About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm. We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we

have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Today’s Visitors CLUB HISTORY Leverstock Green Football Club was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th 1896 in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers. The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Kings Langley and Potten End. The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timber-built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960’s by the existing brick built clubhouse and changing rooms. On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Club’s landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold. The club remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League. By the mid 1970’s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail and the installation of training lights. The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years. In 1991 the Club were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners-up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council.

Leverstock Green Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09. Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best ever run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United. The club has twice reached the Third Round of the FA Vase, in seasons 2006/07 and 2018/19. Leverstock Green entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers. County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runners-up four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road. Between 2005 and 2015 the club ran a successful Ladies’ Team, which rose from the Beds and Herts League into the Eastern Region Womens League, reaching the Premier Division in 2013.

The under-18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non-league pyramid include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner-Eley (Royston Town, St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England non-league side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player.

Leverstock Green The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed. Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long-serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day. Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe midtable finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid-19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end. For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks has been appointed. The club has increased its commitment to youth development by joining the Eastern Junior Alliance and will be running an under-15 side this season. Three club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was long-serving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Brian stood down from his role as secretary in 2020, having twice been honoured with awards from the Spartan South Midlands League.

At the bottom Tring Athletic recorded back to back league wins for the first time this season when defeating their visitors the high flying Hadley by the odd goal in three, the winner coning late in the game while Baldock Town drew 1-1 at home with fellow strugglers Holmer Green and bottom club Crawley Green were beaten 0-2 at Harefield United. Elsewhere Flackwell Heath won by a solitary goal at London Colney while Arlesey Town drew 1-1 at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. The day’s other fixture saw Harpenden Town travel to local rivals Oxhey Jets and return with the full quota of points after a 3-0 win. DIVISION ONE Division One table toppers Stotfold maintained their one point lead at the top with a 2-0 win at Amersham Town while a last minute goal was enough for second placed Winslow United to defeat visiting Bedford. Third placed Ampthill Town lost ground on the leading two as they were held to a 1-1 at Buckingham Athletic (more on this one later in these ramblings). At the other end of the standings bottom club Irchester United recorded their second league win of the campaign with a 5-1 success at Kidlington Reserves to move to a point behind the club immediately above them Burton Park Wanderers who suffered a 1-9 defeat at the ever improving Shefford Town & Campton. Elsewhere Long Crendon remained very much in the battle for the play-off places with a 2-1 home win over one of their rivals Northampton Sileby Rangers while Wellingborough Whitworth are also in the race for the promotion play-offs following their 3-1 success against visiting Thame United Reserves. The day’s remaining Division One action saw London Tigers pick up a useful point with a 1-1 draw at Letchworth Garden City Eagles while Langford enjoyed a 3-0 success at Rushden & Higham United.

DIVISION TWO The big game in Division Two saw the top facing each other and it was no surprise the game finished even, hosts and leaders Old Bradwell United fell behind to a 89th minute penalty before levelling in the 98th minute to deny second placed Bovingdon closing the five point gap at the top, the OBU goal being scored by Tommy Cooke, his 100th for the club. Third placed Eynesbury United got back to winning ways after going three games without a win with a 3-1 success at home against Berkhamsted Raiders. At the bottom Tring Corinthians AFC entertained The 61FC (Luton) and the sides battled out a goalless draw, the point for the visitors enabled them to climb to third from bottom at the expense of Buckingham United who were beaten 0-3 at home by improving Codicote. Elsewhere Risborough Rangers Development were held 3-3 by visiting Milton Keynes College Football Academy, the hosts led 3-0 at one stage while Aston Clinton continued their recent good form with a 2-0 success at New Bradwell St Peter. COMMITTEE AWAYDAYS Bob Flight was at Buckingham Athletic and sends the following report:Old rivals Buckingham Athletic and Ampthill Town met at Stratford Fields and in an entertaining match and each finished with a point apiece. In an even first half, it was Athletic that had the best chances and only two excellent saves from the Town keeper Ross Tomkins ensured that Town survived the half without conceding a goal. In the second half Town began to dominate and an early chance flew over the home bar. But Athletic also had a good chance and this was once again well saved by Tomkins. The first goal came as a bit of a surprise to the watching crowd as a long clearance from the home penalty area caught the Town defenders flat footed which allowed Oliver Power to streak clear and score past a stranded Tomkins on 54 minutes. Town pressed for the equaliser and only a good save from the

home keeper kept them out. Another effort was somehow missed by Glenn Cooksley who hooked his shot over the bar when it seemed easier to score. However, the equalising goal was not long in coming and when following a free kick, the ball fell to Tom Beasley, he smashed the ball into the Athletic net on 65 minutes. The final quarter of the game saw the play swing from end to end with Town having the best of it but they failed to trouble the home goal. Both teams used their substitutes in an effort to secure the win but the game petered out to a draw which was about the right result on the day. The draw does not really help Ampthill in their quest for promotion but suited Athletic who played the match with several youngsters in the side. AND FINALLY Remember SSML football can seriously damage your health especially match officials as the Tweet of the Day goes to Aylesbury Vale Dynamos for this gem at the weekend – 60’ Asst Referee down injured after a great challenge by Stapleton !!! The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 285 votes cast is:Tring Athletic 46.3% Shefford Town & Campton 35.8% Irchester United 9.8% Tring Corinthians AFC 8.1%

On This Day—15th February 2011 Hat-tricks are proving to be like busses for the Club, after going all season without any we get 2 on the trot. Ryan Redford set the ball rolling on Saturday and not wishing to be outdone Nick Jackson emulated him in this Tuesday night game. All his goals came in the second half and 2 were pure class. Jacko’s first was crucial as it came 6 minutes after Met Police had equalised and looking dangerous. It owed much to an unfortunate error from former Athletic keeper Gary White, who had a good game but was unable to keep hold of Andy Mullins cross and Jacko was on hand to head home to make the score 2-1. His second, and our third, goal came 10 minutes from time and the ease in which he took it was sublime. Picking up a Graham Hall pass in the area he turned inside his marker and then nonchalantly found the top corner of the net with a sweetly struck shot. His final piece de resistance arrived in the 92nd minute and was an exquisitely struck volley from a Paul Jeffrey’s cross following the full backs burst down the left wing. It took his tally to 19 goals for the season, just 4 goals behind leading scorer Ryan Redford. Phil Casserley decided to field a strong line up with keeper Keith Eldridge coming in for his first start of the season and new signing Gary Dixon nearly marking his debut up front with a goal. It was just as well we didn’t send out a weakened side because Met Police played well and made us work hard for our victory. Our guests play in the Premier Division of the Herts Senior County League and found themselves a goal behind after just 5 minutes when Danny Gray’s well placed shot found the bottom corner of the net following a super move also involving Gary Dixon and Graham Hall. After a difficult period for Danny is was great to see him back on the score sheet with his 2nd goal of the season.

TAFC 4-1 Met Policy Bushey But the visitors didn’t roll over, they came back strongly and nearly equalised 10 minutes later when Dean Collins terrific long range shot was tipped onto the bar by Keith Eldridge. Dale Archer fired well wide after a quick break by Met Police and for us Nick Jackson found himself in acres of space from a quick throw on, his shot being pushed around the post by Gary White. The ease in which Gary Dixon and Nick Jackson linked up augers well for the future and after a nice piece of interplay between the two, Jacko was prevented from scoring by a tremendous tackle from Jamey Derby. It was an open game and Met Police played some very attractive football and looked a very accomplished team. Josiah Hunte had a great opportunity to level the scores when a free kick eventually came to him at the far post but he sliced his effort wide. The visitors came even closer in the 38th minute when centre half and skipper Dan Boyd headed a corner past Keith Eldridge but the ball was cleared off the line. Henry Thomas found himself in a similar position at the other end but he headed a good chance just wide. An entertaining half came to a close with us holding a 1-0 lead but there was enough goal mouth action to indicate that further goals would follow in the second half.

TAFC 4-1 Met Policy Bushey In the 56th minute Dan Boyd had a scoring chance from a cross but he failed to make good contact with the ball but his colleague Josiah Hunte did much better a minute later when he rifled home a great shot from the edge of the area to make the score 1-1. The opportunity came from a nicely worked move which typified Met Police approach to the game.

The visitors were right back in the game and we knew we had to dig in until Nick Jackson was handed an easy goal to put us back in front in the 63rd minute. After that the visitors started to tire and chances were now coming our way with Gary Dixon going close on 3 occasions. Jacko’s 2 late goals sealed the win and Andy Humphreys also got on the score sheet only to be denied by the linesman’s flag. Full Time: Tring Athletic

The plaudits go to Nick Jackson for his hat-trick but this was a good team performance, the side grew stronger as the game progressed against a good side that would hold its own in the South Midlands League. In the semi- final we will entertain either Hemel Hempstead Town or Berkhamsted Town. This is an intriguing prospect and offers the opportunity for us to pick up this trophy for the 5th time. We have not excelled in the cups this season so it would be nice to progress in this competition and have a final to look forward to. The only disappointment from the game was the first half injury to Billy Osborne, we hope it's not too serious and that he back playing again soon.
