Holy Eucharist: Rite II The Feast of All Saints’ Day (Anticipated) The Welcome of New Members & The Baptism of Jack Oliver Neuman
October 27, 2019
Breakfast 9:00am Eucharist 10:00am
Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together. We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do. We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other at the Table of love set for us week after week. Welcome Home! May you never forget you are loved, Lisa Tucker-Gray
Some notes about Sundays at Trinity Claiming our Episcopal identity as a progressive, creative, inclusive, downtown community of faith has led us towards reimagining how our Sunday mornings might reflect our core values more emphatically. To do so we start with a Free Community Breakfast at 9:00 upstairs breaking bread and barriers together. We encourage everyone in our neighborhood and in our faith community to join us to eat and serve each other upstairs before we move down to the sanctuary to continue worship together at 10:00. Additionally, we have framed and grounded our liturgy in our Episcopal heritage offered to us through our Book of Common Prayer using the Rite II form for the Holy Eucharist. We have made the decision, as many churches have, to create what is called an “all-inclusive bulletin.” This is a gesture of welcome and hospitality encouraging all to participate fully as we sing and pray together. For those familiar with our tradition, you will recognize the structure of the service while perhaps noticing new resources and translations of texts as we move ever closer towards the goal of greater inclusion and relevancy as we practice and deepen our faith as followers of Christ. Finally, we take seriously Jesus’ invitation to come as you are- we are and will be, with God’s help, evermore diverse in our backgrounds and experiences in a worshipping community. Please know all are welcome and wanted- and we gather together bringing all of who we are each week, so that we may then go out into the world ready to share God’s love in all we say and do.

( From Prayers for an Inclusive Church)
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Holy God, giver of blessing to hungry and hated, overturner of ordered tables of friendship and enmity: teach us a new way of being beyond reward, beyond revenge; that we may do to others as we would have them do to us; through Jesus Christ, who prays for all who crucify him. Amen.
(Please be seated for the Lessons.) 3
The First Lesson Reader:
Daniel 7:1-3,15-18
A reading from Daniel.
In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: "As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever—for ever and ever." Reader: People:
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. Thanks be to God.
The psalm
Psalm 149 This season we will chant the psalm (refrain and verses) together. The refrain will be repeated as noted throughout and the tone for the verses is listed below. (REFRAIN)
(TONE)
REFRAIN
Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise his Name in the dance; let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people and adorns the poor with victory. REFRAIN
Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; let them be joyful on their beds. Let the praises of God be in their throat and a two-edged sword in their hand; 4
REFRAIN
To wreak vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples; To bind their kings in chains and their nobles with links of iron; To inflict on them the judgment de-creed; this is glory for all his faithful people. Halle-lujah! REFRAIN
The second Lesson Reader:
Ephesians 1:11-23
A reading from Ephesians.
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Reader: People:

The Gospel Officiant: People:
Luke 6:20-31 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets." "But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 6
"Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Thanksgiving Over the Water At this time all children in the congregation are invited to join Lisa at the baptismal font. The Priest pours the water into the baptismal font. Priest: People: Priest: People:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Priest touches the water. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
The Baptism
Book of Common Prayer pg. 307
The family and Godparents come to the font, presenting the candidate. The candidate is presented to the Priest who pours water on the candidate saying: Jack, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Priest marks the forehead of the candidate with the sign of the cross using chrism oil saying: Jack, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen. 10
A baptism candle is then lit from the Paschal candle and handed to the Godparents Jack, receive the light of Christ. Amen. When the family has returned to their seats, the Priest continues, Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Priest and People: We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. Amen. Priest:
Let us welcome the newly baptized.
Asperging Today, we are honored to welcome 7 seminarians from across our diocese as visitors; Robin Woodbury, Leah Romanelli, Jon Coventry, Lonny Gatlin, Noah Sutterisch, Kayla Mravec and Mo Wood. Mark A. Miller Enriching Our Worship Prayer 3
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy: 12
Sanctus
Holy, Holy, Holy
Grayson Warren Brown
Then the Celebrant continues: Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.” And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Celebrant and People: Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home.
13
Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Blessed are you now and for ever. AMEN

Our actual Giving Campaign will not start until November, but these conversations, like everything we do, will be grounded in the belief that building up the Kinship of God is always the place from which we begin. And what better way than to spend some time sharing and hearing about how God is showing up in our lives. Remaining “Shining Our Light” Gatherings in November.
