EarthCheck Trinidad & Tobago – Greening local hotels Trinidad and Tobago is doing its part to ensure a greener, cleaner world and the sustainability of our tourism industry through the implementation of international environmental certification programmes. Recognising the need to protect the environment while increasing revenue generating opportunities for local tourist accommodation properties, the Tourism Development Company Limited, in collaboration with the Trinidad Hotels, Restaurants and Tourism Association, is piloting a project to help local hotels gain green certification. Six hotel properties are currently working towards improving their operations through the implementation of criteria under EarthCheck Certification, an environmental certification programme for the travel and tourism industry. To be EarthCheck Certified, properties must lessen their overall impact on the environment through reduction in energy and water consumption and the implementation of recycling programmes. The EarthCheck programme was first implemented in the Caribbean in the latter 1990s as a component of the Green Globe 21 Certification programme. EarthCheck has since become an independent certification programme, providing guidelines to sustainability on the basis of benchmarking environmental performance and continuous improvement. Trinidad and Tobago aims to have the following six (6) properties EarthCheck certified: • • • • • •
