Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects

Well, we are almost into the season. Understandably, the FA Cup match with Burnham had to be re-scheduled, owing to the tragic death of their Chairman’s son, in a car crash. We have offered our condolences. There is a very positive mood in the Club, with the coaches from all our teams working together to improve and develop the players. We would like to see more local players graduating to the first team, but that will take time. Kevin Christou has brought in several experienced coaches, with Stuart Stedman providing continuity from last season. Their approach has been well received by the players and it is particularly pleasing to see Ollie Butler competing again at this level. The introduction of “sin bins” will be interesting and to see how coaches and players respond to this Law change at our level. VAR is to be used in the Premier League too, so no doubt it will spark all sorts of debate. The great thing about the Game is that we all become “experts” when new technology is introduced. Opinions will be extreme. I was delighted that so many local coaches turned out to watch Roy Hodgson’s coaching session. Roy is from the “old school” where the Manager does most of the coaching. It amused me when asked how he coped with the language differences with so many overseas players. . In 1994, when I worked in Hong Kong, Roy brought the Switzerland national team to train ahead of the World Cup Finals in USA. I attended his first press conference then, which he conducted in three languages! He speaks six!

Match Report Sat 3rd Aug 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Tring Athletic 1 - 2 Colney Heath There was disappointment for Tring as they lost a close game 2-1 against Colney Heath in their opening league game of the season on Saturday 3rd August. The game took place at a sunny Grass Roots Stadium with both teams looking to get off to winning starts. The opening was even between the two sides with the first chance of the game going to the home side. A great ball from Ben Johnson was met by the head of Captain Matthew Mitchell whose header was tipped over the bar by Colney keeper May. Two minutes later it was the same combination of Johnson to Mitchell, this time with an even better save coming from the Heath keeper. Colneys first chance of the game came in the 20th minute after a questionable handball decision from the referee gave Colney a free kick just outside the area. Although on target, the shot was comfortably saved by Lewis Todd in the Tring goal. The opening goal of the game went to the visitors in the 24th minute. A long ball over the top of the Tring defence fell to Heath striker John Clemence whose first shot was well saved by Todd. Unfortunately the rebound fell straight back to Clemence who finished into an open goal. It was a difficult goal for Tring to concede made even worse by the fact it had been scored by an ex-player. Colney thought they had made it 2-0 after a deep corner was headed in, but the goal was ruled out by the referee for an infringement on Todd. At half time the score was 1-0 to Colney Heath with Tring knowing that they hadnt been at their best. Tring started the second half quickly looking to find an equaliser. Mulik Rickman volleyed a cross that beat the keeper but not the crossbar. Phil Lowen then hit a fierce shot that was spilled by May, but he recovered quickly to grab the rebound. The key moment of the game came in the 53rd minute after some good work from Matthew Mitchell, he found a cross that fell to Oran Swales, however he could not direct it goal wards. From that Tring attack, a long ball from Colney was played back to Chris Griffin whose first-time strike from 25 yards out found the bottom left hand corner. Again it was a tough pill for Tring to swallow, who had started the second half really brightly and definitely looked the most likely to score. Despite conceding a second, Tring continued to play on the front foot, and they were only denied by good defending and keeping from Colney. A Mitchell free kick was headed goal wards by Jacob Carter only to be tipped over by May yet again. Tring were given a lifeline when a short corner was played to Swales who was bought down in the box. Mitchell dispatched the penalty, hitting the ball hard into the right-hand side of the goal to make the last 15 minutes interesting. Substitutes Dan Ferrigno and Ollie Butler had shots blocked and the final chance came when Phil Lowen hit the ball from a short free kick only for the shot to be blocked and Mitchells effort saved. Clemence saw yellow for a late challenge and that was the last action of the game with Tring losing a tight game where a draw would have been a fair result. Our Opponents

The History of Harefield Utd The club was formed in 1868, making it the oldest club in Middlesex. In their formative years they played under such names as Harefield Victoria and Breakspear Institute in the local Uxbridge Leagues before merging with Harefield FC in 1934 to become Harefield United, playing in the Uxbridge and District League. By 1947 the club had joined the Great Western Combination, playing at Taylors Meadow and winning the league once in the 1950-1 season. In 1964 the club moved to the Parthenon League, winning the league at the first attempt. They then joined the Middlesex League two seasons later where they stayed for five seasons, winning the league title four times and the league cup twice. In 1967-8 the club celebrated their centenary by moving to their present ground at Preston Park in Harefield, joining the Spartan League Senior Section in the 1971-2 season, staying there for four seasons, making their debut in the FA Vase in 1974-5 before progressing to Division Two of the Athenian League for the 1975-6 season. The club also made their debut in the FA Cup in 1979-80. The Athenian League folded in 1984, the year the Hares won the League Cup under manager Nobby Carpenter, making them still the current holders! The club then moved to the Isthmian League Division Two North for two seasons, then spent seven years in Division Two South before being relegated to Division Three where they stayed until after the 1996-7 season when lack of funds for ground improvements meant the club had to move back to the Spartan League. A year later they became founder members of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division South, until it was renamed Division One where they finished runners up and won the League Cup, before playing in the Spartan Premier where they remained until being relegated to Division One at the end of 2015-6. This spell was the most successful in the club’s history winning the Challenge Trophy in 2002-3 and the Premier League Cup the following season when they were also runners up in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Under manager Stuart Leavy the Hares were league runners up twice, in 2006-7 and again in 2008-9 when they missed out on promotion to the Ryman League by one goal difference to Biggleswade Town. In 2002 Harefield United Youth FC was formed with teams from the former Denham Youth FC, the club currently fielding over twenty teams of all ages and levels from Under 7s to Under 21s, Sunday League teams, Under 18s Allied Counties, reserves and first team with some players having progressed all the way through the ranks. In 2010 the club won the National Award for Groundsman Of The Year for Steps 5 and 6, some achievement for a club with no groundsman and the pitch maintained by volunteers. In season 2016-7 the club played five FA Cup ties and won the Middlesex Cup, finishing eighth in Division One.

In season 2017-18 the Hares promoted reserve team coach Brian Keeley to Head of Youth Development with former first team player Ben Payne as his assistant, looking to expand the thriving youth programme further at Harefield. In 2018 United celebrated their 150th year of football in Harefield as a community club promoting senior, junior, Sunday and women's football. The same season 2018-9 Manager Jason Shaw gained promotion in his fourth campaign by going unbeaten all season, only dropping four points and winning 34 consecutive matches, also winning the Middlesex Premier Cup against a strong Cockfosters side. “The Invincibles” now look to start the 2019-20 season back in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division. Here’s to the next 150 years!
