Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects I made a mistake in my last notes in congratulating our groundsman, Daryl Bodimeade for producing a decent playing surface, given the amount of rain that had fallen, not realising that he was on holiday and that Dave Stacey had actually done the work. This was team effort at its finest. Thank you Dave! Last week we had the embarrassment of floodlight failure, ten minutes into our Cup Match against Newport Pagnell. Those of you who have watched the Club for years will be aware that those floodlights are just about “past their sell by date”. The Club engaged Bob Breen Associates to prepare a planning application for new floodlights and this is in process. We are optimistic that we will receive funding from the Football Authorities towards this, but the Club will also have to provide some of the costs. We will keep you posted regarding these developments. We apologise to those who turned up for the match, only to be disappointed that the entertainment was short-lived. We are at that time of year, with uncertain weather, when pitch inspections become common, especially as there is constant pressure to fulfil fixtures, which in operating six teams is a real challenge. It is also a challenge for Dee Vockins, who is responsible for the laundering of all the kit to ensure the teams turn out immaculately. In this regard Ananda Stacey has stepped into the breach, during Dee’s vacation and this is much appreciated. The Australians talk in sport about “sharing the bragging rights” highlighting the importance of team effort. We are well blessed at Tring Athletic FC in this regard.

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 9th November 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Harpenden Town FC 3 - 2 TAFC MATCH REPORT HEARTBREAK AT HARPENDEN Multiple missed chances combined with basic defensive errors gets you one thing beaten. And thats what happened to us today at Harpenden. Firstly, the chances. Decent chances must have been in double figures, but yet we rarely troubled the opposition keeper. We should have been clear and away before ever Harpenden scored their first goal and, reflecting back on the match, it is inconceivable that we had to wait until the 80th minute before scoring. The problem with profligate finishing is that it puts pressure on your defence as an opposition goal, whether a breakaway, a deflection or a worldy puts you on the back foot. Now the defence. It would be unfair to be too harsh because, when Tommy Fletcher went off injured in the 30th minute it meant that we were missing our three first-choice centre backs and our back four was somewhat makeshift. Until that point we looked in control. Still, if we are to compete at the top of this league, we have to deal better with such mishaps as, during the course of a long season, they are inevitable. To ship three goals against a side whose primary tactic was the long ball forward, was disappointing. Harpenden fielded three ex Tring players, which always adds spice. The ubiquitous Chris Blunden and full back Brima Johnson had already played against us this season for other clubs and there was an air of inevitability that last seasons favourite Carl Mensah would have a stormer and would hook a goalbound shot off the line cheers Carl! We dominated from the start and our box-to-box quality was there for all to see, despite the conditions being pretty unpleasant. Oran Swales and Dan Ferrigno were prominent in our forward play. All looked good until Tommy pulled up with a thigh strain and we had to re-organise. This understandably disrupted our shape and we had a few round pegs in square holes, but still we were doing enough good things for the Tring Army to be confident. We went in a goal down when a long cross from our left was headed in at the far post. One became two, after 50 minutes, when Blunden popped up in the box and converted a cross. We did show spirit in the last quarter of the match, creating enough chances during the last 15 minutes to have overturned the deficit. Luke Dunstan converted with class and composure in the 80th minute come on boys, we can do this! Pressing the self-destruct button, within two minutes the deficit was back to two goals when we failed to close down as they attacked us, and we paid the price. Max Mitchells goal, some five minutes from time, was well worked but not enough to prise any points away from the home team. Reasons to be cheerful: 1. We are still top 2. We have a high-quality group of players 3. We have Ben Johnson and Jay Lovell returning from suspension 4. We are not going to have any more suspensions this season 5. The world will look a better place after our victory over Hoddesdon on Tuesday Team: C Mann, J Sunderland, P. Madu, T Fletcher(K Turner) J Carter, P Lowen, L Dunstan, D Ferrigno, O Swales (F John), T Dixon (G Brinkman), M Mitchell

Hoddesdon Town FC - HISTORY 1879

Club founded on 14th April as Hoddesdon F.C., possibly playing on Mansers Field

2014-15 A difficult season ended with a highly successful celebration of the 40th anniversary of the FA Vase win with an international friendly against ASD Acquaviva at Lowfield on 19th April 2015. First Team avoided relegation despite many setbacks through the season, finishing nineteenth, and the Reserves ended up in tenth place having also suffered setbacks during the season. 2015-16 Unquestionably the Club’s most successful season since the Vase win in 1975. Third in the SSMFL, the best League campaign since 1970/71, top of the table for 8 weeks, a Club record-breaking run of four tie wins and seven games in the FA Cup in reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round for only the second time, (four wins, two draws and a replay defeat) and winners of the SSMFL Premier Division Cup. Crowd of over 400 v Brentwood in the FA Cup the largest seen at Lowfield since 1975. Three times winners of the Team of the Month award. Reserves won the Club’s first ever Reserves League title, were beaten finalists in the Challenge Trophy and won the SSMFL Reserves section play-off. Infrastructure improvements including an additional 50-seater stand and two turnstiles, earned the Club an ‘E' ground grading, suitable for Step 4 football. 2016-17 Paul Halsey appointed as Manager in May 2016 after Gavin Kelsey and the bulk of the First team left the Club. A rebuilt side acquitted itself well with a final placing of seventh, a Club record of 93 goals in SSMFL Premier Division football, and retention of the SSMFL Premier Division Cup with a 1-0 win against Wembley at Oxhey Jets. Reserves made a fourth appearance in five seasons in the Challenge Trophy but were beaten 3-0 by a strong Hertford side. Tom Cowell equalled a modern-day Club League scoring record with five of the seven goals scored against St. Margaretsbury. All the ground infrastructure work was finally completed during the course of the season. Bill Moye, Manager of the Vase winning side passed away in March 2017. 2017-18 Manager Paul Halsey walked out in January 2017, and after a short spell of interim management, Simon Riddle took over and was appointed for 2018/19. A final place of twelfth in the table was a relief after much player turbulence over 2 or 3 months. After the season ended, the Club learned it had been moved laterally to the Essex Senior League, thus ending a 34-year association with the (Spartan) South Midlands League. A full appeal hearing at the FA failed to have the decision reversed. The Reserves ended the season 3rd in the Development Division table, but after much consideration, an application was made for the Reserves to join the Herts. Senior County League for 2018/19. A very successful Under-18 squad formed the backbone of the First Team for the final few games of the season. Former Club Treasurer and stalwart supporter, Bob Parker, passed away at the age of 93 in May 2018. 2018-19 A historic season for the Club as the First Team took its place in the 20-club Essex Senior League, and the Reserves once again joined the Herts. Senior County League, this time in an 18-club Division One. Ninth place for the First Team and fourth for the Reserves reflected what was considered to be a satisfactory season for both teams. Having reached the semi-finals of the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy the First Team lost 2-1 to a very strong Barkingside Reserves side, but the Final was not played due to issues that occurred in the other semi-final.
