TLC Ambassador and Canadian Women’s Soccer Team Goalie

Stephanie Labbé Announces

Excellence Fund

(and a Whole Bunch of Other Cool Stuff!)

We had to reach out around the world to find our fearless TLC ambassador Stephanie Labbé. We caught up with her as she finished her showing at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

TLC: What’s new? Steph: After a pretty tough World Cup showing, I took a week to physically and mentally recover with my family. I am now heading back to North Carolina to finish up my professional season with the North Carolina Courage until the end of October. I am hopefully bringing home a league title and Championship win! All of our games are live streamed for free via NWSL Soccer app or on yahoosport.com. Our schedule is www.nccourage.com.

TLC: You’ve recently announced an Excellence Fund, what’s that about? Steph: The Stephanie Labbé Excellence Fund works in partnership with KidSport Alberta to grant kids from low income families in the TriRegion extra support to cover registration costs and equipment. You can find all their information and ways to donate on my website, www.stephlabbe.com. Click on the “Excellence Fund” link.

TLC: Why did you start the Excellence Fund? Steph: It’s really important for me to give back to the community and impact our future generation of athletes. I was very fortunate to grow up in a family who could support my love for the sport. We could afford equipment, registration, travel costs and other expenses associated with playing sports, but I know not all kids are so fortunate. Sport has had such a massive impact on my life in so many ways, and I want to make sure that no kid is deprived of those experiences because of financial limitations.

6

7 TLC: Tell us about Project Athlete? Steph: My brother, sister-in-law, partner and I have launched a clothing line called Project Athlete. It is athlete-inspired lifestyle wear to encourage all of us to embrace the inner Project in all of us. Project Athlete is about embracing our imperfections, being able to laugh at ourselves and simply enjoy the ride. Everyone has a journey, and everyone’s story is unique, we want to inspire people to be proud of who they are, what they have been through, and not take themselves too seriously. You can find out more, as well as shop the line at www.project-athlete.com

TLC: You’ve just come off the FIFA Women’s World Cup, do you have any advice for athletes facing their own big games?

TLC: What are your plans for the fall after your season ends with the North Carolina Courage? Steph: I will come back to Alberta and spend November and December finding a balance between recovering after a long season and preparing for the Olympic Qualification tournament in January with the National Team.

TLC: Speaking of balance, what is your favourite way to relax? Steph: I like to walk in nature with my pup Rio. Being outside, smelling the fresh air, and unplugging is the most grounding and relaxing experience for me.

TLC: Finally, what is your favourite workout song right now? Steph: Teddy Beats—Saturday (feat. Jolee Nikoal)

Steph: My biggest advice is to prepare how you want to play. If you work hard in training, eat right, train your brain to think positive thoughts, breathe through hard times and believe in yourself, when it comes time to play a big game or race a big race, all you have to do is be confident in your preparation. Be confident that you are prepared and trust yourself.

I want to do my part to help young kids experience the wonderful world of sport.

Aquatics WHAT YOUR SWIM INSTRUCTOR WANTS YOU TO KNOW We get a lot of questions from parents about how swim lessons work and what to expect. Here are some of our frequently asked questions as we head into swim lessons!

Is it normal for children to repeat swim levels?

It is important for children to have lots of exposure to an environment to practice skills for them to improve. We have your children for 10 classes; those classes range from 30–60 minutes. If parents don’t have time to bring their children swimming outside of lessons to practice skills, have fun and get used to being in the water (because children practice their skills through play), they will take longer to progress through the levels. It is normal to repeat a level a couple of times. If your child is stuck on one particular skill, ask your instructor how best to help them master it.

Is it okay to take a break in-between sessions?

Depending on your child’s growth cycle, sometimes they are growing into their bodies and lack coordination. Often children just need to grow and mature before they are physically ready to do certain skills. Keep coming swimming, but come to play and have fun.

Why do performance criteria need to be “mastered” to complete a level?

When children have items on their report card that are not checked off, it means they did not yet demonstrate that skill three times to their instructor. Mastery means being able to perform the skill as if it came naturally, i.e. every time you ask, they can do it perfectly. They need to master the skills in one level before being moved on to the next level.

Reach out and get in touch with our swimming experts any time by calling 780–948–3205 or emailing info@trileisure.com. 8

Can’t I just register my child in the next level?

If your child did not complete a level, then it is recommended to repeat that level. The skills in the next level will be more difficult—longer distance swims, deep water exposure, etc.—and it would put your child, as well as the others in class, at risk if they do not have the skills to participate fully. Or it could hold everyone in the class back as the instructor has to spend more time working on skills that should have been achieved in the previous level.

Can my child wear goggles for lessons?

It is important to let your child be comfortable in the water without goggles. We know goggles are very helpful with some children during lessons, and we don’t have a problem if they choose to wear them; however, we are concerned about children becoming dependent on using goggles. They should be able to swim without goggles and still be comfortable in the water. Should they ever fall into water unexpectedly, i.e. fall off a dock, or jump off a diving board and their goggles fall off, we want them to be able to swim to safety with ease.

Parent Talk Days

The last five minutes of the 6th class are designated as time to chat with your child’s instructor about their progress—we call it Parent Talk Day. Although this specific day was put aside for the purpose of relaying information, it can happen before or after any class. The swim classes have been scheduled to have five minutes in between each class. So if you have questions or are curious about how your child is doing, feel free to talk to their instructor before or after class on ANY day.

PROGRAMMING ALERT FOR PARENTS! We are replacing the “First Time Sea Otter” class with the Unparented Sea Turtle class. WHY THE CHANGE?

BENEFITS

We find that three-year-olds require more time to transition to swimming independently. They also need a more thorough orientation to swimming, which includes movement through water.

This change will help your little ones be more comfortable in the water. It will provide an easier transition to the next levels of the Red Cross Program. At this age the three-year-olds require a lot of socialization to help them adjust to independent swim lessons— they need to learn to listen to the instructor, to be there without mom or dad, to follow instructions and be part of a group.

FIRST TIME SEA OTTER

12

UNPARENTED SEA TURTLE

Once children turn four, they will be better prepared to tackle the required skills for the Sea Otter class.

DRYLAND 13 AQUATICS

UNPARENTED

3.

Salamander (3–5 years) $55 members/$65 non-members

Swimmers work on improving their front and back float and jumping into chest-deep water unassisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide and swimmers will be able to swim two metres upon completion.

4.

Sunfish (3–5 years)

$55 members/$65 non-members

Swimmers work on kicking and can perform glides (front and back), enter deep water safely, float in deep water, swim with a PFD and swim five metres continuously.

Local Mom Jen Austin Credits the TLC as

A Place for Kids and Moms to Enjoy a Healthy Balance In our last issue we introduced you to Jennifer Austin, a local mom who advocates for the importance of self-care for moms and dads.

18

Local resident Jen Austin became a mom to baby Scott in 2011. For those first few months, she enjoyed the casual freedom that focusing on a new baby brings; creating routines around nursing, visiting, playing, snuggling, cooking and going for long walks in the neighbourhood. After a few weeks at home with baby Scott, Jen decided to see what her new community of Spruce Grove had to offer. She thought she would be on maternity leave for one year and wanted to take full advantage of it, so she started meeting with a new mom’s group at the TLC.

DRYLAND Since then, the TLC has become an integral part of daily life for Jen, Scott and her second son Kane. Jen now wants to advocate for other new moms to help them find strength and enjoyment in their new role as a parent.

TLC: How did becoming a mom change you? Jen: Motherhood enriched my life in more ways than I can count. It brings you into a world of nurturing your children, gaining a sense of freedom and the opportunity to explore life with a playful spirit.

TLC: What are some of the biggest challenges to overcome while raising children? Jen: For me, the biggest challenge in raising children has been to find and maintain a healthy balance between their needs and my own. I overcame this by finding activities where we can all get our needs met. The TLC is one of those places where the kids can enjoy themselves and so can I. It’s imperative that mothers find ways to recharge their batteries and get out of their comfort zone.

TLC: How did you find your own balance? Jen: After attending a post-natal fitness program, we continued on with many more children’s programs like Munchkins in Motion, Mini Sportsters and swimming lessons. As my boys grew and I felt comfortable, I put them in child minding to give myself some much needed ‘me time’. While the TLC staff took good care of my boys, I would enjoy the track, take part in an AquaFit class, or some days I would just buy a coffee or a Booster Juice and relax on the couches reading or crocheting. The TLC offered me a place to exercise, relax and connect with friends, all while my sons got to enjoy socializing with other babies and toddlers outside their family circle. As they grew, the TLC gave me memories of countless playdates and friendships that I will cherish forever.

TLC: How do you support your new mom friends? Jen: I think the best support a new mom can receive is the gift of sleep! Head over and offer to snuggle baby while mom takes a rest, bring some basic groceries, some baked goodies, tidy up the home and have a good chat. There are a lot of families who do not have family near and lending your support in this way is appreciated by any new mama.

Striving to be a healthy happy mom is the best thing you can do for children. Having them see you socially and physically active is key to them developing a sense of their own well being.

19

TLC: What do you enjoy doing as a family now that your sons are a bit older? Jen: Now that my sons are six and eight we keep busy and active outdoors —whether we are heading to parks, lakes, bike rides, toboggan hills, skating rinks or local events. Today the TLC is where my boys play indoor soccer, we go swimming or play basketball as a family and attend friends’ soccer games.

TLC: What is important advice you would share with other soon-to-be parents? Jen: Enjoy your time at home with your kids because it goes by in a flash. Make the most of that short, precious time in your life by connecting with other new moms and dads. Whether you have one year of mat leave or many years as a stay-at-home mom, time spent in our community with our children is important.

TLC Welcomes

Super Seniors for Free Fitness

What is the secret to living a happy, long life? We asked one of our Golden Members, Bill Hoyt, who visits the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre almost every day. “I encourage folks to stay active and exercise—just do it. To make it easier to get started, it’s okay to take it easy until you get in the regular habit of exercising.”

Bill Hoyt |

I encourage folks to stay active and exercise —just do it!

Bill should be considered an expert in this area, as he is getting ready to celebrate his 90th birthday in September. The long-time Stony Plain resident has been coming to the TLC almost every day for nine years. He focuses on using weights and machines in order “to keep whatever muscle I have left” and credits the TLC for helping him maintain his health. “I love the staff, they are all very good to me. I’ve been lucky to have met some very good people at the Tri.”

Are you at least 80 years young? Did you know that TLC offers a FREE membership to anyone over the age of 80 called the TLC Golden Membership?

Want to Become a Super Senior? Join us in an AquaFit or Benefit Through Resistance Drop-In Program*! * Check with your doctor prior to starting any exercise program!
