Tring Athletic v Crawley Green 3.00pm - Saturday 15h February 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Grassroots Talk. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Crawley Green along with our match officials and hope tyhey enjoy their brief spell with us. Well what a start to our newly focused club this week has been. No one expected a win like that last Saturday although those of you who have followed the Reserves and Under 18 sides will have been aware of the potential within the club. I say newly focused, but in fact we are only returning to our Origins. When the club was formed back in the late fifties, it was to provide football for the local youth in a break away from Tring Town. This will be the ethics we have returned to. Giving local players the opportunity to play for their local club to a level they are capable of and within the financial means of the club. We would like to Thank Chris Juraszak, James Shaw and all the players from The Reserves, A Team and Youth side for stepping forward and taking up the challenge.

We would also like to thank all of our supporters for turning up last Saturday and making the club feel ‘’Good’’ again. Our biggest crowd of the season so far. Also all the messages of support from friends old and new within the footballing community are very much appreciated. Lastly our sponsors, who have also supported our stance and I am sure will benefit from this going forward. We know that there may be some tough times ahea But with your support and enthusiasm, we know we can make the Town proud of this club.

Match Report Sat 8th Feb 2020 League Sponsored by David Foskett TAFC First team 6-0 Leverstock Green TAFC goals: Will Foley, Joe Cowan, Prince Nimoh, Jack Sunderland, Will Salmon, Miles Habashi Well, where do we start. After a turbulent week, we started with 2 recognised first team players. One playing on the left up front instead of left back and one making his 5th appearance. One ex player brought back, four from the under 18 side and the rest Reserve team players. Put on a good performance was all we could ask for. This great bunch of lads not only did this and in front of the biggest home crowd of the season, they equalled the biggest win to defeat local rivals Leverstock Green 6-0. A credit to themselves and a credit to the club and well worth the ÂŁ70 bar tab. Tring Athletic (3) 6 Leverstock Green (0) 0 After an interesting week which resulted in only two players being available from last weeks squad, a 3 oclock kick off was considered apt as the majority of players would not otherwise be home until past their bedtime.

In front of a crowd of 182 Tring Athletic kicked off down the hill and the first twenty minutes were relatively even with both teams having their fair share of possession. The home team looked dangerous from corners and set pieces and after twenty -five minutes a well delivered Will Foley free kick went in at far post. Score 1-0. Within five minutes left back Joe Cowan scored with a lob towards the far post. Score 2-0. On 35 mins a neat Jack Sunderland pass resulted in a turn and shot from the edge of the area by Prince Nimoh for probably the goal of the game. Score 30. On 40 mins a lack of communication by two Tring defenders and a neat pass into the penalty area, resulted in a good chance for Leverstock Green which fortunately was scuffed by the far post. Half Time: Tring Athletic 3 Leverstock Green 0 At the restart, defending the slope Tring Athletic expected and got a strong response from Leverstock Green but within ten minutes some excellent work down the right hand side by Prince Nimoh resulted in a tidy Jack Sunderland finish. Score 4-0. To a large extent this knocked the wind out of our opponents sails but custodian David Saunders pulled off a stupendous save from an excellent cross shot to help preserve a clean sheet. Unfortunately at this stage Leverstock Green having used all their subs lost a player through injury which looked nasty at the time but a subsequent phone call elicited the fact that fortunately he has made a recovery. On 85 mins mid-field dynamo Will Salmon struck home from twenty-five yards making it 5-0 and on 90 mins right back Miles Habashi completed the scoring. FT Score 6-0. It is very hard to pick out individuals in what was a good team performance but returnee Kevin McManus marshalled the seventeen year olds in the back five expertly. In midfield Will Salman stepped into the breach and both Olly Butler and Will Foley helped win the midfield battle. The front three of Jack Sunderland, Clement Asante and especially Prince Nimoh worked hard to keep the visitors on the back foot whilst subs Les Barker-Obua and Frankie Hercules played their part. Our opponents took the result with the same grace that we would hope and we would like to compliment then on their behavior. Chris Juarszek said after the match; "I would like to thank all those involved this week in helping make today one of our better days." Team:: D Saunders; M Habashi, K McManus, H Cornick, J Cowan, W Salmon, O Butler (L Barkers-Obua), W Foley, J Sunderland (J Naylor), C Asante P Nimoh (F Hercules): Unused Subs W Mullarkey, T Goodly

Our Opponents The Recent History of Crawley Green FC - Saturday Side Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99 year lease from the Council. The New Club house was formally open on 19th June, 1992 by then Luton Town manager, David Pleat.

The badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. In 2018 Luton Town FC and Crawley Green FC further enhanced their club partnership with the announcement that Crawley Green FC will play their home games at The Brache training ground from season 2018-2019. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, have been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately in that time they have failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision has meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years now, to enable the team to continue to play at that level. This is a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), means that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals. Luton recently installed a brand new all-weather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green will complete the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen.

“In the past we have seen a number of ex-Crawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition the recently transferred Tyreeq Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system.

News from some of our other sides

Tue 4th Feb 2020 Shield TAFC Reserve team 1-0 Thatcham Town Development TAFC goals: Casey O'Gorman Tring Ath.Res (0)1 Thatcham Town (0)0 These were our first opponents in a group of five with Oxford City, Dunstable Town & AFC Hayes & Yeading. We play each other once with the winners going into a semi final. Having got the massive bonus of a home draw saving a journey of 130 miles on a Tuesday we put on a performance which will not live long in the memory and in truth our opponents possibly deserved a draw.

Playing down the slope we managed to make a miss a number of chances and failed to take advantage of a series of corners and in particular long throws from Tom Withers. The back 4 was again marshalled well by Matt Stacey and despite under par performances from a few we looked relatively comfortable at half time. Within 3 mins we took the lead when some neat interplay between Casey O'Gorman and Clem Asante resulted in the former having a shot trickle over the line. This should have been the start of our taking advantage of our opponents pushing forward for an equaliser instead we became messy and disjointed. Playing not holding their positions and when Matt Stacey went off with a slight hamstring strain worrying gaps appeared at the back and eventually only a tight offside from one long ball over where the centre halves should have prevented an equaliser.

GOAL of the MONTH Sponsored by

Spartan South Midland Premier Division 11th February 2020 North Greenwood Utd 2-1 Tring Athletic First of all, my congratulations to all those at NGU for all their hard work in getting the pitch ready, although it was marginal with large sanded areas especially on the edge of the penalty area at the Clubhouse end. As ever the hospitality was up to the usual high standard at this Club. We kicked off we the same starting X1 as in the win last Saturday. It became obvious quickly that maybe the euphoria of Saturday and an awkward journey to today's game had taken something out of a couple of players. In midfield we did not move the ball quickly enough and the odd missed tackle and unfortunate ricochet meant we lacked some fluidity. Having said that we were the better side making good headway out wide on both wings and the delivery at set pieces created problems. On 25 mins Harrison Cornick was unfortunate with a side foot volley on the far post after a cross following a cleared corner. On 30 mins we took what was I suggest a deserved lead with a near post finish from a Will Foley corner, We then a break of 3 on 1 but unfortunately Jack Sunderland having beaten the keeper saw his shot hit the post and go wide. On more than one occasion a poor last pass when in a good position brought promising attacks to an end. To be fair NGU had a decent share of possession especially early on when they consistently found their tricky left winger who delivered several crosses but as a unit we defended well and half time arrived with David Saunders and their custodian not really have made a save. Our opponents certainly picked the pace up in the second half but had posed little danger till we again lost a ball in midfield which resulted in a corner ,this in turn was miskicked on the near post and the looped clearance was converted on the far post. NGU then got on top for 10 mins spraying the ball out wide but despite having us on the back foot there were few moments to cause concern. We slowly worked our way back into the by introducing substitutes inc. Connor Blake who was neat and tidy in midfield and Joe Naylor who gave us extra momentum out wide The 2 relatively easy chances that we made were spurned and in the 92 min then winner came when the excellent Kev McManus made his only mistake by slipping over. A defeat that should have been at least a draw is hard to take but as was pointed, in truth we had 4 good chances and missed them all while our opponents scored with their only worthwhile strike on goal. We kept trying to play tidy football when maybe a plan B when we turn defenders should be used. Hopefully as a unit we can learn from this on and off the pitch. D.Saunders.
