Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects As we move into 2020 it is time to look forward and to reflect on what is in store for the Club. Are we committed to progress both on and off the field? We need new floodlights; we need a new stand and we will have to consider whether we can sustain six teams which are dependent on a grass surface. Iam totally convinced of the need to replace grass with a synthetic alternative, the quality of which has improved significantly from the horror surfaces of the 1970s. There would still be a need for a such a surface to be maintained professionally, to ensure that the “grass” remains at the highest quality for the 8-10 years of its warranty. The current FIFA Approved 3g surface provides a real opportunity to generate revenue, especially in the Tring area, as there is a death of 3g pitches. These ambitions require funding and although there are grants available from the Football Authorities, the Club will need to work hard to generate more revenue itself. I know that improving the Club as a business does not sit well with everyone. However, when I became Chairman I made it clear that I would be critical of my own contribution, to be honest about whether I could add value. I have been used to being challenged throughout my career. “If two people agree all the time, one is unnecessary”: Kirsty McNeill and Iain Lorimer have joined the Executive Committee, both of whom have skills which I do not have. An initial challenge is to reform the corporate structure of the Club. The present status as a Members’ Club is not fit for purpose in this day and age. Currently, Members are liable to ensure that the Club operates effectively. Do Members realise that? My overall aim is to help secure the future of the Club and to take the necessary action to achieve this. “To go out on a limb, where the best fruit is, but where the greatest dangers lie!” Are we all up for the challenge?

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 7th December 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

MATCH REPORT NEWPORT PAGNELL F C 0 V TRING ATHLETIC F C 2

PLUS CA CHANGE Discipline is the key, this was the headline in my match report v Crawley Green back in August Teams that are reduced to ten men always lose, I wrote this in my match report v Baldock in September Michael Toner offers us something different, my comments in the match report from our last match v Welwyn. So, another week, another match but these are exactly my thoughts today, looking back on yesterdays match. Not original, but totally relevant. Everything is different but everything remains the same. The lads dealt with a hostile atmosphere, together with an opposition that lost their heads, remarkably well. My notes at half time read, if we finish the game with eleven men we will win the game. We did and we did. The first half was memorable only for the double sending off in the 35th minute. Whilst one can have some sympathy for any player who gets two yellows, sympathy is hard to find when a member of the management team loses it and gets a straight red. This kind of behaviour is unhelpful to his team and merely galvinises the opposition. Well done boys for keeping your cool when others around you were losing theirs. Our excellent second half performance was a result of total focus on the game and the job, and ignoring all the other stuff that was going on. It was a tough match to referee and on reflection his key decisions were all pretty much spot on. We saw another majestic performance from our centre half, as good as Tuesdays. This time not Jay, but Tommy Fletcher who was an absolute rock at the heart of our defence. He handled the free-scoring Jimmy Burnside with aplomb, showing all the qualities of speed, strength and anticipation that we have begun to recognise as Tommys hallmarks. Not far behind Tommy in a superb defence which blocked out the divisions highest scoring team, was Jack Made in Tring Sunderland. Jacks winger was a handful but Jack played him out of the game and even had time for his traditional forward forays, using the skills that made him such an attacking talent in his earlier years, coming through the clubs ranks. A penalty on the hour, after Marcus Mealing has been sent tumbling by a combination of keeper and centre half. Max took a practice attempt first and then smashed an absolute rocket into the top corner with the real one. Play with your heads now lads and see the game through. We did that, and more. Michael Toners left-footed shot after 85 minutes was hit with such power that, if the net hadnt been there it would have landed at Junction 15 of the M1. Keeper didnt move probably shot of the season; if there is a better one I hope I am there to see it! 2-0 and game over. A very important win this at third placed Newport, putting even more distance between us and the pack. It is our fourth win on the trot and we approach matches v London Colney and North Greenford United this week with every confidence. Nearly four hours since we conceded a couple of last ditch Charlie Mann saves keeping that record in tact. So, a great away day. Unfortunately I didnt win the raffle but Daves horse did come in at 5-1! Team: C Mann, J Carter, J Sunderland, P Lowen, T Fletcher, M Toner, L Dunstan (F John 60), D Ferrigno, M Mitchell (M Rickman 80), M Mealing, T Dixon

Our Opponents

Edgware Town FC - History The club was founded in 1939 and played in the Middlesex Senior League until joining the London League (Western Division) for the Division for the 1945-46 season only finishing top of the table but lost the playoff 2-1 against Eastern Division winners, Woolwich Polytechnic. In 1948 they won the Middlesex Senior Cup. In 1963 the club transferred to Division One of the Athenian League. They finished third in their first season, and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1966–67 they finished bottom of the division, and were relegated to Division One. This was followed by a second successive relegation to Division Two as they finished bottom of the table again. In 1972 the club was renamed Edgware. When the Athenian League disbanded in 1984 they joined the London Spartan League, before changing their name back to Edgware Town in 1987. They won the Premier Division of the Spartan League in 1987–88 and 1989–90, and after their second title win, were promoted to Division Two North of the Isthmian League. After league reorganisation in 1991 they were placed in Division Three, which they won the following season. They were relegated back to Division Three in 2001. In 2006 the now-renamed Division Two was disbanded and Edgware were transferred to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League. They won it at the first attempt, also winning the Premier Cup and the Challenge Trophy. The club was promoted to Division One North of the Isthmian League, but folded at the end of the 2007–08 season due to their ground having been taken away from them. In 2013 a small committee joined together including Dan and Anthony Manzi (former secretary to the club), Daz Bloor and Ken Batten (former Chairman to the club) decided to push forward and reform the club by agreeing a long lease for Kingsbury Town's old Silver Jubilee Park (SJP) Ground. It applied and was accepted into the Spartan South Midlands League at Step 6 on 22nd May 2014. Edgware started its home games in that season at underhill while work was being carried out at SJP to lay a new 3G artificial surface.

Promotion in 2105/16 to the SSMFL Premier Division was achieved with only 2 defeats in the season, and a excellent Vase run, that was eventually ended in the 2nd Round by Ipswich Wanderers. Ground Works were completed in July 2016, bringing the capacity up to 1995, with 5 Covered Stands, 2 of which have seats in. New Floodlights were also installed, with the ground gaining a C Grade rating.
