Tring Athletic v Crawley Green 7.45pm Tuesday 15th September 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Grassroots Talk. Good evening & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium for our first competitive home game since 10th March. Tonight we welcome Crawley Green’s players, officials and supporters as well as our match officials Chris Parperi, Oliver Simnock and Mark Mellor. In one of those strange coincidences, Crawley Green would have been our next opponents at home had the 19/20 season not been put on hold before being declared null & void. Today’s match sponsors are Heygates, a former TAFC shirt sponsor in the 1990s and we would like to thank them for their continued support. The Heygate family took over the flour mill in Tring in 1945 and the business now employs 80 people locally producing around 12 tonnes of flour an hour at their mill on the Grand Union canal.

For the 5th consecutive season we exited the FA Cup at the first stage, a match which came too early, in what was a disjointed pre season, caused by high levels of Covid cases locally. We will look to make amends on Saturday when we travel to Harefield United in the FA Vase. We are pleased to have retained a large number of the players that ended last season with us, as well as introducing a few new faces into the squad adding competition for places. The strong numbers we had at pre season training show that players want to be playing their football at Tring Athletic. The management hope to bring through two competitive senior teams this season, whilst giving opportunities to our young local talent to develop. There have been a few “behind the scenes” changes at the club during the very long lay off and we’ll bring full details of these to you shortly as well as some exciting plans which should come to fruition over the next few months.

About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm. We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Match Report Sat 12th September 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Colney Heath 2-0 TAFC First team An opening day league defeat for Athletic as Colney Heath scored one in each half for the three points. For our season League opener we could have wished for an easier start than Colney Heath, who even with a few changes from last season, still are a big strong side who do what they do well. Playing down the hill we made a poor start with Paolo Bagatti miskicking a pass and the result was an early cross and unnecessary pressure. We then defended a couple of corners before a mishit clearance from a free kick allowed our opponents to open their account on 7 minutes. It took us a couple of minutes to recover from the shock, but we got back in the game playing some tidy football. We came close with a Prince Nimoh header and a Joe Naylor strike from 20 yards which produced a good save from ex Tring custodian Matt Evans. Colney Heath then hit the bar with another header from a corner. The game then settled with Prince Nimoh making inroads down our right, in turn Colney Heath played some good cross field passes to their right side which produced a couple of crosses but no real danger. Joe Naylor had another long range strike and apart from the scoreline we were reasonably happy as half time approached, although aware that we had the advantage of the slope in the first period. Again without setting the world on fire we kept the ball quite well although maybe the odd ball in behind would give some variety to our play. After 55 mins Scott Bonner ,who had an otherwise steady game, gave the ball away in midfield. This resulted in a second goal from probably their best player George Devine, who beat David Saunders at the near post having held off our defence. There was now a literal and metaphoric mountain to climb and in truth,we produced very little while Colney Heath, rightly sat back and played balls into good areas. After 65 mins subs Connor Goodliffe and Will Salmon were introduced to give us more tempo and we began to get more than our share of the ball. With 15 mins to go Frankie Hercules was introduced and with 10 mins left Connor Goodliffe played a smashing ball into the 18 yd box for Ollie Butler to take a great first touch, but having beaten the keeper the ball hit the far post before being cleared for another corner. In truth this really should have been our opener. The last 10 mins saw our opponents manage the situation to achieve an opening day win. Thanks to those who made the effort to come and support. Team David Saunders, Paolo Bagatti,Kevin Mcmanus, Adam Murphy, Harrison Cornick, Prince Nimoh, Connor Blake (Will Salmon) Scott Bonner (Connor Goodliffe) Oliver Butler, Callum Shortt (Frankie Hercules) Joe Naylor. Subs not used: Joe Cowan, Keith Eldridge.

Our Opponents The History of Crawley Green FC - Saturday Side Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99 year lease from the Council. The New Club house was formally open on 19th June, 1992 by then Luton Town manager, David Pleat. The badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. In 2018 Luton Town FC and Crawley Green FC further enhanced their club partnership with the announcement that Crawley Green FC will play their home games at The Brache training ground from season 2018-2019. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, have been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium.

Saturday 12th September Herts Senior County League—Division One Tring Athletic Res 1-0 Knebworth James Butler with the winner as we pick up three points. Tring bounced back from last week's defeat with a good performance against Knebworth. Both teams created early chances Tring's Dan To & Lewis Dwight both had shots which went just over. On 20 minutes Andy Humphreys had a shot saved by the visiting keeper and four minutes later had another attempt cleared off the line. At half time it was 0-0 with Athletic edging it on chances created. Into the second half, Humphreys again went close shooting across goal before he turned provider for what proved to be the match winner. After 70 minutes, a throw in for Athletic was received by Humphreys who crossed for James Butler to score. 1-0 There was more action to come at both ends with Humphreys having another shot beating the keeper and being clear off the line. Play then switched to the other end and Knebworth forced Jonny Pitts into a great save which ultimately secured all three points. With about ten minutes to play the visitors hit the post but there was to be no equaliser. Team Jonny Pitts, George Hill, Colm Parrot, Dan Stedman, Matt Stacey, Will Gibson, James Butler, Adam Priestley, Andy Humphreys, Dan To, Lewis Dwight. Subs. Ross Hazel, George Saunders, Tom Ainsworth, Luke Young, Miles Blumson.

Managers’ Musings - Chris Jurasek

When we entertained Wembley on March 10th little did we think that it would be 6 months before our next home fixture!!! It's been good to see a lot of our regular supporters at the pre season games and hopefully you and yours are in rude health.

Our turn out at training has been excellent and I'm delighted to say that every player from last season has decided to stay. In fact unfortunately I've had to let 4 players go, all of whom I thank for their efforts, especially Les Barkers-Obua who has been with us for 4 seasons and never really let us down but unfortunately I couldn't guarantee him enough minutes. If they're still talking to me they'll all be welcome back if things change. We also welcome Scott Bonner from Oxhey Jets and Adam Murphy ex - Chalfont St Peter & Harefield Utd. Harrison Cornick, Frankie (the better) Hercules and Will Foley, all products of the u18s have featured as has Connor Goodliffe signed on the recommendation of the Hemel Hempstead Town FC U 18 Manager Steve Boone. In our first competitive fixture we exited the F A Cup, losing 2-0 at Easington Sports. The margin between excuses and reasons is marginal and although only having played 2 games due to the current Covid situation didn't help, we weren't good enough on the night. Last Saturday we succumbed to Colney Heath by the same scoreline in our opening League fixture. Off the pitch I'd like to thank the Committee for their hard work with keeping our heads above water, especially Tony Stedman who took on the role as Covid Officer, Bob Winter, Mark Weston etc. Also Dave Stacey has single handedly painted everything that didn't move and the place looks a lot better for it. From a First team point of view I can promise you all that we have a squad that will run through brick walls and competition for places will help - hopefully results will go our way. If they don't win, it's the manager’s fault!! Myself and James have added Michael East and Tring Athletic old boy Richard "Dickie " Smith to the management team. Keith Eldridge has been around to coach the 4 keepers we have and generally do the 101 things we forget to do at matches - don't know where he gets it from Eldo!!!! Once again, good to see you all again!! Onwards and upwards.
