For many people, the Christmas season is a time for turkey, presents and family gettogethers. But in the Tri-Cities, there is a group of dedicated residents who have added another annual tradition to their holiday season: bird counting. Each year, members of the Burke Mountain Naturalists rally volunteers for the Coquitlam Christmas Bird Count, a data-collecting initiative that allows environmentalists to track changes in the bird population. And after 18 years of counting in the Tri-Cities, birders like BMN past-president Victoria Otton are starting to see some informative trends. “Birds move around and, at this particular time, with climate change, we see birds extending their range,” she said. “The Christmas count has been really useful for monitoring trends.” While more than 50 volunteers are expected to turn up in the Tri-Cities, they will be participating along with birders from across North America as part of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. The data is collected and sent to the National Audubon Society, which has been organizing the annual count in some parts of the continent for more than 100 years. In the 1800s people engaged in what was known as the Christmas side hunt, where teams of people would go out into the woods and kill as many birds as possible, according to the Audubon history. The group that came back with the largest amount of feathers was declared the winner.

But at the turn of the century, conservation groups became increasingly concerned with declining bird populations and, on Christmas day in 1900, Frank Chapman, an ornithologist, proposed a new holiday tradition that involved counting the birds instead of shooting them. The Christmas bird count was born and has since grown to cover most of North America.
While many experienced birders take part in the Tri-City Christmas count, Otton said that new volunteers are always welcome. Novices are usually relied upon to simply spot birds while more experienced birders identify the species. The volunteers are broken up into groups covering birdwatching hot spots such as Colony Farm in Coquitlam, Port Moody’s Shoreline Trail
and other parts of the Tri-Cities. Those who are interested in participating in the Jan. 2 event are asked to email John Reynolds at burkemtnnats@gmail.com. A mother and two young boys are recovering after a dramatic rescue from a burning townhouse unit on Decaire Street on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters believe candles may have
ignited the blaze, which quickly spread smoke and flames throughout the home shortly after 2 p.m. After the mother gathered the children, she attempted to escape the burning building out the front door but thick smoke trapped the family inside. She and the two young boys retreated to a bedroom upstairs, where she wet a towel, placed it under the door and phoned 911 to update emergency officials on her location. “That really assisted our first-in officer with the decision-making process,” said Coquitlam Fire/Rescue Chief Tony
Delmonico. “I can’t say enough about the actions of the mother. She is one of the most composed people I have ever ran into in 30 years of firefighting.” Rescue crews were able to use high powered fans to create a path in the smoke that enabled the family to exit the home. Delmonico credited smoke detectors and the quick-thinking actions of the mother for getting the family out safely. All three people were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for observation and later released. The entire townhouse complex was evac-
uated for several hours as crews worked to contain the fire and smoke from the unit. Delmonico estimates that more than $50,000 in damage was done to the townhouse and a neighbouring unit. The family living in the home where the fire occurred did not have insurance but a trust fund has been set up to help the family recover some of its losses. A for mer Port Coquitlam city employee, who alle ges she was discriminated against when the city ended her full-time employment, has had her Human Rights Tribunal complaint dismissed. The woman told the tribunal she was terminated in December 2009 because she suffered from depression, which caused her to miss work. In her complaint, she alleged the city did nothing to accommodate her mental illness and that she was coerced by her union into agreeing to a release date and grievance settlement. The city said the woman’s termination had nothing to do with her mental illness and she was actually terminated in July 2009 for “longstanding attendance concerns and failure to participate in an independent examination.” A treatment plan was offered to the woman, who had worked in the parks and recreation department since 1987, but the city said she did not fully participate.

City preps for Place expansion

The city of Coquitlam has snapped up two properties west of Place Maillardville for the future expansion of the community centre in the historically French-Canadian enclave. The city spent $1.2 million to buy two homes at 1134 and 1136 Cartier Ave.; the former was vacant, the latter is a rental. The Place Maillardville Society, which runs the centre in Laval Square, has also asked the city to buy three more properties on Begin Street that back onto 1134 Cartier Ave. but staff are not in negotiations to acquire those lands, said Maurice Gravelle, Coquitlam’s general manager of strategic initiatives. Funds for the Cartier Avenue properties were taken from the city’s land sale reserve account, which currently stands at $4 million, he said. No casino revenues were used in the purchase, as has been the case with other capital projects. Gravelle said the multi-million dollar redevelopment of Place Maillardville will be put on hold next year, although it is anticipated the preferred option will be discussed as part of the 2012 budget. Earlier this month, city council approved an additional $30,200 for the society’s budget to fund a youth co-ordinator position after representatives had said the facility has run at a loss for two years. For several years, Maillardville community and business leaders have called for the redevelopment of the aging centre, which provides recreational and language programs for all ages. And since 2002, the society has received more than $150,000 in casino grants from the city for capital and operational needs. The future expansion plans form part of the overall revitalization of Maillardville. Last month, the city offered commercial property owners in Maillardville a “tax holiday” if they build or renovate their businesses. The exemption — available to commercial property owners along Brunette Avenue, from Marmont Street to Blue Mountain Street and Lougheed Highway — applies only to new construction or renovations over $100,000. jwarren@tricitynews.com

The Homes for Good Society is unlikely to achieve its goal of housing 40 individuals before the end of 2010 but Mayor Greg Moore believes the organization is on track to begin housing people in the new year. Moore, who launched the initiative in 2009, is hoping to use the housing-first model, which seeks to place homeless people in market-based housing. A person on welfare would see the housing portion of their cheque topped up through private contributions, a system that has worked in places such as Toronto and New York. In PoCo, however, the initiative has hit several road blocks since it was launched, although Moore believes the organization is ready
to house its first person in the early part of 2011. “I never like to give a date,� Moore s a i d , “ bu t I would think in the first couple months of the GREG MOORE new year.� After the first person is housed, he added that it is likely more people will enter the program quickly. Homes for Good hopes to work with the New View Society, which already finds housing placements for people suffering from mental illness. New View’s relationship with landlords and property owners will be integral to the success of the Homes for Good program, Moore said. “New View houses about 200 people a month in our community,� he said. “They have excellent relationships with landlords and they don’t see much of a problem being able to house our homeless residents.� The two societies are working
on a memorandum of understanding that would outline how the organizations will work together to house the homeless. One of the major hold-ups to the program, Moore said, was the fact that welfare regulations stipulate a person who receives the monthly assistance cannot receive an outside taxable benefit. The extra income the society hopes to raise through private contributions would actually make some recipients ineligible for welfare and some of the programs that come with it. But the society was able to work with Housing Minister Rich Coleman to remove some of the impediments involved with giving a welfare recipient a contribution to their rent payment. Moore said now that some of the bureaucratic hurdles are out of the way, the society can focus on fundraising. An executive director has been hired and a process is being developed for identifying those who would qualify for Homes for Good assistance. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

he list of winter festivals is long; people of many faiths, and secular humanists, too, seem to share a desire to celebrate light during the darkest days of winter. In North America, the Christmas season is characterized by gift giving, the lighting of lights and candles and feasting. But those traditions can be found in other religious holidays as well, such as Kwanzaa, an African-American holiday that takes place at about the same time, and the Jewish Hanukkah, which this year took place in early December. The Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which took place in November this year, is a time to give to neighbours and the poor, and shares many characteristics common to Christmas and celebrated by Christians. Diwali is another festival of light, celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs, and although it took place in October, is also marked by celebrations and feasting. It’s heartening to know that light is at the heart of so many festivals and that people of many faiths and cultures share a lot in common. Merry Christmas.

A merry Christmas to all, despite ye judgment AS I SEE IT Andrew Holota

here’s a Biblical phrase that goes: Judge not, that ye be not judged. Yet, we all do a lot of it. The criteria are infinite. Height, weight, breadth of hips, depth of chest, length of leg, heft of biceps, colour of skin, jut of nose and point of gaze. What was said and what was forgotten. What was done and what was not. What is common and what is different. And through this complex and often arbitrary process, we rank our fellow man — good, bad and everywhere in between. Much of it is guided and weighted by values and prejudices, faiths and fears, aspirations and expectations. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column poking fun at the commercialization of Christmas carols (“Confessions of a Christmas carol grinch,” The Tri-City News,
Dec. 10). Some of the reader response was decidedly judgmental, particularly from folks who reasoned that if I railed against being inundated by Christmas carols in shopping malls, grocery stores and every other public place, then it obviously followed I was against Christmas and Christmas trees, and concerts, and joy and, if you can imagine, against Christianity itself. One emailer labelled me a God-hater. Another said I should “get lost.” And yet another maintained I had no idea of the true meaning of Christmas. No appreciation for Christmas? I happen to like Christmas, actually. Let me describe how it has unfolded in our small family for many years and then you can judge whether all those condemnations were well placed: Before Christmas, we write our cheques to our favourite charities, which support the homeless and hungry. We put our bills in the Sally Ann kettles and the firefighters’ boots. We gather our contributions for various

drives, at workplace and school. For weeks ahead, I’ve been crafting handmade gifts, in wood and shell and painted art, because I think that often the most cherished gifts are the ones that come from your hands and heart. We decorate our house with boughs of fresh-cut cedar and fir and holly, and bring out family heirlooms that have been brought from Europe, such as carvings and handcrafted ornaments. My mother makes German cookies and cakes. I cook a special Christmas Eve dinner and we raise a toast to the two fathers who are no longer with us, and are missed even more at this time of year. It is a time of much happiness, and deep sadness. And then, as my wife’s family tradition dictates, the Christmas story is read from the Bible. For many years, it was she who read the passages in German. Now, it is my daughter who reads in English the story of how the Christ child came into the world.
On Christmas morning, we gather by the real Christmas tree, open presents, share hugs and feel incredibly fortunate to be where we are, enjoying what we have, because we know from personal and family experience what it is like to have far less, and in places that know no peace. Then we spend the day together, talking and cooking and just being together, eventually sitting down to a traditional roast goose. And, yes, through all of that, there is some Christmas music because it’s the right time and place. So that, dear defenders of sacred cows — or carols, as the case may be — is the meaning of my meaningless Christmas. May I offer this, in the true spirit of the season, whether you be Christian or Muslim or Sikh or Buddhist, or none of the above: Goodwill among all. Merry Christmas. This column, the fifth thanks to the loyalty of our readers and The Tri-City News’ editor and publisher, is where we reveal to you that we’re not always jousting with sharp observations and sparring with blunt metaphors. In fact, we are sometimes in complete agreement. Here, then, are some of the issues from the past year upon which we were in accord.

MARY WOO SIMS: News earlier in the year that Google pulled back some of its operations in China due to that country’s restrictive censorship of information has renewed my faith in multinationals. Risking a market that can bring a company millions if not billions of dollars in profits is courageous action.
MARY WOO: It is tragic when a mother feels her only option is to abandon her baby. I just can’t imagine the conditions that would lead to such a decision on the part of a mother. St. Paul’s Hospital has come up with a program that is, as my colleague said, “life-affirming� and “non-threatening.� The child now has a chance at life and I hope the mother finds peace one day with her decision. Speaking of peace, after months of rancour, as evidenced in letters to the editor about our four-legged friends and whether and where there should be on- or off-leash parks, it seems that we’ve reached some rapprochement. My colleague and I both agree that we should let sleeping dogs lay. Let dog owners and non-dog owners enjoy parks together.
TERRY O’NEILL: My colleague is right on the mark. As a career writer, I am especially opposed to censorship of information of the sort practised in China. If companies such as Google, whose unofficial slogan is “Don’t be evil,� don’t have the integrity to stand up for what’s right, China will be under little pressure to change its oppressive (dare we say, “evil�) ways. But we don’t have to look half a world away to find important human-rights issues. Earlier this year, controversy arose over the first use of the Angel’s Cradle program at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. The program is designed to give mothers the life-affirming but nonthreatening option of leaving an unwanted baby anonymously at a designated place rather than “throwing it away� in a dumpster. All things
TERRY: The hot topic of last spring — whether to extend off-leash hours at Mundy Park — cooled down after last spring’s referendum and continues to be on the backburner. A portion of the credit for this must surely go to Coquitlam council, which continues to make progress on plans to establish more enclosed off-leash areas in key spots around the city. As the song says, “Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly.� Likewise, “Dogs gotta run,� and I agree with my colleague that this is the best strategy to allow them to do so. And speaking of strategies, we continue to agree on several aspects of the ever-delayed Evergreen (Nevergreen? Evergroan?) Line. After agreeing previously on our preference for a route through Port Moody, we agreed this year the TransLink budget shortfall should not
be funded by increased property taxes, and we were also in complete accord on the level of our frustration over the interminably long wait for construction to begin. Let’s get this thing rolling. MARY WOO: Absolutely. The Evergreen Line is far overdue and a great Christmas present would be funding approval and the ceremonial shovel in the ground. As witnessed by the speed and efficiency with which the Canada Line was built, when government puts its mind to something it gets done. Which brings me to season’s greetings to my colleague opposite, the wonderful folks at The Tri-City News and you, the readers. Whether you and your family celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanzaa, or if you celebrate nothing in particular at this time of year, it is always the right time to give thanks for the love of family and friends. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season. TERRY: We’ve disagreed on much during the five years we have engaged in our little wars of words but we’ve also found common ground on a satisfyingly large number of subjects, not the least important of which is an annual desire for our readers to embrace all the good that this time of the year has to offer. On the first Thursday of each month, a crack team of volunteers descends upon Port Coquitlam’s Kinsmen hall to serve dinner and entertainment for as many as 80 local women in need. It’s a mature sacrifice to make — especially given the age of the volunteers, all students at Anmore elementary school. But Jennifer Whiffin’s Grade 4/5 class seems to crave the connection they developed with the women and with the wider community outside of their peer group, she said. “I had one boy say he felt they were like a little crack team of volunteers and they loved working together, and part of it was very social for them. They love keeping busy,� Whiffin said. “It was this real connection with real people that appreciated what they had to bring.� H o s t e d by t h e S o r o p t i m i s t International of the Tri-Cities, the women’s dinner brings in clients from the Share food bank and Port Coquitlam’s Glory House as well as women who have recently immigrated, said local Soroptimist member Darlene McCann. Apart from serving dinner and helping with the clean-up afterward, Ms. Whiffin’s class has also raised $850 in bake sales and door-to-door

That money was used to buy gift bags of socks, gloves, soaps, lotions, ornaments and snacks that were given to the women at the December dinner. “It’s tough to find just the right thing to kind of bring the issues around social responsibility alive to the students without sort of forcing it down their throats,� Whiffin said. “I’m hoping what this will do is be a springboard for them to seek out volunteering opportunities for themselves as they get older and not feel cynical about these things.� The class began its Soroptimist dinner partnership in January and Whiffin said she plans to make it part of her teaching curriculum indefinitely. tcoyne@tricitynews.com

he King’s Speech, a new British film starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter, has not only generated Oscar buzz for its lead actor, it has local speech therapists and their students talking. And they have nothing but praise for the film, which deals with the complex and often misunderstood phenomenon of stuttering. Semyonova, an accomplished pianist and singer, was born in Kazakhstan and grew up speaking German, Russian and English fluently but for a stutter that pervaded all three. “People get really awkward and they don’t take you seriously, they just focus a lot on [the stutter],” Semyonova said. “And the movie was so helpful because his character was so important that even though his stutter was really, really bad, you had to look past what he was stuttering about and into the context of what he was saying because it was so important.” Still only partially understood by neurologists and speech therapists, stuttering seems to have a hereditary link among families, Duke said, and is most likely to develop in

She added that it’s important for people to know that speech therapy has come a long way since the war-time era of the film, and that stuttering is highly treatable with modern exercises. One exercise that Semyonova uses comes naturally from her musical background.
“It’s called connected speech,” she said, “and it’s, to me, the whole theory behind that when a person sings, they don’t stutter. When you sing, it uses a different part of the brain and when you’re connecting all of your syllables and you’re not having a lot of breaks, and the breaks you do have are planned, it ends up using that different part of the brain
that’s used for singing and you end up being fluid and not stuttering.” The King’s Speech recently won the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award and its star, Firth, is widely seen as a frontrunner to win the best actor Oscar for his performance. tcoyne@tricitynews.com
In January: Substance abuse ed. and outdoor fun The Share Alcohol and Drug Program is hosting a free education series starting next month on alcohol and drug addiction. The program is open to anyone and offers information for those who have an alcohol or drug problem, or for those concerned about their use. It aims to help those people affected by others’ use to understand addicts and addictive behaviour. The meeting format consists of a video, followed by a brief presentation and open discussion. Topics vary from week to week, as outlined below: • Jan. 12: Use, misuse, abuse — how people become addicted. • Jan. 19: Medical aspects and effects of alcohol and drug abuse. What happens to the body and mind under the influence. • Jan. 26: Alcohol — How dependence develops; controlled using.
• Feb. 2: Cocaine and crystal meth — the struggle to recover, and what long-term recovery looks like. • Feb. 9: Relapse prevention — discussion on the psychological, emotional and physical aspects of relapsing and what can be done. • Feb. 16: Stress — learning how to cope with little and big problems without using. • Feb. 23: Anger — understanding your anger and learning how to manage it more effectively. • March 2: Trauma — How substance misuse often occurs with people who have experienced childhood abuse. How these experiences may cause relapses or continued misuse. • March 9: Mental Illness, Depression and Addiction. Many people have a substance problem and are coping with mental issues. Understanding the links between the two is-
sues will be tonight’s goal. • March 16: Drinking, drugs and driving — How the new laws will affect you. You will learn about blood alcohol levels and how drugs impair judgment. • March 23: Substance affected: How others misuse or abuse of alcohol and drugs affects us. How to help others. • March 30: Stage 2 recovery — life in the future. Oh, the great joy of giving PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Barry Buzza Stories of generosity abound
O
ne of the most special Christmas gifts that I received this year probably cost only several cents. A single woman who has barely enough money to put food on the table for her children had lovingly wrapped up a few chocolates and a candy cane, decorated the package with a coloured ribbon and drew a happy face on the little card. Because of the heart behind it, the gift meant more to me than I can describe. Our church, like most of the 60 others in our Tri-Cities, had the privilege this year of giving away hundreds of gifts to those who don’t usually have or get much. There were dinners and gifts for the poor, food hampers that had been generously supplied by scores of giv-
ers (one lady received her hamper and broke down crying, “You will never know how desperate our family is and how much this means to us.”). Some of our people got together and bought a used car and a year’s insurance for a family; others made it possible for a lady to get a set of false teeth. I hear stories and receive joyful thanks every day from those who’ve been touched by the love of God but I think the ones who gave the gifts were the happiest of all. Christmas has always brought out God-inspired generosity in people. Here are a couple of stories from history that illustrate the heart of the season. • London, England, 1248: King Henry III had his treasurer fill Westminster Hall with thousands of poor and homeless, and feasted them for the entire Christmas week. • Cornwall, England, 1530: Land owner John Carminow held a 12-day Yule open house for “all comers and goers, drinkers, minstrels, and danc-
ers.” He served meals made from 12 bullocks, 36 sheep, scores of hogs, lambs and fowl, 20 bushels of wheat, and poured from countless kegs of ale. • Wales, 1887: Sir Watkin Williams Wynn threw an open house for 5,000 aged and poor. He gave a shilling and a five-pound oxen loin cut to each guest. His wife, Lady Wynn, handed out blankets and flannel. • Broughton, England, 1971: Peter Curtis ran an ad in the paper offering his seven children to anyone for Christmas. (He said he considered the offer “ideal” for childless couples. His eldest daughter said, “I think he’s crazy.”) • Singapore Airport, 1989: Singapore Airlines gave away 400 sleeping bags to passengers stranded due to delayed and cancelled holiday flights. And finally... • Darlington, South Carolina, 1979: Raymond Sansbury, a garbage man, was arrested for trespassing when he entered the town dump after hours and collected,

Open the windows and let your plants breathe IN THE GARDEN Brian Minter

s we just passed the shortest, darkest day of the year, now is one of the worst times for our indoor plants. Due to the reduced daylight, the extra warmth from heaters and fireplaces and the low humidity inside our homes, keeping our indoor plants thriving can be a real challenge. But things get better as we inch along with one more minute of light each day, and there are a number of important things we can do to get our plants back in shape. One of the most important, yet often overlooked, ways of helping our plants is to change the air inside our homes. Open those doors and windows, even for a short while, to get some fresh air inside. A fresh supply of air is essential for plants, especially at this time of year. Even on the coldest days of winter, we always open the air vents of our greenhouses during the warmest part of the day to allow an exchange of air. The movement of air is also critical to prevent mildew and other fungal diseases. Many folks simply switch on the summer fan in their furnace, but a small circulatory fan can do the job nicely. With both fresh air and air movement, you too will find the atmosphere in your home feels better. It is also time to give your plants a good shower. Any dust that has collected on them creates an ideal breeding ground for pests. Washing it off with a soft, warm shower is one of the best things you can do to promote their health. Do not get the soil saturated,
just wash the foliage. This only applies to smooth leafed plants, not to violets and other flowering plants. Your plants will be clean and fresh, and the moisture will discourage spider mites. It might also be a good idea, once the plants are all in the shower, to spray them with a safe, organic pesticide, such as Safer’s soap products. Preventative organic programs, when used on a regular basis, will prevent most pest problems. They should, however, be applied with a small pressure sprayer as the spray must completely cover all parts of the plant, especially the undersides of the leaves, if it is to be effective. Use only warm water when you spray to avoid shocking your plants. When you put your plants back in their traditional location, be sure to rotate them regularly so all sides of the plant receive light. At this time of year, it might be wise to keep them close to east or north windows, or at least open the curtains wide to brighten your rooms. Extra lighting for 16 hours a day from Power Smart fixtures will also promote more vegetative growth on many plants. Proper watering is the most critical factor for the survival of all your plants. The only true way of telling if a plant needs water is by lifting the pot and feeling its weight. If the pot feels light, the plant needs water; if it feels heavy, do not water. At this time of year, you may only need to water two or three times per month, but when you do, really soak your plants thoroughly with warm water, then let them dry out. This only applies to root-bound plants. If your plants are not root-bound, downsize. Plants that are under severe stress should be covered loosely with a clear, lightweight
poly bag to create a micro-climate. Placing three or four bamboo stakes in the pot will help keep the poly off the leaves. Mist the plant frequently to increase humidity. You will be surprised to see how this treatment will improve the condition of struggling plants. This is one of the most difficult times of the year for our indoor plants, and they do require some help. Please give them the attention they need now to get them through the rest of winter so that come spring, they will bounce back with full, lush, healthy growth.
If you want to introduce some fresh life to your home by adding new tropicals, there are some very low light tolerant and resilient plants. The entire dracaena family, especially the Dragon Plant (Dracaena marginata), is tops. Philodendrons, from the low spreading P. selloum and the staked and narrow Pothos to the many new and colourful lime and burgundy varieties, are attractive and easy. The Peace Lily, with its elegant white flowers, the spiky sansevieria and the beautifully coloured foliage of ctenanthe are also amazing.

Trevor Kang’s brilliant individual effort and roof-top shot 1:03 into overtime triggered a 2-1 Cats’ triumph at PoMo Rec Complex –– their fourth straight Pacific International Jr. ‘B’ hockey league victory heading into the holiday break. Solving hot-shot Icebreakers’ goalie Michael James Barr proved a riddle for the Cats, who out-shot the visitors 43-30, including 17-6 in a lopsided third period. In fact, it was Barr and the ’Breakers who last beat the Cats –– 4-1 in Mission on Dec. 5. Tuesday’s result improved the Cats to 15-11-4 and a mere two points behind the Harold Brittain Conference-leading Abby
