Trinity students Hugo Ramambason (2014), Imogen Grant (2014), Millie Perrin (2014) and Reggie Mitchell (2017) competed in the 164th Cancer Research UK Boat Races in March 2018, which saw a clean sweep for Cambridge.
In a special ceremony on The Backs, Free Object, a 10 tonne sculpture by Sir Antony Gormley (1968) was installed for one year as part of the celebrations marking 700 years since the College’s early foundations. The work was the first installation of a piece of modern sculpture at Trinity.
The Wren Library hosted an exhibition of rare books by renowned Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, which are part of the Kessler Collection of Artists’ Books, donated to the Library by the late Nicholas Kessler (1955), who studied Economics and Law.
ALUMNI NETWORK
WOMEN OF TRINITY
GLOBAL AWARENESS
The College established a new regional alumni group Trinity in Hong Kong, thanks to founding members Tzo Tze Ang (1997), Dominic Chan (1988) and Jessie Zhang (2001). Trinity in Hong Kong will enable alumni in the region to meet regularly and to network easily.
Astrophysicist Professor Priya Natarajan (1993) (above) delivered the inaugural Women of Trinity Lecture ‘Mapping the Heavens’ on 14 March 2018, as part of the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of women’s arrival at Trinity.
The 2018 Climate Change Lecture Series of five free events was live-streamed around the world. Co-founded in 2017 by Dr Hugh Hunt (e1990) (above right), CCLS’ key objectives are to engage young people globally and to showcase Cambridge as a fertile hub for climate-change thinking and action.

Trinity committed £30,000 to Target Oxbridge for 2018, to enable more 16–18 year-old students of African and Caribbean heritage to benefit from an innovative and invaluable one-year programme of residential visits, academic sessions and mentoring.
The Cambridge papers of Sir Isaac Newton, including his notebooks and an annotated copy of Principia Mathematica at Trinity, were added to UNESCO’s International Memory of the World Register, for their “world significance” and “outstanding universal value.”
CANCER RESEARCH
AA MILNE AT THE V&A
INNOVATION
Professor Greg Hannon (e2016) was appointed Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. Professor Hannon is internationally recognised for his contributions to cancer biology and has developed widely used tools for the manipulation of gene expression and approaches to selective genome sequencing, now being used to inform personalised medicine.
Trinity Fellow and alumnus A A Milne’s manuscript of Winnie-the-Pooh was loaned to the Victoria & Albert Museum for its blockbuster exhibition Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic. The manuscript was bequeathed to the College by the author, along with the manuscript for The House at Pooh Corner.
Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald (e2002) (above right) was named one of 50 Movers & Shakers in BioBusiness 2017, an award celebrating women driving healthcare innovation. Professor Fitzgerald developed the Cytosponge – or ‘pill on a string’ – to more easily detect the early signs of oesophageal cancer, which is notoriously difficult to diagnose.
Trinity hosted a high-level Argentinian delegation of politicians, business leaders and civil society practitioners, academics, Cambridge University leaders, and representatives from government and civil society for the Women and Global Leadership Forum. The Forum was organised by Trinity’s Post-Doctoral Society, Trinity Fellow, Dr Mireia Crispin (e2015), and Global Shapers Cambridge Hub, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.

The Chair’s Report
The Chair’s Report 2017–18 has been an exceptionally good year. More of you have given than ever before (14.1%, 1892 donors), contributing to a total amount in new gifts, legacies and pledges (£27.6m) which exceeds anything received by the College in living memory. Since our work is not just about raising funds, it is also good to report that we have seen more of you than ever before at our events in Cambridge, London and beyond.
The gifts we have received, both large and small, enable the College to do what you might call our ‘core business’ better, as well as to embark on new undertakings. Teaching and research, pursued hand in hand, remain at the centre of the College’s work. That has been true for centuries (and hopefully will be true for centuries to come); but the challenge of maintaining our pre-eminence by attracting and supporting the most promising students, regardless of their financial means, is ever growing it seems, affected by changes in funding here in the UK and by the ambitions of other institutions across the globe. In maintaining the College’s standing, we need to do more; and over the course of this year we have been able to establish new studentships thanks to the support of Mrs Elizabeth and Mr Bruce Dunlevie (1977), Dr Tom Howat (1999), Mr Rod Smallwood (1968), Dr Abhishek Singhvi (1979) and Mr Baer Petitt (1982), and others. The ongoing generosity of Eashwar Krishnan (1996) and Tzo Tze Ang (1997) also enabled a new PhD student to come to Trinity. In addition, over
£656,000 was donated to the Annual Fund and we received over £900,000 from legacies. We are grateful for the continued support of many of you towards undergraduate bursaries, and to those of you who donated £176,313 in support of the College’s widening participation and access work, which is crucial to raising aspirations of bright potential students from schools without a history of sending students to Cambridge. Gifts from alumni have allowed us not only to augment our core work, but also to pursue new ventures. A generous donation from Mr Tom Hall (1986) will fund the first two Trinity Senior Fellow Commoners in the Creative Arts – the writer Ali Smith joins us in early 2019 as the first incumbent, as you will read on page 10. Other gifts have allowed the creation of new Postdoctoral Researcher positions, further digitisation work in the Wren Library, the establishment of an endowed fund to support Humanities and Arts at the College, and of the Donoghue and Stevenson Law Fund. The Annual Fund, as well as supporting the College’s widening participation and access initiatives, funded internship opportunities for undergraduates, and mental health awareness training for a number of key staff. Membership of Trinity is life long, and many of you keep in touch with each other and with the College without any particular help or encouragement from us. We do, however, attach huge importance to our role in fostering and renewing these relationships and links. By keeping in touch with our community of 15,000 alumni around the world, we hope to maintain and advance the affinity that we hope you feel towards the College and each other. In the course of the year we saw more of you than ever at our events in the UK and around the world. Two Annual Gatherings (for the years 1981–1983 and for 1952 and earlier) were as popular as Gatherings always are, and the regular September TrinTalk, last year on Medicine and Technology, was fully booked. Research Talk on Artificial Intelligence at the Google HQ in London sold out in just 12 hours, and drinks with the Master in Hong Kong, kindly hosted by Mr John Slosar (1978), gathered 49 alumni from the region. Our Alumni Associations, relying on the energetic and generous support of volunteers, delivered a host of other events through the year, from high profile speakers from the City, to more informal get-togethers over drinks. It has been a good year, but we can always do better – so please do be in touch with me or with Amy Trotter, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Development, if you want to share thoughts, suggestions or even criticisms.

Senior Bursar’s Report
Senior Bursar’s Report: Investing in the Future The financial position of the College remains very stable year on year. The investment objective of the College’s endowment is to maximise its long-term real income growth. The maintenance of the College’s fabric and infrastructure is a constant draw on the College’s resource, but often with significant variations from year to year. Maintenance, repairs and improvements totalled an unusually low £3.8m, down from £5m in 2017. In addition to funding its own activities and making its University Contribution of £2.4m to the Colleges’ Fund, the College has also been able to increase its spending on student scholarships and awards to £5.8m (2017 £5.1m) and make substantial grants totalling £6m (2017 £4.3m) to support wider collegiate Cambridge. This is a commitment it wishes to see continue in the future, as the College benefits from a strong collegiate environment. The grants to
Colleges included £1.5m to Darwin College, to create a new Bradfield Court. The investment objective of the College’s endowment is to maximise its long-term real income growth. This is intended to be achieved through investing mainly in property and equities. The annual performance when measured in terms of valuation has a weak correlation with this long-term objective, since in the short-term asset prices are buffeted by external factors. The College’s net investment income (after deducting Estate Management and investment costs and interest) was flat at £36.2m. The current valuation of the College’s net assets rose 8.8%. © IAN OLSSON

The Bradfield Centre opened in July 2017.
The College’s investments are not immune from the wider economy. The impact of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union is as yet unquantifiable, but the uncertainty alone will undoubtedly be negative. In October 2017, the College agreed a significant investment by TUS Holdings, the Science Park investment arm of Tsinghua University, to contribute to the renewal of phase 1 of the Cambridge Science Park, including construction of a new biohub. During the year the Bradfield Centre opened on the Science Park. Whilst not yet generating a financial return, it is already contributing significantly to entrepreneurial activity, and will hopefully help attract a new generation of future occupiers of the Park. The Bradfield Centre has also provided further opportunities for us to engage with our members, through events and support of entrepreneurial activities there, and I was delighted to welcome many of you at our open evening in May 2018. In other areas, we are increasingly indebted to our alumni for your generosity in supporting various College priorities. The increased support you have given in the previous year through your donations is providing additional funding for students at the College, helping to attract talented researchers to Cambridge, and allowing the College to pursue new initiatives it would not otherwise undertake. We are deeply grateful for all of your support. Every gift you give of any size makes a difference to what the College can do, and helps to strengthen Trinity for the benefit of all of its members – past, present and future. In summer 2018, Trinity announced the establishment of the first two Senior Fellow Commoners in the Creative Arts. The writer Ali Smith will be the first to take up the position, joining the College in January 2019. The Fellowship is designed to support the Fellows’ creative work, and to encourage their participation in College life, and has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Tom Hall (1986).
And it is a great testimony to the College that they should attract a novelist of the calibre of Ali Smith.
“Four teachers at Trinity in the late 1980s – Adrian Poole, Eric Griffiths, Jeremy Maule and John Marenbon – were a tremendously important part of my time there. Their patient, generous and imaginative instruction made a lasting difference to me, for which I am immeasurably grateful.
One of the most important things that Trinity did was to equip me with some very effective tools for continuing to learn in life after university. For almost any graduate what will really make a difference is what they learn after university. So giving people a desire to keep on reading and thinking – or at least not extinguishing that desire – seems to me a pretty important activity of a good teacher.”
To help fund the Senior Fellow Commoner in the Creative Arts is a very small expression of that gratitude (small because I received a lot more than I could ever give back). So it is a pleasure to translate my thanks into this gift to Trinity, and to Trinity English.

As an undergraduate my teachers were very different from one another but their shared values defined (at least to me) ‘Trinity English’: scrupulous attention to detail; the importance of high standards and rigorous argument; intolerance of lazy thinking or expression; humour. Those values have served many Trinity English graduates exceptionally well in many walks of life.
The Fellowship will complement the Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts, which celebrated its 50th year in 2017.

Supporting Graduate Students: Dunlevie King’s Hall Studentships Trinity’s academic reputation depends on its ability to recruit and nurture the very best students from around the world, and to provide them with the funding they need to pursue their academic careers in Cambridge. In 2017, 700 years after the founding of King’s Hall, later to become part of Trinity, Elizabeth and Bruce Dunlevie (1977) made a generous gift to the College to support students in their MPhil studies. Funding for graduate study is often limited, and so Trinity is deeply grateful to Elizabeth and Bruce and all those who support graduate studentships and thereby help talented students to fulfil their academic potential. The first seven Dunlevie King’s Hall students joined the College in 2018. Elizabeth and Bruce commented, “We are pleased to be able to support Trinity graduate studentships, which the College has identified as an area of need. We encourage anyone who is in the position to do so to provide support for the next generation of graduate students.”

“The Studentship allows me to focus purely on my academic work, rather than having to worry about the financial burden that would ordinarily go along with a Master’s course. I recognise that, especially as a graduate student in the often underfunded humanities, this is a truly privileged position to be in, and one I am very grateful to have been afforded.” Cornelius Dieckmann “Without the Studentship I would not have been able to study at Cambridge University. Sometimes when I sit in Trinity College Hall, feeling insignificant surrounded by such grand architecture, I pinch myself to make sure that I am not dreaming. To be able to meet people from all over the world and be given the space and opportunity to think deeply about how to solve global problems is a rare privilege. I am grateful for it.” Iyeyinka Omigbodun

Andy Rubin (1984).
Andy Rubin Bursary and internship opportunities Gifts received towards student support allow the College to encourage the brightest and best young people, regardless of background or financial situation, to come to Trinity. Andy Rubin (1984) has generously supported an undergraduate bursary, and he has also offered invaluable internships at his company, Pentland Brands plc. “In recent years I have reconnected with the College, and I am pleased to be supporting bursaries for Trinity undergraduates and thereby helping the College to provide much needed funding to students. In the summer, I also welcomed two Trinity students as interns at Pentland for the first time, which was of great benefit to them and to the

company. I would encourage anyone else who is in the position to provide support through either of these means to do so, and thereby help the next generation of students make the most of their time at College.”
Widening participation In 2017–18 over £175,000 was given to Trinity’s Widening Participation initiatives, enabling the College to expand its busy outreach programme designed to encourage students from less advantaged or under-represented backgrounds to aspire to get to a good university. Our two Schools Liaison Officers (SLOs) organised a series of residential courses at the College, including a new one for Year 11 pupils; delivered the Black and Ethnic Minority Conference; made dozens of visits to schools; participated
in University fairs, and welcomed many schools to Trinity. Specific projects include collaboration with Villiers Park on their Scholars’ Programme in Swindon, with the Seren network for state secondary schools in Wales, and with the University’s Millennium Mathematics Project for the support of maths teaching in the Peterborough area and in Felixstowe. Thanks to the generosity of alumni we have been able to sustain the work of our SLOs and the development of connexions with a wider range of schools and potential applicants. We are tremendously thankful for this support, which helps us to extend our reach and to ensure that the College is as diverse and welcoming a place as possible.
“During my internship at Pentland, I worked on a project called Darwin – an app that seeks to provide swimmers with Speedo goggle recommendations based on the size and shape of their faces. I solved logistical challenges, took responsibility for areas of publicity and even learned to code. It has given me a much stronger sense of how a large company can and should work, greater confidence in taking on unfamiliar tasks, and a renewed excitement in the possible uses of technology.” Jonathan Nicolaides (2016)

Telethon We were delighted that our student callers (pictured above) could speak to over 880 of you in April 2018 during our annual Telethon, and we are tremendously grateful for your gifts and pledges of over £280,000 to support the College. Because of your generosity, Trinity is able to provide more funding for students, for research, and for the College’s Access Scheme, as well as for the Choir and the First and Third Trinity Boat Club. The Telethon is a perfect opportunity for students to update alumni on Trinity today, and to learn how the College has influenced and shaped the lives of its alumni since they graduated.
“Just a note to say how much I appreciate your follow-up letter, and also the hand-written card from Jess. I do congratulate her on her engaging delivery, and wish her well in her history finals and hope for her success in her career direction with the Civil Service.” Allan Mornement (1962)

The 1546 Society We now have 1009 members of the 1546 Society (949 in 2016–2017), which recognises regular gifts of £15.46 per month or above (or £5.15 per month or above for those who graduated within the last decade). Regular gifts at this level are critical as they collectively make an impact on the lives of Trinity students and provide a continual source of support to the College.
The Clock Tower Circle
The Great Court Circle
Established to thank alumni and friends who give upwards of £1,000 per year to Trinity, there are now 303 Clock Tower Circle members (256 in 2016–2017).
Lifetime membership is offered to alumni who inform the Alumni Relations and Development Office of their intention to leave a legacy to the College in their will.
Clock Tower Circle gifts provide a dedicated source of funding for Trinity’s core priorities of teaching, research, and student support.
There are now 298 Great Court Circle members. Members are welcomed back to the College annually for a special luncheon, followed by an exclusive activity such as a music recital, lecture or tour of College and refreshments in the Master’s Lodge.
King’s Hall Circle
Fellow Benefactors
Launched just last year in honour of the 700th anniversary of King’s Hall (founded by Edward II in 1317), the King’s Hall Circle recognises some of the College’s most generous donors.
The College was delighted to admit two new Fellow Benefactors, Tzo Tze Ang (1997) and Viswanathan Krishnan (1996), in March 2018, at the Commemoration of Benefactors Feast, in recognition of their pioneering support for early-career researchers and graduate students.
The 22 members have given support for a variety of projects at Trinity – some innovative and some core to the College’s mission.
They join our existing Fellow Benefactors Lord Wolfson of Sunningdale (1954), Mr Graham KenistonCooper (1977) and Mr Bruce Dunlevie (1977).

The Class of 2017 were welcomed back to Trinity for the New Alumni Dinner.
Alumni enjoyed a tour of the new building, which is designed to foster contacts and encourage cross-collaboration.
Wayve Co-Founders Dr Alex Kendall (2014) and Dr Amar Shah (St John’s 2006) are pioneering end-to-end machine learning algorithms to make safe, self-driving vehicles a day-to-day reality.
New Alumni Dinner A new initiative for 2017–18 was to offer our most recent alumni an opportunity to return to College for a formal dinner ahead of their first Annual Gathering, which is not due for some years after Graduation. On 20 April 2018, 60 graduates from the Class of 2017 joined Fellows for dinner in the Old Kitchen. Professor Catherine Barnard (e1996) and Dr Hugh Hunt (e1990) were the after dinner speakers. The plan is for this to be a regular biennial event to ensure that younger alumni remain connected to the College and to each other.
Bradfield Centre: Behind the Scenes The opening of the Bradfield Centre was the perfect opportunity for alumni to hear from the Senior Bursar and the Master about this exciting new venture named in honour of former Senior Bursar, Sir John Bradfield (1942). Alumni and current student entrepreneurs described what the Bradfield Centre means to them, and guests were given a tour of the building, which is now at the heart of the Cambridge Science Park.
Fellows’ Research Talks (Google) Alumni always appreciate the opportunity to hear about aspects of the latest research undertaken by Trinity Fellows. Dr Sean Holden (e2002) and Dr Alex Kendall (2014) gave two engaging presentations on different aspects of AI: ‘Will Artificial Intelligence save the world?’ Thanks to the generosity of alumnus Hoi Lam (1997) the event was hosted at Google HQ in London. The Research Talk was filmed and is available to view on YouTube.
“I wanted to thank you for the most wonderful Annual Gathering on Saturday at Trinity. It really was a very enjoyable and memorable time, and so lovely to be back at a place that holds such a dear place in my heart. I didn’t manage to make the last reunion so it really had been a long time since I was back! It was so great to be able to catch up and reconnect with so many friends and fellow undergraduates from that special time in our lives.” Josephine Fothergill [nee Rowe] (1978)
