Trinity Lutheran Church
Vol 3 Issue 2
February 6th 10:00 am What is this thing called the Congregational meeting and why should I be there? Did I sign up for this when I became a member? Can't the council just figure this stuff out? All of these questions are things that might go through your mind when you hear that the meeting has been scheduled, but honestly, you and I have been directed biblically to be a part of the "mission" we call our Trinity Lutheran Church. Direction is a good thing, and that is the council's job...to suggest the direction, but it is our job as a congregation to step forward and join together to move in a direction. We need to pray as a congregation about what God wants this church's direction to be, what we can do as a congregation for our community and our world. What is it that God would have us do? The council prays about the decisions they make, and they represent each of us. Please take a few moments out of your busy schedules in the next weeks, pick up the Annual Report at the welcome center and read what was accomplished last year. Pray for the people that have been nominated for positions in the church this year, and pray for the direction from God for our Trinity Lutheran Church. Trust that God will lead you in your decisions, come to the meeting prepared to be a part of the future of Trinity Lutheran Church. February 6th, 2011 at 10:00 am. The cinnamon rolls are an added enticement.

pastor's page How are those New Year’s Resolutions coming along? Hopefully by February they have turned into positive habits! Behavioral Psychologists tell us that if you can maintain a behavior for six weeks it just might become a habit. Just think as we start February, you are almost there! If you have turned over a new leaf, made a positive change, congratulations keep up the good workJ. But for those of us, self included, who might be reevaluating those commitments made at the beginning of …… I ask, what happened to the enthusiasm that we had when we threw away the old calendar and put up the new? Where is the energy to follow through on those good intentions? Where is the passion to make a positive change? Why can’t a positive change still be achieved in 2011? Wait don’t give up let me give you some words of encouragement. Recently in an Adult Sunday School class, the following writing of Paul spoke to me in a powerful way “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see everything has become new.” And this verse is premised by this wonderful encouragement “For the love of Christ urges us on.” Maybe the answer to our New Year’s quandaries is in how we embrace our walk with Christ. In our walk with Christ everything is new because Christ
calls us away from the patterns of this world, the same old, into a life of new beginnings. He is constantly calling us to reach out to people we have not yet met. He is encouraging us to love someone who we have not been able to love before. He is challenging us to let go of the past by forgiving the wrongs done and embracing a new future. We worship a God who creates something out of nothing and declares it good. How cool is that! Isn’t it exciting to think that each day Christ is urging us into a new way of being, a new creation, a new experience. What if we were to wake up each day expecting something “new” to happen? In fact, we proclaim a faith in not what is seen (same old) but what is unseen! Our time together as a community of faith in worship and study encourages us into new beginnings, of seeing the world around us as Christ sees the world, to imagine new possibilities, where the patterns (habits) of this world have passed away. I am excited that “in” Christ we have been given a vision of possibilities where faith can lead us. I love that prayer from our Communion liturgy that we use in Saturday night worship that says “Merciful God, send now, in kindness and with your abundant grace, your Holy Spirit to fill this bread and wine with the fullness of Jesus. Let that same Spirit rest on us, converting us from the patterns of this passing world, until we conform to the shape of him whose food we now share.” The shape of Christ is a new creation, a new way of being!

Now is the time to embrace a new beginning. Here are some exciting things happening. Check these out…. On Saturday February 5th at 5:00pm and on Sunday, February 6th at 8:45am all the Musical groups here at Trinity will lead us in a Celebration of Music, giving glory to God. Our theme will be “As God loves us, let us love one another”, based on 1 John 4: 7ff. Our worship on Sunday will lead us into our Annual Congregational Meeting at 10:00am where we will be encouraged to live out God’s love for us in our life together and in the world. Our meeting will be followed by an extended fellowship hour to get to know someone new. Because of the special combined celebrative Worship at 8:45 am there will not be an 11:15 am service that day. In March, as we begin Lent on Ash Wednesday, March 9th we together will embark on “”40 steps to Emmaus, a walking and wellness journey” Our time during Lent will encourage us to renew our body, our soul and our mind. Using the story found in Luke 24:13-49, our six weeks of Lent we will remind us that Christ calls us into a life that integrates faith and health. The excitement is building as we try something new in our life together during Lent. Watch for previews online and on Sunday’s during worship. In Christ new beginnings abound!

food for thought….a note from your new Associate Pastor
"Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." This prayer from Morning Matins is a great way to approach the new day. It is also, I believe, a wonderful way to approach our lives. For as much as we would like to believe we have everything planned out and all our contingency plans in place, life has a way of surprising us. As my family and I prayed and discerned the call to this body of Christ known as Trinity, Midland, we realized that this leap of faith is analogous to what God calls us to on a daily basis. We rise each morning, not knowing exactly what is in store for us; yet as faithful disciples, we trust that God is leading us. As human beings, our tendency is to follow culture and place our faith in ourselves or some other god. However, as Jesus people, we are called to something radically different; to place our faith in the God that created the entire universe and everything in it. Placing our lives in the hands
of the living God is seldom easy, but when we are able to, we find our very spirits in harmony with the One who has given us our daily breath. This sense of giving over our days and lives to God might at first glance seem like futile surrender. But in reality, it is the spirit of hopefulness such as the apostle Paul writes about frequently in his letters in the New Testament. That hope is so powerful that it transforms lives, builds ministry, moves hearts and minds for Christ and in some ways, changes the world. It is into this incredible hope that my family and I have come into your midst. We are excited to see how this hope has shaped and continues to form this congregation into the living body of Christ in this community. We look forward to meeting you, getting to hear your stories and working with you towards God’s mission for His people. Serving with you,
When did Valentine’s Day begin? Who celebrates it? What is it? The most probable candidate for the St. Valentine was a third-century priest in Rome. Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men because he realized single men made better soldiers. Valentinus felt that this was an unjust law, and he performed secret marriages for young lovers in defiance of Claudius. When this was discovered, Valentinus was put to death, on February 14, 269AD. According to legend, while Valentinus was in prison awaiting his death, he fell in love with a young woman, who may have been the daughter of his jailor. He sent her a letter, which he signed, "Love, from your Valentine," and we still use that expression to this day. That note started the custom of exchanging love notes on Valentine’s Day. We all know that love is very important. The Bible tells us in 1 John 3:18, “My children, our love should not be only words, and talk. Our love must be a true love and we should show that love by what we do.” When we listen carefully to what the bible tells us, we learn that we can best love God by loving other people. Take the opportunity of February 14th to show God how much we love Him by loving others as He loves us.
A Tiding Tweet: The Congregational meeting will take place on Feb. 6 at 10:00 am.

Thank You Thanks to TLC’s children and teens! As the result of your Sunday school donations, you were able to give 66 new bath towels to Open Door to serve the homeless in Midland! J.C. Penney assisted in this endeavor by cutting their standard towel price in half for the project. Our new goal from now until spring is to collect donations for socks, underwear, and pajamas for children staying at Shelterhouse. TLC’s youth can either donate money or bring in items. Be aware that stores are often willing to come down on their prices for things purchased in bulk, so monetary donations will more than suffice for this effort. Still, if you come across some great deals, we will be happy to collect your donations as well. Thanks to everyone of you who made the Mission Trip Possible. It was an excellent crew. You will always be special to the Hatcher family, With love and appreciation, Donald, David and Donna To our Trinity family, Our deepest gratitude for your many expressions of encouragement, gifts, both in kind and financial during the Christmas season. We count it our joy to serve among you. Pastor Gerald and Suzanne

What’s Important Instead, he wanted On February 4, 1968 exactly two months before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, he delivered his last sermon at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. In it, he described his preferences for his own funeral. He didn’t want people to mention his Nobel Peace Prize, his other awards or where he went to school; none of that was important, he said.
his eulogist to say King “tried to give his life serving others” and “tried to love somebody.” In that sermon, King also said “everybody can serve,” regardless of background or educational level. The only requirements, he said, were “a heart full of grace” and “ a soul generated by love.”

history alive
just wondering...
Just wondering about the new pastor. Trinity is about to welcome a new pastor to its parsonage; to its office space; to its pulpit, its classrooms, and into the homes of its people. It is another time of change because he will be unlike any of the other pastors who have served the congregation in its almost 70 years of presence in the Midland community. Most are curious/anxious about his arrival – the church staff, whose chemistry will be stirred again; the Call Committee and Council who hope the congregation affirms their recommendation; and the disciples themselves who must work to get to know him and his family, hear a new voice and follow a new leader. I read a quote that said, “The God we know is often the God whom our preacher conveys.” That means we will listen with a hopeful, critical, anxious ear. Remember he will be curious too. Coming to a new congregation is always a bit frightening, but coming to a large and complex congregation like Trinity is even more so. You take most of what Trinity is and offers pretty much for granted – trust me it is not the norm. Cut Pastor Foerster some slack as he settles in and gets to know you and the ropes of serving in this place. Show him and his family your wonderful capacity to love and work together. This is still a new year and with a new pastor it is a great time to look to the future and let God’s surprising grace lead this family forward in mission and ministry. It is not a good time to try and hold on to stale dreams or revisit old negativity – the new pastor wants to make new history with you, not help you hold onto issues that have little or no bearing on the future… except to impede it. This is a time for the people of God to love sight unseen. Just as your new pastor must love you before he knows you, so you must love him before you get to know him. That isn’t always easy but when we consider how God loves us it becomes possible. There is always risk involved in love—Pastor Foerster will risk loving you and you will risk loving him – it isn’t about either of you – it is about imitating how God is with all of us. It is an exciting time for the whole church and for this strong, mission-minded congregation. Relish it. Celebrate it. Support it. Commit to it. God’s love in Jesus travels with you.
“The God we know is often the God whom our preacher conveys.”
Pastor Emeritus Kirk Havel
The paraments in the display case in the lobby reflect the original and oldest as well as the newest set used here at Trinity in addition to several others sets made in years past. On the altar in the original church across the street from the early 1950's to the time the current church was constructed in 1964, changes are reflected in style and desisgn of altar paraments over the decades. Fortunately for Trinity, many members have contributed greatly to the craftsmanship of the various handmade sets of paraments. Fabric has been purchased from around the world for use to enhance the colorful seasons of the church year. Weavers, sewers and lace makers have creatively styled these works of art. Take a moment with your family and stop by the display case to appreciate the rich history of Trinity Lutheran Church in its 68th year.

The Youth will be Hosting a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner on March 8, 2011 from 5-7:30pm. Please come join us in this fellowship dinner prior to Lent. A free will offering will be collected to help cover unbudgeted expenses in the youth program (such as covering the cost of chaperones). Update on Youth Retreats: The Gathering—The SR LYO had a blast at the Gathering between Christmas and New Years. The Gathering was once a long standing tradition at Trinity, but in recent years, it has slipped through the cracks. We brought the Gathering back in 2010, and it was amazing! It was 4 days of faith, food, friends, and fun. We have a new found partnership with Bethlehem in Lansing (they were our roommates), and as a result, we are planning to do some joint-events in the near future! Rev. Tim Graham was the speaker, and he talked about what it means to be more than just ankle deep in our faith. To jump in fully and see where God takes us! Youth Quake—Always a favorite for the Trinity Teens, and this year was no different! The main speakers were a group called “He Said, She Said” in which Dani and Henry held a candid coffee-shop type conversation and discussed the ins and outs of growing up as preteens and teens and how to live a Christian life through all of this. The theme for the weekend was HOPE, and after the ‘mountain top’ experience of a YOUTH LOGO CONTEST! weekend in such a Christian community, we come back We are having a contest for youth with hope for what 2011 has in store for us!
to design a new logo for our youth program! All submission are DUE We are eagerly awaiting Spring, with a lot on the horizon BY FEBRUARY 28 (turned into the office)! No late entries will be acfor the youth program! We have our 6th Grade Retreat coming up at the end of February as well as the 30 Hour cepted. There will be a prize for thest design as well as for the 1 Famine for SR LYO. Then the first weekend in March, the winning nd and 2 runners up!
