A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of being with our confirmation students at Stony Lake Lutheran Camp. It always is a highlight of my summer. On Thursday afternoon I went with 10 of those students to cheer them on as they attempted the high ropes initiative. Climbing to heights of 15 to 30 feet they traversed a tightrope stretched between trees coming down on a zip line through the forest clearing. For many of our students this was a first time experience. It took encouragement from us on the ground as they were suspended high above us. What awaited them at the end was being able to fly in the sky like a bird in flight as they came down on a zip line. With each student, you could see that there was anxiousness over trying something new, perspiration with the challenge and even a few tears during the initiative, quickly though, anxiousness turned into smiles. Once on the ground there was excitement to try it again. In the spirit of it all there was a sense

of accomplishment, WOW! I can’t believe I did that! One of the things I love about these experiences and about summer is the opportunity it affords us to diverge from regular routines, to break away from the same old way of doing things and do try something new. Maybe it is taking a vacation to somewhere you have never been. Maybe it is going on a long wilderness hike for the first time. Maybe it is taking advantage of the beautiful summer to be outside instead sitting at the computer. What I love is that once you have tried something new, often you come away from the experience wanting to try it again. There might be some truth in that old adage “Try it you’ll like it.” This summer I would challenge each of us to try something new when it comes to our walk of faith. To seek out those opportunities to be in fellowship with someone you may not know. To volunteer at the hospital, at the open door, or at our Trinity rummage sale, to take a day to be of service to someone else. It is amazing what God can accomplish through us if we but give of our time and energy. This summer we have so many opportunities to step out and do something new. We will be hosting youth from the inner-city of Saginaw at “Day at the Lake” on Wixom Lake. For many of these children this will be the only vacation they will get this summer. And so we have the opportunity to share the love of Christ with them. We as a

3

congregation along with other Midland congregations and Dow Chemical will be participating in the Habitat for Humanity Midland County Neighborhood Revitalization project starting Aug 1st – Aug 5th. This will be an opportunity for us to show what the people of God can do for the kingdom of God. Maybe you have always wanted to sing in one of our choirs or try playing the Handbells. Now is the time to give it a try without worrying about busy schedules and having to make a weekly commitment. Participating in new experiences such as these encourage us in our walk of faith, because first off we join with others in the name of Christ and in doing so the Holy Spirit is unleashed in powerful ways through Christian fellowship. Secondly, our fears are broken down when we step out in faith and try something new. God has this way of breaking down walls and encouraging us in following His lead. On our website: tlcmidland.org and in our weekly bulletin announcements there are many opportunities to step out in faith and do something new. As each of us see ourselves as richly blessed, let us be a blessing to others in the name of Christ. Try it you might just like it,

food for thought…. ….a note from your Associate Pastor

21

and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10: 21-25

Ahhhh, summer! The season that many of us in the Great Lakes State yearn for, nine months out of the year. The season that brings travel, vacations, family reunions and trips “up north.” Summer is a time to renew and refresh and spend some time by the waters of this beautiful state. It is a great time of year and many folks in our congregation take advantage of this time to seek out places of respite and retreat. Vacation can also be a great time to slow down our lives enough that we have a chance to listen to that still small voice that reaches into our hearts and prods and pushes and leads and guides. God speaks to us even when we are on vacation! Maybe even more so. This verse from scripture reminds us that even though we may have taken a break from our jobs and schools, we are called to

continue in our habit of meeting together to praise God. Just because we are not near our own faith community, does not mean that we take a vacation from worship. When we attend worship even though we are “up north”, we invite Jesus to be a part of our whole lives, not just something we do on Saturdays or Sundays when we are home; not just something that happens during the school year. Likewise, having visitors with us when we are home and inviting them to worship with us is a great way to witness our faith as we welcome folks into God’s house. There is another benefit to visiting churches when we are away; Besides the communion we share with so many Christians in our world, we can learn from other’s practices, exchange ideas, support each other in our spiritual struggles and reflect on our own practices back home. Are we as welcoming as Church A? Does Church B have some ministries going on that we could adopt or create? Do the practices of this faith community reflect the Good News of Jesus Christ as you understand it? Experience is always the best teacher so when we attend our up north church we grow in our faith and understanding and we can glean ideas on how we can be a stronger faith community back home. To this end, I invite you to visit elsewhere while you are away and to bring the bulletin back with you. Maybe jot a note on it about what you liked about the worship or did not like. Then take that bulletin and put it in my office mailbox with your name on it. I would

love to meet with you and hear more about your experience and talk to you about how we can grow in our worship life here at Trinity. Your input is valuable and it is through this learning experience that we can reach out further with God’s message of grace and hope. I wish you a healthy and safe and relaxing summer season; One that is filled with family and love and joy and of wonderful memories being made. I pray that in those times when you are resting, after a day filled with activities, when your feet are propped up that God speaks clearly to you and reminds you, “I have called you by name…I love you and you are mine.” Serving with you,

outreach

A DAY AT THE LAKE is our outreach ministry to inner city children. We are making preparations for our guests, from Neighbor Hood House and HoughtonJones Communty Center in Saginaw, to spend a day at Trinity’s camp on Wixom Lake Monday thru Thursday July 25-28. The children will come to the lake to play, sing, do crafts, learn about nature, swim and take boat rides. We are looking for volunteers to help make this a special day for our guests. If you can help please call Pastor Gerald or sign up at the Welcome Center.

power to get the jobs done. The scope of the work will include tasks for skilled as well as unskilled workers. Included will be construction, minor repairs, painting and landscaping. Trinity will also provide lunches for all volunteers on Friday, August 5. This project is also supported by The Dow Chemical Company, local foundations, and other Midland churches. Please mark your calendars for the first week of August, beginning August 1. Look for opportunities to sign up as the project draws closer.

Wednesday Nights Going Strong!

WALK FOR HOPE..AUGUST 7th, 10:00 AM NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY-HACH CENTER A walk for hope is: For any one who has been touched or impacted by depression or suicide To honor the life of a loved one you have lost to suicide To honor the life of someone you know who may be struggling with depression

Summer is flying by and Trinity is abuzz with action. Wednesday Night worship and activities are being well attended and enjoyed! On average, thirty-five people have been meeting for worship at 6:30pm, nineteen for Zumba and ten for Yoga at 7pm. There have been a few walkers each night and always room for more. Folks participating in Zumba and Yoga report making new friends and feeling better and healthier. Worship has been spirit filled and a wonderful way to stay in tune with God as we journey through our week. If you haven’t made it to a Wednesday night, please plan on it. Also, look for more information to come regarding a potluck celebration on August 24. Come and connect with your sisters and brothers and have some fun. Come and be in fellowship with your faith community. Wednesdays at Trinity are the happening place to be!

Mission in Midland Did you know that Trinity is partnering with Midland County Habitat for Humanity to revitalize a neighborhood in downtown Midland? This should be a fun time, a rewarding project and a great opportunity for community outreach. This project needs the support of the adult mission team, the youth mission team, and everyone in between. The specific projects and scope of work will be provided by Habitat for Humanity. Trinity will help provide the person

Proceeds will stay in the Great Lakes Bay Region and will help to continue activities and programs that strive to prevent suicide and educate about suicide and depression. To walk or sponsor or questions contanct Kim Martini-Toth at 989-895-2659 or kmartini@babha.org. CROP WALK 2011 – It’s never too early to start planning. The CROP Walk is on October 2, 2011. The Walk raised nearly $46,000 last year and they have set a goal of $50,000 for this year. Trinity came through wonderfully in 2010 by raising $2092, which was 32.1% more than what we raised in 2009. It would be great if we could meet or beat that total this year. Perhaps you’d like to form a group and find another group to compete with … with the losing group making dinner for the winning team?? Use your imagination! More details will be coming in September. In the meantime if you have any questions, contact Diane Busch on 859-9137.

Just wondering about Washington, D. C…. Actually it is more marveling than wondering. We recently spent three and a half days in our nation’s capital and it was a hot, fascinating and rewarding time. Allow me to try and relate what struck me in Washington using words that try to get at my feelings. Sobering. The Holocaust Museum was a very silent, introspective time as hundreds of people wandered through the halls looking and listening. Parents trying to explain to children. Seniors who had lived through it watching old news reels. During the short, explanatory movie the point was made about the silence of the I was church during this time and how reminded in a religious giants like Martin Luther had said some very anti- way that I’m not in Semitic things which fed the Gladwin, MI, hatred of Jews in Germany. I cringed during that part but felt that diversity is the way of better at the end when the movie openly stated that in 1994 the world— the Evangelical Lutheran Church and our in America repudiated and country. sought forgiveness for Luther’s words. Fascinating. Just walking the streets was like being surrounded by the United Nations or the Tower of Babel. So many languages…so many skin colors…so many styles of dress—I was reminded in a way that I’m not in Gladwin, MI, that diversity is the way of the world—and our country. This confirms for me the magnitude and breadth of God’s creative genius. Awe inspiring. Of course there are the monuments, statues, grand buildings, the White House and Capitol – all dripping with history. And then on Saturday as we walked in front of the White House we witnessed at least four public protests taking place. All peaceful, all fervent. Where but in America— Happy 4th of July! Sad. Lafayette Park just a block or so from the White House is home to the homeless. It is a stark reality that millions of tourists and locals living in high priced condos and apartments walk past these homeless folk every day without so much as a look sideways. But that’s not unique to Washington D. C. is it? Pastor Eugene Peterson writes, “A Christian congregation is the least specialized gathering of human beings on the planet. Where else can you find yourself bracketed by nursing infants on one side, nodding octogenarians on the other, and rubbing shoulders with so many people whom you acknowledge, however grudgingly, as brothers and sisters, and with whom you have nothing in common except your common humanity…and God.” Sounds like Washington D. C. to me – and your town and your congregation. Pastor Kirk Havel, Ret.

Sanctuary Stained Glass Windows We walk right by the windows in the sanctuary countless times, don't we, without most of us knowing their significance. They were manufactured by Conrad Schmitt Studios of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and installed at the time of the construction of the church building completed in 1964. With uniform and translucent colors termed "dalle de verre" or faceted glass in slab construction, they follow a technique developed in Europe the same as pot metal glass of medieval manufacture for use in early Christian churches. Originally set in concrete in an earlier time, now the sparkling glass pieces are set in a type of epoxy. Registered with the Michigan Stained Glass census of Michigan State University some years ago, these striking windows give us a sense of biblical history in our worship experience and are, without a doubt, treasured heirlooms of Trinity. Briefly described (are you up to actually checking this information sometime?): The windows on the north side depict lessons from the Old Testament. · (1) The very first one is the "Yot" symbol, the Hebrew character for Yaweh (God), with the 3 radiating gold spokes as the Trinity. · (2) The hand represents the creation of heaven and earth. · (3) The tree of life reflects the creation of life by our creator. · (4) The creation of man is seen as God's hand reaches to man, giving life and the blessings of water, grass, flowers, and the crown of God's glory. · (5) Man's fall into sin is shown by the sword and flames in God's response. · (6) God's grace to man comes through Jesus and a destructive blow to the serpent as God prepares a new way to destroy the power of evil.

7

(7) Seven is a holy number with its seven- branch candelabra to show us God is present. (8) The Good Shepherd reminds us we are the lambs for whom the cross has been given. (9) Our response to God is depicted in the burning incense as a symbol of worship. (10) God reveals himself to man in the written word of the Bible as seen in the scroll with Jesus as the light of the world. (11) God's law is well known in the tablets of stone with the 10 Commandments. (12) And finally, God reveals himself in his precious son at the manger in Bethlehem.

The windows on the south side (nearest the All Saints Memorial Garden), from the New Testament, are seen as follows: · ·

God the Holy Spirit through the beauty of the white dove descends to us all. (2) The Holy Spirit is alive in each individual as seen in the many gifts received, such as faith, hope, love, gentleness, peace, with the greatest of these as love. (3) The word and the sword represent the alpha and omega in our journey of belief. (4) The sacrament of baptism is evident in the Holy Spirit (descending dove) and a sea shell often used to hold baptismal water. (5) The gold chalice with the red cross sees Christ's blood shed for us and the white center that of Christ's body. (6) "I am the vine and the branch", said Christ. The vine and branch, the tree of life, and the church are all eternal. (7) The phoenix bird represents the resurrection of the dead as in a butterfly emerging from a cocoon to reach the face of God. (8) Everlasting life, as described in the book of Revelation, includes a new heaven and earth, with the crown of creation once more restored for man in eternity.

A more detailed descriptive brochure of these magnificent windows is available. Once again the beauty and thoughtfulness of design and creation here at Trinity come alive as we observe a bit more carefully all that's here for us to see. Think you've never contributed an heirloom to Trinity? Sure you did....when you built this magnificent church in 1964 and put in these wonderful windows. Anita Phillips Gullywoman@msn.com
