Tring Athletic v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 7.30pm Tuesday 29th September 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Match sponsor—B Smart Dry Cleaners

Grassroots Talk Good evening & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium. Tonight we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, wishing them an enjoyable evening and safe journey home afterwards. Neither side are coming into the match with strong form. Our visitors have picked up three points in the league beating Leverstock Green but are out of both national FA competitions, whereas our only taste of victory was a shoot out win in the FA Vase at Harefield. We now face Edgware on as Friday evening in London. As with most local derbies form usually goes out of the window but we hope for an entertaining match this evening under the lights. Speaking of lights, turn to page 21 for some good news. Today’s match sponsors are B Smart Dry Cleaners who have been looking after our kits this season and we would like to thank them for their support. We have availability on future games (see page 12) or you could choose to sponsor your favourite player for the season (page 11.) Our Commercial Manager Graham Bright has been busy securing sponsors for our four sides, but we’d love to have more local businesses supporting us here at Tring Athletic. Our match programme This is the second season of producing online only programmes and we hope to keep improving this offering as time goes on. This is a work in progress so please let us know what you think. If you click on any of the logos or adverts it should direct you straight to our sponsors websites. This also means we can bring you features such as match highlights at the click of a button. Covid Impact With a vast number of laws and guidelines affecting us both on and off the pitch, we can sometimes fall short of volunteers. If you are able to help the club on a regular basis or even just occasionally please speak to a committee member. We are always grateful for extra support. Away Days The next first team home game isn’t until 20th October. It is great to have travelling supporters coming with the first team, however if the reserves are at home please come down and cheer them along.

About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm. We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Match Report Sat 26th September 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Arlesey Town 3-2 TAFC First team On a blustery afternoon in Bedfordshire, the opening exchanges we fairly even with both teams looking to attack. Arlesey looped a headed onto the top of the bar after 5 minutes but Jonny Pitts had it covered. At the other end Joe Naylor looked lively and Daley in the home goal had to be on his toes after 7 minutes getting to the ball first as Naylor chased a through ball. Midway through the first half a Tring corner on the right was swung towards the far post, Olly Butler nodded it back across goal but Harrison Cornick could only head into the grateful keepers' arms. Will Foley hit a free kick from 25 yards out but it was a comfortable save for the Arlesey keeper. Tring took the lead on 38 minutes. Running down the left channel, Callum Shortt looked like he was going to take on the two covering defenders who were backing off. As he got to about 25 yards from goal, Callum produced a sumptuous chip which had the perfect trajectory to fly over the goalkeeper's head and find the back of the net. 0-1. As the old adage goes, you are always most vulnerable just after you've scored and it proved to be the case this afternoon as Arlesey equalised just two minutes later. Boyen Dimov struck from 25 yards and found the bottom corner beyond the diving Pitts. 1-1 With their tails up Arlesey kept pressing and were dominant for the remainder of the half. Their efforts were rewarded on 45 minutes after some nice build up play down the left hand side. Herculano Carvalho took aim from 25 yards, Paolo Bagatti stretched to block, but could only deflect the ball up and over Pitts in the Tring goal. 2-1. The home side still had a further chance before the break to add to their lead but Carvalho put his far post header just wide. Into the second period on the hour mark Prince Nimoh had a claim for a penalty turned down, with his heel appearing to have been clipped in the six yard box. Arlesey looked to have put the game out of reach on 64 minutes. Jalen Miller who had looked a threat all game, beat three Tring defenders down the right before crossing for Carvaho to score his second of the match from close range. 3-1 Kevin McManus headed wide from a corner and Gareth Terblanche whistled an effort narrowly past the post from 40 yards with the keeper beaten. The home side however continue to have more of the play and looked as if they would see the game out. We were given a glimmer of hope on 82 minutes when Prince Nimoh latched onto a through ball, touched it past the onrushing keeper before rolling the ball into an empty net. 3-2 In the remaining minutes, there were half chances at both ends but no further goals. Another game where we competed well, put in the effort but lacked consistency or quality especially in the final ball or finish.

One final note is to congratulate Olly Butler on his 250th TAFC appearance. Team: Jonny Pitts, Paolo Bagatti, Harrison Cornick, Kevin McManus, Olly Butler, Connor Blake (Gareth Terblanche) Connor Goodliffe (Will Salmon) Will Foley (Joe Chott) Prince Nimoh, Callum Shortt, Joe Naylor Subs not used: Keith Eldridge, Graham Clark

Our Opponents Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury.

in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, some 200 players being registered, this also including Stocklake Ladies. In 2000 four youth teams won league and cup honours, whilst the senior team went on to win the Aylesbury District Cup, the Field Shield and ADL Premier Division runners up.

At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard working committee fought hard to establish. Another award was gained for the match day programme in recognition of how much the club was developing. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006. Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. Former Chairman Bill

Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last 'level five' team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming 'Double Winners' Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league the 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions, but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm , supported by Paul Bonham , Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19 after ten seasons in the Southern League the club was relegated back to the South Midlands League after a difficult period for the club. Bedgrove Dynamos Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12's Aylesbury & District League (ADL), but went on to win the 13's & 14's league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona's trophy room. At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8's through to under 18's. In the last 20 seasons, across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times. In 2019 two became one when the sides almagated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football at the highest possible level.

Saturday 26th September Herts Senior County League—Division One Tring Athletic Res 2-1 Bovingdon Res Our visitors started brightly and on 9 minutes hit the bar with the ball coming down onto the line before being cleared to safety. George Saunders in the Tring goal made a couple of good saves shortly afterwards but was unable to prevent Bovingdon taking the lead after 30 minutes as Tring looked for an offside flag. 0-1 Just before half time Bovingdon came close to doubling their lead hitting the post from a free kick. Athletic drew level on 70 minutes when a Lorenzo Cross cross was deflected into his own net by a Bovingdon defender. 1-1 In the 82nd minutes George Hill went on a good run and crossed for Andy Humphreys who turned in the box and cooly slotted home 2-1. The result puts the reserves up to 6th in the league and a trip to second placed Evergreen next Saturday.

On This Day 29th September 2018 - TAFC 1-0 Potten Utd Anyone who believes in astrology would probably have guessed that this was going to be Luke Dunstan's day. After all he was given the Captains arm band, his Mum and Dad sponsored the game and his cute nephew was the mascot so it was written in the stars! Luke's intervention late in the game continued our excellent run of form which saw us win all 6 games in September. It keeps us in 2nd place behind Biggleswade FC who jumped above us following their 3-1 win over Baldock Town in midweek. Recently we have been banging in the goals but on Saturday we had to dig in and show some character because Potton were a tough outfit and they probably felt, with some justification, that they deserved a point if not three. We were far from being at our best but a lot of credit must go to our opponents who battled for everything and knocked us out of our stride. We believe this was the first ever competitive encounter between our 2 clubs following their transfer over to the South Midlands after finishing runners-up last season in the United Counties League Division 1. They started the season well winning 4 of their opening 7 games including a 3-1 win at Biggleswade FC, the only blemish on the latter's league record so far. However, their results had dipped dramatically since that bright opening with 5 consecutive defeats.. We started well enough and had a great chance to take the lead after only 7 minutes when Tommy Twelves fine pass dissected the visitors defence to send Kieran Turner through on goal. A betting man would have put money on our leading marksman finishing off the job but Potton's keeper Tyler Josephs stood his ground and made a fine save. Soon afterwards Luke Dunstan went on one of his trade mark runs into the area but his tantalising cross was cleared. In the opening stages the visitors defence looked a little square and Kieran did manage to score but was flagged offside. After that early uncertainty Potton tightened up at the back and they started to defend well. Their winger Danny Webb made some inroads down the right and Connor Sansom had to be sharp to whip the ball off his toes after one promising run into the box. Later Webb produced a dangerous cross that was missed by his colleagues. Billie Busari showed some nice skills to make some space on the edge of the area and strike a nice shot that forced the keeper to tip it over. Connor Sansom is settling in well and he showed his worth by getting down quickly to tip a fine shot from Ryan Lewis just round the post. The second half continued in the same competitive vein with Billie Busari having the first effort on goal which flew over the bar. Luke Dunstan won the ball and fed Kieran Turner who in turn slipped a pass to Tommy Twelves who then fired just wide of the target. In a good early spell after the restart Ashley Campbell did well to get hold of a long ball and then find Kieran Turner but the resulting shot went wide. A dangerous ball into our area was missed by Webb before squirming harmlessly across our goal. In the 65th minute Potton missed a great opportunity to strike the first blow. Jim Burnside did really well to get behind our defence and pull the ball back to Aaron Murrell but the resulting shot lack conviction and was easily cleared. The visitors captain Christian Smail was nearly played into a promising position and Joe Fitzgerald clipped the bar with a cross. Kieran Turner and Tommy Twelves tested the keeper with a couple of shots but it was all ifs and buts until finally 7 minutes from normal time came the defining moment with a bit of quality that had been sadly missing during a generally scrappy game. The instigator was Ashton Campbell who sent over a sumptuous cross to the far post where Luke Dunstan literally rose to the occasion to produce a prodigious header to finally break the deadlock. It was Luke's 4th of the season and was a fitting reward for his usual tenacious performance. Score 1-0. Potton frantically pushed forward in search of an equaliser and we had to endure a few anxious moments before the Referee called time on the proceedings. FT Score 1-0. Afterwards a delighted Ian Richardson said " A hard fought win against a tough Potton side to finish what has been an excellent month for the players, with 21 goals scored and only 4 conceded in 6 games. Not a bad return! I have asked the boys to do the same for the month of October!". TA:1 Connor Sansom 2 Joe Fitzgerald 3 Alex Campana 4 Roy Byron (14 Mark Riddick 67) (17 Ben Johnson 85) 5 Dave O'Connor 6 Carl Mensah 7 Tommy Twelves 8 Luke Dunstan (Capt) 9 Ashton Campbell 10 Kieran Turner 11 Billie Busari (12 Jack Read 67). Subs not used: 15 Sam Joliffe 16 Chris Mason.
