Grass Roots Talk Welcome to our supporters and friends in grassroots football. Hopefully you are staying safe in these difficult times. Regrettably we have lost two people with connections with the club. Michael ‘Butch’ Connell who was a Berkhamsted supporter first but could often be seen at Pendley when they were playing away and was at our last game against Wembley. Mike Appleby who was the Spartan League Secretary and held many other positions within the game. Were both victims of this horrendous virus and we send our condolences to both families and friends. We now know that the leagues for all of our teams have been classed as void, as have most of the cups although it has not been confirmed if The St. Mary’s Cup will be finished as yet. We have a semi-final against Leverstock Green tolook forward to if it goes ahead.
When football at our level will get going again is anyone's guess at the Moment. Football will be difficult enough to organise but at our level it is the social aspect which is as important and possibly pubs and clubs will be the last thing to open. Saying that New Zealand have just opened their pubs so we it may happen sooner than we think. Next season we are going to reduce the number of sides we run. This is to ensure we are financially viable and to have a more local basis to our sides. We will have two Saturday sides and plan to run two Sunday Youth sides. The first team will play in The Spartan South Midland Premier division. However the intention at present is to play the reserves in a more local league. The youth sides will also be local lads paving the way into adult football for boys in the local community. We will not be running a midweek youth side as Cliff has decided to step down and the cost of running this side is just too much at this time. When we get to return, you will see the pitch is looking good and the ground has had some tlc spent on it all carried out within the current guideline. Hope to see you all soon and take care in the meantime.
Southern Counties Flood light League. Cliff and Trevor Hercules and all the team had a great season and looked nailed on to win the league in what would have been their most successful season, As it is the last year at this age group for many of the boys, it makes the decision to scrap the season more difficult to take as they will now never get the recognition that their efforts have deserved or the chance to try and repeat this seasons efforts. It also comes at a time when Cliff has decided to step down from management to concentrate on his business and to spend more time with his family. Along with his brother Trevor, they have developed some good young talent over the last few years. This was shown this season when many of the boys stepped up to senior football probably sooner than was planed to fill the void in the first and reserve sides when called upon. They showed some great potential and did not look out of place playing in adult football and are sure to go on and do well and this level and higher in some Cases. It has been a pleasure to watch the sides they have turned out who always played with the right attitude which is not always the case I am afraid. It was always good to win but the performance was always the key factor, Hopefully sometime down the road we will be able to get together to salute their efforts but in the mean time we thank them for their time at the club..
