Welcome Welcome to our 10th issue of Zanshin. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the Instructors for what they have been doing for the karate students during the past year. I know well all the patience, the time and dedication it takes to be a karate instructor. The IKD as you know, have taken up the challenge of using the art of karate as a tool for development of people, young and not so young. We seek to promote the way of Peace by the practice of healing first the fractures or separations within ourselves. Only when we heal those fractures within us, can we hope to heal the fractures in our world. We remind ourselves, that this is done by our continuous practice of uniting Mind, Body and Spirit. When we do this effectively, there is a power, a Kime that emanates through us which has a positive effect on others. Yours Sincerely
Shihan Wesley Dexter Shim Chairman & Chief Instructor TKA (IKD)

Seniors bask in the glow of the I want to share this poem with you all.
newly earned ‘Yellow Belt’
I first heard it in the movie 'Coach Carter'. It is a great reminder for us to not forget that the IKD practice of Karate is about saving lives! May it inspire all parents, students, supporters and Instructors to live fully during the coming year! My wife, Sensei Frieda joins me in wishing you all a Very Happy New Year full of wonderful possibilities. Shihan Shim
Our Greatest Fear by Marianne Williamson Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure.
Phillip Colthrust
It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, We consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear,
Ronald Boynes
Our presence automatically liberates others.

world in general. For the parents of pee-wees, we can use the newsletter to celebrate your child’s successes in nonKarate activities because we are one family and we share in each others’ joys and pains. My personal wish is that the TKA will dominate all of the TTKU tournaments this year, both in the number of participants and number and type of medals. TTKU national tournaments normally take place around March and November so this year I encourage all parents to assist me in seeing my wish come through. We wish each and everyone success in 2013 as we prepare mentally to train hard to achieve whatever objective

Feature >> What is Karate? “In the Beginner’s mind the possibilities are endless; in the Expert’s mind the possibilities are few. Learn to use the Beginner’s mind.” Shunryu Suzuki (Zen Master)
The word karate is Japanese for "open or empty hand": kara means open/empty te means hand. Te signifies that your main weapon is your body. Instead of using swords or guns, the Karateka (person who practices Karate) cultivates a personal arsenal of punches, kicks and deflection techniques to make them better equipped to handle any attack.
As stated by Master Gichin Funakoshi ("Father of Modern Karate"), “In Okinawa, a miraculous and mysterious martial art has come down to us from the past. It is said that one who masters its techniques can defend himself Gichin Funakoshi Father of Modern Karate readily without resort to weapons and can perform remarkable feats: the breaking of several thick boards with his fist or ceiling panels of a room with a kick. With his shuto ("sword hand") he can kill a bull with a single stroke; he can pierce the flank of a horse with his open hand; he can cross a room grasping the beams of the ceiling with his fingers, crush a green bamboo stalk with his bare hand, shear a hemp rope with a twist, or gouge soft rock with his hands.” The above statement from Master Funakoshi provides some insight and explanation of the basic concept of Shotokan karate and the ability to defend oneself with the bare hand. Developed on the island of Okinawa, Japan, from indigenous fighting methods called “te,” this system of combat allows you to defeat an opponent by the use of strikes and blocks.

>> TKA Events TKA Camp and Open National Tournament CAMP Chinese Association: 22nd to 23rd February, 2012 The Camp will feature world- renowned IKD certified Instructors. The Objectives of the Camp are as follows: To receive specialized instruction, utilizing trained and experienced personnel from the Caribbean, on various aspects of Karate. To allow Karatekas the opportunity to train together, network, foster and sustain friendships within the Karate community To serve as a fund-raiser to off-set some of TKA’s expenses A brief bio on the main Instructors, Shihans Alice and Paul Bernstein and Sensei Cameron King. Shihan Alice Bernstein, 7th Dan She was one of the first students of the Barbados Shotokan Karate Club (BSKC), founded in 1978. Her dedication to hard intensive training earned her the rank of Shichidan from the ISKF. A seasoned competitor, instructor and trustee of the BSKC, she is a graduate of the ISKF Instructor Program and holds the designation of International Karate Daigaku A-Class Instructor, A-Class Judge and A-Class Examiner. Shihan Alice has been awarded BSKC "Instructor of the Year" in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and continues to teach and mentor students of the club. She is also the highest ranked woman within the Caribbean Region where she is very highly respected for her karate knowledge, physical ability and caring, motherly nature. She is the embodiment of the Dojo Kun practicing what she preaches. Shihan Alice has a long and distinguished tournament career both at the regional and international levels. Although petite in stature, she is well known for her exceptional fighting spirit. During a Caribbean kumite tournament in the 1980s, she suffered a dislocated shoulder. Rather than quitting and despite being in a great deal of pain, she popped it back in place and continued her kumite match with one arm to win first place. In training, she is able to keep pace with men half her age. Like all members of IKD Shihan-kai, Alice has trained with many Japanese masters, including Master Nakayama who visited Barbados and dedicated the dojo to Martial Arts training. Alice is a ranking member of the IKD Shihan-kai.

Shihan Paul Bernstein – 7th Dan Shihan Bernstein started karate in January of 1973. He is a founding member and trustee of the Barbados Shotokan Karate Club and has been a major influence in the development of karate as well as the club over the years. He is a graduate of the ISKF Instructor Program and now holds the designation of International Karate Daigaku A-Class Instructor, A-Class Judge, and A-Class Examiner. For the last 28 years, he has been elected President of the Barbados Karate Association. This shows his leadership abilities and rapport with his members and students. Shihan Bernstein is a Justice of the Peace as well as a former Barbados Senator. In 2011, he and President David Clarke, acting in place of the Reverend Father Compton Meerabux, S.J., administered the Oath of Office to the Chief Instructor and Deputy Chief Instructors of IKD. As well, they both presided at the unanimous passing of a Special Resolution by all member countries electing the masters to their Offices. Apart from his teaching ability, his administrative skills have led to the success of the BSKA and the development of karate in Barbados. His contribution to karate has resulted in Barbados as a karate 18 power house. He played a major role in building the BSKC, the first permanent dojo in the Caribbean. He is a valued member of the IKD Shihan-kai and a great public relations officer. He and Alice have one son Shaun, who is not only a medical doctor and surgeon, but also a black belt.
Sensei Cameron King Sensei King is the current IKD senior Kumite and Kata champion. He began his Shotokan training in 1987 and was a member of the Barbados national team during the period 1993 - 2009. During that period, he captured many titles at the Caribbean, PanAmerican and World levels, including two-time Kumite Champion at the Pan-American Games and Kumite Champion at the ISKF World Championship. He also received a Minister of Sports award in Barbados. He is currently the Caribbean Kumite Champion, a Kenshusei instructor with Class D qualification, a class D Examiner and an International B-Class Judge.
