From the Top

Good afternoon to you all, I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Woodbridge Town to the Grass Roots Stadium. This first round tie of the FA Vase trophy should be a very open and exciting game for all to watch. I would just like to touch on something the Chairman said in his programme notes not to long ago. Non-League supporters come through the turnstiles each week to watch their team, their favourite player, a family member or friend play football. The normal shouting, cheering and depending on which ground you’re at there might be some singing giving the players their full support but it’s away from the field that I would like to quickly touch on. The army of volunteers around all the non-league grounds today many standing amongst you watching the game. Not enough is said about these people the time they give up, the free hours they spend doing jobs around the ground, in the bar or even the lady that washes the kits. Its these people that are the heart of the club the ones that keep the clubs going season after season us managers and players come and go but these people stay each year working hard. So from myself, the management team and the players we thank all the good people here at Tring who give their time up to enable us to do what we love doing each week. Some of you may have seen that we have been given team of the month due to our unbeaten run of 8 games that has now moved to 9. It would be easy to get wrapped up in this, but we know things look different on paper than they do in reality. I feel as a squad we have not really played a good full 90 minutes as a team yet. There have been some great individual performances over 90 minutes from players such a Ben Johnson, Phil Lowen, Louie Collier, Charlie Mann and Charncey Dash to name a few. There have been some great goals, great build up play and some fantastic tackles but we need to bring it all together and ensure that standards remain high. The players to their credit always want to give more and are working hard to put things right and as you can see from some of our results, they are able to turn things around. We just need to start games as fast as we finish them. But I do have to be patient and let this group of players grow as they have only been together 11 games so plenty of time for us to get stronger and get it right. I hope you all enjoy todays game and if you see one of our many volunteers please thank them as without them what would you really be doing today?

Kevin Christou 1st Team Manager #Tringarmy #Believe

Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects We welcome today the Players, Coaches and Officials of Woodbridge Town, for what promises to be an interesting encounter. I know Woodbridge fairly well, having had a spell as CEO of Ipswich Town, when the Club was last in the Premier League. Cup football differs from League competition. There is no room to play the percentages. There can only be one winner. We have stretched the boundaries this season, with six teams from Under 15 upwards. The win in the Eastern Junior Alliance last weekend was encouraging, but running these teams puts pressure on resources and finding more volunteers is a challenge for every Club. Realistically, if Clubs such as ours are to progress, inevitably certain functions will have to be outsourced. We have a committed group of Coaches which meet regularly to discuss issues and priorities. I never cease to be amazed by their commitment and dedication. Perhaps we need a Supporters’ “think tank” to meet, or make suggestions on-line as to how we improve the way the Club is run. Cup matches always draw a higher attendance than normal and I gather that today’s opponents will increase the gate. I must apologise in advance for the inconvenience caused by roadworks around the Stadium. It could have been avoided with foresight and proper planning, but as my father-in-law would have said, “there is nothing common about common sense”!

Match Report Sat 5th October 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

TAFC 2 - 0 Eynesbury Rovers 10 OUT OF TEN AS THE JUGGERNAUT ROLLS ON

Dictionary definition of juggernaut a huge, powerful and overwhelming force. And this is how we must have appeared to Eynesbury. We just kept on coming at them patient, remorseless and, in the end, unstoppable. We had to wait 70 minutes for the breakthrough but another very strong second half performance saw us through against a decent, well organised side which looks set for a top six finish. Their keeper was in fine form in the first half, saving spectacularly from a Max free kick and also from Dash after a great team move. Our keeper was not to be outdone by his opposite number, making a trade mark Charlie leg save to prevent them from scoring. In fact Charlie was (once again) faultless throughout. Goalless at half time and we really upped the pressure in the second half. Dash went near with a header and Jake smashed in a shot from close range which was cleared off the line. When you are on top but cant score you wouldnt think it a great idea to take off your goal scoring centre forward so respect to the management team for, in the 65th minute, they bravely swapped Dash for Frazer who immediately made an impact with his strong, aggressive running. And finally, in the 70th minute, the breakthrough came when, from a corner, after a slight misjudgement by the keeper, Jake rose high and headed in capping another fine display from this highly talented and versatile young man. Whilst on the subject of naming high performers, Jay was outstandingly immaculate. What a tough, composed centre back we have with great game management skills. It wasnt long before we got our second to put the game to bed. Max, our dead ball specialist (who had a fine game finding space all over the pitch and dictating our forward play) fired one in from 30 yards, which took a slight deflection to wrong foot their keeper. So, we have now matched last seasons achievement of ten wins on the bounce. We sit proudly at the top of the table, clear by 5 points and rightly have been awarded the September Team of the Month Award. But we are only a quarter of the way through the season and have plenty of challenges ahead, starting with an away trip to London Colney on Tuesday and then we get a break from league action with our FA Vase match v Woodbridge on Saturday which promises to be a humdinger. We need your support! Finally congratulations to Louie Collier for gaining the September Player of the Month. Good luck back at Kings Langley Louie. We hope to see you back before long! WOODBRIDGE TOWN HISTORY In 1988/89 the Suffolk and Ipswich League Senior Division Championship was won under the management of Bill Riseborough, and it was during this season that Woodbridge applied for membership to the expanding Eastern Counties League. Town were duly accepted into Division One of the Jewson League and for the first season, 1989/90, home games were played at Kingston Field. During the three previous years negotiations had been taking place to secure a new ground and in March 1990 work began on the pitch, changing rooms and clubhouse facilities at Notcutts Park. In September that year Town moved to the new ground and the official opening in October was marked by a floodlit friendly against an Arsenal XI, which attracted a crowd of around 3,000. After managing Woodbridge to respectable mid-table positions in their first two Jewson League seasons, Bill Riseborough resigned in March 1991 and was replaced by Dave Dixon and Les Simmons who steered the team to third place in each of their first two seasons, missing out on promotion in 1992/93 on goal difference. Consolation came with another Suffolk Senior Cup Final victory by defeating Stonham Aspal 5-3. The 2008-09 season began with a new Chairman at the helm with John Beecroft taking over from Keith Dixon who served the club for over sixty years as player, Secretary and for the past three decades as Chairman, A period that saw the club rise from the second division of the Ipswich & District League to the Eastern Counties League Premier Division. In February the club appointed Christian Appleford to replace Glenn Read who resigned his post as the club hovered perilously near the foot of the table but an 18th position was achieved to ensure survival. At the beginning of 2009-10 Mark Scopes took charge and began rebuilding an under strength squad. We flirted with relegation once again but a flourish in March and April earned enough points to rise clear of Wivenhoe Town and away from the threat of relegation. After an inauspicious start in 2010-11 the team prospered to finish in a creditable 10th position. This was again improved in 2011-12 with the club finishing in 6th place, the club's highest finish since 1995-96. This season in 2012-13 the club embarks on its eighteenth consecutive year of Eastern Counties Premier League Football as the longest serving member of the Eastern Counties (Thurlow Nunn) Premier Division, with Mark Scopes starting his fourth season in charge assisted by club stalwart Marty Thorpe. The 2013-14 was a turbulent season for us which saw a number of senior players leave and after a poor start both Mark and Marty resigned from their positions, Sean Clements and Louis Newman took over the reins on a caretaker basis until Lee Elliston was appointed as our new manager. Although Lee recruited a number of players and performances started to improve, he was unable to prevent relegation thus ending our stay in the Premier Division. August 2014 saw us with a new manager in place, Jamie Scales, a local lad who played for the club taking over from Lee Elliston who returned to manage his previous club. Jamie was aware from the start that this would a difficult challenge but could see it as a chance to rebuild and more importantly try to steady the team whilst working without a player’s budget. Over the course of his five years in charge results and performances have improved seeing us continue to improve our final league position each season. Following a fourth place First Division finish in 2016-17, the 2017-18 season was a remarkably successful, completing a magnificent double of winning both the Eastern Counties First Division title, thus securing promotion back into the Premier Division, along with winning the Suffolk FA Senior cup. Last season 2018-19, the club secured its highest ever finish in the Eastern Counties League, finishing in second place in the Premier Division. For the 2019-20 season, Jamie and Assistant Manager Carlos Edwards have managed keep the entire squad together and are once again looking to consolidate our position in the Premier Division.

The FA Vase The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between ‘amateur’ and ‘professional’ footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England. Two-hundred and twenty clubs entered The Vase in its first season but they didn’t include those clubs which had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocated to The FA Trophy. For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley. The first Vase Finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000. Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its ‘elite’ clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two of them. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack. Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals. The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley has hosted 34 finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins. Aficionados of the competition rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the Third Round, but they embarked on a spectacular Vase journey that took them all the way from the First Round to The Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the Dorset side fought back to win 5-3. When the Vase Final returned to Wembley a record 36,232 fans saw Truro City beat AFC Totton 3-1. Whitley Bay, the 2002 winners, achieved a sensational hat-trick of Final victories from 2009 to 2011.. The Northern League have dominated in recent years with success for Dunston UTS, Spennymoor Town, North Shields, Morpeth Town and South Shields although the trophy returned south when Thatcham Town beat Stockton Town in last season's final.
