Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects It is that time of year when we should be thinking about things other than football. Yet at the professional level, Christmas festivities tend to end when supporters head off on Boxing Day to watch their respective teams. At our level, we get a little respite, as we do not play on Boxing Day. It is supposed to be the Season of Festivities and good cheer, yet it is not for the less fortunate. At this time of year, we are all inundated with requests from various charities to help those who have difficulties. It is estimated that volunteering within charities is worth over £16 billion per annum. This is laudable, but what a sad reflection on our socalled civilised society that we depend so heavily on charities. We see homeless people in every city and town, which should not be acceptable and it is hoped that which ever government is formed, will take heed of this blight on society. But this is also a positive time of year, when for most people, “family” is important. I think often of the pressures on families, when so many individuals give freely of their time to help sport and sports’ clubs to survive, because without that commitment, which takes its toll on families, many Clubs would go out of existence. I wish you all well for the Festive Season. How often do we hear “Where has the year gone?” Well, as we get older, a year becomes a smaller percentage of our life’s experience. The secret is to enjoy it whilst we can and to show affection for those we might not see too often.

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 30th November 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

MATCH REPORT TRING ATHLETIC FC 5 - 1 LONDON COLNEY FC

FIVE STAR, FIVE GOAL FIRST HALF FLOORS COLNEY High quality football, composure, organisation and clinical finishing were the hallmarks of our first half display. London Colney were taken apart as we blitzed them with an attacking display which, if we can carry it through to the end of the season, will have our title contenders severely worried. It is always good news when your strikers get amongst the goals, as this is their job and what they are in the team to do. So, two goals for Max Mitchell, two for Marcus Melling and one for Terry Dixon mean we have an in-form strike force with goals in their locker. The goals. A penalty converted by Max on 15 minutes after Luke Dunstan had been brought down, a second simple header for Max from a Jay Lovell free kick on 16, Marcus opens his account for the day on 20 from a Max cross, Terry crashes home from a Max pass after 41, and Marcus finishes off the scoring in the first half. 5 goals in 30 minutes and I won the 50/50! Perfect! Well, not quite perfect because we had the disappointment of Jays dismissal just before the break. This is our 5th sending off this season. These dismissals hurt us because, not only is there an impact on the match in question, but the player misses three subsequent matches due to suspension. We cant afford to have such a talented player as Jay sitting in the stand watching the season go by without being involved. The less said about the second half the better. It is difficult to get fired up when the match is over as a contest and we lost our zip and, in all honesty, our hunger. No doubt the Colney half time team talk went something along the lines of Lets go out there and recover some pride. Lets win the second half and they did just that, converting a late penalty for the only goal of the half, and deserve credit for not buckling under. The strength of our bench is an indication of the talented squad we have. Two tough matches await us this week, playing step 4 club Welwyn Garden city in the County Cup on Tuesday and third place Newport Pagnell on Saturday. This time next week we will have a clearer indication as to just how good we are. Come on boys! Team: C Mann, B Johnson, J Sunderland, J Lovell, T Fletcher, P Lowen, L Dunstan (K Turner 60), D Ferrigno (M Rickman 62), M Mitchell (J Carter 55), M Melling, T Dixon.

Our Opponents

Leverstock Green FC Leverstock Green Football Club was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th 1896 in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers. The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timber-built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960s by the existing brick built clubhouse and changing rooms. By the mid 1970s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail and the installation of training lights. The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division – the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years. Finally silverware came our way at the Herts County Ground when we beat London Colney 2-0 in the Herts Charity Shield. The Reserves finished in 12th position in the Suburban League North Division and the Under 18 floodlit team came runners-up in their Southern Counties League Delphian Division.

Season 2013-2014 proved difficult, as having won the first league game the next thirteen were defeats. A rare win in the Premier Division Cup, then defeats in seven out of the next eight league games prompted a change of manager. In came the ex-Rayners Lane manager Dene Gardner who saved the club from relegation and reached the final of the St Mary’s Cup where we were runners up losing by three goals to two to Oxhey Jets. Another milestone was reached as Bill Dawes was recognised by the Football Association and The Hertfordshire Football Association with awards for “50 years service to football” Our last word goes to a club stalwart Jim Matthews Macca as he was affectionately known, who sadly passed away, July 2006 at 90 years of age. His dedication to the club was recognised by the Football Association and The Hertfordshire Football Association by awards for 50 Years Service to Football
