The Chair’s Report It will not come as any great surprise to you to hear that 2019–20 has been a challenging year for Trinity. Yet, despite the COVID-19 curveball that 2020 has thrown at us all, it has been positive in many ways, and you have continued to support the College throughout the year. Thanks to your generosity, we received a total amount of £2.14m in new gifts, pledges and legacies.

Peter Drummond-Hay (1967), Alex Montagu (1987) and Matthew Sargeant (2004), we have been able to establish Trinity in New York this year, and other new groups are in the pipeline – do keep an eye on the website and our publications for the latest developments.

Your support opens up many new opportunities and initiatives for our students, researchers and Fellows. We want to ensure that all our students, no matter their background, can concentrate on their studies free from the burden of financial worries, and increasing our bursary provision remains a top priority for the College. We are tremendously grateful for your continued support for top-up and full undergraduate bursaries. Graduate studentships enable us to continue to attract and nurture the best research talent from around the world and, thanks to the generosity of supporters including Robert Crawford (1992) and the many alumni and friends who have given to the Leon Brittan Fund for European Studies, we have been able to establish important new studentships. We are also indebted to the twelve people including Dr Christopher Bruton (1963) who chose to remember Trinity in their wills. Their legacies will sustain and enrich the life of the College long into the future.

Our events have continued to attract good audiences, with September’s Trinity Writers and TrinTalk opening this year’s programme in great style (see page 11). Our thanks to our alumni panel members for making such memorable occasions. A private view of Sir Antony Gormley’s retrospective at the Royal Academy in November was a sellout and highlight – the presence and contribution of Sir Antony made the evening. From January 2020 onwards our alumni events planned for the UK and overseas were curtailed due to the pandemic, but we determined to carry on and take the opportunity to offer online events and, via Zoom, we can now reach alumni all over the world. The Trinity Research Talks series enables us to bring the latest research news from our Fellows to your door, and we will continue to develop our online events and activities, although we are hopeful that 2021 will see us hosting actual events once more.

Sadly it was necessary to postpone the Telethon planned for March 2020 at the very last moment, just as our student callers were poised to pick up the phones to talk with you. Nevertheless you have given £610,765 to the Annual Fund, providing a regular stream of support enabling Trinity to address areas of urgent need. We rescheduled the Telethon for December 2020, which you can read about on page 13.

This year has illuminated just how remarkable, resilient and generous a community Trinity is, and never more so than in times of need. Thank you for your loyalty and your support. We hope that in the year ahead you will join our online events, and continue to share your news and achievements with us; we have greatly appreciated all of your letters, emails and phone calls over recent months. We are looking forward to the day when we are able to welcome our alumni back through Great Gate. Until then, stay safe and please keep in touch.

One of the most important and enjoyable elements of our work is fostering connections between alumni, keeping everybody in touch with the College and with one another. It has been especially pleasing to see our associations and groups enduring and increasing, due to the commitment of our energetic volunteer committee members. Thanks to Christos Koutsoyannis (1998), Omar Ahmed (2001),

Access and Widening Participation: Inspiring Bright Young Minds Widening participation is a fundamental part of the College’s access strategy, and a major focus of the Access and Outreach team’s important work is reaching out to pupils from social groups that have traditionally been under-represented at Trinity and the University of Cambridge, as well as to their schools, their teachers and parents.

Ali Smith with just a small selection of the fantastic submissions we received from all over the UK.

The College is very grateful to all of the donors whose gifts this year have enabled us to continue connecting with pupils and schools across the country, and to inspire talented youngsters to consider applying to Cambridge and other top universities. Thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor, Trinity was able to launch ‘The Litmus’ project, a creative writing initiative for UK-wide school students age 14-16 years, in collaboration with writer and Trinity Senior Fellow

Commoner in the Creative Arts, Ali Smith – a position the College was able to establish due to the generosity of Tom Hall (1986). Pupils were asked to contribute artwork or a piece of writing of up to 500 words under the general title ‘In Common’. “Write down what happens when you hear these words. Make something of them. Send us what you write or make, we’ll publish it in our online display, and you’ll become part of a writing collective like no other, a collective that reaches all across the UK and will act as a touchstone for readers interested in what your generation is doing and writing right now – because you’re the people about to inherit the planet, make it your own, and make your own story and history happen.” Ali Smith (e2018). We received a remarkable selection of submissions, and many reflected what has been a particularly turbulent year for young people. Contributors put pen to paper on subjects from Black Lives Matter, COVID-19 and the loneliness of lockdown, to hope and the human instinct to help one another in times of need. Projects such as these enable the College to connect with pupils at a formative stage in their school careers and to fire their passions and ambition, which is key to the work of the Access and Outreach Team. Visit the website: web.trin.cam.ac.uk/litmus

“One of the critical objectives of outreach work needs to be to stop the gradual loss of pupil ambition towards Higher Education that can begin very early. Initiatives such as ‘The Litmus’ are so valuable because they enable us to encourage pupil creativity and to build confidence, laying the foundation for a long-lasting relationship between them and Trinity early in their academic careers.” Lizzie Bowes, Trinity Schools’ Liaison Officer

The Leon Brittan Fund for European Studies: Supporting Research The Leon Brittan Fund for European Studies was established in 2019, in memory of Lord Brittan of Spennithorne (1939–2015), who read Law at Trinity (1957), and who served as Vice-President of the European Commission. The Fund supports education, learning and research in matters relating to research on Europe, including in the fields of Law, History, Economics, Politics or International Relations. The Leon Brittan Studentship supports a one year graduate undertaking research in European Studies, and the first recipient, Connor Stevens (2017 History), began his studentship in 2020. “My master’s thesis will explore how the symbiotic development of European integration and the peace process changed identities, cultures, and commerce in the broad region either side of the Irish border. I am incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by the Leon Brittan Fund donors that will enable me and future students to focus on scholarship, free from the constraints they would otherwise face because of a lack of government maintenance grants or loans,

and pressure to enter the world of work. The financial independence the studentship provides is, therefore, deeply and sincerely appreciated. I hope one day to be able to repay future students at Trinity with similar support.” Connor Stevens (2017) The College is very grateful to all of the alumni and friends who made a gift in support of the Fund in 2019–20 and who are providing opportunities for brilliant young students, such as Connor, to continue their studies at Trinity after graduation. “My husband, Leon, spent a lot of time helping younger people in their careers, including his cabinet in Brussels, and what he thought was important was lifelong intellectual curiosity and the tenacity to see things through, even when times were tough. His own motto was never give up! Apart from valuing intelligence, he also admired the softer skills and was himself a very kind and generous man. I think if the Brittan scholars achieve what they want to in life, partly through the opportunity of a great university education, and partly through buoyancy and determination, as he himself did, he would be very pleased indeed.” Dame Diana Brittan

The Trinity Cawthorn Studentships in Crop Sciences Boosting crop production in response to escalating human demand is one of the greatest challenges the world faces. Our capacity to help to solve such global challenges and to increase our understanding depends on our ability to attract, and nurture, the very best graduate students, whose research will help to protect the future of our people and our planet. The College is grateful to Robert Cawthorn (1956) for his generous gift to establish two Trinity Cawthorn Studentships in Crop Sciences, a joint initiative which will be of tremendous benefit to both Trinity and the University’s Crop Science Centre, where the PhD Studentships will be based. The first recipients will take up their research in 2021.

Legacies have played a vital role in Trinity’s history, and are today supporting worldleading academic research, student learning and welfare initiatives amongst other key priorities. Leaving a bequest is an opportunity to invest in the future generations of Trinity students and researchers who will go on to change the world for the better.

The First and Third Trinity Boat Club holds a very special place in the heart of many alumni. Thanks to the generosity of Amanda North (1978) and the Ladies’ First and Third Boat Club rowing team 1978–79, who have given to the Club to purchase a new women’s racing eight, future generations of students will be able to experience the joy of rowing.

Gifts of all sizes make a real difference to what the College is able to achieve. It is possible to leave to Trinity either a capital amount or a share of the residue of your estate. A legacy gift is also free of tax and may reduce the inheritance tax liabilities on your estate. While unrestricted gifts are particularly helpful because they

River Cam served not only as an athletic but also a social centre of the University. Trinity’s First and Third Boat Club was legendary. I inquired about joining the Ladies’ crew, only to find that it didn’t exist. Rallying an enthusiastic, stalwart – and completely inexperienced – group of young ladies, we ventured to the Trinity Boathouse. The men loaned us a decrepit boat, which we promptly sank. We tried again, and again. Finally, most likely to spare Trinity from further embarrassment, the men agreed to coach us. Although we caught our fair share of crabs – and bumps – along the way, we persevered through the frigid early mornings, and the Trinity First and Third Ladies’ Boat was launched! The bonds we formed that year endured, bringing eight of us together at our September 2018 Annual Gathering (see page 6). We raised a few pints and grasped our oars, savouring again the comradery and pride we shared forty years ago.

It is our pleasure, as the inaugural Ladies’ First and Third team*, to purchase for the

Club a new racing eight from Janousek. After consulting with the Boat Club, we arrived at this model because we are told it is strong and resilient, like the women of Trinity! We hope it will enable many others to try their hand at rowing and enjoy the lifelong friendships that are sure to ensue.” *Claire Allen, Jane Corbett, Joan Lasenby, Pippa Latham-French, Janet Lefroy Jacqueline Lindgren, Amanda North, Harriet Scorer, Margaret Spillane (all 1978).

Gifts That Keep on Giving Regular gifts of any size make a tremendous difference to Trinity, providing a reliable source of support to draw upon. The College is grateful to the many donors who have made recurring gifts this year. It has been particularly heartening to see a growing number of young alumni joining their ranks, even though they graduated not so long ago. The 1546 Society was established to thank alumni who give regularly, and those who graduated within the last decade and give

“I am proud to give back to Trinity and support its access and widening participation work. During my time as a student, the College helped me immensely – I got involved in opportunities that I would not have been able to afford, made connections with people I wouldn’t have otherwise met, and learned new skills for my personal development. These were the most formative years of my life, and I am delighted to be able to support the brightest young students in what will be one of the most important stages of their lives too.” Mary Wang (2009) To learn more about Mary’s Trinity days and her path since leaving the College, you can read her Alumni Interview, and the stories of other alumni too, on our website: www.trin.cam.ac.uk/alumni/ trinity-alumni-interviews

Senior Bursar’s Report

Senior Bursar’s Report In addition to funding its own activities and making its University Contribution of £2.67m to the University’s Colleges’ Fund, this year Trinity made substantial grants totalling £4.6m (2019: £4.3m) to support wider collegiate Cambridge. Despite the global economic upheaval created by the pandemic towards the end of the financial year, the College has maintained its spending level on scholarships and awards at £6.1m (2019: £6.5m). If you were to look at the Endowment portfolio valuation at the end of June 2020 you could be forgiven for thinking that all was well. The valuation is more or less where it was a year ago. Indeed, even after taking into account the income draw, capital returns were actually positive. But Trinity does not consume its capital. Therein would lie the road to long-term ruin. It relies on the income generated by that capital, and that income is now under strain, with both rental income and dividends falling in 2020, and a significantly worse outcome anticipated for 2021. We seek to maximise the long term real income growth of Trinity’s endowment through investing mainly in property and equities. However, the endowment’s annual performance is not a clear indicator of its long term success because in the short term, asset prices are subject to external factors. In 2020 these were compounded by a fall in bond yields. The College’s net investment income decreased by 8% to £35.5m, but the current valuation of our net assets rose 0.5% © JO COONEY

£

from £1,533m to £1,540m. The key indicator of Trinity’s financial health, however, is the net income in our unrestricted General Funds, which were £5.3m in deficit in 2020 (2019: £2.24m in surplus). By summer 2020 the impact of the pandemic on the College’s income started to be felt. Trinity was closed to most students for the Summer Term, resulting in internal rental income falling by £1.2m, or over 25% compared to 2019. COVID-19’s impact on rents and dividends is significant and as yet unquantifiable for the long term. Shortening leases, business rates on empty buildings and fewer upward only rent reviews mean that rental income is becoming more volatile, and the economic impact of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union still remains unknown. Maintaining the College’s estate is a constant expense, but one that often varies significantly from year to year. The outlay on maintenance, repairs and improvements remains relatively low at £5.2m while we plan for new rounds of major expenditure. In years of low spend we make transfers to the College Reconstruction Fund, which now has a balance of £13.3m (2019: £8.7m). Unfortunately the costs of renewing Grade 1 listed buildings have grown rapidly so this fund can quickly be exhausted. Despite the construction restrictions during the spring lockdown, work also continued on the College’s new building at Round Church Street that will provide accommodation for 39 postgraduate students and six residential sets. It is exciting to watch a new Trinity building taking shape (pictured on page 9) and we are looking forward to its completion in 2021. The unfortunate loss of a Trinity Street tenant provided us

with an opportunity to create extra study and social space for the College community, and the Estates team has been managing the refurbishment of the former Strada restaurant, transforming it into a versatile setting for many different activities. Facilities include open study areas with moveable desks and seating, a meeting room and small meeting booths, and a bar and café area. The students have named the space Newton’s Cradle, and we hope we can welcome alumni to an event at the Cradle in the not too distant future. I am stepping down in January after fourteen years as Senior Bursar. Would that I were handing over at a more propitious time. It is deeply concerning for the prospect of future returns that capital is almost free, and consequently the returns to income-seeking investment are likely to be low for some time to come. That said, we already hold many good investments and the question for those is the extent to which their income and growth prospects are truly impaired for the long term.

On the brighter side, with crisis comes opportunity, never more so than in financial markets. For Trinity, one opportunity may be to take advantage of the mould-breaking that has occurred with some fresh thinking. That opportunity for fresh thinking of course coincides with the arrival of our new Senior Bursar, Richard Turnill, former Global Chief Investment Strategist of BlackRock. Richard has navigated other periods of financial volatility, which will stand him and Trinity in good stead. As has been noted this year, Trinity has weathered many a storm. In these unprecedented times, we are especially grateful for the support of the alumni and friends who remain by our side. Their continued generosity has helped us to both respond to the unexpected, and to meet our commitment to provide the best possible environment in which our remarkable students and academics can thrive. So much has changed this year but, despite the pandemic, our alumni community has determined to keep on keeping on, joining us for our online events and continuing to support the Trinity community. Trinity Alumni Interviews

Left to right: Nick Wong (2010), Emily Murray (1996), Alex Michaelides (1996) and Mary Wang (2009).

You have made a difference to the College in so many ways, whether that be mentoring students; helping the Access and Outreach team to host virtual open days and activities; supporting the ARDO team in delivering our alumni events; keeping our alumni associations and groups going and growing; or featuring in our publications and communications.

You have also supported the Trinity Alumni Interviews, offering your experience to help current and aspiring students through a web series of wonderful memories, tips and advice. We hope many more of you will want to share your stories. We have reproduced excerpts from two of the interviews to inspire you so do have a read and get in touch at alumni-events@trin.cam.ac.uk

Helen Beedham (1991, Modern & Medieval Languages) Helen came to Trinity to study French and Spanish, spending her year abroad in Madrid. After graduating, she began working in the City, and is now a selfemployed writer, speaker, and advisor with a focus on inclusivity within workplaces.

Why did you want to study at Trinity? I had a bit of an unusual route to Trinity – I was initially unsuccessful in applying to Cambridge. I applied to Magdalene to study French and Spanish, and I confess I probably hadn’t done sufficient research into the different Colleges, but for whatever reason I wasn’t successful on that occasion. That prompted me to do a lot more research, to go and speak to some of the Admissions Tutors and speak to other students, and I spoke with some students at Trinity and realised that it would be a better fit. Do you have any role models, or who inspired you? What has really inspired me through being part of the Trinity Women’s Network Committee was just meeting and hearing from other women who studied at Trinity at different times. I found it so

inspiring to hear how they’ve used their degrees, how they’ve progressed their work lives, and have also unexpectedly found things in common – mutual topics of interest. What do you do now? I now work for myself as an independent writer, speaker, and advisor to corporate firms on creating inclusive workplaces and enabling individuals to flourish in their professional careers. And that really builds on the last 25 years of my career – experience from Harrods in the early days, and then 15 years as a management consultant specialising in organisational change. And more recently as director of an awardwinning diversity organisation – City Parents – growing a large professional network across the city. What advice would you give to current students? Just make the most of your time because it flies by, and I certainly found I missed it once it had ended! Talk, listen and connect with as many people, and as wide a variety, as you can because now really is your chance to start building your own professional network. There’s such a rich variety of relationships that will serve you in wonderful stead, and that you can continue to access through alumni activities and networks once you leave Trinity.

Mike Waldron (2006, Music) Mike came to Trinity in 2006 to read Music and stayed on to read a BMus in 2009. He was also Organ Scholar during those four years, and the first under Director of Music, Stephen Layton (e2006). He is now a conductor and musician based in London.

I’m freelance but I have groups I work with as their permanent music director. There’s a lot of guest work as well, lots of one-off projects. It’s a rich tapestry of work where every day is different, every group is different, and every concert is different, and I love that.

Why did you want to study Music at Trinity? It was a bit of an accident to be perfectly honest. At school, I was convinced that I wanted to become a lawyer. Then my organ teacher suggested I should think about applying for an organ scholarship, which I hadn’t considered, but I started to look into it. I thought Trinity looked amazing – when I saw what the Choir did I decided I wanted to apply, even if it seemed a bit out of reach!

What’s the one thing you wish you’d known before you arrived at Trinity? You’ll never be able to do everything brilliantly. You’ll never be able to research that particular essay in as much depth as you like, or be able to do all the wider reading that was mentioned in the lecture. You are battling against not enough time to do everything. It’s just about managing, doing the best with what you can and with the time and resources available, and still ultimately getting lots out of the system.

What do you do now? I’m a conductor and musician. I’m following a path which is a combination of design, accident, and luck – and it’s probably totally different to anybody doing a similar thing! I left Cambridge with good keyboard skills because I played the organ and the piano so much, and I had also started doing a lot of conducting – about 90% playing and 10% conducting when I first left, and now I do 80-90% conducting, and 10-20% playing.

What advice would you give to current students? Say yes to everything. You’ll make life exhausting and a bit stressful at times, but Cambridge is unbelievable for having so much on offer, and Trinity specifically – you could pack every minute doing something amazing. If you think you might be interested in it, even if you then ditch it, just do it. Embrace it, go with it, and just have a blast because it’s an amazing place.

Trinity Writers ‘Trinity Writers’ on 28 September 2019 celebrated just some of the College’s literary talent. Writer and television producer Daisy Goodwin (1980), novelist Alex Michaelides (1996), travel writer Hugh Thomson (1979), and food writer and historian Dr Bee Wilson (1992) joined Professor Adrian Poole (1967) in a day of open and honest conversation, ranging from how it feels to sit down in front of a blank page, to maintaining momentum after early success. Annual Fund Despite this year’s many challenges, including the postponement due to COVID-19 of our annual telephone fundraising campaign planned for March 2020, £610,765 was donated to the Annual Fund in 2019-20. The Fund plays a vital role in helping the College to maintain academic excellence, ensuring that talented students can study here, whatever their financial circumstances, and that we are able to offer the best resources and facilities to support the very highest level of research.

Trinity is committed to ensuring that all students have as rewarding an experience as possible during their time at Cambridge, free from financial worries. Because of your generosity, the College has been able to provide extra support when it is most needed, allowing students to embrace every opportunity. Your gifts have helped Trinity to provide funds for the First and Third Boat Club, the Choir, our Access initiatives and activities, top-up bursaries, the Fellows’ Research Fund, and General Purposes to support other needed projects.

“As the first generation in my family to go to university, I could have never had a full Cambridge experience without the many financial support options from Trinity. Telethon Fortunately, the College was able to reschedule a COVID-secure Telethon from 7 – 20 December 2020, thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of our student calling team. Our annual Telethon is particularly important because it not only raises funds for Trinity but it is also offers our students a chance to talk with alumni, to compare experiences of College and Cambridge life, and to share stories and achievements. Opportunities to benefit from alumni expertise and careers advice are always greatly appreciated, and are particularly valuable for our current cohort because the global economic outlook remains so uncertain.

We are tremendously grateful for your gifts and pledges of £278,000 to support the College, and we are very proud of our team of 11 student callers who did such a fine job. Moving the Telethon from Easter to Michaelmas Term also provided us with a new opportunity to connect alumni and students during the festive season, and it was wonderful to bring the Trinity community together at such a special time of year. Thank you to each and every one of you who spoke with our student callers, and we will report back on the campaign results in detail in the Annual Report 2020–21.

“I had many incredibly rewarding conversations with alumni over the two weeks of the Telethon. I think some of our exchanges will stay with me for a very long time, which more than made up for the inconvenience of talking on the phone in a mask!” Ishbel Russell (2018)

The Great Court Circle

The Clock Tower Circle recognises the alumni and friends who give upwards of £1,000 each year to the College. There are currently 314 members, whose gifts provide funding to help Trinity deliver the very best in teaching, research, and support for its student community.

The Great Court Circle was founded to celebrate those who choose to remember Trinity in their will and inform the Alumni Relations and Development Office of their intention to do so.

In honour of the 700th Anniversary of the founding of the Hall by Edward II in 1317, the King’s Hall Circle was launched in 2017 to celebrate some of Trinity’s most generous supporters.

Trinity currently has nine Fellow Benefactors, who are recognised for their outstanding support of the College and its mission to contribute to society through the pursuit of worldleading education, learning and research.

Each of the Circle’s 30 members have given their support to an array of College initiatives, from the innovative and individual to key Trinity priorities including advancing global understanding through groundbreaking research. Only those who have given this year are included in the List of Donors.

The College is indebted to Dr Tom Howat (1999), Sir Henry Keswick (1958), Mr Simon Keswick (1961), Lord Wolfson of Sunningdale (1954), Mr Graham KenistonCooper (1977), Mr Bruce Dunlevie (1977) and Mrs Elizabeth Dunlevie, Tzo Tze Ang (1997) and Viswanathan Krishnan (1996). © IAN OLSSON

In appreciation of their generosity, members of the Circle receive an invitation to a special reception each year, usually held in June. Lifetime membership of the Circle is awarded to those donors who have given more than £25,000.

There are now 337 lifetime members of the Circle (310 in 2018–19), and each year they are invited to return to the College for a special lunch, and an afternoon of activities such as a talk, tour or music recital.
