July 2014
Summer Update
Dear parents, Welcome to the 2014-15 School Year! In particular, welcome to all families new to Trinity School. Last year I was in your shoes, new to Trinity, and filled with a combination of excitement and nervousness. For those new families, especially the ones whose children are just beginning their educational journey, let me assure you from personal experience that you are joining an incredibly friendly, responsive, and supportive school community. Your family will love it here! In my countless conversations with parents, faculty, staff, students, and alumni over the past year, I heard Trinity described as a close-knit, family-like community where all are known and welcomed. It is a truly special and unique place, with a focus and commitment to elementary-only education, which celebrates children as unique individuals who are nurtured and challenged in a personalized manner. Trinity successfully balances a respect for its proud history and time-tested educational best practices with forward thinking and innovative approaches to learning. Trinity graduates are successful, contributing members of the community who achieve academically, possess a strong work ethic and emotional intelligence, and remain excited and engaged in learning. They utilize the skills of critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and communication (oral and written), which are essential for success in the Information Age. The foundation of all of these attributes is a dedicated faculty who teaches, loves, and inspires students each and every day. I recently read an article that encouraged parents to think of their child’s education as a “learning story.” This narrative metaphor captures the excitement, adventure, discoveries, disappointments, and wonder your child experiences each school year. All too often we, as parents, can fall prey to thinking that every grade or educational experience is simply preparation for the next step, stage, or grade. In doing so, we miss out on the magic of
the moment. My wife and I now reminisce on the special moments of our grown children’s school years, and we wish we had cherished them even more as we were experiencing them. As parents, we need to remind ourselves that all children have their own story that will unfold in its own way. I invite you to enjoy your child’s learning story this year! Administrators and staff members have worked assiduously this summer preparing the building and programs for the 2014-15 school year. Faculty met to work on curriculum and attended local, regional, and national conferences and workshops. I thank everyone for their work and dedication in continuing to enrich Trinity’s program and the experience of each child in our care. In the coming weeks, you will learn more about some specific enhancements for this year, including a new carpool system using RFID technology, our new food service provider – Flik – and physical enhancements to the Dining Hall, a daily morning meeting in each classroom, a Makerspace classroom, and new classroom web pages. These additions to Trinity’s program and facility were thoughtfully vetted and align with the School’s mission and vision, and each promises to enhance the overall Trinity experience. Enjoy these final weeks of summer. I very much look forward to seeing you and your children on Visitation Day, Wednesday, August 13. Again, welcome to the 2014-15 school year. Let’s make it another great year at Trinity School!
Sincerely,
Joe Marshall Head of School
New for 2014-2015
Makerspace Over the summer, the Parent Teacher Resource Room has been transformed into Trinity’s new Makerspace. This space will provide students with the opportunity to explore mathematics, robotics, and engineering in new and dynamic ways. The space will be open to all students and include state of the art technologies such as a 3D printer as well as raw materials, with which students can discover, tinker, and create. Engineering Specialist Kevin Howard will be on hand to facilitate project-based, student-led learning. He will also teach a Third Grade science class within the space.
Dining Services Trinity welcomes Flik Independent School Dining Services to the Trinity community! With their philosophy of “Eat.Learn. Live.,” Flik is committed to providing wholesome, nutritious, and kidfriendly meals prepared from scratch. Head Chef Margaret Cotnoir has been working with the School to understand the unique needs of our community and is creating menus that are tailored to the specific needs of our students and staff. A monthly lunch menu outlining daily offerings will be available on Trinity’s website the first week of school. In alignment with the new food offerings from Flik, updates have been made to the Dining Hall and Kitchen. New service areas and updated furniture have been incorporated to provide a more streamlined and comfortable experience for students and faculty.
Automated Carpool Management This fall, the School will implement a new carpool system called “School Pass,” which utilizes RFID technology (similar to a Peach Pass) to recognize vehicles entering and exiting campus. The goal of this new system is to make classroom dismissal for afternoon carpool more efficient, allowing for students to remain in a classroom setting during afternoon dismissal, and further enhance the School’s campus security measures. An RFID tag will be required for any car used to pick up a student during afternoon carpool. Tags are car-specific and cannot be transferred from one car to another. If a car goes through the carpool line without a tag, the driver will be asked to park in the parent lot and pick student(s) up at a designated area. In the coming weeks, each Trinity family will receive a packet in the mail containing two RFID tags and detailed information regarding the new system. Additional tags are available for a fee of $25. Contact Reginald Haley at rhaley@trinityatl.org to pre-order additional tags.
Classroom Webpages In September, new classroom webpages will be accessible to parents. As part of the School’s continuing efforts to provide more streamlined and clear communication for parents and faculty, Trinity is utilizing an online communication system that will provide parents and faculty with a customized online experience in which they will be able to access school announcements, calendar reminders, homework details, photos, and other class- and grade-specific information throughout the school
year. This cloud-based learning management system, developed by Haiku, was successfully utilized in Fourth through Sixth Grade during the 2013-14 school year. Teachers will provide more information on how the online interface will be utilized for their specific classrooms throughout the first few weeks of the school year. Parents will also receive instructions regarding accessing and using the online interface from the Technology Department in early September.
A Message from the Division Heads
Dear Parents, A host of activities abound during the summer months! Whether looking for seashells at the beach, reading a novel in the backyard, rock climbing at camp, or taking trips around the world, we have continued to grow and learn through our adventures and endeavors. The change of pace and the opportunity to engage in new pursuits enable all of us to gain necessary rest and relaxation. In the
midst of this, though, we eagerly anticipate a fresh year with the new experiences and learning that awaits us. As we prepare to reunite, let’s remember and honor the unique perspectives we each bring. They shape how we learn and grow together while contributing to the richness of our community. The upcoming year will be full of opportunities for the children to explore new ideas and reflect on
their developing understanding of this fascinating world. Learning at Trinity School is intentionally designed by thoughtful teachers, yet at times blossoms spontaneously through teachable moments. In either situation, the children will have the care and commitment of passionate educators guiding them. We look forward to hearing all about your summer activities and seeing the return of the children who make our work meaningful.
Sincerely,
Rhonda Mitchell Early Elementary Division Head
Maryellen Berry Upper Elementary Division Head

Dismissal Times • 3s and Pre-K: 11:45 AM Monday – Friday
School Notices
• Kindergarten: 2 PM Monday – Friday • First Grade through Sixth Grade: 3 PM Monday – Thursday, and 2 PM on Fridays
Carpool Information • Trinity is implementing a new automated carpool system known as SchoolPass, which utilizes RFID technology (similar to a Peach Pass). Information regarding this new system, as well as the required car tags will be mailed to each family in early August. • A traffic control officer will be on duty in the carpool line each morning from 7:30 to 8:05 AM to ensure safety for our parents and children. An officer is also on duty at the crosswalk for 3 PM carpool. It is essential that all drivers follow the traffic control officer’s instructions at all times. Carpool Rules & Safety Measures Arrival
• Faculty and staff will be on hand to open car doors. Do not let Early Elementary Division children out of the car until a teacher opens the car door. • Faculty will be dismissed a few minutes prior to the start of school to be in class to start the day. Once faculty members are gone, parents must park and walk their children to Reception. • All children must be dropped off via the carpool lane (with the exception of new 3s and Pre-K
through the first full week of school). • Car trunks and hatch-backs may not be opened in carpool line. • Please make sure children’s seatbelts remain fastened until the car has come to a complete stop in the carpool line. • Sixth Graders and cars carrying four or more Trinity students may use the Visitor Lot for Morning Carpool. Dismissal
• Please be on time to pick up your child. Teachers often have obligations immediately following dismissal. Faculty and staff are not available to supervise late pickups. • Remain in your car in the carpool line until children are placed in the car by the teachers on duty. • Since children need the full attention of the driver when being placed in the car, cell phone use is prohibited in the carpool lane. • Car trunks and hatch-backs may not be opened in the carpool line. Procedure for Changes in Carpool
• An important Trinity rule is that parents notify the School if their child is not going home in his or her normal carpool at the regular dismissal time. Parents will have the ability to communicate carpool changes through the new automated School Pass system. Information regarding this new online application will be sent to parents in early August. In addition to contacting the School, please be sure to notify your carpool driver of any change in routine.
First through Sixth Grade Carpool Considerations
• Afternoon carpool ends by approximately 3:15 or 3:20 PM. If you have an emergency and will arrive after 3:15 PM, please let Reception know in advance. Late drivers need to park and come into the School to pick up their children, who will be taken to Extended Programs after 3:20 PM.
Bookbags • Each child in the 3s and Pre-K classes should bring their blue and white Trinity bookbag clearly marked with his/her name on the outside. All new 3s and Pre-K students have received a Trinity bookbag as a part of their welcome to the School. • Older children (K-Sixth) who are more responsible for their personal belongings may want to use a backpack or another type of bookbag that is comfortable for them. It is strongly recommended that K through Fourth Grade students use a backpack and not a rolling bookbag, because of space concerns in the classrooms. The use of a bookbag with the Pullman attachment, so that children are not placing undue pressure on their backs, is strongly recommended for Fifth and Sixth Grades only. Although we do not use a large number of textbooks at Trinity, we are mindful of the effect that heavy weight can have on growing bodies as children begin to take more books and materials home and the weight of the bookbag increases.
Meals During School
Lunch
Morning Snack
• Kindergarten – Sixth Grade children and those 3s and Pre-K students who stay for Lunch Bunch (Extended Programs) are provided a hot lunch. Monthly menus from the School’s new food service provider, Flik, can be found on Trinity’s website under the “Quicklinks” tab or in the Parent Resource Center on the website. No lunches should be brought from home. The School provides water, milk, and orange juice.
• All classes have a mid-morning snack. We ask that you send a nutritious snack in easily opened containers. A few options are fresh vegetables or fruits and whole wheat crackers. Please do not send in items that are high in sugar, such as cookies or candy. Drinks are not necessary as water is available in the classroom. • Early Elementary Division children should bring their snack in a container with the child’s name clearly visible on the outside. • Teachers will inform you if any students in the class have serious allergy problems. • More specific guidelines regarding food allergies will be communicated in August.
• Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child. The cost is $5 per parent, which can be paid at the School’s Reception Desk.

Extended Programs
Carol Meadows Director of Extended Programs
The upcoming semester of Extended Programs promises to be another great success! Registration took off with a roaring start in July, and many of the Special Classes have reached capacity. There are still many opportunities for those students that have not registered yet. Registration re-opens on Monday, August 4. Any changes can also be made through the Extended Programs Office from August 4 through September 19. Please note that when registering for any of the Extended Programs opportunities, you may chose to pay using the “paylater” option, and all Extended Programs charges will be reflected on your October 1 bill from the School. We are also excited to announce a change for Lunch Bunch students! The children will be eating their lunch in the Activity Room each day, instead of in the Dining Hall as in previous years. This location change
New Special Classes for Fall 2014 • Fashion Workshop • Pre-K and Kindergarten Golf • Knitting and Needlework • Literacy through Art • Super Scientists
will provide a quieter atmosphere, less transition time, and more comfortable seating for these younger students. The School’s new food service provider, Flick, will offer hot lunch and sandwich choices each day. Lunch will begin at 12 PM and end at 12:30 PM, allowing time for children to enjoy time on the playground before attending a Special Class or the activity portion of Lunch Bunch. Core Classes begin on the first day of school and Special Classes begin the week of August 18. You may sign your child up for any of the Core Classes on a drop-in basis by notifying the Extended Programs staff through the new School Pass online system. More information regarding the use of this system will be sent to parents in the coming weeks.

Trinity School Parents’ Association
Dear Parents, I hope you are doing well and enjoying time with family and friends amidst the slower pace of the summer months. As the new school year approaches, Trinity teachers, staff, administrators, and parent leaders have been busy preparing for the arrival of your children’s smiling faces in August. I am honored to serve as President of the Trinity School Parents’ Association (TSPA) this year. In this role, I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with TSPA’s parent leaders, including Grade Level Representatives (GLRs), TSPA Committee Chairs, and Room Parents. Please know that your GLRs and Room Parents are available to you as a resource now and throughout the school year. GLRs serve as a link between you, TSPA, the Administration, and the Board of Trustees. GLRs are available to you for school-related issues, questions or comments, which will always be handled with discretion. Room Parents will help keep you connected with your child’s class and teachers and can assist with classroom specific questions. I encourage you to get to know your GLRs and Room Parents and feel free to contact them throughout the year. Trinity School’s administration, faculty, and staff continually seek to improve and enhance the learning experience for our children. One new development this year will be the school-wide rollout of a customized online communication system, which will act as a central location for parents to access school announcements, calendar reminders, homework details, photos, and other
class-and grade-specific information throughout the school year. This cloud-based learning management system, developed by Haiku, was successfully utilized in Fourth through Sixth Grade during the 2013-14 school year. It has proven to provide parents and teachers with a more efficient and rich means of communication. Please keep an eye out for more information regarding this new system in the first few weeks of the school year. TSPA has also made an effort to simplify teacher gifts during the holiday season. By tightening the association’s budget and modestly increasing TSPA dues, we will be able to provide holiday gifts to the entire faculty and staff, including Specials teachers, on behalf of the families of Trinity School. We hope that this will knock one item off your to do list at such a busy time of year. One of the unique qualities of the Trinity community is the spirit of volunteerism. I am constantly amazed by the many ways that parents offer their time, talents, and energy to this special place. Opportunities to volunteer come in all shapes and sizes and can be flexible with work schedules and other commitments. We hope that you will consider the many volunteer positions available and dip your feet into the water… if you haven’t yet taken the plunge! Please feel free to reach out to fellow parents for suggestions or guidance on different volunteer roles. Not only will you support Trinity School, but you can also demonstrate to your children the importance of contributing to the community through volunteerism.
In this mailing, you’ll find descriptions of some of the many volunteer opportunities available this year. Please review the enclosed Signup Sheet and consider the available options. There will also be a chance to sign up for classroom volunteer roles at Back-to-School Night. I wish you a restful, safe, and funfilled summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the start of the school year!
Warmly,
Jenny Latz TSPA President

Community Service Trinity School believes that serving our community begins with our youngest students and evolves as our children grow and mature. In order for community service to be meaningful for our students while also making an impact, Trinity’s Community Service Program is designed to include grade-level specific activities that are developmentally appropriate. Along with the grade level specific initiatives, there are school-wide community service projects including collecting for UNICEF at Halloween and Pride for Parents during the winter holidays. Parents, administration, teachers, and student leadership work collaboratively for the design, implementation, and support of community service.
Three-Year-Olds and Pre-Kindergarten: The Pajama Program The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children. Trinity students learn about the need for nighttime comforts and donate new pajamas and books along with student-made cards in cheerfully wrapped packages.
