About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm. We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we

have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Grassroots Talk

Good afternoon & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium for the visit of New Salamis. We welcome their players, officials and supporters and wish them a safe journey home afterwards. Our visitors sit second in the league coming into today’s game just a point behind Risborough Rangers but having played two games more. New Salamis are unbeaten in the league in 2022 so this will be another good test for our young side who have also been on a good run of form. It is nice to be looking at the table now at who we can catch rather than worrying about who may catch us. I’m sure Sturge & the management team won’t relax and will be wanting to push on with a strong end to the season with half an eye on a top half finish (no pressure lads!) Our match sponsors today are NP Electrics who have been our reserve team sponsor for a number of years. We would like to thank Nicky Petrou & his team for their ongoing support. Find out more about them on page 37. We still have match sponsorship availability on three remaining game (see page 13) including Ardley United & Risborough Rangers, so please speak to Graham Bright if you are interested. If you are able to volunteer for the club on a regular basis or even just occasionally please speak to a committee member. We are always grateful for extra support.

Today’s Visitors—New Salamis Club History New Salamis FC were formed in 1971 by fans of Cypriot club Nea Salamis Famagusta, with the Cypriot based club acting as a parent club to their fans in the UK. Playing in the KOPA (Cypriot Football League) a British League set-up for Cypriots in London, the club won countless honors and left the league in season 2017/18 as the league's most successful team, winning 12 League Titles. The club also won a record 7 London County Cups. In the 2015/16 season the club won the FA Sunday Cup, following a 1-1 draw with Barnes at Selhurst Park and winning on penalties. In 2016/17 the club lost to Hardwick Social Club on penalties again following a 1-1 draw at Brammall Lane. Many of the players still play for the team today. In 2018/19 we moved into the Herts County Senior League, playing our matches at Enfield Town FC. In our first season we won the prestigious Aubrey Cup Final, and also achieved promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League, after finishing runners-up. Season 2019/20 saw us participate in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One at Step 6, our ambition to achieve promotion to Step 5. In March 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, we sat top of the certain of a top four finish and promotion. We also were the top scorers in all top 10 Divisions as the season was null and void. Last season saw the team reach the first round of the FA Cup, in our first season, and when the season was curtailed in November , we had managed to amass enough points to be promoted to the Premier Division on points per game over two seasons, this season sees a new chapter.

On This Day—12th March 2016 TEENAGE COLLEAGUES RESCUE SAM'S DAY Stalwart Sam Joliffe achieved the milestone of clocking up his 200th game for the club on Saturday and was able to celebrate the occasion with a win thanks to the contribution of two teenage colleagues. Goals from 17 year old Ben Seaton and a last gasp winner from 19 year old Jay Caines sealed a fortuitous win over Harefield United who will feel aggrieved that they left Tring empty handed in their fight to avoid relegation. Sam has been a regular and important member of the First Team for the last five seasons and again leads the way with most appearances this term. Still only 25 he plays a key role from his central midfield position in screening the defence whilst chipping in with some goals, seven this season so far. The win capped a good week for us, picking up seven points from three games, but this was a stuttering performance which lacked our usual sharpness and fluency. We started well, Kieran Turner nearly picked out Ryan Sturges in the area who was denied a scoring opportunity by a timely intervention from a Hares defender then Sam Joliffe nearly capped a fine bi-centennial day with a powerful header from a corner but it cleared the bar. Our best moves had Kieran Turner at the heart of them and in the 12th minute he won the ball then cleverly chipped it to the far post where Jay Caines was waiting unmarked, but the cross was just a tad too high for the youngster and he was unable to direct his header towards the empty net. The visitors focused their attack mainly through their giant centre forward Melford Simpson who proved to be a handful all afternoon. We had an early warning of his danger in the 10th minute when he neatly set up fellow forward Perry Dicker who was denied by a super save from keeper Matt Evans. The visitors had some tall players in their ranks and were a threat from set pieces and they put this advantage to effective use when Simpson headed home a well flighted corner in the 16th minute. Score 0-1.

TAFC 2-1 Harefield United Fortunately it only took four minutes for us to equalise, Ben Seaton's speculative long shot looked unlikely to cause any problems until it hit a divot and bounced past the startled keeper. It was a piece of good fortune which we gladly accepted whilst our opponents rightly cursed their bad luck. Score 1-1. We continued to have the better of the play and Kieran Turner's fine cross from a short corner was headed over by Dave O'Connor. But then we seemed to run aground, building nicely from the back but lacking the cutting edge to pierce our opponents defence. Despite enjoying more possession and territory we had failed to put any pressure on their keeper until shortly before half time when Kieran Turner's fierce shot forced him into a flying save. With their defensive game plan working the visitors started to grow in confidence as the half progressed and Matt Evans had to be alert to cut out a cross reaching Reece Chaudry at the far post and then right on half time he bravely cleared the ball off the toes of Simpson after a nice flick appeared to have played the big number 9 in. There was still time for Simpson to fire a good opportunity wide of the far post. After a promising start and seeing a lot of the ball we were probably more relieved to hear the half time whistle than our opponents. HT Score 1-1. We had a great opportunity to stamp our authority on the game within 40 seconds of the restart when a good move down the left ended with Kieran Turner setting up a great shooting opportunity for Ryan Sturges but he failed to get a clean connection. But after that the tone of the game changed with the visitors adopting a more attacking approach and for much of the second half the game was more evenly balanced. The visitors were now playing the better football and winning the second balls as we struggled to get our game going but with both defences on top neither side created any real clear cut chances. Late in the game we broke quickly from their corner and Kieran Turner laid the ball off to Jay Caines who forced a terrific save from Hares keeper Jacob Ballheimer. We then had to thank sub Ryan McMahon who produced a superb block to stop a goal bound shot. The game seemed to heading for a draw but there was a sting in the tail as the clock ticked round to 90 minutes. A goal kick was met by a firm header from Dave O'Connor and for the first time the Hares defence was caught flat footed. Jay Caines took full advantage to run through and calmly slot the ball past the keeper for a late dramatic winner. It was only his second start and it was a great time to grab his debut goal . FT Score 2-1.

This was not us at our best and Harefield will feel with some justification that they deserved at least a point. But although the performance was a little flat the victory was a reward for keeping going to the end and the 3 points pushed us up two places to eighth in the table. We will have to improve considerably before we entertain fourth placed Hertford Town on Tuesday but we had a number of key players missing and hopefully some of them will be back for this game.
