Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects The plight of Bury Town and the gradual demise of Bolton Wanderers, causes me to opine that this situation was fairly predictable. There are simply too many football clubs in this country. The massive increase in TV revenue has encouraged Football League clubs to “Chase the Dragon” in their attempts to dine at the top table. Too many Clubs are largely dependent on TV money. In any business, dependence on one revenue stream is fraught with danger. At TAFC we are working hard to diversify our sources of revenue for that very reason. I made the observation when I joined that the aim was to run an effective business of which football is the main part, but not the only part. The problems at Bolton sadden me. I had trials there as a 16 year old, when Nat Lofthouse was the Manager. As CEO of both Watford and Ipswich Town we had our skirmishes with Bolton, beating them at Wembley in the play-off final with Watford and again in the semi-final with Ipswich the following year. My brother-in-law worked most of his life for Warburons,, who had long standing involvement at Bolton.i got to know George Warburton well. He would be mortified, were he still with us, with the present malaise. Bolton played Manchester United in the FA Cup final in 1958. During the next 61 years the Club has only been in the top flight twice, try as they might to get back there, to share the spoils, but as many Clubs have found, incurring massive debts en route. I remember being at the new Reebok Stadium and George Warburton being almost embarrassed by its lavishness, compared with the old Burnden Park. One wonders whether the current situation is merely the “tip of the iceberg” and a House of Cards will follow?

Match Report Sat 7th Sept 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Crawley Green 2 - 4 TAFC DISCIPLINE IS THE KEY We know from our own painful experience earlier in the season that you cant win a match with only 9 players on the field. Crawley Greens lack of discipline, which resulted in a sending off and a sin bin dismissal, as well as 2 other cautions, significantly contributed to their downfall. On the contrary, we held our discipline and played the match with an intelligent approach arguably the difference between the two sides and surely a lesson for the rest of our season. Todays game wasnt quite the emotional roller-coaster as last seasons 3-4 encounter but it was a decent game, with lots of attacking threats from both sides. It was apparent from the start that Crawleys big centre forward, Ollie Ajigbolamu was going to be a handful and so it proved in the 8th minute when he latched on to a ball through our central defence and thumped it into the net (1-0). We were inclined to play the ball too long, not taking into account the strength of the wind behind us, although Max Mitchell was putting in some nice touches in his deep-lying, flexible role. It was no real surprise when we equalised in the 25th minute because wed looked dangerous with good efforts from Chris Vardy and Dash. The equaliser was a penalty for a foul on Tommy Fletcher, coolly dispatched by Dash (1-1). Chances at both ends over the next 15 minutes with Charlie saving us on more than one occasion with good use of the feet. The woodwork also saved us once but at the other end Dash went close. The next goal was Crawley Greens on the 39th minutes as their tricky winger, Phil Draycott cut in from the left, crossed for Sam Holmes to poke the ball past Charlie (2-1). Minutes later Dash was booked for simulation resulting from a coming together in their penalty area. Most onlookers felt this was harsh on our centre forward. Amidst this episode, Crawleys Tyler Ingham was cautioned for displaying an aggressive attitude. In the final action of the first half there was an altercation between Chris Vardy and Ajigbolamu (pick on someone your own size Chris!), resulting in a caution for both. This was to have significant ramifications later in the game. Within 5 minutes of the restart Crawley were down to 10 men as Ajigbolamu dived in to a challenge recklessly and was shown his second yellow. This proved to be a game changer as, from then on, we were in the ascendency. On the hour mark, we equalised with a glorious goal from Jay Lovell. It came from a corner, won by Ben Johnson, and taken by Max Mitchell. Jay volleyed the ball directly from the corner, showing great technique and giving the keeper no chance as it crashed in to the back of the net (2-2) The wind was now in our sails and you could see only one winner and unsurprisingly within 2 minutes we took the lead with another high quality goal as Daniel Ferrigno turned on to a pass from Max and fired home (3-2). Luke Dunstan almost increased our lead with a mazy dribble in the box. Debutant Louie Collyer replaced Max and in the 30 minutes he played he showed that he will be a real asset. The 10 men went down to 9 as ex Tring Athletic player Chris Crook was cautioned for dissent and sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes. On 70, we went further ahead when Dash put in Daniel with a clever flick and Daniel made no mistake (4-2). At this stage it was game over and you sensed that both teams lost a little shape and focus. Ben nearly capped another fine game with a goal, hitting the post when it seemed easier to score and we sensed blood. But credit to Crawley as, in the face of adversity, they kept on coming and only a goal line clearance from Jay and a save with the feet by Charlie stopped us from having a nervous last few minutes. Jo Naylor and Mulik Rickman replaced Luke and Oran Swales as Kevin rang the changes late on. Well done boys for another comprehensive win, our fourth on the spin with 17 goals bagged. Onwards to Biggleswade and keep up the good discipline lads! Team: Charlie Mann, Ben Johnson, Chris Vardy, Phillip Lowen, Tommy Fletcher, Jay Lovell, Luke Dunstan (Mulik Rickman 80 mins), Daniel Ferrigno, Charncey Dash, Max Mitchell c (Louie Collier 60 mins), Oran Swales (Jo Naylor 80 minutes). Not used Jack Sunderland.

Our Opponents

The History of Potton Utd Potton United were, unusually, formed in Wartime 1943. Although only limited football was played at this time they soon made their mark on the local football scene by winning the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup in 1944. When football returned to normality after the war, United joined the South Midlands League and remained there until 1955. The club then applied to join a London based league but were refused entry so they were forced to take a break from competitive football for one season. They spent a short period in the Central Alliance League before finally joining the United Counties League where they remained in the Premier Division until the end of the 2000/2001 season when they were relegated into Division One. In 2005 Ian Donnelly took over the role of Manager following Dicks close season resignation. At the start of the season many would have settled for a mid table finish but when we went top in October and remained there for the rest of the season, with the exception of one week, it seemed that we would be in for a chance of beating the previous seasons runners up spot. Unfortunately, fate was to strike again and Woodford pipped us to the league title, this time goal difference was the deciding factor. In the cups, they went out of the FA Cup and FA Vase early on but retained the North Beds Charity Cup, beating Wootton 3-1. In season 2006-07 we finished a creditable fourth in the league and reached the Fourth Round of the FA Vase before losing 2 -1 to eventual finalists AFC Totton. We did not win any silverware but reached the final of the North Beds Charity Cup and UCL knock-out cup. Roy Bloxham announced that he would not be able to continue as Manager, for personal and business reasons, and the club appointed 32 year old Dean Chapman as Manager. Unfortunately most of the previous three season’s squad left the club so Dean had the job of rebuilding the side with his cousin Adam Chapman and Kelvin Ash helping him. Graeme Endersby was appointed Manager for the Reserve team with the aim of recruiting local players and encouraging Potton Colts players to move into the Reserves. Three weeks before the commencement of the 2009/10 season Dean Shipp announced his resignation which left the club a big problem, trying to fill the gap so close to the season. We have appointed Tom Galvin and Declan Shilton as joint managers whilst Tom’s father, former Spurs and Republic of Ireland International player, Tony Galvin takes the role of Head Coach. In this season we finished in the bottom half of Division One and were losing finalists in the Bedfordshire Senior Trophy. In September 2010 Tom Galvin wanted to concentrate on playing so Darren Staniforth and Glen Clark were appointed joint Managers. They had a difficult season which finished in 16th place in the league. They have worked hard over the summer to bring in new players for the new season and we have also reformed a reserve side which will be playing in Bedfordshire League Division 2 and managed by Kieran Dempsey and Duncan Field. The season ended with the 1st team finishing 15th in the UCL and the reserves finishing 8th. Over the close season Nicky Stocks has been appointed as assistant manager to the 1st team.
