Grassroots Talk
Good afternoon & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium for the visit of London Colney. We welcome their players, officials and supporters and wish them a safe journey home afterwards. You will have noticed a different style front cover to our programme this afternoon. Today’s sponsor is Brian Lovell and he holds a collection at a match each year raising funds for and awareness of, Samaritans in memory of his son and former Tring Athletic player Matt. The first team are back in action on Tuesday away at Hadley before we host Flackwell Heath next weekend here at the Grass Roots Stadium. Our reserves play away this afternoon at Buntingford in the league and are starting to pick up points with improved performances. An honourable mention to Lewis Dwight who ran the London Marathon last weekend in 3hours 55 mins raising over £2,000 for his chosen charity. We wait to see if his legs have recovered in time for today! We will be hosting some social evenings at the club in the coming months starting tonight with a free pool & darts night . Match Report Saturday 2nd October 2021 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Crawley Green 3-3 Tring Athletic Mistakes at the start and end of this game denied us our first three points of the season and an opportunity to move off the bottom of the table. Overall this was a good performance especially in the first half but a loss of concentration cost us the win. The players minds must have still been in the changing rooms and the few supporters at the game were still finding their seats in the stand when we conceded a penalty after only 21 seconds which Taylor Rhiney confidently dispatched. Score 1-0. Not a great start but fortunately we struck back within 2 minutes when Kieran Turner smacked home a stunning 35 yarder to level the scores. It was a terrific response and just what we needed from our skipper who capped a fine game by playing a big part in our other 2 goals. Surprisingly it was his first goal of the season but hopefully many more will follow now he has broken the ice. Score 1-1. Spurred on by the goal we started to play the ball around nicely on the artificial turf unperturbed by the heavy rain and the planes flying by overhead from Luton airport. We certainly dominated possession although we had to rely on Dave Saunders tipping a shot from Lewis Osbourne onto the post to keep us from falling behind again. In the 17th minute Harrison Cornick, who is shaping up to be a very good player, won the ball fairly off Charlie Clayton and laid it off to Kieran Turner who found Cameron Brooks on the left. Cameron stormed into the box and although his first shot was saved by keeper Mark Blower he was up quickly to stab home the loose ball. Cameron was another to open his account for the season and It put us deservedly in front. Score 1-2. Unfortunately Charlie Clayton injured his knee in the incident and was replaced by Jake Tabor and we hope he makes a speedy recovery. We continued to control the game without creating too many chances although some good play by Manny Gbejuade presented Cameron Brooks with an opening but his shot went just wide of the far post. So after a terrible start we recovered well to put our noses in front. Half Time Score 1 – 2.
Crawley Green 3-3 TAFC Our hosts started the second half on the front foot and drew level just before the hour mark with Taylor Rhiney firing across Dave Saunders into the far corner. Score 2-2. It was undoubtedly a set back and our opponents started to look more threatening and more goals looked on the cards which was unsurprising as the 8 previous games had produced 37 of them. The game was now evenly balanced but in the 80th minutes we were presented with a golden opportunity to take the initiative when Kieran Turner latched onto a long pass from Cameron Brooks but was taken out by the keeper for a penalty. Chris Blunden stepped up to convert the spot kick to put us back in front. Score 2-3. With just 10 minutes plus added time left and with Green reduced to 10 players in the 86th minute after their right back Adam Hughes was sin binned we should have comfortably held on for the win but again a lack of concentration and poor game management proved to be costly when we gave another penalty away in the first minute of added time. Taylor Rhiney scored to level the scores and claim his hat-trick. Full Time Score 3 – 3 A disappointing result but there were some positives to take away from the game. We did very well to come back and score 3 goals after a very early set back and we did play some very attractive football. We are still in touching distance of the teams above us and we only need a change in fortunes before we start climbing the table. After the game George Bogdan made Kieran Turner his MOM and I wouldn’t disagree with his choice. Our opponents London Colney Football Club was formed in 1907, playing at Whitehorse Lane until moving to its present ground at Cotlandswick, London Colney in 1976. The Club played in the Mid Herts League until the mid-fifties, when it joined the Herts County League. The Club has enjoyed many successes over the years with the 1st team winning the Premier Division League 3 times between 1986 and 1990, and the reserves winning the Reserve Division 4 times between 1987 and 1992. In 1992 the Club moved to the South Midlands League where in the first season the 1st Team became runners up in the Senior Division and the Reserves won the Division 1 Reserves section. Further successes came between 1993 and 1998 with the 1st Team winning The O, Brian Butcher Challenge Cup, The Herts Charity Shield, The Herts Centenary Trophy, The Premier Division Cup, and gaining promotion to the Premier Division. The Reserves also did well during this time and in 1998 won The Reserves Challenge Trophy. In the 1998/99 season, the South Midlands League amalgamated with the Spartan League to form the Minerva Spartan South Midlands League and London Colney finished 3rd in the Premier Division. The Blue Boys had the title within their grasp after a brilliant 11 match winning streak between October and December and they remained in the top two throughout the final weeks of the season only to be pipped at the post on the final day of the season by Barkingside and Potters Bar Town. This disappointment was eased a few days later when they beat Hoddesdon Town 1-0 to win the Herts Charity Shield. The Reserves had a brilliant season winning the Reserve League and the reserved cup comfortably. This was also the year that The Spartan South Midlands League Management committee made first Team Manager Mick Wright Manager of the Year for the 1998/99 season. The 1999/2000 season saw Malcolm Doctor join Mick Wright as a joint manager of the 1st Team. They were finalists in both the Challenge Trophy and the Premier Division Cup only being beaten in penalty shoot outs in both matches. This year London Colney was once again a competitor in the FA Vase and reached the last sixteen losing 4-3 to Eccles Hill United who travelled from Yorkshire for the match.
London Colney The 2000/2001 season saw the 1st Team finishing runners up in the League. The reserves finished a creditable 6th in the reserve division. In the 2001/2002 season, London Colney saw its greatest successes yet with the 1st Team winning the League with a ten-point difference as the highest in the league's history. We lost only two games; scored a massive 119 goals; had a goal difference of 87 after going unbeaten for the first 27 league games. We went top after just three games and maintained domination apart from a few days in December, won 28 of our 38 games, and provided the leagues leading scorer through Gary Sippetts who bagged an incredible 45 strikes. London Colney were also runners up in the Herts Senior Trophy, the only team in the league to ever reach that position, only narrowly losing to Borehamwood 3-2 in a very hard-fought match. We also won the Challenge Trophy and were semi-finalists in the Premier Division Cup. These achievements were rewarded with our Managers, Malcolm Doctor and Mick Wright being awarded the Managers of the Year Trophy. The 2002/03 season what a difference a year makes whilst not expecting the same successes as the previous season the loss of many of our players to other clubs meant a disastrous start to the season. We then lost Malcolm Doctor who resigned early in the season. However thanks to John Templeton stepping into the breach to join Mick we managed to finish the season a creditable 6th in the league. Our reserves were an academy side and whilst their footballing skills were undisputed and they won the league and were finalists in the reserved cup, they contributed little to the well-being and spirit of London Colney Football Club. 2003/04 season saw several of our players returning to the club and with an optimistic outlook and a great deal of enthusiasm. The first team management remained the same with Mick Wright and John Templeton at the helm. The reserves have reverted to a normal club side with Ray Flanagan and Alan Connell in charge. The first team finished 6th in the league and were finalists in the Challenge Trophy losing to Brook House on penalties after extra time. The reserves finished in the bottom half of the reserve division, which was commendable as it was the first season with Ray and Alan in charge.
2004/05 saw Mick Wright stepping down as Manager leaving John Templeton in sole charge. After a very good start, when we won 7 league games in a row, we seemed to lose our way and finished a disappointing 11th in the league. However, we faired better in the Challenge Trophy and were finalists but were well beaten by Hillingdon Borough 4 -1 on the night.
London Colney .. continued 2005/06 season saw a new Management Team of Nigel Tester, Kevin Bland, and Vince Buck without much success with the 1st Team finishing 14th in the league but having a good FA Vase Cup run. The reserves finished third under the management of Mark Tyrell and Gary Barber. 2006/2007 We started the season with a new management team but it was decided that for the long term good of the club we would have to part company with the new manager before the end of the season. The 1st team finished mid-table and had an early exit in all major cup competitions. In contrast, the Reserves, under the guidance of Manager Mark Tyrrell, had a brilliant season by winning the league on the last game of the season and also winning the Reserve Challenge Cup beating WGC Reserves from a division above. They were also the losing finalists in the Herts Intermediate Cup. 2007/2008 London Colney FC Centenary Year. Saw the club relegated from the Premier League for the first time we now start the next century of the club trying to get back to Premier SSMFL Premier status. 2008/2009 saw additional committee members joining a new management team of Julian Robinson as Manager with Frank Patrick as his assistant with most of the young squad retained with a couple of new faces to begin the season in Division One and begin a period of stability with steady consolidation of a club that had shared it near past of turmoil with near extinction a possibility. 2009/10 After what seemed an endless season due to fixture congestion and the weather being so inclement the club had a tremendous campaign, albeit after the disappointment of losing out by 1 point for one of the promotion places leaving everyone at the club deflated for a while until we reflected on two cup final victories and one losing 9-10 on pens in the other. The first team with a third-place finish in the MSSML Div One good cup runs in the FA and Vase competitions, the reserves having a tremendous season finishing second in Div Two, The A team won the Bingham Cup and finished runners up in the other cup final and finally the U18s winning the league and cup double. 2010/11 A management team of Dave Townsend and Frank Patrick were quickly invited into the hot seat following the departure of Julian Robinson to Tring Athletic to try and stabilize the club once more and push for honours, following early disappointing results the team was unable to reach the promotion spots to remain in the division although a Hertfordshire Charity Shield Final saw the Blueboys lose against Premier side Leverstock Green.
London Colney 2011/12 Following the disappointment of staying in Division One a new management team of Ryan Thompson, Chris Day, and Tony Kavanagh were brought in to bring fresh impetus into the club. The season went from strength to strength with promotion to the premier division gained by a record 15 points with top scorer Matty Newman hitting the 50 goal mark over all competitions, with the young reserve side finishing a creditable mid-table. Season 2012/13 saw the side finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division consolidating the improvement under Ryan Thompson's guidance this after a season of unprecedented injuries leaving the squad sadly depleted of up to 10 first-team players for most of the season. Season 2013/14 Saw the side again finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division in what would be Ryan Thompsons last season as manager. After a slow start, the team had a good middle and end to the campaign climbing up the table in the process. Matt Newman also departed scoring 32 goals in his final season with the Blueboys, backed up well by Martin Collins with 17 goals. 2014/15 had seen the start of a new era with Jim Nicholls and his coaching staff at the helm. However, due to work commitments, Jim became Chairman and Ryan Thompson came back as first-team manager. The club went on a remarkable unbeaten streak during the second half of the season, narrowly missing out on the title by finishing second to Kings Langley. 2016/17 saw the club bring in Joe Sweeney and his team from Chesham. An excellent start to the season meant that the Blueboys went straight to the top of the table, and remained there until the end of the season becoming the Spartan Premier Division champions. The Reserve team also won the Suburban league table to make it a double to remember. The powers that be decided to refuse promotion to the Ryman’s League Division 1 which meant 2nd place Hertford Town gained promotion instead. Manager Joe Sweeney and almost all the promotion-winning squad left the club after this decision for pastures new. The board also decided they no longer wanted to carry on running the club so unless a new board could be found quickly the club would fold with immediate effect. 2017/18 saw a new consortium headed up by Chairman Gareth Davies along with former Peterborough, Watford and Birmingham centre forward Ken Charlery agreeing to become the new custodians of the club which was perilously close to folding. The season started brightly with the Blueboys top of the league after the first 6 games which were a remarkable achievement considering the club had no players with less than 4 weeks to go until the season started. With a very young inexperienced squad (no less than nine under 19s) the early pace could not be maintained and the club finished the season in 13th place while also reaching the semi-final of the League cup before going out to Risborough

Risborough Rangers and Aylesbury Vale Dynamos both hit five on the road in the Premier Division. Northampton Sileby Rangers and Long Crendon serve up a nine goal thriller. Shefford Town & Campton record the SSML’s only success in opening round of the Beds Senior Trophy.Saturday brought about 97 goals from the 23 games (an average of 4.22 per game) with Jake Baldwin (Aylesbury Vale Dynamos), Taylor Rhiney (Crawley Green), Liam Enver-Marum (Risborough Rangers), James Hawkes (Long Crendon), Dan Lyons (Northampton Sileby Rangers), Kyle Faulkner (Buckingham Athletic), Jonathan McNamara (Shefford Town & Campton) and Brandon Carney (The 61FC (Luton)) all netting hat-tricks. Premier Division Leighton Town remain top of the standings following a 2-1 win at Flackwell Heath watched by the day’s biggest crowd of 144. Two of Bedfordshire clubs rivals for the title faced each other and the game was witnessed by Mike Taylor who pens the following report A very wet afternoon at Arkley found two of the premier division’s championship contenders come face to face, records could and would be broken…but for the first 10 minutes or so most of the traffic headed towards the visitors defence who displayed a determined resilience. However Risbros’ record of 39 league games undefeated (including Hellenic results) could not be understated and sure enough the visitors began to push Hadley back, using the wings to full advantage. On 22 minutes more fast wing play down the left, a driven cross and whack the ball was in the back of the Hadley net before the defenders could muster a challenge. If that was a fine bit of play then the sumptuous volley that followed on 27th minutes was worth the soaking on its own. Another Risborough effort on 33mins was ruled out for offside, the rain was relentless, but clearly the visitors were ‘tanked up’ for the second 45 mins. In truth Hadley rarely threatened the visitors, who pushed forward at every opportunity. The 3rd goal arrived when a Hadley defender was robbed and another fine shot smacked the back of the net. As puddles formed, the Hadley defence found great difficulty in clearing the ball and were punished once again with a clumsy challenge just in the box, Risbro’ grabbed the opportunity to make it 4-0 and then on 75mins the visitors pounced on a rebound and 5-0 underlined the emphatic result. Truth be told the damage could have been worse. The entertainment didn’t finish there as Assistant Reid took a ‘splashing dive’ along the touchline…5.5 for that!!! Yes, the laundry person would be busy washing the sodden kit, Hadley, to their credit, took the defeat on the chin, and I’m sure that Risboro’ travelled home smiling about their 40 league games now undefeated, ’fuelled-up,’ pumped-up’ and leaving their hosts ‘Shell-shocked’…..sorry!!! At the other end of the table Baldock Town moved out of the drop zone with an odd goal in three win at Ardley United while dropping into the red zone are Oxhey Jets after being beaten 1-2 by hosts London Colney. Bottom club Tring Athletic picked up a useful point on their travels with a 3-3 draw at Crawley Green. Elsewhere Arlesey Town suffered a narrow home defeat when Leverstock Green came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 while New Salamis saw off the challenge of visiting Milton Keynes Irish 2-0 to move up to seventh. The day’s other Premier Division action saw Aylesbury Vale Dynamos win 5-0 at Broadfields United in front of their watching new manager Steve Bateman.

Division One Division One leaders Stotfold saw their 100% league record extinguished at Thame United Reserves, the hosts netting twice without reply to climb to fourth place. Third placed Wellingborough Whitworth enjoyed a 5-1 win on the road at Letchworth Garden City Eagles while Northampton Sileby Rangers remain fifth after edging out visiting Long Crendon by the odd goal in a nine goal thriller. At the other end of the table Penn & Tylers Green moved out of the bottom three after obtaining a point at Rushden & Higham United with a 2-2 draw. Winslow United made it four wins from their five league outings to date with a 4-0 success at Raunds Town while the day’s other Division One fixture saw Buckingham Athletic defeat visiting Irchester United 3-0 with Kyle Faulkner netting a hat-trick for the second successive Saturday. Beds Senior Trophy It was a bad day for SSML teams in the First Round of the Beds Senior Trophy, with five of our clubs taking part in the opening Round of the competition with had just one winner and that was guaranteed as it was an all SSML tie. Shefford Town & Campton were the successful club following a 4-0 win at Ampthill Town while the other three ties saw the Beds County League sides complete a hat-trick. Bedford going down 2-3 at home against Marston Shelton Rovers while Division Two sides The 61FC (Luton) and Totternhoe bowed out against Biggleswade FC Reserves and Sharnbrook respectively. Division Two Old Bradwell United remain as table toppers following their hard fought 2-1 win at fourth placed Pitstone & Ivinghoe, the lead at the top now three points after second placed New Bradwell St Peter were held to a 2-2 draw at Berkhamsted Raiders, the hosts recovering from being 0-2 down to claim a point. Aston Clinton made it three wins from their last three games as they swept aside visiting new boys Milton Keynes College Football Academy 5-1 while Bovingdon squeezed past Tring Corinthians AFC on their travels with a solitary goal success. Eynesbury United battled out a 2-2 draw at home against Berkhamsted Comrades while the day’s other fixture between Risborough Rangers Development and Buckingham United was abandoned at the interval due to the pitch being waterlogged following the heavy rain. On This Day—9th October 2010 Three points picked up and a clean sheet was a good return from this match but aesthetically the performance was below the levels we have produced so far this season. After suffering our first League defeat at Oxhey Jets on Tuesday night we can be delighted to have bounced back straight away and we can take solace from an old football adage that says it takes a good team to win when they are not at their best.
We can thank Vinnie Iannone and Ryan Redford for the second half goals that clinched the victory, the prolific duo now share 24 goals between them with hopefully lots more to follow. Goalkeeper Tom Vincent also had a significant say in the outcome with two outstanding saves to claim our third clean sheet of the campaign. But it would be wrong to attribute this win solely to the efforts of three players as the rest of the team played their part as well. Even though the usual fluency was missing the players still worked hard for each other and were prepared to battle against a good Hatfield Town side. The visitors looked worthier than their ninth place in the table at the start of play and they provided tough opposition. Hatfield looked more than capable of getting some points but were let down by the crazy antics of one of their players which resulted in them having to play for an hour with 10 players. Hatfield midfielder Jason Beck was yellow carded for a foul on Matt Myatt in the 21st minute but instead of taking it on the chin and getting on with the game he lost his cool and it was no surprise when he received a second yellow card 13 minutes later for a high tackle on Bret Court and was duly sent off. Unfortunately he refused to go quietly and what followed was unsavoury and unnecessary. Unfortunately the dismissal also had a negative effect on the game which became fractious and tetchy and the Referee had to be on his toes to keep control. Up that point Hatfield had been the better side with their two strikers Terry Caswell and Matthew Standen looking sharp. Chances were few but Standen put his pace to good use down the left wing and he sent over some good crosses which fortunately for us were not taken advantage of. We were competing well for possession but failed to trouble too greatly the formidable centre back paring of John McCrandles and Daniel Staples. But as the half wore on we started to take the game to the visitors and Vinnie Iannone shot over from the edge of the area after he linked up well with Tony Fields. Later Ryan Redford slipped an inviting pass into the path of Rob Duncan as he ran into the area but he fired a left foot shot over. But the best chance of the half fell to Terry Caswell when he seized on a terrible defensive mistake but Tom Vincent rescued us by grabbing the ball as the Hatfield centre forward tried to dribble around him. But half time was reached with no goals.
TAFC 2-0 Hatfield Town Despite being a man down the visitors started the second period on the front foot as we struggled to get going. Carl Webb did well to get down the left wing but his inviting cross was volleyed well wide by Terry Caswell. Manager Phil Casserley decided it was time to ring in some changes and he brought on Club Skipper Graham Hall for Matt Myatt who had worked hard in the centre of midfield. Almost immediately Graham, just returning from injury, was caught by a late challenge from Bruce Tahon and then had to go off injured again having lasted a mere 17 minutes to be replaced by Billy Osborne. Hall is key figure for us in midfield and we will be praying the injury is not too serious. Four minutes past the hour we produced a decent move and Vinnie Iannone was on hand to convert a ball fired into the area by fellow striker Ryan Redford to make the score 1-0. Both sides made changes and Hatfield were not about to give up and they still looked capable of getting at least a point. It was nip and tuck as both sides competed for every ball and with four minutes to go Hatfield won a corner and a chance to get the all important equaliser. Their keeper Sam Lacey decided to join his colleagues, which seemed a rash decision because he didn’t actually get into the box. He was made to pay when the ball was cleared to Ryan Redford who decided to shoot from inside his own half. There was an agonising wait for our supporters as the ball gently rolled towards the goal which was followed by a loud and relieved cheer when it finally reached the net to give us a commanding 2-0 lead with just a few minutes remaining on the clock. Right on time Terry Caswell found himself through on goal again but as with his first attempt he was robbed by Tom Vincent as he tried to dribble around him. That was the last action of any note and the final whistle signalled a 2-0 win for us. This was a tough match against a good opponent and Hatfield must be disappointed that some indiscipline cost them the chance of getting something from this game. This win continues our 100% record against Hatfield with five wins from five games and only two goals conceded.
