Lighting up the festive season he hustle and bustle of the holiday season is here along with the temptation to shop until you drop. But Tri-City families should spend time together and, fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that. Today (Sunday), for example, the trees next to Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park will be lit with 30,000 holiday lights for the Envision Financial Light the Lake Festival, an annual community event that also benefits the bursary program for students in need in at

GO PLAY OUTSIDE TODAY Douglas College’s Health Sciences program. This year, vendors from the Coquitlam Farmers Market will be selling their wares while Coquitlam Sunrise Rotary is sponsoring balloon sculpting and face painting; Evergreen Cultural Centre will show children how to do a puppet craft; and the Sorority Sisters are offering a lantern craft. Food vendors include Mr. Mikes and the Coquitlam Firefighters barbecue, and

there will be cookies, milled apple juice, coffee and hot chocolate provided by Thrifty Foods and Starbucks. On stage between 3 and 6 p.m. will be Newport Brass, Stage 43, Theatrix, Cooper Studios and the Galactic Entrainment Light Show. Santa will be turning on the lights at approximately 4:45 p.m. but there will be plenty of time to enjoy the lights because they will be on for a month. The event runs from 3-7 p.m. There’s more happening for the Yuletide season — and plenty of opportunities to help those in need. For details, see page 2.

Shopping for Musical Ideas at Christmas? By Paul Hickey LONG & MCQUADE MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

There is an old, semi-legendary story that an eight year old Elvis Presley got a guitar for Christmas instead of the bicycle that he really wanted. The rest, they say, was history. When considering a gift of a musical instrument this year, here are some tips: Has the person shown an interest or an aptitude in a particular instrument? Often even a very young child will show an affinity to a particular instrument. Sometimes there is no apparent relationship between this instrument and a family group. I’ve often heard from parents: “We’ve had no one in our family who has played the violin, but (he/she) won’t stop talking about it! Often young kids will show amazing rhythm abilities, drumming with their fingers on any surface. Even at ages of three and four it is not uncommon for children to be seeking out fundamentals of music. Does the child mimic singers from TV and radio? That’s usually a good hint they could be musically apt. The standard instrument for a musical education used to be the old family upright piano in the corner. Well, things have changed. Digital pianos, keyboard controllers for computer software, and a myriad of electronic musical devices can now act as a gateway to a lifetime of music. Even the acoustic drum set with its booming bass and crazy cymbals now has an update for the digital age – electronic drums are providing an answer for quiet rehearsals, condo-living, and easy recording. Parents love the fact they can turn them down! Recently the TV show “Glee has broken all records for any musical show. Glee cast members take on all the classics and offer up new and fresh arrangements. Most of the Glee catalogue is available at L&M from Publisher

Hal Leonard. In fact, mostly any music printed is available at L&M. And that means all styles: Jazz, Classical, Folk, Celtic, World and so on. For the adult beginner, taking on music can be a challenge. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard: “Y’know, I’ve always wanted to play music but I was always too busy with my family/job/etc.â€? Adult beginners want to know the best route to start an education in music. For most, getting into a lesson plan with a qualified teacher is the best route. However, today there are other avenues that adult beginners can take when they want to get started. Just renting an instrument and getting a good instructional book or video is a good way to get going. Cost vs. Investment? Another huge question I get asked is: “What is the start-up cost of all this and when does it end?â€? Many parents want to know if they are getting good quality when selecting an instrument and the right goods or services to help the person in question, in the best way possible. For the casual observer of music, walking into a music store can be a minefield of bad decisions, especially when buying for enthusiastic beginners. Relax, most people in music stores were beginners themselves. They realize that there is a correct approach to all of this. At Long & McQuade, our company philosophy is to match the right products and services to the people’s needs. That’s also why a good music store provides a huge range of goods and services for the beginner and the professional. If you can’t really zero in on what it is your music lover wants‌ think about Gift Certificates! They come in any denomination, and they work for purchases, rentals, or lessons. They don’t have an expiry date (great for buying guitar strings in the summer or

fall) and musicians and neomusicians really love them. To my knowledge L&M Gift Certificates haven’t been mentioned at the Grammys, but every musician remembers the person who helped them out in the early years! Even Mozart had a “benefactorâ€?! Sure, there are costs associated with music, but the benefits, I believe, outweigh those costs. Just the feeling of accomplishment of playing a song is worth the investment for many beginners. Santa’s little helpers

Pro One Uniforms collects food for the hungry Pro One Uniforms – a medical fashion-wear store in Coquitlam – is collecting canned fruit donations for the food bank this December. The initiative began when owner Raeleen Tillotson spent time volunteering to feed the homeless years ago and noticed the lack of fruit in their diets. This year will mark the seventh year of the fundraiser. Easy open canned items are handed out personally by Raleen’s husband, with the remaining cans going to the local food bank. Customers who bring in a can will also receive $10 off shoes and when bringing in a second item receive a sale rack item for half off. Donations will be collected on Saturday December 11th as well as December 18th. Visit any of Pro One’s store locations to donate or go to www.prooneuniforms. com for more information.

Make the Holidays Harmonious for Pets, Too Celebrants all over may look forward to the holidays for the hustle and bustle they bring, but the same sentiments may not be expressed by pets ... if they could talk, that is. Pets that aren’t used to a lot of foot traffic in a home or loud events could become anxious when holiday guests arrive and the fun ensues. Further stress could be added by lack of attention on the part of pet owners and the changes of the home environment through the addition of decorations and a Christmas tree. Christmas and New Years also present a host of hazards to pets. It’s important to be aware of these dangers to keep pets safe. Keep these pointers in mind: • Don’t use poisonous plants in your holiday decor. Holly, ivy, mistletoe, and poinsettias can be deadly if consumed by most animals. Go with faux plants instead

if you desire the look. • Keep your pets on a steady diet and resist the urge to feed them leftovers from holiday dinner. Abrupt changes in your dog or cat’s diet can cause stomach distress. • Set aside a quiet space your pets can retreat to when there’s just too much commotion in another area of the house. However, putting a dog in the backyard if it is extremely cold is simply off limits. A dark bedroom away from the activity is best. • Cats love to climb and may take to your Christmas tree. Safeguard against the tree tipping over by securing it with a piece of

fishing line anchored into the ceiling or a wall. Also, don’t put lit candles or breakables on areas where cats like to pounce. • Involve pets in the festivities by buying a special treat that they can enjoy for good behaviour during the holidays. A new chew or chase toy is a nice idea. • If you will be travelling during the holidays, make sure your pets are adequately secured in the car and not allowed to roam freely. Use a travel crate or a special seat belt to keep the animals in place. With some planning and care, you can ensure your pets will be comfortable and content during the holiday season.
