About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm. We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we

have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Grassroots Talk

Good evening & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium for the visit of Holmer Green. We welcome their players, officials and supporters for the short journey to Tring and wish them a safe journey home afterwards. The two clubs have been regular opponents over the last 20 or so years and last met in the 2017/18 season, with Athletic winning the home game 3-1 but losing out 3-0 in the reverse fixture. Since then Holmer were moved by the FA to the Hellenic League and now for 2021/22 have been moved back to the Spartan South Midlands. We actually played each other 11 years ago today and you can see the match report and pictures on page 27 & 28. Today’s match sponsor is Heygates and you can find our more about them on page 15. We have availability on future games (see page 14) including those against Leighton Town, Leverstock Green and Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, so please speak to Graham Bright if you are interested. Alternatively you could choose to sponsor your favourite player for the season (page 13) Our young reserve side got their first win of the campaign on Saturday with a 3-1 win against Harpenden Town and you can see highlights of this game on page 8 and read the match report on page 30. This week we will be relaunching our TAFC YouTube Channel. First up will be the opening episode of a regular feature “From The Dugout” which kicks off with an interview with first team manager Ryan Sturges. Make sure you subscribe and keep an eye on our other social media for exclusive updates. The links to these are on page 8. Our Under 18s are in FA Youth Cup action on Thursday night with a tough opening tie against Hendon Town. If you are able to volunteer for the club on a regular basis or even just occasionally please speak to a committee member. We are always grateful for extra support.

Match Report Saturday 21st August 2021 Emirates FA CUP—Preliminary Round Bishop’s Cleeve 2-0 Tring Athletic Our run in the worlds oldest competition came to an end at Bishops Cleeve, a picturesque town just north of Cheltenham. After a close and cagey first half our hosts (nicknamed the “Mitres”) opened the scoring on the hour following 2 controversial moments but then finally put the tie to bed 8 minutes from time to book their place in the next round. One of the benefits of playing in national competitions is that you get to play teams from different parts of the country who compete in different leagues. After a 2.5 hour journey we arrived at the stadium which had a stunning location at the foot of Cleeve Hill the highest point in the Cotswolds. For train enthusiasts you could see the smoke and hear the sounds of the local heritage railway from the ground. Our hosts came into the game in outstanding form having won 4 and drawn 1 of their 5 games so far scoring 16 goals and conceding 5. Their form had taken them to the top of the Hellenic Premier Division and so we knew we had a tough match on our hands. Interestingly they had played all 5 games at home and were due to play their next 4 at home as well, which was evidentially due to the fact that they will soon rip up the pitch and replace it with a 5G surface which seemed a shame because the pitch looked in superb condition. The setting may have been idyllic but the first half was far from the concept of total football with both teams circling each other like shadow boxers, looking for an opening to land a big blow but being careful not to leave themselves open to a counter attack. The home side tried to threaten from long throws from their tall left back Leroy O’Diero and they had 3 successive corners around the half hour mark but we managed to deal with these potential threats well. Our opponents did produce a great move in the 20th minute but Dave Saunders came out quickly to snuff out the threat at the feet of Blaine Waugh. To be honest we did not produce much of a threat during the early stages being content to keep our shape and defend well against a team that had a lot of scoring potential amongst their forward players. But as the half wore on we did show some glimmer of hope with Manny Gbojuade whipping over a dangerous low cross which forced the home keeper Sam Gilder to come out bravely and claim amongst the feet of the players. Kieran Turner slipped a lovely ball through to Chris Vardy who had a clear sight of goal and had the ball on his favoured left foot but he slipped at an unfortunate moment. Manny Gbojuade then seized upon fine cross from Frankie Hercules but the home centre back Mark Prichett produced a brilliant saving tackle.

Match Report So it came as no surprise that a close, competitive half finished scoreless. HT 0-0 The Mitres leading scorer Jack Watts sent an early shot wide of the goal and soon afterwards following a good move Ollie Butler had a couple of shots blocked. We were definitely looking the livelier team when controversy struck just before the 60 minute mark. Kieran Turner’s left foot shot forced a terrific diving save from the keeper with Ollie Butler following up to collect the loose ball but his attempt to get free was foiled by the defender’s hand. A cry went up for a penalty which seemed fair but the officials ignored the appeals. The feeling of injustice was compounded a few minutes later when a free kick was awarded after the home player slipped over. It seem rather harsh and to add insult to injury the resulting free kick was deflected in for an own goal. Score 1-0. The whole nature of the game now changed as we had to chase the game and find a way through a strong home defence which was made more difficult by the absence our centre forward Chris Blunden who was unwell. Pushing forward we left ourselves more vulnerable at the back and sub Zac Guinan headed a good chance wide from a fine cross from Jack Watts. We then had a lucky escape when the normally lethal Jack Watts missed a sitter by shooting wide of the post. We were not creating any clear chances and the killer blow came 8 minutes from time when the busy midfielder Harrison Reeves stabbed home to put his side into a commanding 2 goal lead. Score 2-0. We kept pressing more in hope than anything else and Kieran Turner’s deflected shot forced Sam Gilder to tip the ball over the bar. Reeves forced Dave Saunders into a good save with a rasping shot but the home run down the clock to see out a convincing 2 nil win. There was a feeling of injustice after the game that the key decisions had not gone our way and that the crucial opening goal came from an unfortunate own goal. But that’s the way it goes in football and full marks to our opponents who deserved their win in the end and we wish them all the best in the next round. We also appreciated their hospitality which was excellent. Finally a interesting fact from our host’s match stats which showed they had 57% possession to our 43%, and had 17 shots with 7 on target whist we had 16 shots with 9 on target which seems to indicate that the match was closer than the result shows. In Tring Hertfordshire there has been a flour mill since 1875. Originally it was a windmill, and the company was run by Mr.William Mead. Sadly the windmill was demolished in 1910 to make way for a wheat silo. In those days, William Mead lived on site, in a handsome house next to the yard, and only owned half the area taken up by the mill of today. The remaining space was occupied by a boatbuilder, Bushell Brothers, who built narrowboats. A perfect location, right on the canal that is such a delightful feature of today’s mill. The Heygate family took over William Mead’s business in 1945, and today mills in excess of 100,000 tons of wheat in a year. This is mainly bakers flour, but there is also a major commitment to wholemeal for biscuits, bulk outlets, and a large output of 1.5 kilo bags from the prepacked flour plant – especially for the consumer market. As in the bygone days of the Tring windmill, only two men are needed to operate the system - but in those days they milled half a ton per hour, and now, with a fully automated computerised installation, more than twelve tons per hour is produced. Heygate’s Tring mill has eighty employees, and sixteen trucks delivering to companies and outlets throughout the south of England. CLICK ON THE LOGO ABOVE TO GO TO HEYGATES WEBSITE

Our opponents Originally founded in 1908, Holmer played initially in The Chesham and District League. Matches were played at Campbell’s Meadow, (now the Rosetti Estate), close to a tennis racket factory. Sometime before 1934 the Club moved to Holmer Green Common and set up headquarters in The Bat and Ball. In 1934 the Club switched to The Wycombe Combination League. The first trophy won by Holmer Green was The Chesham Charity Cup in 1939, the first of 28 Cups and Championships won thus far by the 1st XI. The early 70’s saw the start of a very successful thirty years in the Club’s history. Holmer Green moved to their present ground, Watchet Lane, in 1975 when the new Holmer Green Sports Association pavilion was fully ready. Holmer won The Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup in 1976 -77. Senior Status was thus achieved and since then the Club has striven to play at the highest level possible for a strictly amateur club. The Club, through current President John Anderson, was heavily involved in the moves that set up The Chiltonian League in 1984. That League embraced clubs from no less than six different counties. Holmer had been very successful in the Chiltonian, and believed that a move to a better run league, where the clubs were encouraged to improve facilities, should be the next step. The Chiltonian were reluctant to lose their “flagship” club and tried to stop the move to the The South Midlands League. Not until August 1995 did Holmer Green, through the FA’s appeal system, successfully, switch Leagues. This move gave Holmer Green the impetus to finally erect a Stand, now called The Don Want Stand in honour of their former long-serving groundsman who still helps out with his time and expertise, on a regular basis. In 2014 Don was presented with some mementos to mark his 50 years with the Football Club.

Holmer Green Premier Division status was achieved in 1999 after winning the Senior Division twice in four seasons, being 2nd and 4th in between. Floodlights were erected. Centenary events started with a visit from a full Wycombe Wanderers team in July 2007 when the ground record of over 800 was recorded. In 2008 the Senior Club formally merged with Holmer Green Minors FC to become “One Club” and this occasion coincided with the new Club as a whole being named “ Club of the Year 2008” by Bucks & Milton Keynes Sports Partnership. Season 2008-09 was Holmer’s 10th successive one in the Premier Division. After an unexpectedly long stay in the Premier Division, Holmer Green was demoted to Division One for season 2009-10, despite avoiding the two relegation positions. Work immediately began to regain the “F” Grading required for Step 5 football to return to Watchet Lane. The 1st XI won the First Division by three points in 2009-10 losing only 3 of 40 games. The coveted “F” Grading was achieved again in 2011 Manager Chris Allen, who was appointed in 2009, kept the regained Step 5 status for another incredible nine seasons before stepping down in May 2019, with Holmer having gained enough points by early March. Chris’ successor, Dave Lynch, resigned after a poor start in August and September 2019. Matt Stowell succeeded Lynch, and results turned before the season was ended due to Covid-19. Matt continued to rebuild for 2020-21 with a seventh place when the season was again terminated early. The club were very happily returned to The Spartan South Midlands League in Summer 2021, with Matt continuing in charge.

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF “NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE SATURDAY 21st AUGUST/SUNDAY 22nd AUGUST WEEKEND HEADLINES Harefield United, Oxhey Jets and Baldock Town all record FA Cup giant-killings. Irchester United concede seven for the second time this season. The 61FC (Luton) still seek their first SSML point since 2019. Bovingdon, Old Bradwell United and Winslow United all hit five on the road. THE EMIRATES FA CUP Preliminary Round Three SSML sides enjoyed giant-killing wins in the FA Cup Preliminary Round, Harefield United, Oxhey Jets and Baldock Town all defeating visiting Step 4 sides. Harefield United seeing off last season’s FA Vase finalists Binfield 2-1, Oxhey Jets defeating Didcot Town by a solitary goal while 24 hours later Baldock Town overcame Grays Athletic by the odd goal in three. Joining those three in the hat for Monday’s draw are Hadley avenged their 2015-16 cup defeat with a 4-0 success at Saffron Walden Town while Ardley United, Flackwell Heath, Broadfields United and Risborough Rangers face midweek replays and Arlesey Town await the outcome of an appeal to discover their Preliminary Round opponents. Ardley United saw hosts Royal Wootton Bassett Town equalize in stoppage time to deny them outright progress while Flackwell Heath were also denied late on when Tuffley Rovers made it 2-2 with two minutes left on the click. Broadfields United were held 0-0 at home by Reading City while Risborough Rangers were held 1-1 at home by Ascot United and more on this game later in the ramblings. Elsewhere it is a case of cancelling the open top bus parades in May for Tring Athletic and Leighton Town, the former being beaten 0-2 at Bishop’s Cleeve while the latter went down by a solitary goal at Brentwood Town. PREMIER DIVISION With the FA Cup taking centre stage there were just three Premier Division fixtures, Harpenden Town replaced Leverstock Green at the top of the standings following a 4-3 win at Pancake Lane. While there were first league wins of the new campaign for Aylesbury Vale Dynamos and New Salamis, the former beating visiting Crawley Green 4-1 (a result that sent the visitors to the bottom of the standings) while New Salamis enjoyed a 3-0 win on the road at London Colney.

The Views Expressed Are Solely My Own, Are Written Tongue In Cheek And Should Be Taken With A Pinch Of Salt A weekly column courtesy of the SSML Fixture Secretary

DIVISION ONE Stotfold maintained their 100% start to the season with a hard fought 2-1 win at Wellingborough Whitworth to extend their lead at the top of the table to three points. Winslow United moved into second place with a game in hand as they too maintained their perfect start by winning 5-0 at Burton Park Wanderers. Joining Winslow on three points behind the leaders are Northampton Sileby Rangers and Amersham Town, both clubs enjoying away wins, Northampton 4-1 at bottom club London Tigers while a last minute winner saw Amersham edge out hosts Bedford by the odd goal in five. At the other end of the standings Shefford Town & Campton recorded their first points of the new campaign with a 4-0 home success against fellow strugglers Rushden & Higham United while life remains tough for Irchester United as they conceded seven for the second time this season when going down 1-7 at Penn & Tylers Green. Elsewhere there were wins for Ampthill Town (2-0 at home against Long Crendon), Langford (4-1 winners over visiting Kidlington Reserves), Raunds Town (3-0 at home against Thame United Reserves) and Letchworth Garden City Eagles (2-0 on the road at Buckingham Athletic). DIVISION TWO On a day that saw six away wins in Division Two Old Bradwell United moved to the top of the standings (albeit on goal difference) with a 5-0 win on the road at Berkhamsted Raiders, the visitors being gifted with two own goals to set them on their way. Morning leaders Berkhamsted Comrades travelled to newbies Milton Keynes College Football Academy and returned with the full quota of points following a solitary goal win on what was the hosts first ever game in the SSML. At the other end of the standings the two bottom clubs at the start of play faced each other with Pitstone & Ivinghoe coming out on top against visiting Codicote 5-2. Bovingdon enjoyed a 5-0 success at Aston Clinton while New Bradwell St Peter won 4-1 at Sarratt. There were mixed fortunes for Risborough Rangers Development and The 61FC (Luton) as they began their 202122 campaigns, Risborough securing a 1-0 win at Buckingham United while 61FC went down 1-4 at home to Eynesbury United, a result that leaves the Luton based club still looking for their first league point since a 2-2 draw at Sarratt on the 31st of August 2019. The day’s other game saw Totternhoe and Tring Corinthians AFC sharing the spoils after a 2-2 draw. AND FINALLY The Tweet of the Day goes to Raunds Town – And it’s a 3rd for the Shopmates, would love to tell you what happened but was in the little boy’s room. Don’t forget that every Sunday afternoon the Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks), a show all about local non-league football. The popular show presented by Ollie Bayliss has been increased to two hours each week and is the perfect opportunity to catch up with our local nonleague scene at all levels.

On This Day—31st August 2010

First half goals from Vinnie Iannone and Tony Fields were enough to take all 3 points for Athletic. A goal back for our visitors saw a nervy last 15 minutes but Tring held out to continue our 100% record. Games between these two sides are usually fairly close affairs, in fact Holmer Green have gained some very good results here in past years. This season they are making a return to the Premier Division after spending a season in Division 1, due to Ground Grading problems. Tring had to make several changes with injuries being picked up from Saturday’s great win over AFC Hayes. Hopefully Chris Salmon and Henry Thomas will be back soon, but it looks like Captain Graham Hall will miss several weeks with ligament damage. The game started out at a fast pace with Tring’s changed formation at the back, struggling to gel in the opening exchanges. Holmer had a few breaks, however these came to nothing with Dean Allen getting caught off side on several occasions. Tring started to sort themselves out at the back and were feeding balls quickly to the Nick Jackson, Danny Gray, Ryan Redford and the hard working Vinnie Iannone. The first chance came in the 11th minute when Danny Gray made a run down the left before finding Tony Fields-who relished wearing the captains armband- Tony found Ryan Radford who’s shot was well saved by Green’s keeper Dan Little. Nick Jackson went on a jinking run two minutes later but his shot from 20 yards went high over the bar. Green were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area when Steve Smith was penalised for a late challenge, however the player had tripped over Smithy’s legs as he slid in and the referee took no further action. The resulting free kick went straight into Tom Vincent’s hands. In the 17th minute Andy Goddard received a yellow card for deliberate hand ball just outside the Green’s area with cries of

TAFC 2-1 Holmer Green frustration that play should have been allowed to continue as Tring were in possession. Tring won another free kick and resulting neat play saw Tony Fields cross to Vinnie who’s shot was well saved by the keeper for a corner. Tring were now on top and a sharp turn and shot from Ryan Redford was deflected for another corner. In the 28th minute Holmer won their first corner which was delt with well by Tring’s defence which were now working well as a unit. The first goal arrived in the 33rd minute when Dave Foskett fed a ball through to Vinnie. The defender closing him down slipped, giving Vinnie a clear run on goal and the inform striker bent his shot round the keeper into the goal. Tring were now pressing hard for a second goal. Ryan Redford went on a jinking run and the keeper saved his shot with his legs. In the 43rd minute the second goal finally came when another good run from Danny Gray, who cut inside and played the ball back, several players then missed the ball before Tony Fields picked it up and skilfully lobbed the keeper. Half Time 2-0. The second half began with Athletic dominating the game but failing to turn this pressure into more goals. Nick Jackson and Ryan Redford were tormenting the away defence but the final ball was just not connecting. Ryan Redford showed his great determination in winning the ball out on the right and from his cross Vinnie just missed scoring his second. A deep cross from Dave Foskett was met by Nick Jackson, but his effort went just over. In the 75th Minute Holmer won a free kick for hand ball. The resulting shot came off Tom Vincent and Andy Shed fired in for a goal to the away side. This gave Green some confidence and they hit the bar just after following a corner. Ryan Redford had one more effort which went just wide before he was replaced by Andy Mullins making his first appearance since being injured last season. The game was played out with out much action for another win for Tring, making it 9 straight wins this season. Team T.Vincent, D.Foskett, R.Duncan, B.Osborne, S.Smith, B.Court, N.Jackson, T.Fields, V.Iannone, R.Redford,-[Aa.Mullins] D.Gray[A.Addison] Subs not used M.Underwood, S.Ashby, Dean Hutchinson.

TAFC Reserves An excellent win for the reserves against Harpenden Town to get their first victory of the season. The first half hour was a fairly even affair with few clear cut chances but Tring took the lead just before the break . Max Machen put a teasing cross in from the right and Ollie Ruttle nodded in clinically at the near post. (bottom left) Ten minutes into the second period Tring doubled the lead. After a good passing move involving many of last seasons u16s, a low cross from the left just evaded Ruttle but Max Machen was on hand to finish confidently on his senior debut (bottom right) Harpenden continued to threaten and look dangerous going forward but this left some holes in their defensive lines which we looked to exploit. Tring made the game seemingly safe midway through the second half. A deep free kick from the right was headed back across the six yard box by Max Dechamps finding an unmarked Ollie Ruttle to finish from close range. 3-0. With around 15 minutes to play Harpenden hit us on the counter attack and pulled a goal back. 31. With just over 5 minutes left, the visitors were rightly awarded a penalty for handball. George Saunders in the Athletic goal stood his ground as the ball drifted over the bar and into the rugby ground. A let off for the lads which could have set up a nervy final period. There followed chances for both teams, Charlie Hendry-Smith shot wide and Saunders saved well at the other end but no further goals were added. The final whistle blew and three points were well and truly earned. With a few players missing for various reasons today, the squad stepped up giving Michael Churchill some nice selection headaches ahead of the cup match at Buntingford next Saturday. Highlights of the game can be found on page 8 of today’s programme.
