Tring Athletic v Wembley FC 7;45pm Tuesday 10th March 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Grassroots Talk. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Wembley FC along with our match officials and hope they enjoy their brief spell with us. It has been over four weeks since our last home game and we have faced some tough opponents since that fantastic start to life going back to our origins. Touch games and disappointing results but not performances. Only losing late on to inform North Greenford. Going two goals up at The Vase quarter finalists Leighton Town before tiredness got the better of us. Losing by the odd goal against Champions elect Colney Heath. Saturday’s loss at Oxhey Jets was a bit of downer but they are always a difficult side to play against and are in the top five.

When the club was formed back in the late fifties, it was to provide football for the local youth in a break away from Tring Town. This will be the ethics we have returned to. Giving local players the opportunity to play for their local club to a level they are capable of and within the financial means of the club. We would like to Thank Chris Juraszak, James Shaw ,Cliff Hurcules and all the players from The Reserves, A Team and Youth side for stepping forward and taking up the challenge.

We would also like to thank all of our supporters for turning up on that first Saturday and making the club feel ‘’Good’’ again. Our biggest crowd of the season so far. Also all the messages of support from friends old and new within the footballing community are very much appreciated. Lastly our sponsors, who have also supported our stance and I am sure will benefit from this going forward. We know that there may be some tough times ahead. But with your support and enthusiasm, we know we can make the Town proud of this club. We also want to provide players and supporters alike more social events and we start on March 28th with a race night. Please come and support this and any other event s planned.

Match Report Sat 7th Mar 2020 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Oxhey Jets 2-0 TAFC First team Oxhey Jets (1)2.Tring Ath (0)0 First of all the excuses/reasons. In the 24 hours before the game we lost Kevin McManus, Stepen Ebonine and Paolo Bagatti. On top of that Connor Blake and Will Salmon played whilst not being 100% fit. We were also on the wrong end of 2 penalty decisions not given, one in each half. Having said all that the players were told before the game we had no more "free hits" and though there is an amount of goodwill remaining if they expect to play at this level they have to prove they can. Unfortunately, too many didn't! Oxhey Jets are one of a number of strong well set up teams in this Division who had beaten Colney Heath and this was their 6th straight win so confidence was high. Over the 90 mins Oxhey were good value for the win and in the first half they started well and scored in the 5th minute when they outflanked down our right hand side and although Dave Saunders parried the initial shot he could do nothing about the follow up. Within 10 mins we had a couple of chances to equalise when Clem Asante just failed to lift the ball over the keeper and then had a strong shout for a penalty turned down. Joe Naylor then cut in and curled a shot over the junction of the far post and crossbar. But that was it for 45 mins. To be fair Oxhey were much better than us for the first 25 mins and either dragged us up the pitch when playing short from ex-Tring Ath custodian, Matty Evans in goal, or when they went long we weren't decisive enough in winning first and second balls and either moved the ball too slowly or played across a pitch which was, not surprisingly, sticky. Our opponents made far more correct decisions and having hit the bar they were very good value for a half time lead, indeed potentially we could have been 2 or 3 behind. We had improved after the half hour but all this did was stem the tide. Having asked questions of ourselves as a Management team we asked the team to press high onto the Jets defence and this together with the fact they were leading meant they were longer on virtually every occasion. We now had our fair share of possession and were a touch unfortunate when a Joe Naylor cross was spilled only for it to go just past 2 forwards waiting for a tap in. We certainly weren't dominating but also restricted Jets to the odd cross or long distance strike. To show how new this team is we introduced 2 Club debutants, Melvy Nsomi and Callum Shortt who both did well and Callum set up a good chance for Jack Sunderland who scuffed his short wide. With 10 mins left we combined to give a second goal away when a clearance was played down the middle, instead of wide, we failed to, win the first ball and their lively centre forward scored. Score 2-0. Ollie Butler who filled in manfully at the back put a header over the bar and Jack Sunderland wasted a good opportunity to put in a decent cross with 2 forwards waiting and the referee blew the whistle on our poorest performance to date.

Write this one off, hopefully after 4 consecutive away games we can turn a receding corner at home on Tuesday against Wembley. Team: D.Saunders. M.Habashi, O.Butler, L.Barkers-Obua, J.Cowan, W.Iroegbu (J.Sunderland), W.Foley (C.Short),C.Blake, W.Salmon (M.Nsomi); J.Naylor, C.Asante.

Our Opponents A SHORT HISTORY OF WEMBLEY FOOTBALL CLUB WEMBLEY FOOTBALL CLUB was formed in 1946 following an amalgamation of various junior clubs, predominantly Sudbury Ratepayers Association and Sudbury Rangers. Nicknamed the 'Lions', (the symbol of the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley in 1924/25, the emblem was also used by the local speedway and ice-hockey teams), they found a home at Vale Farm and have remained there ever since, developing a roped-off pitch into a respectable non-League football ground. Entry was immediately made into the Middlesex League. After finishing a creditable fourth in their first season they went on to win the championship in 1947/48. A further season was spent in this league before the Club progressed into the Spartan League in 1949/50. Here they stayed for two years, clinching the Western Division title in 1950/51 as a result of which they became founder members of the Delphian League.

Both finals were lost although the disappointment was tempered by beating Brentford at Griffin By claiming third place, a quick return to the first division was achieved a season later, but their division one tenure lasted just two seasons and they relegated again at the end of 1998/99. As a result of the restructuring of the Isthmian League's constitution, Wembley regained a berth in the first division (north) for the 2002/03 season. But they were unable to maintain their place and were demoted into the second division at the end of that campaign. Wembley were forced to leave the Isthmian League set-up at the end of the 2005/06 season following the disbanding of the second division. They joined the Combined Counties League. A sterling effort was made to win promotion during their first season (2006/07), but ran out of steam to end the term in the third place. Apart from that, they failed to make a real impact, although they did reach the final of the Combined Counties League Cup in 2010/11, but lost to Sandhurst Town, 0-1, at Farnborough. However, after their participation in the following season's F.A. Cup, (their Extra-Preliminary Round tie with Ascot United was covered live on Facebook) the competition sponsors, Budweiser, offered the Lions a much-publicised deal which they could not refuse. This included the signing of several retired professionals to help the Lions progress as far as possible in the 2012/13 F.A. Cup under the guidance of Terry Venables. Unfortunately, Wembley only played three games in the competition before bowing out. After eight years, Wembley's membership of the Combined Counties League was ended by a lateral move across Step Five of the non-League pyramid, They are commencing their sixth year in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division after j oining in 2014/15, finishing last season's campaign in twelfth place.

News from some of our other sides

Saturday 7th March Champions Cup Final Tring Athletic Res 0-1 Metropolitan Police Res The reserve side lost out in this cup final, going down by a single goal to Met Police. As with the first team, this is a very much changed side as players have moved up to the first team. However they put in a good display and can count themselves unfortunate to lose

Mean while, on Sunday, The Under 15 side had another good win in The EJA League. They beat a good Cockfosters side 2-0

The Midweek under 18 side are still top of their league with 3 games left to play. They will be hoping to finish the season as champions.

Goal of the Month

GOAL of the MONTH Sponsored by

Colney Heath 3-2 Tring Athletic Saturday February 22nd On a windy day the Gods of Football failed to smile on Tring Athletic, who fell to a narrow defeat to league leaders and prospective champions Colney Heath when the last of three mistakes resulted in a 3-2 defeat. In the 75th minute following yet another unnecessary free kick given away wide on the right hand side of the box by Prince Nimoh, resulted in our custodian looking to catch and clear a poorly taken free kick to our front 3 took his eye off the ball allowing Spencer Clarke-Mardel to poke into an empty net. The game had kicked off with Colney Heath playing down the slope with the wind at their back. It was generally scrappy caused by the tricky conditions and Colney Heath had more possession On 23 mins our opponents played a quick free kick behind Gareth Terblanche and Wes Iroegbu gave away a foul 2 yards from the goal line by the corner flag. The ball was delivered and bobbled across the area for ex -Tring striker Chris Blunden to finish. By now debutante forward Stephen Ebonine had started to impose himself on the game and proved a handful. David Saunders made a tremendous save from a long range strike and we generally dealt well with what was thrown at us. On 43 mins Prince Nimoh played Joe Naylor in from the right. He beat a defender on the edge of the earlier and with his left foot beat Connor Samson ( ex -Tring Ath) to allow us to go in at half time on par. With the wind and slope behind us there was no reason why we couldn't now start to dominate and within 2 mins Prince Nimoh hit a long range shot which just cleared the bar. Within 8 mins there was a failure to stop a cross from our left back position and after a couple of miss kicks, Spencer-Mardell scored the first of his brace. On 56 mins a well delivered Wes Iroegbu corner was magnificently headed home by Joe Naylor and now it was a genuine 50/50 game. In truth apart for a half chance for sub Clem Asante and a couple of runs by Joe Naylor not much was created. The same could be said for our opponents who although they strung a few passes together going uphill didn't seriously threaten .We decided to go for the win rather than settle for the draw even before the Colney Heath 3rd . Once it had gone in we changed to 4-4-2 and pushed bodies forward at every possibility but only a well delivered Miles Habashi corner failed to penetrate and the whistle went on yet another narrow defeat. Again I'm loathe to criticise but we gave away at least 12 free kicks in the second half, some are inevitable but that many is not acceptable We have to train hard during the week and hopefully get the show back on the road for the 4th of consecutive away games at Harefield Utd next Saturday.
