Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects I am conscious that these notes often refer to the importance of change, but it is the only constant in our lives. At TAFC we have replaced the paper programme with an online version, which on average is receiving 140 “views” each week, far more than the paper version, which relied on Barry Simmons’ time and effort. We now have a sponsored team sheet on match days. I have received no adverse comments.

We are soon to replace the website with an updated version, thanks to the efforts of our Commercial Manager, Paul Randell and Martin Pezet, who, until recently, was a student at Tring School. The work of Colin Sturges who produces the original, is much appreciated, as is his help with the new version. In due course, we will be launching an on line shop, and Paul Vockins has been particularly helpful in this regard., in sourcing products. If you look carefully, around the ground you will notice new advertising boards, which are there because Dave Stacey and Barry Simmons give of their time to install them. Pail Randell and I attend the Tring Together breakfast meetings where we promote the Club to Tring businesses, encouraging them on several fronts to support the Club.

When I returned to UK from Hong Kong in 1996, as the first CEO of UK Sport, I could not believe how backward sport was in its support to leading athletes. The lottery, initially was used to support facility projects. I convinced the Government to switch it to grants for individuals, something we had been doing in Hong Kong from 1986. My recent trip to China highlighted how far and fast that country has moved on technologically. It puts us to shame. That the political parties here, seem to think that offering free broadband in ten years will be a vote catcher!

In 1996, I asked a colleague at UK Sport to give me a true picture of a likely response from the Governing Bodies here. “What do we want”? Answer “Gradual change”. “And when do we want it’s.” Answer “In due course”. That remained with me.

If today one looks at the FA Council, of 120 mainly men, most in the twilight of their years, , one wonders where the drive for radical change will emerge. It is not encouraging for the future of the Game.

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 16th November 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

TAFC 1 - 2 Leighton Town MATCH REPORT

SMASH AND GRAB RAID COMMITTED IN HERTFORDSHIRE POLICE SEARCHING FOR SUSPECTS IN DEEPEST BEDFORDSHIRE Sunday morning is a time for calm reflection. I am over the disappointment of defeat; I am over the fact that we had 20 decent chances, they had two; I am over the pain of losing to our noisy neighbours. I am reflecting now on a match that was a credit to step 5 football; a credit to all players and management involved; a credit to the Spartan Football League. The match was high quality, competitive but played in the right way with hardly a bad foul in sight and I am not sure how Mr Trinder managed to caution so many players. Give us a break, officials. Fittingly, the match was won with a stunning piece of skill a free kick smashed home from 20 yards by Danny Webb without the net to stop the ball it was hit with such velocity that it would have reached our top pitch before it came down to earth. How often do we report that the man of the match was the opposition keeper? Well, it was the case again yesterday as Dan Benney produced save after save. But guys, we should have been more clinical and taken this game away from Leighton way before their winning goal. From our side, Kieran Turner stood out, prompting, probing, enticing he was back to his best. It was great also get Jay Lovell back in the back four, providing us with a steely presence which we have missed during his four-match absence. Our goal was the result of some beautiful one-touch football and perhaps we have lost our way in recent weeks in this respect as a neat, short-passing game in the final third unlocked defences at will in our better performances earlier in the season. Max Mitchell finished the move off and is accumulating a decent number of goals scored so far. Can you get us 30 Max I think so.

We walked off at the end, licking our wounds and gritting our teeth at the celebrations in the opposition changing rooms. But this is what happens when you bring down the table toppers. Keep going lads. It must feel as though lady luck is not smiling on us but it will even itself out by the end of the season. There is a long way to go. Team: C Mann, C Brooks, (P Lowen 45) , P Madhu, B Johnson, J Lovell, L Dunstan, J Carter, F John (O Swales 60), M Mitchell, T Dixon (D Ferrigno 75), K Turner

London Colney FC - HISTORY London Colney Football Club was formed in 1907, playing at Whitehorse Lane until moving to its present ground at Cotlandswick, London Colney in 1976. The Club played in the Mid Herts League until the mid fifties, when it joined the Herts County League. The Club has enjoyed many successes over the years with the 1st team winning the Premier Division League 3 times between 1986 and 1990,and the reserves winning the Reserve Division 4 times between 1987 and 1992. Season 2012/13 Saw the side finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division consolidating the improvement under Ryan Thompsons guidance this after a season of unpresidented injuries leaving the squad sadly depleated of up to 10 first team players for most of the season.

Season 2013/14 Saw the side again finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division in what would be Ryan Thompsons last season as manager. After a slow start, the team had a good middle and end to the campaign climbing up the table in the process. Matt Newman also departed scoring 32 goals in his final season with the Blueboys, backed up well by Martin Collins with 17 goals.

Season 2014/15 had seen the start of a new era with Jim Nicholls and his coaching staff at the helm. However due to work commitments, Jim became Chairman and Ryan Thompson came back as first team manager. The club went on a remarkable unbeaten streak during the second half of the season, narrowly missing out on the title by finishing second to Kings Langley.

Season 2016/17 saw the club bring in Joe Sweeney and his team from Chesham. An excellent start to the season meant that the Blueboys went straight to the top of the table, and remained there until the end of the season becoming the Spartan Premier Division champions. The Reserve team also won the Suburban league table to make it a double to remember. The powers that be decided to refuse promotion to the Ryman's League Division 1 which meant 2nd place Hertford Town gained promotion instead. Manager Joe Sweeney and almost all the promotion winning squad left the club after this decision for pastures new. The board also decided they no longer wanted to carry on running the club so unless a new board could be found quickly the club would fold with immediate effect. Season 2017/18 saw a new consortium headed up by Chairman Gareth Davies along with former Peterborough, Watford and Birmingham centre forward Ken Charlery agreeing to become the new custodians of the club which was perilously close to folding. The season started brightly with the Blueboys top of the league after the first 6 games which was a remarkable achievement considering the club had no players with less than 4 weeks to go until the season started. With a very young inexperienced squad (no less than nine under 19s) the early pace could not be maintained and the club finished the season in 13th place while also reaching the semi-final of the League cup before going out to Risborough Rangers.
