‘Before, I was just going through life. Now, I am actually living it’ Breast cancer survivors suit up in pink and paddle for fun and fitness, and to help one another By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS
W
hen Linda Hopwo joined the Abreast in a Boat dragon boat team last year, she was hoping to meet some fellow breast cancer survivors and get a bit of exercise. But she also found a floating support group. Since her first time on the water with the team, she said has felt more empowered and has discovered confidence she didn’t know she had. “I am in the best shape I have been in years,” said Hopwo, a director and vice-chair of communications for the Abreast in a Boat society. “I have probably gone outside my comfort zone I don’t know how many times. “Before, I was just going through life. Now, I am actually living it.” Abreast in a Boat is made up of women who have survived breast cancer and want to raise awareness about the disease while having fun. Adorned in bright pink shirts and lifejackets, the team paddles on Burrard Inlet three times a week, training to compete for various events. Some of the members have even gone on to paddle in international events in Malaysia, South Africa, Singapore and Las Vegas. The group started in 1996 with an initial team of 25 women and has expanded to other communities in the Lower Mainland, including Langley, Richmond and Vancouver. It has even inspired groups overseas and today there are more than 150 teams around the world. Hopwo is part of a club that has operated at Burnaby’s Barnet Marine park for years but the group decided to move to Port Moody’s Rocky Point park for the upcoming season. Now that the team has found a new home, Leslie Lewis, the society’s president, is hoping to attract new members. Women who join run in age from their early 30s to 85, and have a variety of fitness levels are welcome. Aside from the fun and exercise, Lewis has also benefited from being around people who have survived the disease. “It was really nice having women who have been down a similar road that I could talk to and lean on,” she said. “It was very helpful.” Before the group formed in 1996, there was a

It was thought that lymphedema could occur, causing a painful swelling of the arm and chest area that is sometimes the result of surgery. Today, studies have proven that survivors can exercise without increasing their risk of lymphedema
and those with active lifestyles can reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. “Studies have now shown that the survival rate is greater for woman that do lead active lifestyles,” said Diane Wahl, a member of the Rocky Point club. “There is life after a breast cancer diagnosis — a fun, happy, active life.” gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Shift in federal health funding will cost B.C. No sense in tying health funding to economy: NDP By Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS
VICTORIA – The federal government’s new formula for health care transfers is expected to cost B.C. $256 million a year starting in 2014. The change is not related to Ottawa’s move to tie health funding to economic growth, which doesn’t take effect until 2018. Before that happens, the federal transfer is moving to a percapita formula and ending dedicated funding aimed at certain surgical wait times and other priorities identified in past federal-provincial agreements. B.C. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the funding formula change amounts to a substantial reduction for B.C. while Alberta’s transfers are expected to go up. Falcon wants the

A change in the federal formula for giving health funding to the provinces will cost B.C. big time, says provincial Finance Minister Kevin Falcon. federal funding to reflect the aging population in B.C. and some Atlantic provinces, and the extra costs that implies. NDP leader Adrian Dix accused Falcon of supporting the federal decision before he fully understood the implications. B.C. is already eighth among Canadian provinces in per-capita spending on health care, and the new formula cuts B.C. while rewarding other provinces, he said.
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced the new provincial transfer policy Monday in Victoria at a meeting with provincial finance ministers in Victoria. Health transfers will continue to grow by 6% per year for six more years. Increases after that are to match economic growth plus inflation, with a minimum annual increase of 3%. Falcon praised Flaherty’s move to con-
nect health care budgets to the economy, to protect B.C. and Canada’s tripleA credit rating. Falcon said B.C. will press for two changes: a formula for population aging and incentive payments for “provinces that are undertaking innovation and are doing their bit to ensure that we will have a sustainable health care system. NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston said Falcon has reversed his position on connecting health budgets and economic growth. Premier Christy Clark made a similar suggestion during the BC Liberal leadership race last spring, and soon found herself under attack by rivals. “George Abbott and Kevin Falcon both said it was unrealistic to tie it to an artificial measure like that, Ralston said. “They were saying that if you have bad times, you’ll be forced to find hundreds of millions of dollars in health care cuts. tfletcher@blackpress.ca
If it’s too cold for trash, they’ll wait By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS
T he city of Por t Coquitlam will collect green waste later in the day this winter whenever overnight temperatures fall below zero in an effort to avoid having to deal with frozen compost. The changes were initiated after a cold snap earlier this month when waste was freezing inside the carts and would not dislodge when crews attempted to empty them. Whenever overnight temperatures fall below zero this winter, residents can expect their grey carts (garbage) to be collected first and their green carts to be collected later in the day, when the temperature is warmer. Residents are requested to have both carts at the curbside before 7:30 a.m. if they are unsure of the overnight temperature. As a guideline, if there is frost on car windows, it is cold enough to freeze the contents of the green cart. If any solid waste collections are missed or the contents are not fully emptied, residents may request a return pickup if they are unable to wait until their next collection day. Call the operations centre at
T he city of Por t Coquitlam could save tens of thousands of dollars in WorkSafeBC fees after the municipality was recognized for its exemplary safety record last week. PoCo was awarded with a certificate of recognition after the city scored 92% on its occupational health and safety audit and 85% on its disability management programs. The scores mean the city is eligible for a 15% reduction in WorkSafeBC fees, which amounts to a savings of more than $150,000 every three years. “This is great news, Mayor Greg Moore said in a press release. “I think our citizens appreciate that their city is providing a good quality work environment. It helps us deliver a higher quality of service and at the same time it’s saving our taxpayers money. Cities across B.C. are undertaking the B.C. Municipal Safety Association’s external audits in an attempt to be certified and achieve the WorkSafeBC incentives. gmckenna@tricitynews.com
Several homes near Barnet Highway in Port Moody were without water Wednesday afternoon. A water main broke in the early afternoon, affecting homes near Clarke Road and Douglas Street. City staff originally expected service to be re-
stored at 4 p.m. but later said it would take until 6 to 8 p.m. before all taps were flowing again on Clarke between Douglas and Elgin streets. Residents who noticed dirty water coming out of their taps (due to sediment being stirred up in the nearby water main)
were advised to run their cold water tap until the water runs clear. Utility crews were expected to flush the mains overnight, once the repairs were complete. Anyone with questions is asked to call Port Moody’s operations division at 604-469-4574.

• Clear your catch basins, and help avoid winter wipeouts and ooding. Snow, ice, leaves and debris gathered around catch basins can also turn into unexpected skating rinks for unassuming pedestrians.

Burglars look for signs that nobody is home so if you’re going to be away over the holidays, Coquitlam RCMP advises you make sure mail and newspapers are picked up and, if necessary, snow is shovelled. COMSTOCK
Keep your home safe when you’re away over holidays The Coquitlam RCMP is reminding people who are planning to be away from home over the holidays to make sure their residences are secure and they are not leaving themselves vulnerable to theft. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said it is important for people who are planning to travel over the holidays to keep several things in mind before leaving their home: Newspaper,
mail and any other home deliveries should be stopped as any piles of uncollected papers in front of the door can be a hint for thieves that no one is home. Travellers should only tell close friends and family that they will be away and should avo i d b ro a d c a s t i n g their plans over social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. Other tips include: • Ask a trusted neigh-
bour to watch out for visitors at the home. • Use timers in different areas of the house to turn lights and radios on and off at different times. • Turn off all alarm clocks and phone rings. • Turn off or unplug the garage door opener. • And arrange for someone to shovel your sidewalk if it snows. In related news, a man and a woman were arrested last week after
alle gedly breaking into a garage on Sprice Avenue in Coquitlam. According to Chung, Mounties tracked a pair of suspects with a police dog. Paul Lindsell, 30, and 45-year-old Barbara Lawrence were arrested a few blocks away. They are facing charges of breaking and entering. • For more information and tips, go to coquitlam.rcmp.ca.

Play it safe with candles & Xmas lights
Christmas lights and decorative candles may give a home a festive feel but they can also be hazardous, according to Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services. The holidays present a unique set of fire dangers, mixing lights and decorations with combustible materials such as trees and wrapping paper. PoCo’s fire department said it is important for residents to choose flame-resistant decorations and blow out candles prior to leaving a room. Only intact strings of lights without loose light bulbs or broken or frayed wires should be used for decorating the home or Christmas tree, and people should avoid overloading their electrical circuits. Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services also recommends people: • keep anything that can burn at least one metre away from portable space heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, candles or wood stoves; • use clips when hanging holiday lights as staples may damage electrical cords; • use a maximum of three sets of lights per extension cord; • buy real trees only if they have green needles that are hard to pull from branches and keep them watered; • and test all smoke alarms on every level of the home (batteries should be replaced at least once a year). Mariner Way was shut down for a couple of hours Monday after a valve on a propanepowered van ruptured, spraying fuel on the road. Emergency crews did not have to travel far to respond to the incident, which took place in front of the Mariner Way fire hall shortly after 8 a.m. “It was a vehicle powered by propane and it sprung a leak,” said Coquitlam Fire Chief Tony Delmonico. “Fire crews used a hose line to control the vapour.” Nine crew members responded, including a ladder truck and a fire engine. A second off-leash area opens in Port Coquitlam Dog owners in Port Coquitlam’s downtown have a new off-leash area where they can run their animals. A 0.3-acre dog park opened at Maple Street and Bury Avenue close Gates and Lions parks earlier this week. It will provide dog owners with an alternative to running their animals off-leash — against city bylaws — on trails and local sports fields, the city said. Because the park is situated near homes and apartment buildings, those who use the facility should be mindful of their dogs’ barking and should only use the off-leash area between dawn and dusk. Work on the project began Oct. 12 and was completed earlier this

PoCo residents own an estimated 9,000 dogs and dog off-leash areas were identified as a significant need when the city developed its parks and recreation master plan in 2007. In early 2010, the city opened its first dog park — the Shaughnessy Street off-leash area — and sites in Citadel Heights and northeast PoCo have been identified for future parks. • For more information about PoCo’s animal services go to www. portcoquitlam.ca/dogs or go to www.portcoquitlam.ca/dogpark.

Giving all year

Q WHAT WE THINK:
T
he holiday season is a busy time for everyone — and it can be expensive, too, if you add up the cost of entertaining and gifts. But for many, Christmas is more than a time to splurge. It’s a chance to reflect on one’s good fortune and to give back to charitable groups that do good works all year. This is what Tri-City residents do when they buy one extra toy for the toy bank run by Share Family and Community Services, make a financial donation to Share or another charity, or drop in an extra can of food in the collection bin. These contributions are important for the help they provide struggling families. To those who gave this year, thank you. And those who forgot need not worry. Charitable donations are appreciated no matter what time of year they are made.

Look at the geese – it’s a wonderful life AS I SEE IT Andrea Phillpotts Some 20,000 snow geese are part of the local flock – and they travel far and wide
T
he slate grey sky fluttered with the swirling white wings above us. As far as the eye could see were snow geese in motion, dipping and soaring like snowflakes. It was like being inside a snow globe. Joggers stopped in their tracks, cars pulled over and I stopped work to gawk out the window. Migration V’s passed overhead like Canadian snowbirds — the ones with jet engines. There were birds everywhere. It was a breathtaking, miraculous sight for an ordinary fall day.
Of course, there was noise and mess. That many birds don’t arrive without a rush hour’s worth of honking and commotion. Looking up at their magnificence, I was reminded equally of their mortality by the occasional splat of goose poo hitting the pavement. Through the odds of their sheer numbers, it’s amazing that more people weren’t hit. The avenues were fouled by muddy green spatters and stumpy turds. On the school field, they bustled around like popcorn in a giant green bowl. Each was intent on nibbling up soggy vegetation while newcomers stretched their landing gear-like feet and hopped down to join them. I did a bit of research. According to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, our “Fraser-Skagit” flock of snow geese is made up of up to 20,000 animals. If you study them carefully, you can sometimes make out smaller family groups amongst the mayhem. These birds likely came from Wrangel Island in Russia, north of Siberia. Some will stay here, others

Columnist Andrea Phillpotts calls snow geese “magical migrators” that grace our skies — while fouling our fields. will continue on to California. I knew I should be thinking about the cost of keeping our children’s fields safe from poo, how schools spend precious school money on chasing them away. Even worse, the birds often will turn around and return shortly after being evacuated. Like raccoons
and rats, they inconvenience us with their animal lifestyle, making our human lives less clean, less orderly. Still, I get a perverse pleasure in how Mother Nature scrambles the controlling efforts of her most arrogant species. With all of our intelligence, technology and communication, humans are constantly being humbled by nature’s power. We may think ourselves near invincible but will regularly get our comeuppance in the form of extreme weather, natural disasters and even these pretty bird brains. So while it might just be another snow-less Christmas this year, we may still be visited by snow in the form of these magical migrators. Step around the green on the ground and raise your head to the beauty of this natural wonder. It’s a wonderful life. FACE TO FACE: In the spirit of the season, the debating partners are...
Arm in arm instead of Face to Face I
ANDY RADIA
JIM NELSON
Following a tradition started several years ago, columnists Jim Nelson and Andy Radia are foregoing their usual format for this, their final column before Christmas, to write a combined piece on things they agree on.
Speak up! You can comment on any story you read at www.tricitynews.com
n keeping with the spirit of the holiday and tradition, your Face to Face columnists are, for this week, Arm in Arm for our annual Peace on Earth column. After having met recently for a holiday drink (alas, just coffee), we were again surprised at the number of things about which we agree, including... Andy Radia: While my debating partner and I sit on opposite sides of the political spectrum, like most Canadians, we have similar goals and values. We all want to live in a prosperous nation with safe streets, reliable health care for our seniors and a solid education system for our children. Jim Nelson: All worthy Canadian goals. Our ends are similar (though mine is slightly larger), the means we espouse different. Face to Face is a microcosm of Canada’s proud tradition of civilized political discourse and, so, in recognition of this, I have removed my pink underwear for this holiday edition. Andy: And I’ve removed my camouflage gear for the season. Indeed, when looking back at 2011, there are several topics on which my colleague and I actually agreed. For instance, Jack Layton’s death was inarguably the top political story of 2011 but it was an event that transcended politics. His death touched an emotional chord with Canadians of all political stripes. I didn’t
agree with many of his policies but respected the man for the way he conducted himself in a reasonable, honourable and positive manner. Jim: I think most Canadians were surprised at the level of emotion and respect we felt as a nation in response to Jack Layton’s death. Part appreciation, part patriotism, our national response was a reinvigorating, non-partisan, outpouring of unity. The last year also saw the final outpouring of funding for the long-awaited Evergreen Line. My colleague and I both understand its postponement in favour of the Canada Line but we agree that it’s long past overdue. Still, before buying condos in Burquitlam, we might wait until shovels actually hit the ground. Andy: Certainly, the Evergreen line has been a long-time coming. Our Tri-City mayors and councils must be commended for their unwavering efforts to make the rapid transit line a reality. The project is evidence that when all three levels of government work together, great things can happen. Jim: We also agree that during this season of brotherly and sisterly love, governments need to work together to address the alarming economic inequity in Canada. In 2011, the Occupy Canada Movement and the tragedy in Attawapiskat have focused
75% of the vote. Speaking of Santa, my colleague and I both feel that the advent of the digital world has helped make the logistics of Santa’s night of worldwide philanthropy infinitely more possible for him and his unionized elves (who probably retire on bloated pensions). Andy: And those elves better not strike or the Harper government may just have to legislate them back to work. I don’t believe Santa’s red suit, however, is indicative of his political disposition. And I agree with my colleague that technology has indeed made Christmas a lot easier for Saint Nick. With iPhones and iPads and Blackberries, he can keep track of his naughty or nice lists, receive emails instead of letters, and better manage the whole production and distribution process. In closing, I hope Santa is kind to you, Jim, to the staff and management at The Tri-City Newss and to you, the readers. Jim: And to you, Andy. Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings and kudos to The Newss and our editor for allowing — nay, encouraging — our weekly partisan bickering. And to our faithful readers, whose ire we raise weekly, I wish you a 99% Merry Christmas and a Happy 1% New Year.
Please send letters to the editor to newsroom@tricitynews.com. Canadians on the unacceptable disparity between rich and poor — something must be done. Andy: In Attawapiskat today, there are elderly people living in sheds without water or electricity. In a wealthy country such as ours, it’s indefensible that any group of Canadians are living in those types of conditions. Governments, businesses, and non-profits need to intervene and find ways to narrow our society’s income disparities. Now, looking ahead, Jim and I are both looking forward to a year without any election campaigns. After two federal elections, one provincial campaign and a civic election in the last three years, 2012 will be mercifully election-free. British Columbians, even political junkies like us, are tired of the vicious political attack ads, the constant robo-calls, the fundraising drives and the piles of election literature falling on our doorsteps. Jim: No elections for awhile — nice. That said, my colleague and I also agree that if an election were held in 2012 featuring as candidates Jesus Christ, Carole Taylor, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and Santa Claus, Ms. Watts would win with

TRI-CITYY LETTERS ‘We are all neighbours’
Thanks for bursary The Editor, I am the recipient of The Tri-City News bursary at Douglas College and I would like to thank you for the generous donation. I have been in Canada for 15 years and live here with my husband and two children. I am a nursing student at Douglas College and unable to work full-time. This generous donation will help me further my studies. God bless you. S. Ahmadian
The Editor The volunteer organization I belong to sponsored two single moms, each with a daughter, through Share’s Caring Neighbour program. Tonight, I had the privilege of delivering to one of the families the food and gift certificates collected on behalf of the youth and volunteers with whom I work. I was met by an overwhelmed and teary mom who was beside herself with thanks for what we had brought. She quietly told me she had just fed her daughter toast for dinner because that’s all they had. She said that this was now going to be the best Christmas. To those who think people who use the food bank are lazy scammers, you have no idea. We are all neighbours. Share the love. Misty McGill, Port Coquitlam
Editor’s note: The bursary Ms. Ahmadian received came from an endowment established by The Tri-City News and its parent company, Black Press. For information on the Tri-City News bursary, please visit www.douglas.bc.ca or email foundation@douglascollege.ca.
The Tri-City News welcomes letters to the editor. Send your letters to newsroom@tricitynews.com.

More safety moves for Gatensbury Rd. Close calls with speeders prompt calls for action By Sarah Payne THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Lori Holdenried is relieved that traffic calming measures will soon be installed on the upper portion of Gatensbury Road but said they’re still not enough. “I think they’re not understanding the gravity of the problem, the Port Moody resident said last week after learning that centreline delineators and signage improvements will be added to the top curve on Gatensbury, which is shared with Coquitlam. Holdenried first petitioned PoMo council for traffic calming measures in the summer of 2010 after six vehicles in a six-month span lost control and veered onto residents’ front lawns on the upper portion of Gatensbury. A short time later, several traffic safety improvements were made to the road, all in the lower portion. But for Holdenried and others on Gatensbury, things have only contin-
ued to go downhill — despite an email from city staff saying Gatensbury was “considered safe. Last week, Holdenried snapped photos of a vehicle that had been speeding south, lost control and ended up wedged in the ditch on the opposite side of the road. In early November, her vehicle was hit by a speeder just after she pulled out of her driveway to take her sixyear-old daughter to a skating class. Less than two weeks before that, a car heading north on Gatensbury left the road and slammed into the back of their parked car with enough force to move it 15 feet. The speed limit on Gatensbury is 30 km/h but a Moody Centre traffic study clocked the average speed at 54 km/h. The street is a northsouth collector road linking Coquitlam’s Como Lake area and Moody Centre but Holdenried said it’s not designed for the volume of commuter traffic now using Gatensbury. “It’s a more systemic problem, she said, noting traffic studies show about 6,000 vehicles are
using Gatensbury every day. “When a commuter decides to leave a major roadway, they will not change their driving behaviour. She wants to see a solution that will prevent such large volumes of commuter traffic from using Gatensbury, a residential street with single-family homes, particularly with more development on the way for Moody Centre as the Evergreen Line approaches. PoMo acting city manager Tim Savoie said the upper Gatensbury improvements are being done based on concerns raised by the neighbourhood. “After hearing those concer ns, our engineering department, in consultation with Coquitlam, came up with the latest proposal... that should help alleviate some of the problems there, he said. “From the city’s perspective, we feel the solution is a safe solution. The delineators and signage are expected to cost up to $8,000, with possible funding coming from ICBC. spayne@tricitynews.com
www.tricitynews.com
2 wheels, 1 sign A Port Moody resident is hoping to bring a new form of advertising to the city. Neil Doyle wants council to change the sign bylaw so he can operate his new business, Bicycle Billboards, in PoMo. Doyle says his bike, with an electric motor for hills and a 4x4 sign rack trailer, is a “green alternative to diesel advertising trucks the bylaw was intended to keep out. “On St. Johns, Murray and Clarke, there are lots of businesses that don’t have enough exposure, Doyle told council last week. “People go whizzing by and they don’t even know what’s in their backyard. He has already received approval in Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver for Bicycle Billboards. Coun. Rick Glumac commended Doyle for his entrepreneurial spirit but declined to support his bid because the large billboards would cause “visual clutter. Coun. Diana Dilworth noted the large size of Doyle’s signs “contravenes the sign bylaw in so many ways. Council agreed to handle the delegation request its next meeting on Jan. 9. spayne@tricitynews.com

Dealing with ggreen waste during the winter • Green waste is still collected weekly during the winter months. Cooler temperatures mean that food scraps won’t pose odour issues like you may have experienced during warmer months. • If Port Moody gets a blast of winter weather, use kraft paper bags or yard waste bags to line your green waste cart to keep waste from freezing and sticking to the inside of your cart • At this time of year, don’t forget to include: - All food scraps (including bones from that holiday turkey!) and food soiled papers like paper towels, napkins and paper plates - Pizza boxes with food

Metro hits dirty diesel By Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS
Owners of the most soot-spewing backhoes, excavators and other diesel equipment in Metro Vancouver must now register their machines and pay hefty annual fees. A new regional bylaw takes effect Jan. 1, 2012 that Metro hopes will prod equipment operators to upgrade to cleaner diesel technology to help reduce cancer, respiratory illness and other health risks from particulate pollution. The most polluting off-road diesel engines are classified Tier 0 and must be registered and labelled with a ‘T0’ decal to operate in Metro.
They’re being charged $4 per horsepower for 2012, but Metro intends to steadily raise the fees in the years ahead and expand the rules to more machines. Fees that start now in the hundreds of dollars – for a 100-horse excavator, for example – could be in the thousands within a few years. Owners who retire a Tier 0 machine or upgrade it to Tier 2 or better will be refunded 80 per cent of the fees paid in the previous three years. Diesel soot emissions are responsible for about two-thirds of the lifetime cancer risk from air pollution in the region. Off-road equipment accounts for more than
40 per cent of diesel emissions in Metro and the machines have not been upgraded as swiftly as on-road diesel trucks, which make up about eight per cent of emissions. Ships are the biggest emitter at 43 per cent, but off-road machines are considered a bigger danger because they operate closer to where people live, work and play. Diesel engines smaller than 25 horsepower are exempt, as are farm machines, emergency generators and recreational machines like ATVs and snowmobiles. • For more info see www.metrovancouver/ nonroaddiesel. jnagel@blackpress.ca

THE THINGS-TO-DO GUIDE: Time to be merry and bright
Merry Christmas, & good will to all THE TRI-CITY NEWS
C
hristmas is here, ready or not. Have a jolly good time with family and friends, and by all means, have a safe and happy holiday.
Saturday, Dec. 24 BE ARTY
Looking for a little artistic inspiration? Check out the Leigh Square Community Arts Village’s ongoing exhibit, the Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence for Book Design in Canada. It showcases the myriad details that go into book design, and celebrates the best of this unique art form in Canada. Winners of this annual contest go on to compete against books from around the world, so be sure to stop by Leigh Square to see them first. The Gathering Place is opening from noon to 4 p.m., with the Outlet open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
BE ACTIVE
Every year we vow not to, and every year we eat (and drink) too much. Luckily for us over-indulgers, Coquitlam’s recreation facilities are open today, so why not start a new tradition? Grab the kids and some swim trunks and check out the City Centre aquatic complex (pool & weight room open at 5:30 a.m. and the waves start up at 10:30 a.m.) or the Poirier leisure complex (lengths and leisure swimming opens at 6 a.m.). Both facilities close at 3 p.m., giving you plenty of time to make up for all that exercise with all those Christmas chocolates laying around. Visit www.coquitlam.ca for more details.
BE WINTERY
Nothing says winter like a few spins around the rink. Good thing the Port Coquitlam recreation complex is offering a Christmas Eve skate today, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Be sure to bundle up and enjoy a bit of skating fun with family or friends before
the big day arrives. Regular admission rates apply. Visit portcoquitlam.ca for details.
Sunday, Dec. 25 BE HAPPY
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Joyous Kwanzaa. Whatever you and your family are celebrating this weekend, we hope it’s a chance to connect with loved ones, share a great meal and feel grateful for all the blessings in life. And wherever you’re celebrating, be sure you and your guests get back home safely.
BE WOWED
It’s Christmas day, and that makes it a blockbuster. For movies, that is. Opening today at the Coquitlam SilverCity theatre are Darkest Hour, about a group of friends who find themselves stranded in Moscow (and fighting an alien attack, no less) and War Horse, Steven Spielberg’s tearjerker about a friendship between a young man and his horse set against the backdrop of the First World War. Looking for some more uplifting material? There’s also the Adventures of Tintin, The Muppetss and Arthur Christmas. Check out the movie complex’s new VIP theatres, where guests aged 19 and older can have serving staff bring beverages and dinner menu treats brought right to their seats.
Monday, Dec. 26 BE PATIENT
Ah, Boxing Day. Just the thought of long line-ups and crowded stores is enough to make many opt for staying in. For those brave enough to run the shopping gauntlet, there are sure to be some good deals on everything from electronics to clothing. Just remember to pack some patience along with your wallet. Please send Things-To-Do guide submissions to spayne@tricitynews.com.

Tri-City News readers responded to our call for seasonal photos. On this page are some more of the selected submissions. The images on this page are: 1) Jolene Bonhomme took her dog Bella for a walk through her neighbourhood — and a visit to Whoville. 2) Tiger and Patch, photographed by Terry Drexler of Coquitlam, try to pass as reindeer. Santa wasn’t fooled. 3) Kurt Gebeshuber grabbed this image of a winter wonderland walk with the dogs on Burnaby Mountain. 4) And Kym Bain snapped this photo of a tasty dream house — in miniature — at the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s annual gingerbread house competition.

Talk, and not just turkey You can kick off 2012 with a chat — a thoughtful chat — at Dialogue and Discourse Jan. 3, 9:45 a.m. at Coquitlam’s Dogwood Pavilion. Moderated by Jim McArthur, McArthur a communications consultant and doctoral candidate at Simon Fraser University, the discussion will start with this question: “Can we strike a balance between disruption and protest?” Participants will join other adults to meet and participate in a lively discussion, and they’re encouraged to bring your point of view and listen to others. The two-hour session includes coffee/tea and the fee is $5.25. You can pre-register or drop-in. To register and for more information, call 604-927-6098. Dogwood Pavilion is a Coquitlam recreation facility for adults 50 and older and is located at 624 Poirier St., entrance off of Winslow Avenue. Also: Has science disenchanted our world? That’s the question to be addressed at the first SFU Philosophers’ Cafe of the new year, being held at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Gathering Place in Port Coquitlam’s Leigh Square. Admission is free. Moderated by Graham Forst and co-sponsored by Leigh Square Community Arts Village, the discussion will cover a variety of angles, including: Science empowers us by helping us overcome technical obstacles and superstition but what happens to the music and magic of myth and metaphor in the face of scientific authority? What do people lose and gain when science answers our questions. Call 778-782-5215 or visit www.philosopherscafe.net for more information. Everyone is welcome to attend; registration and experience not required.

SUCCESS!
More than 4,000 winter coats, sweaters, scarves and mittens for people in need were donated to the 16th annual Coats for Kids campaign this and last month. Organized by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, 29 GVHBA-member companies — including in the Tri-Cities — turned their businesses into temporary drop-off locations for the effort, which ran from from Nov. 21 to Dec. 9. The donations will be handed out by the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. “There was a phenomenal response to Coats for Kids again this year. We applaud our participating members and the men, women and children who contributed new and gently used winter apparel. The spirit of the season was definitely alive in the warm hearts of those generous individuals, said GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson, in a news release.
CHEQUE IN At right, Coast Capital Savings’ Tara MacKenzie, Bic Dhami and Scott Flemming this month deposited $5,000 with Heather Scott (second from right) of Share Family and Community Services to help with the organization’s Christmas campaign.

Above, Maya was one of the many children at Coquitlam’s Burquest Jewish Centre on Dewdney Trunk Road on Sunday who lit the menorah to mark the beginning of Hanukkah, which officially started Wednesday. At left, a fitness company pumped in $9,500 to Port Moody’s Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation this month through its second annual Train the Trainer event. Innovative Fitness held a number of activities such as a team dance-off and sumo suit wrestling to bring in the cash. Spokesperson Carly Foster said clients “paid back their trainers at $50 for five-minute time slots. “There was also a live auction full of great donations from local businesses that helped the Innovative Fitness group raise an amazing amount of money for a great local charity, she said.
Coquitlam RCMP’s third annual 911 We Care hauled in more than 500 gifts, 650 pounds of food and nearly $300 in gift cards for Share Family and Community Services, which runs food banks in the Tri-Cities.
PEACE OUT
A 13-year-old student at Coquitlam’s Scott Creek middle school was last week named the zone winner of a peace poster contest sponsored by the Barnet Lions Club. Ashley Song’s artwork will now be submitted to the club’s international level. All 16 peace posters from Scott Creek middle will be on display at the Port Moody Public Library (100 Newport Dr.) from January to March. Change in commenting For the last few years, as tricitynews.com and other Black Press websites have garnered more attention, some readers have raised concerns about one issue in particular: the fact we allow visitors to post anonymous comments. The policy has led to some unpleasant and mean-spirited postings. It has also raised an inconsistency in our Black Press brand. Our community newspapers don’t print anonymous letters yet we’ve allowed our websites to become a place where people can hide their identity while occasionally taking shots at one another. That policy has changed. People are now only be able to comment by using their Facebook account, which means their name, often even their photograph, will be linked to the statements they post. Tricitynews.com is not alone in making this shift. Several media companies, including latimes.com, equally troubled by the vitriolic trend of anonymous comments, are turning to Facebook to power their website commenting. All of Black Press newspaper websites in B.C., Alberta and Washington State will make the switch. Our sister publications that have already switched have continued to see spirited discourse among those who post comments,
yet the discourse is at a much higher level and commentators are generally well-mannered and on-topic. This new approach won’t be perfect. People without a Facebook account won’t be able to participate in online discussions. Still, we’re enthused to be in the vanguard of this movement. It shows we’re listening to our readers and responding. It places us more deeply into the powerful world of social media: By using Facebook Comments, we’re embracing a social medium with 800 million users worldwide. For those of you who choose not to create a Facebook account, remember we will continue to run letters to the editor in print — you can submit them by emailing newsroom@tricitynews.com (and please make sure to include your name, home address and phone number). So please continue to be a part of the discussion. Your comments are part of an important dialogue that enlivens and enriches civic life in our communities. • If you’re looking for more information on this change, we’ve attempted to answer most common questions on our Frequently Asked Questions page at tricitynews.com/ commentfaq. newsroom@tricitynews.com

Sarah St. John, a graduate of Gleneagle secondary school in Coquitlam and soon to be an SFU grad, was chosen B.C. Rhodes Scholar and will attend England’s famed Oxford University the next two years.

International exposure for local student By Sarah Payne THE TRI-CITY NEWS
When Sarah St. John graduates from SFU this spring, like many new university grads, she will pack a bag and head to Europe. Unlike almost all of those grads, however, St. John’s trip will be as much about changing the world as seeing it. The Gleneagle secondary school grad will spend the next two years at Oxford University after winning the coveted Rhodes Scholar title. “It’s pretty exciting,” she said. “Obviously, with a competitive scholarship like this, you hope but don’t necessarily expect to get it, so it’s a pretty big surprise. I’m excited and honoured and a little bit nervous.” There are 11 spots for Canadians for the annual Rhodes scholarship, with only one recipient coming from B.C. Rhodes is the fourth SFU student to win the award. St. John will graduate from SFU in the spring with a bachelor of science in health sciences and a certificate in sustainable community development. She plans to use the award, worth up to $100,000, to pursue a master’s degree in public policy at Oxford. The award is given to students who have demonstrated academic success and community involvement, as well as a commitment to making a difference on the global stage. They must also pursue non-academic interests such as sports, theatre or music. St. John has maintained a 4.1 GPA at SFU while balancing a busy volunteer life. She has been recognized with three Canadian Red Cross awards for her work in raising awareness about global issues, having organized the Humanity Strikes Back youth and serving as a youth delegate with the International Federation of the Red Cross at
the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Mexico in 2010. As a board member and later as the external chair of Sustainable SFU, St. John successfully lobbied for an undergrad fee to create an annual $100,000 contribution to the organization. Elizabeth Elle, an SFU associate professor of biology who was on the Rhodes selection committee for B.C., said that of the 18 applicants, St. John showed both a deep commitment to service as well as a strong academic standing. “She has done extremely well in both challenging science courses as well as a diverse array of social sciences courses,” Elle said. “Not many individuals can excel across the disciplines the way Sarah has.” St. John was already planning to continue with post-graduate studies and hoped to study abroad, but the Rhodes scholarship win goes beyond her biggest dreams. “To just be handed this amazing tool, to be able to learn and grow and be connected to this international community of students at Oxford, it’s a huge opportunity for me that will open a lot of doors,” St. John said. “And hopefully I’ll be able to have a positive impact on the world.” She’s still mulling over her Oxford program options and is considering a couple of interdisciplinary studies. When all the studying is done, St. John sees herself crafting policies for government or perhaps a think-tank back here in Canada. “I do enjoy international issues but... there’s a lot I can do here that will still have an international impact,” St. John said. “But that can all change. I hear plans can change when you go to Oxford and meet people.” spayne@tricitynews.com

Sclater spikes up Spartans
Fox athlete a top TWU v-ball recruit By Larry Pruner THE TRI-CITY NEWS
H
ow does a gifted basketball player at a high school with no volleyball program get a university scholarship to play the latter sport? Well, it certainly helps when you’re six-foot-six, can manoeuvre like a gazelle, and can jump out of the gym. Ryan Sclater, a co-captain and top point producer on the heralded Terry Fox Ravens AAA senior boys hoop squad, signed a letter of intent to play volleyball next fall with Langley’s Trinity Western Spartans, it was announced Friday. The 17-year-old Sclater –– a member of Team BC the last two years who captained the unit to the gold medal at the 2011 Western Elite Championship –– will join fellow Fraser Valley Volleyball Club-mates Tyler Heppell and Scott Plocktis on the Spartans. The three are considered to be among the top five prep recruits in the province this year. “These three mark the best all-B.C. recruiting class our program has ever seen,” raved Spartans head coach Ben Josephson. “We’ve had many great classes over the years but this is the first year in which we have 100 per cent home-grown talent coming in. The future looks very bright.” Josephson is elated to have collared the talented Sclater, who is also a member of the Centre of Excellence, a Volleyball Canada initiative that provides high-performance training. “Ryan brings a very unique skill set to us,” Josephson said. “He is very tall and long but possesses great athleticism. He is a big jumper and has great speed and agility, which will aid him in being a great passer. “Ryan also has a great understanding of team and what it takes to be a teammate. These are virtues we hold with the highest esteem.” Sclater boasts a 96 per cent high school average and is looking forward to joining the Spartans for one main reason –– to win. “I’m attending TWU because I want to be on the best team in the country... and be with an awesome group of guys for the next four or five years,” said Sclater, who’s also a soccer standout at Fox and plans to study sciences at TWU. “And it’s halfan-hour away from my house. What more could I want?”
SFU’S BASSO TOP ALL-AMERICAN
Coquitlam’s Carlo Basso of the Simon Fraser Clan university men’s soccer squad was named to the 2011 NCAA Div. 2 All-American first team, it was announced Friday. SFU’s Matt Besuschko of Port Moody was chosen a third team All-American. “It feels great to cap off a successful season with this honour,” said Basso, who was the Clan’s top striker during its first-ever undefeated season last campaign.

First-place Kodiaks clip Black Cats THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Port Moody Black Panthers out-shot the best the Harold Brittain Conference has to offer Wednesday. They darn near outscored them, too. The Cats and Kodiaks were knotted 2-2 midway through the game before Aldergrove scored three of the game’s final four goals to prevail 5-3 in a Pacific International Jr. ‘B’ hockey league game at Aldergrove Community Arena. “Either team could have won,” said Black Panthers general manager Ron Luniw, whose squad had its two-game win streak snapped. “We didn’t capitalize enough when we should have and it came back to bite us a bit in the end.” The result left the Cats third in the fiveteam conference at 9-144-1 while the Kodiaks jumped to 19-6-1-1 and six points up on the second-place Abbotsford Pilots. Luniw said the game proved the Cats have turned things around since last week’s coaching change that brought in James Strang in place of out-going bench boss Craig Sherbaty. “A r e w e g e t t i n g
where we want to go? I think so,” Luniw said. “Aldergrove’s a good hockey club, no question, and we were right there with them. It was a high-end game... lots of tempo, end-to-end.” The Kodiaks’ Jordan Pughe and PoMo’s Cam P a t t e r s o n sw a p p e d first-period goals, and Aldergrove’s Brandon Potomak and the Cats’ Trevor Kang did likewise 10 seconds apart early in the second. Rober t Jang g ave the Kodiaks a 3-2 lead going into the third and Potomak bagged his second marker of the game four minutes into the third to his the hosts a two-goal cushion. Martin Campbell struck on a Cats’ powerplay fewer than two minutes later to make it a 4-3 game, before Daniel Higgs boosted the Kodiaks’ margin to 5-3 at the 10-minute mark to eventually close out the scoring. The Cats out-shot the Kodiaks 45-43, with Mark Menicucci blocking 38 shots in the PoMo cage. Patterson also had two assists to give him a three-point night. The team voluntarily collected clothing, toys and canned goods for a Coquitlam-area family instead of exchanging gifts at its recent Christmas party. ”The team has been learning all season on the field but [took] time out to... support a good cause and appreciate the true meaning of Christmas,” said Shakhtar head coach Jeff Slark.
