Hundreds attend fantasy football event at Raymond James Stadium

TAMPA — Second-year wide receiver Mike Evans scored big at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, even while he was running routes down the road apiece at One Buc Place. After setting a franchise record with 12 touchdown catches last year, Evans was an early-round selection on most boards as more than 500 fans gathered for what was billed as the world’s largest fantasy football draft party. “I didn’t care much for fantasy football when I was a player, but let’s face it — this thing is blowing up,” said former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, who found himself at one of the 55 tables in the West Club at Raymond James Stadium as a draft participant. ”It’s getting more people into the NFL because they have a stake in it. Almost every fan I know has a team. The league may not be all in yet, but they know this is growing.” 8

Fantasy football’s popularity has expanded exponentially in the past decade, and the NFL got into the game officially in 2010. According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, 33 million people participate in fantasy football, including more than six million women. Fantasy football participants manage teams that engage in competitive leagues, accumulating points based on the statistics of NFL players. The vast majority of leagues are scored on a weekly basis, matching up teams in a head-to-head scenario, using a rotating schedule. “I was all in on this event as soon as I heard about it,” said Tampa’s Debbie Shifferd, who sat with her husband, Kevin, eagerly awaiting the draft’s opening bell. “For 15 years, we’ve had our own 12-team league online ... no money involved. This draft party was very well done. It’s a good idea and I hope this is only the start. “I see more and more women getting into it and having fun.” Three former Bucs stalwarts, Mike Alstott, Ronde Barber and Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks, were in attendance, shaking hands and posing for pictures with the draftniks. “Diehard NFL fans love to pick their favorite players and make trades,” Alstott said. “My son got me into a fantasy league once and I found that it was a lot of work, keeping up on the stats and checking to see who’s injured. But as you can see out here today, it’s great for the fans.” Barber, now an NFL analyst for Fox, has learned to appreciate fantasy frenzy. “I dismissed fantasy football until I retired,” said Barber, but a lot of people use it to follow the league. Being out of the game now, I realize how many people know stuff that I don’t know because they are so heavily into fantasy football. It has weaved itself into the fabric of the sport.” Participants arrived to a tailgate party atmosphere, with Hooters serving up chicken wings, beverages and giveaways. “It was an amazing event,” said Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “Kudos to Hooters for hosting and bringing in some Buccaneer legends.” http://tbo.com/sports/bucs/hundreds-attend-fantasy-football-event-at-raymond-jamesstadium-20150802/

Mike Alstott, Ronde Barber and Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks are slated to appear at a fantasy football draft sponsored by Hooters and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “Hooters had a tremendous idea to try and get the world record,” said Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “Some great Buc legends are coming out, and it’s going to be an awesome event. We’ve got to get to about 500 people to get the record, and I feel good that we’ll have a great shot.” The draft party will take place Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the West Club at Raymond James Stadium. Bucs: World-record try at fantasy football draft party

TAMPA — Hours before the Bucs’ first open practice at One Buc Place on Sunday, football fans filled the club area of Raymond James Stadium, hoping to set a world record for the largest fantasy football draft party. Hoping to top 500 participants, organizers had 40-plus tables, each with 10 fans drafting their own league, with former Bucs greats including Derrick Brooks, Mike Alstott and Ronde Barber mingling with them. The most common first overall pick was Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, who was picked first in 14 leagues. Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles, Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell and Colts QB Andrew Luck went first in five leagues each. And if you hold enough fantasy drafts at Ray-Jay, eventually Bucs fandom will overcome traditional rankings. Bucs rookie QB Jameis Winston and WR Mike Evans went No. 1 overall in one draft each. 13

Guinness World Records had an “adjudicator” on hand to verify the crowd total, requiring that each person not only start but complete his draft. “We have between 40,000 and 60,000 applications for records each year, worldwide. This is a new category for us,” said Philip Robertson, who a day earlier was in Texas verifying a “chanting marathon” that saw a group of 582 people chanting for more than 24 hours straight. Robertson, born in Scotland and raised in England, has come to know American football through his record-checking. He has been in attendance at Seahawks and Chiefs games attempting to reset the world record for loudest crowds. “You have these incredible communities that want to come together to set records,” said Robertson, who witnessed a 1,500-pound peach cobbler in Louisiana last month. “It’s fun to see.” Pre Season Schedule Aug. 15 at Minnesota, 8, Ch. 8 Aug. 24 vs Cincinnati, 8, ESPN Aug. 29 vs Cleveland, 7, Ch. 8 Sept. 3 at Miami, 7, Ch. 8 Radio: 103.5-FM, 620-AM http://www.tampabay.com/sports/football/bucs/bucs-world-record-try-at-fantasy-football-draftparty/2239753

Bucs Legends Alsott, Barber & Brooks Hosting World’s Largest Fantasy Football Draft Party on August 2 uly 22, 2015 (TAMPA, FL) - The Hooters World’s Largest Fantasy Football Draft Party will have an extremely impressive roster of Tampa Bay Buccaneer legends for the August 2 event that is targeting a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS ® Official Attempt for Largest Sports Draft Party. Mike Alstott, Ronde Barber and Derrick Brooks, three of the most popular players in the history of the Bucs franchise, are all scheduled to be a part of the draft party. “If being part of a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® Official Attempt for Largest Sports Draft Party isn’t enough to convince fantasy football fanatics to register, how about having the opportunity to hang out with Mike Alstott, Ronde Barber and Derrick Brooks,” said Carl Sweat, chief marketing officer for Hooters. “Hooters was born in nearby Clearwater and has grown to become ‘Fantasy Football Draft Headquarters’ for fans across America, so we are excited to be able to bring these three fan favorites to be a part of our event at the stadium where they have made so many great memories for thousands of Bucs fans over the years.” Alstott is a six-time Pro Bowl selection who was also voted All-Pro three times. He spent his entire career with the Buccaneers from 1996-2006 and will be inducted in the Bucs Ring of Honor this fall. Nicknamed The A-Train, Alstott was a coveted Fantasy Football draft pick due to his ability to find the end zone. The six-time Pro Bowler holds the Bucs all-time record for most touchdowns with 71. There’s no questioning the popularity of Pro Football Hall of Famer Brooks, who was just voted as the all-time Fan Favorite in a poll conducted on Buccaneers.com. One of the most decorated Bucs player of all time, the former first round draft pick from Florida State was an 11-time Pro Bowl selection and a nine-time All-Pro. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014 and had his number 55 uniform retired by the team. Barber played his entire 16-year career for the Buccaneers and was a five-time Pro Bowler, in addition to earning All-Pro honors three times. Barber’s 1,428 tackles are the second-most in team history behind Hall of Famer Brooks. He’s also the team’s all-time leader in interceptions (47) and defensive touchdowns (8), stats that were valuable for fantasy football general managers who selected the Bucs defense during his career.
