By Rev Leighton Carr Assistant to the Archdeacon of Lambeth

THE REDEVELOPMENT from WEST TO EAST NINE ELMS VAUXHALL - WEST: BATTERSEA & RIVER FRONT The redevelopment of Battersea Power Station has been the key to redeveloping the Opportunity Area.

The Power Station site covers 42 acres and will provide 4,000 new homes and 3 million square feet of commercial, leisure and cultural space. The project will be completed in 7 phases, with the first residents moving in during 2016. By 2019 the Power Station will be opened to the public and by 2020 the new tube station will be operational.

Sir Norman Foster and American architect Frank Gehry have been appointed to design buildings in the most difficult area behind the Power Station (right top and right bottom respectively)

NINE ELMS VAUXHALL - CENTRAL: EMBASSY & NEW COVENT GARDEN The new American Embassy is the dominant building in the central area with a significant presence on the Linear Park. The area around the new American embassy will provide around 2,000 new homes, over 500,000 sq ft of office and flexible workspace, a Heath and Well Being Centre, hotel, bars, shops and restaurants. The proposed New Covent Garden Market

First residents have already moved in to the Riverlight development (above left).

The redevelopment of the New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) on a more compact area will release over 20 acres of land for other uses, including 3,000 homes, community spaces and retail areas.

NINE ELMS VAUXHALL - EAST: VAUXHALL TALL BUILDINGS CLUSTER Vauxhall has been designated as a location for tall buildings. Over a dozen tall buildings of up to 50 storeys are proposed. The area will become a district centre, providing offices, retail and leisure space, and accommodation for up to 7,000 new residents. The impact of tall buildings on St Anne’s church in South Lambeth is seen in the image below which shows the intensive development of the BT site adjacent to St Anne’s
