WELCOME
A very Happy New Year and a very warm welcome to our Spring season 2019. We’re back, refreshed and ready for a new year of performances showcasing all our Trinity Laban talent. We’re delighted to present our Gold Medal Award 2019 in a new home at the Southbank Centre. This annual event is the ideal opportunity to get a flavour of our musical talent across the conservatoire, as seven outstanding young artists display high level of creativity and musicianship as they compete for our most prestigious prize. Join us at the Purcell Room, where you will be guaranteed a great night out. Laban Theatre presents an exciting season of UK and international dance as we welcome Scottish Dance Theatre and Polish Dance Theatre to the stage, as well as the chance to see a screening of Impermanence’s film The Ballet of the Nations. Our students perform in newly commissioned choreography and an evening of youth dance for the U.Dance 2019 London Platform, which is always a high point of the Spring dance season. Our Venus Blazing year continues apace, and in February, the violin concerto by Deirdre Gribbin which gives the whole year its name is performed at our newly refurbished Blackheath Halls. Our Jazz students perform a Venus Blazing bill at Blackheath Halls, and take centre stage for our annual event at Ronnie Scott’s. Be sure to join us at the National Maritime Museum for the world premiere performances of Melting, Shifting Liquid World, a new immersive, site specific piece written by composer Hollie Harding. Spring at Trinity Laban also means one thing – CoLab – our fortnight-long festival of creativity, where boundaries blur and work in progress takes the audience on a creative journey. You’ll find a whole host of opportunities to encounter the festival at Blackheath Halls, King Charles Court and the Laban Building, as well as at Tate Modern, where we take up residency at the Tate Exchange on Level Five. Come and join us – I look forward to seeing you! Professor Anthony Bowne Principal, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance

THE OLD ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE TRINITY LABAN CHAPEL CHOIR
Since 2001, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance has provided music in the Chapel at the Old Royal Naval College. We are the only Conservatoire in the UK to support a Collegiate Chapel Choir, which is one of the most outstanding sacred music ensembles in London. Most members of the choir are drawn from Trinity Laban, but there are also places for experienced and outstanding local volunteer singers. The choir is supported by an assistant organist and Director of Chapel Music. The choir sings a varied repertoire, spanning over 500 years of music, from Renaissance polyphony to the present day. See ornc.org/events for the latest performances and recitals. Most performances take place in the Old Royal Naval College and are directed by Ralph Allwood MBE. The Observer on Impermanence Dance Theatre
This 50-minute film, narrated by Billy Zane, was inspired by the 1915 pacifist satire The Ballet of the Nations, written by Vernon Lee and illustrated by Maxwell Armfield as a response to the First World War. Impermanence’s film incorporates original dialogue and a narrative of intricate stylised dance pieces, imagining war as a diabolical dance choreographed by Satan and Death. The dance descends into a massacre, locking the nations of the world into an endless cycle of slaughter and mutilation. Bristol-based Impermanence co‑founders Roseanna Anderson and Joshua Ben‑Tovim make their directorial debut with production design by Pam Tait, cinematography by Jack Offord and an original score by Robert Bentall. The film will be followed by a Q&A with the company and collaborators. LABAN THEATRE £8 (£6)

SONYA CULLINGFORD TRANSITIONS DANCE COMPANY 2008 DANCER AND ACTOR
Trinity Laban offered me a springboard to the professional music world that I am now in. I was also privileged to receive scholarships from the college and importantly, I had the opportunity to work with great masters and meet people who changed my life
Trinity Laban gave me the opportunity to experiment with creative process, technique and performance style. It gave me the confidence to put myself out there again and again, including finding my literal voice and starting to use text. I feel very grateful to Trinity Laban for the start it gave me.
Lana is the soloist in Venus Blazing by Deirdre Gribbin at Blackheath Hall on Wednesday 8 February (see page 5 for more details).
Sonya performed in The Ballet of the Nations, a film which will be shown in the Laban Theatre on Friday 25 January (see page 14 for more details).
