About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm.

We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Grassroots Talk

Good afternoon & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Baldock Town, We wish them an enjoyable afternoon and a safe journey home afterwards.

Today’s match sponsor is Ian Ranger and you can find our more about our sponsor on page 19. We have availability on future games (see page 18) including some in January so if you are stuck for a Christmas gift idea please speak to Graham Bright if you are interested. Alternatively you could choose to sponsor your favourite player for the season (page 17) This is the last home first team game of 2020 in what has been a tough year for TAFC in a number of ways. It is testament to our long term and newer volunteers along with support from our sponsors and members that we remain in a strong position as a club. The floodlights are close to completion and the clubhouse has undergone a refurbishment ahead of the opening of Pendley Day Nursery in January (see page 16 for more information.) We as a committee are now reviewing potential projects for 2021 as we continue to look to improve our facilities and grow our supporter base within the local community. See an update from our chairman Bob Winter overleaf. If you are able to volunteer for the club on a regular basis or even just occasionally please speak to a committee member. We are always grateful for extra support. Next Saturday the first team travel to Newport Pagnelll and the reserves host Oxhey on Tuesday evening and Old Parmiterians next weekend. Entry to reserve team matches is by donation & they would welcome your support. May we take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.. We hope to see you back on 2nd January for the visit of North Greenford.

Covid Compliance We had visits to the ground by Hertfordshire Police and the league covid officer during home matches before lockdown and we have taken on board their feedback regarding the control steps we have taken. You will see stricter measures in place around the ground. There will be 10 covid compliance officers, in hi-viz vests, in strategic positions around the ground. They have full authority to deal with covid non-compliance in any way they see fit. We must be compliant, not complacent. Please continue to help us by socially distancing and adhering to the controls we have in place around the stadium.

Chairman’s Chat Firstly, season’s greetings and hope you are all well in these strange times. The pandemic has made for a challenging and frustrating time for us all – but hopefully there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Despite this, it has also been a very exciting time around the club with the new floodlights going up – a real milestone for the club. There has been a slight delay due to the need for a number of the contractor’s staff to self- isolate, but should be complete for Christmas. We can then start planning the big switch on event, which we will probably do in two stages – a low key event the first time we use them, and a much larger celebration when conditions allow us to do this properly. Either way I’m delighted to announce that Life Vice-President Barry Simmons has agreed to throw the switch. This is fitting as Barry actually started the whole floodlight project, and also recognises the massive contribution Barry has made to the club over the years.

We have also used the lockdown to renovate the clubhouse, which is now looking fabulous - many thanks to all those who have made this happen. Going forward both myself and the Executive Committee are determined that there will be a focus on investing in the infrastructure of the club, and are putting plans in place to make sure this is the case – we want the club to have the very best facilities possible.

On the field, First team results saw an upturn prior to the enforced break with 3 wins from the last 5 league games. It’s great to see the hard work and commitment of both players and management team being rewarded, and we must all play our part in supporting them in the challenges ahead. Also really pleasing that our Reserves and two U16 youth sides continue to play well and are getting the results they deserve. Whilst results are important, this club is all about people in my view and creating an environment where players can play and develop, and Members can enjoy themselves and feel that they are involved and part of things. Hopefully we are getting this right, but please shout if you have any ideas of how things could be improved. Likewise, please let me know if you would like to become more involved in any aspect of the club in any way, however large or small – all help will be gratefully received. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing some football today, and catching up with everyone. Enjoy the game – onwards and upwards! Cheers Bob

Match Report Saturday 31st October 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Tring Athletic 0-2 Dunstable Town

One step forwards for two steps back. Having secured 3 valuable points in the week and coaxed the Officials into playing the game after good work by our groundsman, we felt confident of securing the points. Defending the bottom end we began by consistently making hard work of the basic passes which could not always be blamed on the conditions. With players unavailable, we had to make a couple of positional changes and these undoubtedly affected us. On 14 mins we contrived to manufacture a Dunstable corner out of nothing which resulted in ex Tring Athletic striker Chris Stapleton converting on a free far post.

We improved and Joe Naylor could arguably been awarded a penalty when he was brought down by the Town keeper but having been told to cross the ball into the area to test any possible weaknesses we failed to do and all we had to show was a couple of long range attempts. On 31 mins we allowed our opponents to double the lead after more poor defending and after a good save by David Saunders they scored from the follow up.

Match Report On 35 mins Ollie Butler headed a good chance over from Will Foley free kick and with the slope and elements behind us in the second we had reasonable hopes of salvaging something from the game. Although we dominated the second period we never really got any consistent pressure on the Dunstable Town rearguard. Joe Chott forced a save with a decent cross shot and there was a possible penalty for handball on the hour. Sub Tom Shaw put in a couple of good crosses and put a free kick over the bar, Will Foley had 2 chances but to a large extent the game petered out. On the plus side 17 year old Rohan Hutchings did well on his debut . Team David Saunders, Harrison Cornick (Rohan Hutchins) Scott Bonner ,James Butler, Gareth Terblanche, Will Salmon, Will Foley, Oliver Butler, Joe Chott, Stephen Dodd (Tom Shaw) Joe .Naylor (Meshach Hendrickson)

Match Report Tuesday 27th October 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Broadfields 0-1 Tring Athletic A great result for Tring against another side close to the foot of the A battling away win for Tring with Ollie Butler scoring the winner in the 69th minute. For our final fixture before the lockdown we travelled to face fellow strugglers Broadfields. We were missing Harrison Cornick, Jack Sunderland, Paolo Bagatti, David Saunders and Adam Murphy through injury. Will Foley, Connor Smith and Stephen Dodd we unavailable through work commitments, but after our recent attempts to get new blood in we were able to give Scott Bullock, Tom Shaw and 17 year old Ronan Hutchins their first starts. With a slightly different formation we generally succeeded in keeping our opponents in front of us and Johnny Pitts in goal only really had 2 shots to save in the 90+ minutes. To be fair the same can largely be said of ourselves. On a wide pitch we were able to defend but found it harder to get enough bodies in and around centre forward Ollie Butler. Throughout the game we looked reasonably dangerous from set pieces especially corners and Scott Bonner, returning from injury, could have done better. The back four kept a good line and our custodian confidently dealt with the longer balls over the top. When possible we tried to play from the back and Ronan Hutchins was able to get on the ball and showed an ability to play on the turn. This kept us at least playing forwards, while Scott Bullock and Scott Bonner protected the space behind Ronan. Out wide Tom Shaw and Joe Naylor gave committed performances with Tom able to deliver a couple of crosses whilst Joe as ever was a handful.

Kevin McManus and James (the better Butler ho hum) won nearly every first ball and the full backs Prince Nimoh and Gareth Terblanche stopped the vast majority of crosses.

Match Report Up front Ollie Butler made maximum use of the possession he had and apart from one or two rushed decisions in the last 10 mins we showed our growing maturity by managing the game. The only goal came after 69 mins when some neat interplay through midfield resulted in a sweeping pass from Will Salmon out wide to Prince Nimoh, who having shown a reluctance on earlier occasions to cross the ball, picked out a peach of a delivery for Ollie Butler to head home on the far post. Subs Joe Chott and Callum Shortt, who has missed out on minutes recently, played their part.. By a twist of fate we have now won our last 3 Tuesday night games. The break will be used to have a look back on the season to date and bring in a couple of more players into the positions that need strengthening. Team Jonny Pitts, Prince Nimoh, Kevin Mcmanus, James Butler, Gareth Terblanche, Scott Bonner (Will Salmon) Scott Bullock, Ronan Hutchings (Callum Shortt) Tom Shaw, Ollie Butler, Joe Naylor (Joe Chott)

Our opponents Baldock Town FC played its first competitive match in September 2003 in the North Herts League at The Shed on Clothall Road, Baldock (Now known as Buffs FC). The match was against Magnum with a Rob Foster hat-trick sealing a 5-1 win.

Since then the Club have progressed from the North Herts League to the Herts Senior County League. The 1st Team won Division One of the HSCL in their debut season in 2007/2008. For three seasons from 2008/09, the team played its home matches on Saturday afternoons at The County Ground, Baldock Road in Letchworth, but they returned to Baldock for the 2011/12 season playing at Baldock Town FC's former home at Norton Road, which is now known as the North Herts Arena. After three near misses, the 1st Team finally won the Herts Senior County League Premier Division title in 2011/12. Unfortunately, due to ground grading issues, the team were unable to take their place in the Spartan South Midlands League.

For the 2012/13 season, the team began a groundshare with Hitchin Town FC. Despite finishing runners-up in the HSCL Premier Division the following season, it would still prove enough to secure that elusive promotion. Scott Grant's side also won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time and retained the Anagram Records Trophy.

Baldock Town The next two seasons saw a period of consolidation for the 1st Team finishing 7th and 10th respectively in Spartan South Midlands League Division One (Step 6 on the Non-League Pyramid). After Grant decided to step down Luke Gregson took the reins for the 2015/16 season, assisted by Dean Gilbert. After an indifferent start, the team went on a superb run and ended up just missing out on promotion. The 3rd place finish was the club's highest in the Football Pyramid to date. At the end of the 2018-19 season Luke Gregson stood down and former Welwyn Garden City manager Adam Fisher took over. Fisher’s side started slowly and only began to pick up some form at the end of November shortly after Rob Bates came on board as Assistant Manager bringing some key signings with him – Baldock went on an impressive unbeaten run climbing the table before the pandemic brought the season to a premature end. In the summer of 2020 Adam Fisher resigned as manager and the club promoted Assistant Manager Rob Bates to the Manager’s position. Rob has brought in his own management team and has also retained 90% of last season’s squad ahead of the 2020-21 season. The team currently groundshare at Arlesey Town FC's ground; there are plans in place to build a new stadium in Baldock near Clothall Common.

Reserved for the reserves

Saturday 5th December Last weekend saw 3rd placed Hatfield United visit and snatch a 3-3 draw through a controversial late equaliser. Tom Ainsworth scored twice and Dan To added a third before the scores were levelled up. This afternoon the reserves travel to Buntingford Town in the league and will host Old Parmiterians here at The Grass Roots Stadium next weekend. Click on the image below to watch the goals from the reserve’s win against Bovingdon back in September.

On This Day—12th December 2015 We booked our place in the final of the Herts Charity Shield, a trophy we have lifted on three occasions, following a terrific performance against title chasing Welwyn Garden City. Our young guns registered their best result of the season and kept another clean sheet, their third from the last four games. We got off to a great start and could even afford to miss an early penalty after Sam Joliffe was tripped in the area in the third minute, but Sam's effort was well saved by keeper Joe Croft. But that didn't deter us as two minutes later Taylor Collins curled home a shot from outside the area with the keeper rooted to the spot. It was Taylor's first goal since his welcome return to the club following a spell at Aylesbury United. Score 1-0. We stunned our opponents in the 44th minute with a superb goal from Kieran Turner. Jack Westlake (who again put in a super unselfish shift in midfield) broke up an attack and played the ball out wide to Kieran. From an unpromising position on the right Kieran chipped the ball over the keeper and in off the far post. It was quite simply an exquisite goal. Score 2-0. WGC first half woes got even worse two minutes into added time and again it was Kieran Turner who was the chief architect behind it with a brilliant run along the bye line before crossing to Sam Joliffe to stab home from close range. Score 3-0. WGC made two changes at the start of the second half bringing on Levi Gunn and Bobby Dance for Daryl Smith and Ashley Kersey but any hopes of a rival were smashed within 66 seconds after a terrible defensive blunder allowed Sam Joliffe to grab his second goal of the game and virtually clinch our place in the final. Score 4-0. In the 77th minute our guests came the closest to scoring when Jason Caswell did well to get a firm shot on target forcing Matt Evans to get down low and make a super save. But there was a sting in the tail to that near miss as we immediately broke down the other end and scored our fifth goal. Kieran Turner and Joe Naylor (who three minutes earlier had replaced Taylor Collins) combined well and although the keeper saved Kieran's effort Joe was on hand to coolly slot the ball passed some defenders on the line. It was the 17 year olds fourth goal for the First Team and he looks a tremendous prospect for the future. Score 5-0.

TAFC 6-0 Welwyn Garden City Jason Caswell showed his goal scoring instinct by controlling the ball nicely then shooting just wide but generally this was a performance that the visitors will not want to remember and ten minutes from time they shot themselves in the foot again when a terrible wayward pass went straight to Kieran Turner who raced through to tuck away his 10th goal of the season. Score 6-0. The last action saw Dave O'Connor get his head to a corner but the keeper was able to make a comfortable save. FT Score 6-0. Afterwards Manager Ian Richardson expressed his satisfaction by saying "it was an outstanding performance from the first minute to the last. With a clean sheet and six goals I couldn't ask for more".
