Tring Athletic v Oxhey Jets 3.00pm - Saturday 24th August 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

From the Top Learning Curve My first notes for the programme as manager of Tring and I am glad to welcome Oxhey jets to Cow lane they have always been a strong team to play against throughout the years and today should be a good game for both sides. As supporters of the club I am sure you have seen many changes to the squad from last season and I am sure you will get behind this team as much as you did last season. The players are keen to give the supporters something to be proud of this season and push further on from last season. The last couple of weeks have been a learning curve for us as a management team as well as a group of players with a tough opening game against Colney Heath where I felt we were the better side and were very unlucky to come away without anything to show for it, that said Colney Heath defended for their lives with their keeper earning the man of the match. The FA cup was a totally different story the display that the team gave was well below par. We started the game very poorly and were lucky to go in at half time at 1-1. I felt that the team came out in the second half wanting to turn things around and got back on top of the game, We were in full control and until we had a total lack of discipline and had two players sent off and rightly so. With 9 men and an injury putting us down to 8 the game was an uphill fight. As a unit we know that this display was well below the standards of this squad and we had let a lot of people down with the display. Luckily we were back in action a few days later and the players were keen to put things right on the pitch. With a few changes made to the starting XI seeing Mulik Rickman, Jay Lovell and Chris Vardy return to the line up. Jay Lovell going into centre back allowing us to move Jacob Carter into midfield and moving Mulik Rickman into the front 3 with Chris Vardy going into left back. This saw the squad put on a much more fluid performance and maybe should have scored more than we did on the day. The game saw Frankie Herclues making his 1st team debut and on the display he gave its the first of many to come. Let's hope that as a complete team the learning curve is over and we now push on and focus on the next few games coming up. #Tringarmy #Believe

Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects

Discipline plays a large part in sport and football is no exception. The introduction of “sin bins” makes it even more important that players do not show dissent. I have never understood why coaches and managers think that berating referees has any impact on their decision making. Referees make fewer mistakes than players over ninety minutes and it is frustrating when decisions during the match do not go the “right” way. Against Harefield last Saturday, one of their players was sent to the sin bin, it seems for a comment made to the referee, with ten minutes left and it had a profound effect on the score, with two goals being scored in that period. It is a salutary lesson. VAR will provide lots of post match discussion. Manchester City scored, what seemed to be an excellent winner in the closing minutes against Tottenham, but VAR “thought” differently. I think we all want to ensure that the outcome of matches is correct, so referees are themselves presented with different challenges with VAR. The initial reaction from the pundits will no doubt provide more controversy and divided opinion. It may also lead to more opportunities for “exotic” betting – that is to be able to bet on the outcome of VAR! It is a 50-50 call, but it may appeal to some. Personally, I am completely against betting companies being allowed to sponsor sport. In football, we are trying to attract more young people and the profile of betting companies, being seen as a force for the good, is contradictory.

Match Report Sat 17th Aug 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Tring Athletic 4 - 1 Harefield United JOE NAYLORS BRACE HELPS US TO THREE POINTS After losing our opening league game against Colney Heath we got ourselves back on track with a solid win over Harefield United with 2 goals from Joe Naylor and a goal a piece from Max Mitchell and Luke Dunstan. The result suggests this was easy pickings but that was far from the case as the visitors were a tough proposition and the victory was only assured in the last 10 minutes when Harefield hit the self destruct button by getting one of their players sent to the sin bin. With the likes of Dash, Mann, OConnor, Ferrigno and Swales all missing for one reason or another new Manager Kevin Christou was forced to make a few changes and he would have been delighted to see it bare fruit so quickly with Joe Naylor, who was making his first league appearance of the season, opening the scoring after only 2 minutes. After an encouraging start to the game Joe Naylor swung the ball over from out wide on the left and the ball sailed over the opposition keeper and into the top far corner of the net. There may have been an element of good fortune about the goal but no doubt Joe would claimed it was a shot and not a cross! Score 1-0. Harefield were returning to the Premier Division after a 3 year absence, winning promotion after a magnificent season in Division 1 where they notched up 110 points and dropped only 4 from 38 league games to run away with the title. They found the net 125 times and their line up included 4 players who between them bagged 101 goals last season, so they were clearly a team to be feared. After the early set back they started to get into their stride and had much the better of the game up to half time, looking lively and dangerous on the attack. We were not playing our usual fluent football, and some credit must go to the opposition for that, but we defended well and Lewis Todd in goal was not overly stretched. At the break we retained our slim one goal lead. HT Score 1-0. We got another early boost when 4 minutes into the second period we were awarded a penalty for handball. It was one of those decisions that can go either way but luckily it went in our favour. Max Mitchell kept his cool to despatch the spot kick and maintain his remarkable record of scoring in his first 4 games for the Club. Score 2-1. However, Farhall went from hero to villain in the 79th minute when he was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes. We took full advantage of our numerical superiority by extending our lead 7 minutes later with a superb goal conjured up by two local youngsters. Ben Johnsons (aged 20) created the opportunity with a magnificent long raking pass from the right back position that picked o ut 21 year old Joe Naylor who controlled the ball superbly before calmly slotting it past the keeper. Joe has been a great servant to the club playing over 200 games over 5 seasons and its great to see him on the First Team score sheet. Score 3-1. This goal took the wind out of Harefields sails and three minutes later Luke Dunstan nailed the win when he headed home Alex Wards fine free kick at the far post. Score 4-1. The visitors will feel with some justification that the score line did not truly reflect the game but we were unlucky to lose against Colney Heath so perhaps it was our turn to get the rub of the green. Finally we should mention that Frankie Hercules made his First Team debut as a second half substitute. Frankie comes from a well known footballing family, his brother Max played for Athletic and of course his dad Cliff knew a thing or two about playing and scoring goals. He has only just turned 18 and he showed some lovely skills and will be a player to watch in the future. Goals: TA:Joe Naylor (2, 86), Matt Mitchell Pen (49), Luke Dunstan (89) HT:Lenny Farhall (67)

Our Opponents The History of Oxhey Jets The current General Manager John Elliott founded Oxhey Jets in 1972. Playing their first season as an under 12 team in the South West Herts Youth League, having been playing friendly matches as the 2nd Oxhey Boys Brigade team for two years before that. A winning start in the League cup final on the last game of the season saw the club move on, and more youth sides were added to the clubs structure, with the original side moving up through the age groups. In the 1978-79 season the team having out grown youth football moved to the Watford and District men’s Saturday league, and at the first attempt won the Division one championship without dropping a point, this prompted an application to the Hertfordshire Senior County League, which was turned down because their home ground was an open playing fields. We instead went into the West Herts Saturday league, and started to prepare the old school pitch at the Chilwell Gardens site ready for another application to join the County League. Chilwell was ready for use and the runners up spot was secured with Three matches to spare, and became the first Oxhey side in history to win The Watford Peace Memorial Shield.

Our managers Tim O’Sullivan and Pat Fallon in the 2018-19 season took us to 9th position in the league which was our highest finish since 2013. The last match of the season saw us in the final of the West Herts FA St. Mary’s Cup where we narrowly lost by the only goal of the game to Berkhamsted. The rebuilding continues. The reserve team were our team of the season winning the Herts FA Intermediate Cup at the County ground beating Royston Town Reserves by 2 goals to nil. They finished as runners-up in the Herts County League Senior Division and also reached the final of The Aubrey Cup where they lost by the odd goal in 3 to premier division runners-up New Salamis who next season will be playing their football in the Spartan South Midlands division one. Next season is eagerly awaited as our reserves have been promoted to the HSCL premier division.

Squad Bio’s Matt Evans - Goalkeeper 28 year old super short range shot stopper with a tendency to save penalties in important games! Previous clubs: Tring Athletic, Sun Sports & Leverstock Green Harry Beaumont - Defender/Midfield Right back that suffered some injury problems last season, but back to full strength now Joined Oxhey Jets in 2013/14. Previous club: Sun Sports Scott Bonner - Central Defender/Midfield Top stopper, very good in the air and capable of playing in midfield too. Nickname: Caveman. Previous clubs: Leverstock Green, Sun Sports, Berkhamsted, Kings Langley, Team Solent Tom Gibson - Defender Left back and club captain, nicknamed “Chucky” like the doll for his manic laugh!! A rock in midfield who doesn’t tickle when he tackles! Previous clubs: Chesham United

Our Opponents Squad Bio’s (Cont.) Brad Thompson - Defender Brad has been with Jets since 2016 but only played one match for the first team last season. Back with a vengeance and willing to fight for his place Jamie Speer - Defender “Mr. Versatile”. Attacking right back, can also play in midfield and on his second spell with Jets after a solitary season with that “other” Watford non league team. Previous Club: Sun Sports Gary Wallace - Defender “Gazza” or “G-Wal” had a few splinters on his bum spending time on the bench last season, but fought to become a main member of the team. Club Man of the season 2018/19. Has the ability to be a stopper or cover player. George Hobson - Midfield George brings more bite than bark into midfield. They say that he once went into a McDonalds, asked for a Burger King and they got him one!! Previous clubs: Sun Sports, Leverstock Green Luke Preedy - Midfielder New signing for the club after becoming a local legend for Leverstock Green, a mainstay there for five seasons. We hope that he will soon become a Jets legend! Previous clubs: Northwood, Leverstock Green Kyle Clifford - Midfielder Another new signing for Jets. Previously with Amersham Town Andrew Brennan - Midfield “Brenners” is a midfield maestro and a Jets legend who has played for Jets for the majority of his career. This is his third spell with the club. Previous clubs: Sun Sports, North Greenford United Carlos Simao - Midfielder Another newbie to the Jets, Carlos is a tricky winger who loves to bamboozle with his feet Andre Lopes - Midfield/Forward Known as “The Portugeezer”. A Wealdstone youth player for six years. Reserves player of the season 2018/19 and ressies top scorer with 22 goals - snapped up by Tim O’Sullivan for the first team for this season. Reece Cameron - Forward 22 years old and another new signing this season from Levy. Powerfully-built forward, versatile in attack, he can play as a central striker or on the wing, with some of his most eye catching performances coming from wide positions. Previous clubs: Colney Heath, Aylesbury United, Chesham United, Leverstock Green Nick Kerley - Forward Jets‘ Goal getter. Last season’s top scorer with 23 goals, and we won’t mention the two missed pens!! Previous club: Hatfield Town Vagnol Kediambiko - Forward "Vags" is a new arrival to the Jets this season and is a unit and a half. Continues to claim his first goal for the club from Saturday's 3-3 draw with Arlesey Town even though it looked like the keeper knocked the ball into his own net - But who in their right mind will argue with Vags?!!!
