to the TLC!

HOURS OF OPERATION JANUARY to JUNE (NOTE! OUR HOURS HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED!)

It’s 2021! Let’s make it our most active year yet! We have some big goals this year and we hope you do too! As always, we remain committed to the health and well-being of everyone in the Tri-Municipal Region, and believe we have something for each and every resident to get active here at the TLC. Whether it is registering for a fitness program like Total Shred Tabata, attending a drop-in AquaFit class or lane swim, or bringing the family out to play badminton or go for a public swim, we are here to provide opportunities to get active in whatever way you love. And if you need more motivation, sign-up with a personal trainer who can meet you where you are and help you plan to crush some serious health and fitness goals this year! We are doing everything we can to make your visits to the TLC as safe as possible. Although it is a brand new year, it is likely that we will still continue to be impacted by COVID. But with our protocols and guidelines in place we are confident that we can still keep our community active here at the TLC! By now, you probably know all the things you need to do to keep yourself as safe as possible when venturing outside of your homes, and we appreciate your cooperation with wearing your mask, cleaning equipment before and after use, and properly distancing from others when at the TLC. We are excited for an amazing and active year and hope to see you soon at the TLC!

Member Profile James Leskiw

MEMBER TAKES ON CANC ER WITH HELP FROM THE TRANSALTA TRI LEISURE CENTRE It’s not often that a person knows the exact moment their life changes forever. For James Leskiw, that moment was early in the morning on November 13th, 2018. “I was just getting ready to finish my workout at the TLC and was doing one last lap around the track. I was coming around the corner and felt my right leg and arm shoot up. Something was not right. As soon as I put my leg down it started dragging. Then everything started to go black. I remember falling to the floor and feeling really tired. I saw a lady walk past me and that was it.” Forty-five minutes later, James came to as he was being put on a stretcher by the paramedics. Once he arrived at the hospital, it didn’t take long to understand what was going on. A CT scan revealed a brain tumor.

Exercise continued to help James, even as he completed thirty radiation treatments and then an additional six months of chemotherapy treatments. He joined a research program called ACE—the Alberta Cancer Exercise program. The program was created for cancer survivors and those undergoing treatment. Participants are monitored to see how their fitness, balance, flexibility and muscle strength improve by participating in twice weekly training sessions for six months. The program shows that exercise helps patients manage the symptoms that go with cancer treatment, like cancer-related fatigue. Exercise also helps patients recover more quickly and easily from their cancer treatments because it slows down the decline of their overall fitness and strength.

The diagnosis came as a surprise for James because he kept himself in great shape. “I have a strong family history of cancer. My mom had two bouts of cancer and my dad had prostate cancer. I understand how important daily exercise is, so I created my own routine by visiting the TLC every morning before work.” One of the bigger challenges for James after his diagnosis was finding a way to keep up his daily exercise. The tumor diagnosis made it impossible for James to drive, and he had no way to get to the TLC in the morning. Keeping up his strength before surgery and subsequent treatments became a secret weapon for James. He was told he was one of the fittest people going into the surgery, which James says contributed to his quick recovery. “Even though I had major brain surgery, I was in the hospital for only three days.”

I created my own routine by visiting the TLC every morning before work.

Even after the ACE program wrapped up for James, he was determined to return to his daily exercise routine at the TransAlta TriLeisure Centre. One year to the day that his life changed, James returned to the running track to finish the lap that he didn’t finish that fateful morning.

If you can take even small steps to be more active, you are going to feel better and be better prepared to handle anything that life brings you. “It was important for me to finish that lap. I needed that closure, to run that lap.” In a twist of fate, James ran into the same lady who helped him out when he passed out on the track exactly one year prior.

He says, “she helped fill in a few of the missing pieces for me when I blacked out. Apparently, I was cognizant enough to give my locker number and lock combination. She was the one that noticed something was wrong with me and called for help. I was so glad to see her again and thanked her for helping me.” James has always been an advocate of the TransAlta TriLeisure Centre. “I have to give kudos to the Tri, the whole family aspect of the gym is very uplifting. I love that the facility is so well-used by moms with their toddlers, seniors and everyone else in the community. It’s so positive.” Even though he’s been a member for over five years, James says the TLC is now more important to him than ever before. “The ACE program proved the positive effect of exercise on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Before my diagnosis, staying fit was always important. But now, I consider it my life. Hopefully it will prolong my life, and if I have to go through treatments again, I’ll be ready to take it on.” He adds, “I think of myself as an investment. The doctors, nurses and staff all spent a lot of time on me, investing their energy to treat my brain tumor. Exercise is a way to protect that investment. I want to advocate the importance of exercise for everyone, regardless of their health. If you can take even small steps to be more active, you are going to feel better and be better prepared to handle anything that life brings you.”

Aquatics COVID-19 Updates

Safety is Our Top Priority We care about the health and safety of our staff, patrons, and the entire community, so we are doing our utmost to keep everyone as safe as possible during COVID. Please take note of the following changes:

1

2

Let’s get stronger together!

3

4

NEW CLASS FORMAT FOR SOME LEVELS

INCREASED CLEANING MEASURES

LIMITED CAPACITIES IN CLASSES AND SPACES

BOOK YOUR SPOT TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

Preschool and Swim Kids 1 & 2 levels are now parented! This will allow us to maintain our physical distance from students while also ensuring their safety in the water. Parents or caregivers (14 years old and above) will need to be in the water with their children, no further than arms’ reach away. Instructors will maintain their distance or wear face shields to protect participants and themselves.

Between bookings, all deck and change room area touchpoints are sanitized to prevent spread of COVID. Please be diligent and use hand sanitizer or wash hands, as well as continue to have a cleansing shower before entering the pools.

You will notice that we have posted capacities in our change room areas and are now planning classes and programs with distance and safety in mind. Please ensure you stay two metres from others at all times when in the pool area. Let’s spread out and give each other space!

For swimming lessons, the registration process has not changed! For lane swim, AquaFit and public swim, we ask that patrons pre-book according to the posted schedules. This helps us in two ways: firstly, we can now provide contact tracing information to AHS should we need it, and secondly, we can space out programs and activities, allowing every group to have some pool time in the safest way possible. Please visit our website (Facilities tab) for schedule and booking details.

PLEASE REMEMBER FOR LESSONS & PROGRAMS!

• As always, if you feel ill or are required to isolate for any reason, please stay home and get better! • Drop off and pick up for swim lessons are through the dry seating entrance or through the change rooms. No spectators are allowed on deck, but the upper viewing area is now open. Please observe two-metre distance and wear your mask at all times in this area. • Please aim to arrive no earlier than five minutes before your scheduled activity or class time.

For more information on what we are doing to keep you safe, and for pool schedule information and bookings, please visit our website’s blog, updated frequently! 8

For programs with this symbol, one parent or caregiver (over 14) is required to provide arms’ reach water safety measures.

Guidelines

For Participation in TLC Dryland Programs

We have worked hard to ensure that all of our programming options are as safe as possible for you and your family. • We have spaced out activity areas to maintain two metre distance for low-intensity and three metre distance for high-intensity between fitness instructors and participants. • We have increased our cleaning and sanitization measures. • Staff are wearing masks in public spaces and we ask all participants to do so as well when arriving to and leaving your activity space. Face coverings are not recommended for exercise or swimming, which is why we have ensured physical distancing in these spaces. Please read through and follow these guidelines to keep everyone safe and healthy as possible this fall!

1 2 3 4 5

IF YOU ARE SICK, DO NOT COME TO YOUR CLASS Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, runny nose and sore throat. For a full list of symptoms and instructions on whether or not to isolate or be tested, please scan this QR code with your phone to take you directly to the AHS Self-Assessment Tool.

ARRIVE FOR YOUR PROGRAM RIGHT ON TIME Arrive at the program space no more than five minutes before your class or program begins.

AHS SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL Scan this QR code to visit the AHS Self-Assessment Tool

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF YOUR INSTRUCTOR OR TLC STAFF We are trained to keep you safe while at our facility, and our COVID protocols are no different! Please be sure to follow instructions from your TLC instructor and always ask if you have questions!

CLEAN YOUR EQUIPMENT BEFORE AND AFTER USE. Our staff and custodians are hard at work cleaning equipment and touchpoints all day, but we ask that you use the cleaning agents and towels provided to clean equipment before and after use.

SANITIZE YOUR HANDS | PRACTICE RESPIRATORY ETIQUETTE By now, you probably know the drill! Please sanitize your hands upon entering, at least once per hour while in the facility, and upon exiting our facility. Wear a face covering when moving to your activity space and upon leaving the building.

Let’s get stronger together! 24 24
