Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects Change is the only constant in our lives. It is difficult for some to like it, but accept it we must. We just have to try to ensure that individuals do not feel threatened by it.

My ambition for the Club, is to make it the “go to” Club in the area, as an example of good practice on and off the field. To achieve that the Club needs individuals who are signed up to the challenges. We need fresh ideas and we need individuals who are committed to change and are prepared to take calculated to risks in moving forward. “Make big plans that stir the blood”!

That is no to decry the efforts of the past, but standing still is not an option. We are aiming to increase the revenue streams in order to secure the longer term future of the Club. We have talent emerging from our six teams, but we also need the first team to be a winning team.

I asked the Executive Committee some time ago, whether we could’ve knocking on the door of the National League in five, to seven years? Why not; although I suspect there are some, who would rather tick over at the current level. Continuous development is vital in any business and make no mistake, even at this level, it is a business. Once money is taken from the public, it ceases to be “something we do at the weekend when the weather is nice”!it becomes about providing a service.

The decision of Dave Stacey and Barry Simmons to stand down at the end of the season, has focused the need to face up to the reality that football at this level is unlikely to find volunteers to replace them. We will need to pay people to maintain the Club’s operation.

I have been “accused” of trying to turn the Club into Manchester United! I am simply trying to lead the challenge to make the whole experience of being a supporter, a fun and enjoyable experience for all, which appeals to youngsters as well as our diehards. There is a way to go to achieve this.

Please let me know if this is a pipe dream!

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 9th November 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Harpenden Town 3 - 2 TAFC MATCH REPORT HEARTBREAK AT HARPENDEN Multiple missed chances combined with basic defensive errors gets you one thing beaten. And thats what happened to us today at Harpenden. Firstly, the chances. Decent chances must have been in double figures, but yet we rarely troubled the opposition keeper. We should have been clear and away before ever Harpenden scored their first goal and, reflecting back on the match, it is inconceivable that we had to wait until the 80th minute before scoring. The problem with profligate finishing is that it puts pressure on your defence as an opposition goal, whether a breakaway, a deflection or a worldy puts you on the back foot. Now the defence. It would be unfair to be too harsh because, when Tommy Fletcher went off injured in the 30th minute it meant that we were missing our three first-choice centre backs and our back four was somewhat makeshift. Until that point we looked in control. Still, if we are to compete at the top of this league, we have to deal better with such mishaps as, during the course of a long season, they are inevitable. To ship three goals against a side whose primary tactic was the long ball forward, was disappointing. Harpenden fielded three ex Tring players, which always adds spice. The ubiquitous Chris Blunden and full back Brima Johnson had already played against us this season for other clubs and there was an air of inevitability that last seasons favourite Carl Mensah would have a stormer and would hook a goalbound shot off the line cheers Carl! We dominated from the start and our box-to-box quality was there for all to see, despite the conditions being pretty unpleasant. Oran Swales and Dan Ferrigno were prominent in our forward play. All looked good until Tommy pulled up with a thigh strain and we had to re-organise. This understandably disrupted our shape and we had a few round pegs in square holes, but still we were doing enough good things for the Tring Army to be confident. We went in a goal down when a long cross from our left was headed in at the far post. One became two, after 50 minutes, when Blunden popped up in the box and converted a cross. We did show spirit in the last quarter of the match, creating enough chances during the last 15 minutes to have overturned the deficit. Luke Dunstan converted with class and composure in the 80th minute come on boys, we can do this! Pressing the self-destruct button, within two minutes the deficit was back to two goals when we failed to close down as they attacked us, and we paid the price. Max Mitchells goal, some five minutes from time, was well worked but not enough to prise any points away from the home team. Reasons to be cheerful: 1. We are still top 2. We have a high-quality group of players 3. We have Ben Johnson and Jay Lovell returning from suspension 4. We are not going to have any more suspensions this season 5. The world will look a better place after our victory over Hoddesdon on Tuesday , Team: C Mann, J Sunderland, P. Madu, T Fletcher(K Turner) J Carter, P Lowen, L Dunstan, D Ferrigno, O Swales (F John), T Dixon (G Brinkman), M Mitchell

Leighton Town FC - HISTORY

Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War, and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions. Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County League. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27. 2010/2011, saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points, their best performance since joining the Southern Football League. 2011/2012 a poor season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years. 2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place. 2015/2016. After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season. 2016/2017 This was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and we eventually finished in 16th place. 2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA VASE. Gates improved and it was our best season for about 8 years, however Manager, Scott Reynolds resigned at the end of the season. 2018/2019 The Club appointed experienced coach Danny Nicholls as the new Manager, but he resigned at the start of October. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson as their Management Team and results improved but we were unable to reach 2019 We are hoping to be competitive this season with several new signings but this is a very difficult Division and we are well aware of the quality of many of the teams.
