Official Programme

Tring Athletic v London Colney 7.30pm Tuesday 20th October 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Match sponsor—Tony Stedman

Grassroots Talk Good evening & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium. Tonight we welcome the players, officials and supporters of London Colney, wishing them an enjoyable evening and safe journey home afterwards. We would usually look at the form and league positions of the two sides competing although I’m sure both sets of teams would prefer to ignore this tonight. It could be said you’ll be watching the league’s two strongest teams, as we are holding the rest of the division up! London Colney have play six matches picking up a solitary point in a 0-0 draw at Wembley in their opening game of the season. Looking back at our matches we can perhaps gain some comfort that seven of our league matches so far have been against clubs currently in the top 8. Today’s match sponsors is our treasurer Tony Stedman and we would like to thank him for his support. We have availability on future games (see page 12) or you could choose to sponsor your favourite player for the season (page 11.) Our Commercial Manager Graham Bright has been busy securing sponsors for our four sides, but we’d love to have more local businesses supporting us here at Tring Athletic. Our match programme This is the second season of producing online only programmes and we hope to keep improving this offering as time goes on. This is a work in progress so please let us know what you think. If you click on any of the logos or adverts it should direct you straight to our sponsors websites. This also means we can bring you features such as match highlights at the click of a button. Covid Impact

With a vast number of laws and guidelines affecting us both on and off the pitch, we can sometimes fall short of volunteers. If you are able to help the club on a regular basis or even just occasionally please speak to a committee member. We are always grateful for extra support. Another home game The first team play again at home this weekend hosting Oxhey Jets. This will be our first home game on a Saturday this season so please spread the word, bring a friend and give us a big home support.

About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm. We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Match Report Sat 17th October 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Harpenden Town 3-1 TAFC First team As manager I have to apologise for the abysmal display that masqueraded as a first half from ourselves. The result was similar to Leighton Town but that was the only similarity to this effort against unbeaten Harpenden Town. We set up to defend in a similar way to Tuesday, to frustrate the opposition and try to get something on the break. To some extent we achieved the first part of the plan but too many poor touches in midfield, passes under hit instead of behind defenders resulted in very limited possession, one poorly delivered corner and one shot. I won't mention the players but a couple need to have a look at their decision making, one pass across our own area for no good reason will remain with me for some time. For 35 mins we limited our opponents to a couple of half chances and then from a corner a decision to change the way we defend resulted in a scrappy goal on the far post which had been vacated despite specific orders against. On 43 mins quite why a Tring Athletic forward decided to make a tackle in the penalty area, that was poor in its thought process and in its execution, was quite hard to believe. So within 10 mins the game had potentially slipped away. As plan A had totally failed we changed the way to play and that together with Harpenden Town dropping off resulted in some good and potentially fruitful football being played. We kept the ball well and slowly worked our way back into the game. On 63 mins an opponent turned towards his own goal and presented Ollie Butler with the ball, he carried it 10 yards before playing a slide rule pass into Callum Shortt who finished confidently. For 10/12 minutes it looked like the improbable might happen and we could yet get something out of the game but on 75 mins we again decided to shoot ourselves in the foot, which we at least is far more successfully done than we do at the real thing. We never looked like recovering from this blow and our opponents played out time to secure a deserved win. After 7 away games (which hasn't helped) we are at home to fellow strugglers London Colney on Tuesday when both teams will be desperate to get their first win of the season. Very soon but the proverbial 6 pointer! Our supporters have been behind us 100% and are needed again on Tuesday. David Saunders. Paolo Bagatti, Kevin Mcmanus, James Butler, Jack Sunderland (Gareth Terblanche), Frankie Hercules (Joe Naylor), Will Salmon (Steven Dodd), Harrison Cornick, Callum Shortt, Will Foley, Ollie Butler.

After winning the Herts Charity Shield again in 1998–99, they were Premier Division runners-up in 2000–01 and went on to win the league title and the Challenge Cup the following season. However, following a decline in form, the club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 2007–08 and were relegated to Division One.

London Colney won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy in 2009–10 and were Division One champions in 2011–12, earning promotion to the Premier Division. On This Day 20th October 2018 - TAFC 2-0 Edgeware Town We started on the front foot and came close to opening the scoring after just 10 minutes when Tommy Twelves header from a corner was cleared off the line by Sam Addae with the keeper well beaten. Many supporters will remember Sam from his time at Athletic, playing 48 games for the club between 20012 and 2015. The most memorable moment from his time here was a stunning goal he scored against Hertford Town in the 1st minute of the game. We later went onto win 6-0 but as least he can say he broke the ice first! He later modestly described it as his Roberto Carlos moment! Interestingly, the others in the team that day were current players Sam Joliffe and Jack Sunderland. A minute later the Town keeper Greg Ellingham tipped a free kick from Kieran Turner round the post although it looked as if it was going wide anyway. We had most of the early possession and territory with the opposition failing to test keeper Connor Sansom but despite doing most of the attacking we created just a few half chances rather than clear cut openings. Midway through the half the opposition left back David Sota did head a decent cross just wide but the Referee said he would have awarded us a foul on Connor Sansom had the ball hit the net. Chris Mason's astute pass nearly picked out an unmarked Jack Sunderland in the area and a fine Ben Johnson cross seemed to hypnotise the Town defence but they cleared the danger before we could pounce. It was all bits and pieces and nothing clear cut then Alex Campana sent a free kick just over the bar. However, it proved to be a bit of a prelude for the real thing when Camps lined up to take another free kick on the left hand side of the area in the 40th minute. This time he whipped in a fierce shot that beat the keeper and hit the roof of the net. It was Camps first goal for the club and was a long over due reward for some impressive performances for us. Score 1-0. That was the last action of any note and we went into the break deservedly holding a slim one goal lead and although it had been a game of few clear cut chances we had been the better side and looked the more likely to score. HT Score 1-0. The visitors were a different proposition from the restart showing a lot more attacking intent and creating some moments of danger for our defence. However, the first move of the second period saw Alex Campana make a great run to set Ashton Campbell free who was denied by a terrific saving tackle from a defender. Ben Johnson cleared a potentially dangerous moment in our area and Connor Sansom had to be alert to come out to beat Sam Odusoga to a through ball shortly after the same player had shot wide following a fine move. Just before the hour Sansom was forced to show off his skills by denying Steven Banavides with a great save, blocking the shot with his legs. The visitors had their tails up and we were forced to show off our defensive capabilities. Gradually we weathered the storm and Kieran Turner was unlucky to see his shot drift just wide of the far post. After the frenetic start to the second half the game evened out and chances were at a premium again. Jack Sunderland did put the ball in the net but was adjudged to have fouled the keeper. We nearly settled the game in the 81st minute when Carl Mensah smashed a shot against the bar. With just four minutes remaining Town nearly snatched a late dramatic equaliser when their leading scorer Mikkel James was played through but again Connor Sansom came to our rescue by using his legs to keep out the shot. Connor has really settled well into the side and has made a major contribution to our winning run with some crucial saves at key moments, he has been a superb signing. With just 3 minutes left on the clock we sealed the victory when Ashton Campbell made a brilliant run to the bye line then pulled the ball back nicely to Jack Read who found the back of the net for his 36th goal from 77 first team appearances, which is a superb return of nearly a goal every other game. Score 2-0. There was just time to show our strength in depth when we brought on one of our up and coming youngsters off the bench, yes Stuart "Beamer" Stedman. Somebody cruelly said he was 40 but he is much younger than that at 38! He made 2 tackles and then showed he has not lost any of his skills with a pass made with the outside of his right foot. Shame it hit the advertising hoarding!! FT Score 20. TA:1 Connor Sansom 2 Ben Johnson 3 Chris Mason 4 Roy Byron 5 Tommy Twelves 6 Carl Mensah 7 Joe Fitzgerald (14 Billie Busari 67) 8 Alex Campana (15 Stuart Stedman 90+1) 9 Ashton Campbell 10 Kieran Turner (Capt) 11 Jack Sunderland (12 Jack Read 74).
