It doesn’t feel like Christmas when your kids are hungry. F

or many of us, the holiday season is filled with cheer. It’s a chance to spend time with family and friends and to enjoy life. And that’s a wonderful thing. Unfortunately for many in our community, there are daily challenges to face; including getting enough to eat. In the current economic times, there are more and more people who can’t make ends meet. They are the person who sits on the bus beside you each morning or the one who smiles and holds the door open for you as you enter a building. They are the man on the street holding a sign that says: “looking for work” or the woman in the local park whose child plays with yours on the swing. They are our friends and neighbours. They are our community. In these tough economic times, more people to turn to the food bank. The SHARE Food Bank needs your support more than ever. Right now, they are providing approximately 1000 families with food relief every two weeks. An incredible 45% of recipients are children. Even with the generosity of the community, the SHARE Food Bank can’t keep up with the growing demand.

The current demand is overwhelming and the SHARE Food Bank needs your help more than ever. No child should ever go hungry. At this festive time of year, we are asking you to think of others in our community. Every donation matters—from the small to the large. Please open your hearts—and your wallets—and help the SHARE Food Bank to help those in need. It may be the best present you’ve ever given.

Let’s make it feel like Christmas for everyone. Call now 604.540.9161 with your donation.

Decorating your home this Holiday season From the experts at Art Knapp Plantland and Florist Tis the Season to decorate our homes with the splendour of Christmas and all that it means for our families. As always the traditional Christmas is very much in fashion but this year also look for decorations to be full of brilliance and grandeur. The trend this year will be for voluminous balls of all shapes and sizes, imaginatively designed animals such as moose, reindeer, penguins, and this year’s must – owls of all shapes and sizes, plus the traditional angels along with fairytale figures. Tinsel is a thing of the past – instead you will see artificial snow branches take over for this year. The colour trends for this season are elegant and classy with rich hues of brown and cream, black, white and silver, crystal and glass, grey and platinum. Also look for decorations in rich bronze tones, rich wine hues, shining ruby, as well as traditional gold and silver and of course red and green. These colours will appear in ornaments, garlands, and tableware. Set your table with a glamorous style with the same rich colours that may adorn your tree and garland. A great addition is rich material such as velvet, leather, feathers or wooden beads. A stylish and stunning table runner is a must for your table along with either pillar candles or tea lights in an accenting colour. Warm candlelight, whether scented or see next page A7

not, is always a symbol of romance and contemplation. Work a brightly lit garland down the centre of your table, add some accent balls and holiday picks and your guests will be in awe. As always the tree is the focal point of our Christmas décor whether artificial or natural, it should be stunning. Always try to use an assortment of shapes and sizes with your ornaments. Finish off your tree with fabulous artificial flowers and other branches, use these to fill the empty spaces. Ribbon is a must, have it worked through the tree staying away from any symmetry or straight lines – keep it moving in and out, up and down the branches. At Art Knapps we offer a full range of artificial trees from 2 inches to 12 inches in slim, regular and even upside down sizes. Most of our trees, wreaths and garlands are lit using LED lights which make them very energy efficient and will last much longer. We offer LED lights in many sizes and shapes for decorating your fresh cut tree or garland as well. The perfect accessory for these lights is our 3 function timer so you don’t have to go around unplugging at the end of the night! A Christmas tree lit with LED from within the branches is a brilliant sight, combined with one of the latest ornament trends, and your tree will be in on the hottest styles. Lastly, take your holiday style outside by inserting evergreen boughs of pine, cedar, boxwood and holly into your empty planters and pots. Then add mini

lights along with the weatherproof berries and branches that are available. Visit our busy elves at Art Knapp Plantland and Florist and let us help you get started with your holiday decorating. Art Knapp is located at 1300 Dominion Avenue, Port Coquitlam

Dreaming of a White Christmas? Consider a ‘Green’ One Instead Christmas is a holiday full of joy and celebration. It can also be a time of consumption and stress on the environment. However, holiday shoppers and celebrants can easily reduce their carbon footprint this holiday season. During a season in which more is often more, it can be a challenge to cut back in an effort to protect the planet. But scaling back gifts, food consumption and travel can be effective ways to go green this holiday season. • Buy fewer gifts. Christmas gifts show others how much they are cared about. Some gifts are given out of necessity. Others are more of a sentimental statement. It’s easy to express how much you care without overdoing it. Set a limit on the number of gifts each recipient gets.

• Organize a “Secret Santa.” An easy way to cut down on gifts purchased is to organize a Secret Santa or holiday grab bag. This means that each participating person only has to purchase one gift. • Be smart about wrapping. Chances are there are plenty of items around the house that can be recycled into gift wrapping for presents. Foil, newspaper, comics, magazines, and even brown mailing paper are all good ideas. For those interested in really going green, skip the wrapping all together. • It’s okay to make gifts. Handmade gifts are thoughtful and can be cherished for years. Individuals who know how to knit or crochet can handcraft scarves or hats. Make a photo album with scrapbooking supplies. Individuals who are

handy in the kitchen may want to give baked goods. • Choose battery-free gifts. Discarded batteries are a plague on the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 40 percent of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. If batteries can’t be avoided, choose ones that can be recharged. • Use LED holiday lights. Keeping lights on for hours on end certainly uses a lot of electricity. Limit the drain on energy by selecting lights that have the least impact. LEDs use less power and last longer than traditional bulbs. When possible, consider the use of solar-powered holiday lights. Plus, don’t leave the lights on when no one is home or the household has gone to sleep. • Decorate a live tree.

Christmas tree farms are in the business of regularly planting and harvesting evergreen trees. That makes live trees a renewable resource instead of plastic trees made from petroleum. What’s more, after the season Christmas trees can be turned into mulch. • Send recycled cards or e-cards. Choose materials around the house that can be turned into Christmas cards for those that you do send. Also, recycle last year’s cards into tags for gifts. • Recycle leftover materials. Chances are large gifts will have enough wrapping paper remaining to wrap other gifts next year. Avoid metallic paper, which is more difficult to recycle. Be sure to break down all cardboard and paper so that it can be put out for recycling.

Reducing the use of gift wrapping or recycling previously used paper are green ways to celebrate the holiday.

Sunny Farm Market Donate a toy, get a free appetizer! Mr. Mikes Steakhouse is currently hosting its third annual toy drive benefiting Share Community and Family Services. The initiative began with the Dawson Creek Mr Mikes location and has been carried throughout many of their restaurants. “Many places do food drives, and we have participated in the Christmas in July food drive supporting Share,” says Coquitlam restaurant manager, Kyle O’Genski. “But the opportunity to help children in our community was a cause that our staff wanted to support.” Last year’s fundraiser brought in 120 toys, and this year is looking even stronger. Mr Mikes staff began promoting the event back in November and officially launched the initiative on November 29th. During the launch party, staff donated their tips to the cause along with many toys that have already been donated. “We wanted to be different and as a company we love to help kids any way we can,” says O’Gennski. “We are just thrilled to see the support that pours in, helping children in our community wake up to a Christmas they deserve.” Mr Mikes is accepting unwrapped new toys, $10 in value (min.). The toy

drive will continue until Christmas Eve, however a load of toys will be delivered to Share the week of Christmas to be handed out to families. Mr. Mikes Steakhouse is located at 2991 Lougheed Highway, Coquitlam

Fabulous Jewelry at Spinola Bay By Doris Hunter OWNER, SPINOLA BAY

No matter what time of year, especially at Christmas time, women love to give and receive jewelry. Spinola Bay carries several lines, but we are most proud to carry what we believe to be the top three lines in Canada at this time – Pandora, Thomas Sabo and Pyrrha jewelry. Each designer offers a wide variety of charm bracelets and necklaces that are hot on the Tri-City market for the holiday season. The designers of Pyrrha Jewelry are handcrafting their pieces right here in Vancouver with authentic 19th century wax seals. This craftsmanship was inspired by the designer’s desire to give the fragile wax seals new life and permanence. Pandora’s mission is to offer women across the world a universe of modern, high quality, hand-finished and genuine jewelry products at affordable prices, thereby inspiring women to express their individuality. They believe all women have their individual stories to tell – a personal collection of special moments that makes them who they are. That is why we celebrate these moments. Thomas Sabo loves fashion and his jewelry is simply inspired by every day life. The designers at Thomas Sabo believe jewelry is a way of playing with personality and expressing yourself. This passion for life is admirably reflected in their collection. All three lines have people lining up to see the new collections every season, and this holiday is no different. Clients are happy to

can feel confident that their “special someone” will be just as happy receiving their gift as they were purchasing it. Spinola Bay is located at 1410 Parkway Boulevard, Coquitlam

THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Don’t Let Christmas Dinner Be a Budget-Buster Many people worry about the expenses of the holidays. Individuals who are already pinching pennies and putting as much toward gifts as possible may want to keep holiday entertaining costs low. It’s possible to do so without sacrificing quality. Christmas dinner is something families look forward to each year. Some enjoy a roasted turkey; others turn to cultural foods. Others may eat a big meal both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The hosts and hostesses who serve Christmas dinner often open their homes up to a number of guests to enjoy the meal. It’s not uncommon to find 10 to 12 friends or family members gathered around the dining table -- and feeding all those people can get expensive. One can expect to spend a hundred dollars or more on holiday foods depending on the menu items chosen; a large turkey alone can cost $25. If cocktails are part of the holiday equation, premium alcohol can run $20 to $30 per bottle. If finances are tight, a big Christmas dinner can certainly put a strain on the budget. To cut costs, consider these frugal tips. • Shop the sales. Plan the menu in advance and comparison shop the non-perishable items. Stock up on the foods needed that can be stored in the pantry until preparation time. The closer a person shops to Christmas, the higher the prices on certain items may be. • Choose lower-priced foods. Who says filet mignon has to be served on Christmas? As long as the food is tasty, guests will enjoy it. Consider menu items that can be bought in bulk (less expensive) and turned into

delicious meals. A platter of chicken with lemon-butter sauce could win rave reviews over the tired turkey anyway. • Don’t overdo it. Party hosts often overbuy food thinking there will not be enough. After crackers and cheese, salad, appetizers, and some other courses, guests may be stuffed to the gills and only pick at the main meal. Scale back the courses and focus on one or two things. • Fill guests up with vegetables. Starches, such as potatoes and rice, and many vegetables are inexpensive and filling. Serve a higher ratio of these foods to meats and poultry. • Have a holiday pot luck. Hosts can ask guests to bring one food item with them to lessen the financial burden. Friends and family will be more than happy to pitch in. • Consider store brands. Many store brand foods are equal in taste and quality to the brand name items ... but at lower costs. This is because store brands are not advertised and don’t have to pay for publicity. This can help budget-conscious shoppers save a little at the check-out. • Avoid pre-made foods. Convenience foods, like frozen appetizers or dips, often cost more per serving than if they are made at home from scratch. Scratch-cooking takes a little more time, but it is often more economical. • Skip the meal, altogether. If conversation and mingling are more the speed of the gathering, host a cocktail party instead. Serve finger foods and one or two signature drinks. Less time around the table means more moments for merrymaking anyway.
