Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects

I write this as I come to and end of my holiday in the Far East, having met up with friends and colleagues in Beijing and in Hong Kong where I worked for fifteen years and prior to that, enjoying the amazing differences in China, from Beijing, to Guilin, to Xi’an and Shanghai. China is proud of its traditions and culture, but it is a country which looks to the future. Its cities put ours to shame, in terms of cleanliness, efficiency and modernity. At the Club, we have hit the ground running, the first team having not been beaten in September. We are running six teams, which bodes well for the future and must be the envy of other Clubs. We should be able to look forward with optimism. I know that not everyone shares that view. Towards the end of last season, a long term fan asked me whether we really wanted promotion? Have I missed the point here? Sport, and football is no exception, is about competing well and fairly. It is also about developing players to reach their full potential. It is also about winning. Standing still is only an option, if we are prepared to go backwards. I was reminded recently by a supporter that we are not Manchester United. We are not, on the pitch, but we must still aim to be the best at what we do, on and off it. I think these are exciting times for everyone concerned. Progression involves change. Not everyone likes that. But as I have said often, we should have no fear in doing business with China, other than fear itself. I have had my “fix” from the Far East for the time being, but it has made me restless to help to achieve more with TAFC.

Match Report Sat 28th Sept 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Arlesey Town 0 - 2 TAFC LOUIES DOUBLE TAKES US EVEN FURTHER CLEAR AT THE TOP Let me take you back to 2013. I am reffing Dacorum District U13s and the stand-out player is a little midfielder called Louie dominating and scoring. This lad is going to be good. Fast forward 6 years and I am watching a slightly bigger Louie putting in a dominating and scoring performance for us. Same old, same old. Just one request Louie stay with us for the season, its going to be a cracker! Bogdans nomination for MOM is, unsurprisingly, Louie. Not mine! Mine is Phil Lowen. The phrase efficient and effective was made for this guy. We thought Riddick was a quality act last season in the win it, give it role but this guy is even better. Makes it all look so simple and never a hair out of place, but his value to the team is immense. We put in a patchy first half performance in which the only winner was the wind. The management team was getting increasingly frustrated as we couldnt get our passing game going. Orans game was a mixture of brilliance and howlers but three times he put in tantalising crosses which no-one got on the end of. Our match report would not be complete without the phrase, Charlie saves with his legs and he did so in the 10th minute to deny the centre forward in what turned out to be Arleseys only decent attempt at goal. So, despite a lot of huffing and puffing we went in at 0-0 to a nice pleasant half time conversation with the management! I have a lot of sympathy for the lads as the blustery conditions were making good football almost impossible. Whatever was dished out at half time, it probably wasnt sympathy but it worked. Second half a complete turn-around, as predicted by this writer. Within 15 minutes we are two up and game over. First goal, at last an Oran cross is on the button, Dash crashes a header against the post and Louie nets the rebound. Two minutes later, a lovely team goal, with Louie latching on to a Dash pass and netting. We had chances to increase our lead a Tommy header, Luke hooking over and Connor Blake blazing over from 10 yards when all set for his first goal for the first team, and we looked untroubled at the back with commanding performances from an increasingly resilient back line.

So, after a run of eight straight wins, we are now six points clear although this is slightly misleading as Colney Heath have a 100% record and three games in hand. Around the same time last season we had 10 consecutive wins which was a club record. Come on lads we can beat that. Premier Division Team of the Month for September? Without question.

TEAM: C Mann, B Johnson, C Church, P Lowen, T Fletcher (C Blake), J Carter, L Dunstan, L Collier, C Dash, O Swales ( M Rickman 62), D Ferrigno (J Lovell 62).

EYNESBURY ROVERS FC HISTORY This season Eynesbury Rovers have returned to the Spartan South Midlands League after an absence of 80 years. Eynesbury Rovers were formed in 1897 and played friendly matches before joining the Biggleswade & District League and then the St Neots Junior League, which they won in 1910/11. They lifted the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup for the first time in 1914 and won the County Junior Cup in 1921, 1927 and 1932. Competing in the Bedford & District League Eynesbury won 2nd Division championships in 1927, 1931 and 1932 and in 1934 they joined the South Midlands League. Promotion was achieved at the first attempt while the Scott-Gatty Cup was won, while Senior Cup finals in 1937 and 1939 ended in defeat. The post war era began with Rovers joining the United Counties League and they enjoyed spectacular cup success winning the Hunts Senior Cup and Hinchingbrooke Cup four times each in a five year period. In the 1950-51 campaign a Premier Cup success made it a cup hat trick. In 1952 Eynesbury joined the Eastern Counties League finishing fourth in their second season. In 1955 a crowd of 4,000 packed into Hall Road to watch a friendly against Fulham with the legendary Stanley Matthews guesting for Rovers. The club continued to enjoy cup success lifting the Senior Cup in 1955 and 1957, the Hinchingbrooke Cup in 1959 and Cambs Invitation Cup in 1962, but they were finding life difficult in the league. In 1963 they rejoined the UCL. Successes in the Hinchingbrooke Cup in 1967 and Hunts Senior Cup in 1970 masked a continued decline and relegation was suffered in 1972. A top flight place was regained in 1977 and floodlights were installed in 1981 with Luton Town providing the opposition for the official opening in front of a four figure crowd. The Hunts Senior Cup was won in 1985 before Gary Pilsworth enjoyed great success as manager, leading Eynesbury to a best ever third place in the league, two Hunts Senior Cup wins, a Premier Cup success and two East Anglian Cup finals, and Alan Day kept the momentum going with a 1993 Senior Cup success. Barry Cavilla was next in the hot seat and he led Rovers to a best ever FA Vase run before the 1995-96 campaign saw Eynesbury finish fifth in the league and win both the Senior and Premier Cups. Peter Schofield took over and done well to keep the team in the Premier Division on a small budget. Neil King returned and enjoyed success in the Hunts Senior Cup in 2000 but was followed by relegation a year later. Steve Galbraith took over and in 2002 Rovers again won the Senior Cup beating St Neots 3-0 in the final, while the 2003-04 campaign saw them reach the Premier Cup final only to lose 4-2 to Wootton. In the summer of 2005 Dean Shipp took charge and the following season Rovers reached the final of the South Midlands Floodlit Cup losing 2-1 to Saffron Walden. In December 2007 Rovers appointed the management duo of Al Lenihan and former player Pat O'Keeffe. Season 2008/09 saw Rovers near the top of the table for most of the season but had to settle for 9th place after being deducted six points. Al & Pat resigned at the end of that season and Eynesbury appointed Matt Plumb to take charge for the start of the 2009/10 campaign and with Martin Field he guided Rovers back to the Premier Division in 2013/14. In a record breaking season they finished with a record number of points (98) and goals (118) and recorded a club record 11 consecutive wins. Lee Bassett became the first Eynesbury player to score 50 goals in a season. Matt Plumb took on the role of chairman in the summer of 2015 before Martin Field resigned in October 2015. Mark Ducket was appointed as manager and in four campaigns he has led Rovers to three Hunts Senior Cup Finals, winning 1-0 against St Neots Town in 2017. Whilst in the same season recording 119 league goals whilst equaling their second best ever league placing finishing fifth. Last season Rovers finished 6th in the UCL Premier Division whilst Matt Plumb won the UCL Groundsman of the Year award.
