorts of different materials: Papier-mâché, fabric, felt, silk paper, metallic sequins, pearls, coloured cardboard discs, etc. Use several different colours and materials if you want to create a colourful effect for your Christmas tree or simply limit yourself to one or two materials with similar

Shop locally for your Christmas gifts Everyone has experienced massive crowds of Christmas shoppers in the bigger shopping centres in large towns. How about avoiding the hordes of people this year by finding your Christmas gifts closer to home; it can save you time and money! You’re sure to find what you need at the gift stores, florists and shops that sell locally produced items found in all areas of the country. Save time First of all, most of us don’t have much time to do our Christmas shopping. Reducing travelling distances between your home and the stores can save you a lot of time. By staying in the area where you live, you can avoid traffic jams and the frustrating search for a parking spot. Help when you need it By patronizing local shops on a regular basis the sales people come to know you and are able to give a more personalized service, perhaps they can even help you find the perfect gift! For example, the sales clerk down at the cosmetic boutique will know the name of the perfume your wife or girlfriend tried recently; or the salesman at the motorcycle store will know the type of helmet your husband has wanted for a long time. Local products and relaxation One great idea is a gift basket with a selection of locally produced products. In addition to supporting your area merchants,

purchasing this type of gift will also encourage local producers. Alternately, you could offer a gift certificate to a health spa or wellness retreat. Not only will this type of gift be beneficial to a loved one, but you’ll also discover great little places often hidden away somewhere close by!

Christmas shopping close to home boosts the local economy and saves you time!

Donations Needed Well it’s that time of year again. The white snow falls (sometimes) and it’s cold. We turn on our fireplace, turn up the Christmas station on the radio, put on our fluffy bunny slippers and sip eggnog and rum. We get together with family and laugh till the wee hours of the morning. We’ve shopped for our furry fur kids and they have more presents under the tree than you do. More toys with those amazing squeakers, squishy beds, shiny bowls and treats galore! But this isn’t Christmas for everyone. To some this is the time of year where it’s just plain cold and lonely. Given the nature of our business it’s time for us to pull up our socks, and help the fur kids in need, and Coquitlam Animal Shelter is just the place to start. Here at Healing Paws we feel that every fur kid deserves to feel like they are the most special thing ever. While we can’t be there to comfort and love and care for them‌ we can at least help bring others together who have hearts like we do, to help them get those toys with the amazing squeakers, squishy beds, shiny bowls‌and treats GALORE! For your convenience, bring goodies to Healing Paws Veterinary Care and we’ll deliver the goods for you. Help by donating blankets, towels, toys or even cash. Anything helps.

A show for Christmas As Christmas approaches we’re often in desperate need of gift ideas for someone who has everything... that person who has all the latest gadgets, the most fashionable clothes, the trendiest accessories, etc. Why not give them tickets to a show? There are so many different possibilities for you to choose from and it’s a gift that will be truly appreciated. There is, of course, the great Christmas classic, The Nutcracker by Hoffman, set to music by Tchaikovsky. The ideal gift for a family outing! There are lots of other possibilities, each more original than the other. Tickets for shows are already on sale for performances taking place a few weeks or months from their date of purchase.

You may also want to consider musicals, or shows featuring stand-up comics, magicians, dancers, plays, circuses, museums, etc. Tickets for a show or exhibit featuring an emerging artist are perfect if your gift is for someone who enjoys something different. You could even offer tickets for a popular conference given by a motivator, a coach, an athlete or an environmentalist. Don’t forget that many shows are performed in smaller towns as well as in large cities. Artists and performing companies organize tours to facilitate access to their shows. Cultural productions are available everywhere, making it possible for you to save time and money.

A pair of tickets for a show: The perfect gift for the person who has everything!

People thinking about getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks should think twice, said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung. “We want to remove as many impaired drivers from the road as possible,” he said. “We will be stepping up enforcement as we approach the holiday season. If you are driving in the Tri-City area, expect to see a lot of road checks.” The Red Nose service covers Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. It is free, although a donation is suggested. Those who wish to take advantage of the service can call 1-877-604-NOSE (6673) for a ride. British Columb Survey finds British Columbia making strides in green holiday traditions. According to a recent Ipsos Reid survey commissioned by Waste Management looking at Canadians’ environmental behaviours during the holidays, British Columbia is among the leaders in holiday sustainability. British Columbians have a relatively good awareness of recycling programs in their communities but still trail behind other provinces when it comes to green practices during the holidays. Nine out of ten (91%) of British Columbians know that they can recycle their Christmas trees, but only half (55%) are using reusable bags while shopping, falling behind Quebec with 65 per cent. “Plastic bags are a difficult material to deal with in the waste stream,” said Waste Management spokesperson, Chris Lynch. “While more plastic bags are being recycled, too many end up in the landfill, especially during the holidays when consumption is above average.” When it comes to Christmas decorations, LED lights have been found to be more energy efficient than the incandescent variety. The survey revealed that 56 per cent of British Columbians are using LEDs to decorate their homes during the holidays, more than Quebec with 42 per cent, but not quite as many as in the Saskatchewan/Manitoba region with 67 per cent. “LED tree lights can save 90 per cent more energy than traditional incandescent holiday lights, said Lynch. “With a lifespan of approximately 20,000 hours, they can last for 40 holiday seasons! LED lights also burn less hot and reduce any risk associated with burns or fires.” Overall, the survey revealed that Canadians across the country are gearing up for a green holiday season, as public awareness about wastereducing strategies grows. Waste Management offers the following tips to Canadians interested in conserving this holiday season: • When wrapping presents, look for alternatives to buying new wrapping paper. This will save on costs and ensure that leftover paper does not go to waste. • Remember to bring reusable shopping bags with you to the mall as well as the grocery store, to help reduce the amount of plastic bags in the waste stream. • When those new toys come in, make sure the old ones do not end up in the trash. Find a local consignment store or shelter where you can donate old, working devices and clothing. • Don’t be shy, re-gift! Re-gifting unwanted presents cuts back on holiday spending and waste. • Recycle your Christmas tree! Many communities have tree-mulching programs that will compost your tree after the holidays. Contact your community’s works department to find out if there’s a program in your community. The full Ipsos Reid survey survey results can be found at: www.ipsos-na.com/news-polls/ pressrelease.aspx?id=5425 ABOUT WASTE MANAGEMENT Waste Management, Inc., based in Houston, Texas, is the leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America. Holiday lighting tips for a bright, safe & energy-efficient season!

The perfect “wild” gift for someone who has everything The BC SPCA is urging you to go “wild” with your gift-giving this holiday season. For that person on your list who loves wildlife and the environment, how about honouring them by sponsoring a special wild animal in need in their name? This year the BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) treated 10% more animals than ever before, from tiny baby hummingbirds to eagles, owls, otters and deer fawns. One of Wild ARC’s biggest costs caring for such

diverse species is the wide variety of food they eat. Although some foods are donated by businesses and individuals, many items are highly specialized and must be purchased from unique suppliers in Eastern Canada and the U.S. More animals means more food, and this extra food is a strain on limited financial resources as Wild ARC relies almost exclusively on public donations. Help wildlife and scratch off those hard to buy for people from your list this year by giving a little wild gift.

THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Part of the charm and tradition of the holiday season are the lights: colourful twinkling lights brightening up the long nights and lighting up people’s homes. With that in mind, BC Hydro is offering some helpful tips on how to enjoy a bright, safe and energy-efficient holiday season. Choose LED seasonal lights. LED lights last 10 times longer than incandescent lights, are more durable, and don’t heat up making them safer to use. Decorating with LED bulbs is 90% more efficient than using incandescent bulbs. If you have your lights up all December for an average of 6

A selection of special wild animals can be sponsored via our website at www.wildarc.com. Donation levels range from $25 to $100 and are tax deductible. Your gift recipient will receive a beautiful wildlife e-card or printable card featuring stunning photographs from our annual wildlife photography contest. Sponsorship certificates can also be purchased. You can obtain them directly from Wild ARC at 1020 Malloch Road in Metchosin, or by calling 250-478-9453.

hours a day, you could save over $20 by using LEDs versus incandescent bulbs. Tips for outdoor lights: • Use Canadian Standards Association (CSA)-approved lights, cords, plugs and sockets that are marked for outdoor use or wet locations. • Be careful with the ladder! Get someone to hold the bottom of the ladder so that it doesn’t move or secure your ladder by tying it off and staking it to the ground. • Before you put light strings on a shrub, tree or your house, check them for breaks or signs of deterioration. Replace any light

strings with frayed cords or loose connections. • Keep electrical connections off the ground. Use eave clips or insulated staples, rather than nails and tacks, to hold light strings in place. • Keep wiring clear of metal parts such as ornamental railings and drainpipes, to prevent any risk of shock from an electrical current. • Turn off your holiday lights before going to bed, and never leave lights on when you are away from home, unless they are connected to a timer or photocell. • Take down your lights after the holidays! Don’t leave them up

year-round. Cords and bulbs will deteriorate, reducing their safety and shortening their life. Safety tips for your tree: • Keep your tree at least three feet away from heat vents, baseboards and fireplaces. • Secure your tree so pets and children can’t knock it over. • Replace broken bulbs and light sets that have cracked or corroded sockets, frayed plugs, bare wires or loose connections. If you’re using a real tree: • Keep your tree fresh by sawing off an inch or two from the trunk base at an angle. Immediately place the tree in a water-filled, no-

tip stand and regularly check to make sure the tree stand always has plenty of water. • Unplug the lights before watering the tree. • Keep cords and lights away from the water. • Keep a fire extinguisher handy and your smoke detectors in good working order. If you’re using an artificial tree: • Make sure your artificial tree is not flammable. • Keep metallic trees away from electrical cords or plugs.
