Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects When I took over from Mick Eldridge BEM, as Chairman, I made it clear that I could not be “another Mick” who had made an extremely wide contribution to the Club and still contributes a great deal.

I did say, that I would try to add value to the running of the Club, if I could. I stated that my intention was to “make the Club a more effective business, of which football is the main part, but not the only part”.

The football side seems to be going well. We are running six teams, the most recent of which is the Under 15 team being coaches by Michael Churchill and Ian Lorimer and playing in a very competitive Eastern Junior Alliance. Last Saturday, the Reserve team fielded 9 teenagers and nobody over 23 years of age. This bodes well for the future.

There are also several local players in the first team, all of whom are setting high standards at that level. Ben Johnson has been “playing out of his skin” this season. Jack Sutherland, Frankie Hercules, Luke Dunstan, Connor Church and Joe Naylor have made significant contributions. Berkhamsted boy, Jacob Carter has shown his versatility in being able to adapt at this level.

We have regular Coaches’ Meetings to ensure we all share the same philosophy of developing talent and providing it with the opportunities to succeed.

We are planning to arrange a Supporters’ Forum in the near future, when you will have the opportunity of meeting Coaches and sharing opinions about expectations as well as suggesting ways of increasing interest and improving communications.

Going forward there is only one thought in my mind, that is going forward. There seems little point in anything in life of standing still. Driving change in my life is a major motivation for me. It always has been. I am rarely satisfied with my own performance. It has not always made me popular, but winning popularity contests has never been of great concern.

Are we all up for the challenges ahead?

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 19th October 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

TAFC 1 - 0 Dunstable Town MATCH REPORT

A TOUCH OF CLASS SEALS THE WIN What an amazing performance! Full of attacking invention, creativity and flair. Enough about the rugby, our own match yesterday was dull and lacked any sparkle at times I thought I was still under the anaesthetic! The term scrappy was invented for this one. However, you should never get complacent about winning and this victory took us to an amazing eleven consecutive league victories. Sometimes you just have to scrap it out and wait for your one chance, which is exactly how it panned out. The only goal of the game, in the 89th minute, was one of high quality, not in keeping with everything that had gone before - a trade-mark Max Mitchell free kick, brilliantly and athletically converted by Jake Carter. Because of our magnificent defence, it was clear that we only needed one goal to take the three points. In league action, this was our fourth consecutive clean sheet and that is a very solid base to build from. If you are an opposing forward, the task of breaching our back four is a tough one, and even then you have to deal with Charlie Mann, who impresses every time out yet another faultless display today. We had one let off early in the second half when Dunstable Towns striker missed something of a sitter, but we had much the greater share of play as the match wore on and we did manage to exert a bit of pressure leading up our goal. Perhaps the reason we were a little disjointed was the number of changes we made to the starting 11, with Kieran Turner making a welcome return to the club and George Brinkman, on his first start of the season. Both players will get better as they settle into the unit, for we know they bring quality and attacking flair. Also making his debut off the bench was Cameron Brooks who looked bright but whose involvement was cut short due to a rib injury, when colliding with their keeper. Also coming off the bench and giving us a little more forward momentum was Frazer John, who had a useful 30 minutes of action. And, of course, you must pay credit to our opponents who worked exceptionally hard, were well organised and highly motivated. This is what happens when you play the league leaders. Added to that was the return to Cow Lane of Chris Stapleton, Seb Smith and Luke Little, to add a little spice. Particularly pleasing was the return of Ryan Sturges, now the Towns Assistant Manager. Ryan was a tremendously popular player in Trings colours, playing more than 200 times for the first team and giving his 100% best on every single occasion. His playing career was suddenly cut short on medical advice and it is great to see him getting so much joy from his new dug-out involvement. We remain 5 points clear and it is obvious that Newport Pagnell and Colney Heath are our challengers for the title. We go to Baldock Town next Saturday and then cup action the following Tuesday. Team: C Mann, B Johnson, J Sunderland, T Fletcher, J Lovell, J Carter, L Dunstan, M Rickman (C Brooks 60m D Ferrigno 70m), G Brinkman (F John 60m), M Mitchell, K Turner.

Our Opponents BROADFIELDS UTD FC - HISTORY

The club was established in 1993, and joined the Southern Olympian League. They were Division Four champions in 1994–95, after which they joined Division One of the Middlesex County League. The following season it was renamed the Senior Division, and Broadfields were champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Despite finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1998–99, they were not relegated. However, in 2003–04 the club finished bottom of the Premier Division again and subsequently left the league. They returned in 2007, joining Division One West. Despite finishing second-from-bottom of the division, they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008–09 season. They withdrew from the league towards the end of the 2009–10 season, resulting in their record being expunged, but returned to the Premier Division for the 2010–11 season. In 2011–12 Broadfields won the Premier Division Cup, retaining it the following season. In 2014–15 they finished fourth in the Premier Division, allowing the club to be promoted to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League. The club were Division One runners-up in 2018–19, earning promotion to the Premier Division.
