Holy Eucharist: Rite II Annual Meeting Sunday

Breakfast 9:00am Eucharist 10:00am
Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together. We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do. We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other at the Table of love set for us week after week. Welcome Home! May you never forget you are loved, Lisa Tucker-Gray
Notes about Trinity at Epiphany SUNDAY, JANUARY 26, 2020
THE 3RD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
The season of Epiphany is about celebrating how God has shown God’s own self to us through the person, acts and teachings of Jesus. The Epiphany recognizes and celebrates several things, all connected with the beginnings of Jesus Christ’s work of manifesting (revealing) God. The Feast of Epiphany refers first to the coming of the Wise Men to Jesus. Here we celebrate the revelation of Jesus Christ to the whole world. This is a celebration of the mystery of promise. The theme of this season is Jesus Christ’s manifesting God to humans. In this way, Epiphany has a deeper meaning than Christmas, for instead of simply celebrating the birth of Christ, it testifies to the whole purpose of the incarnation: the manifestation of God in Jesus Christ beginning with his birth (and recognition by the Magi) and with his baptism and ministry. During these weeks in Epiphany, we hear of Jesus’ mighty signs (miracles) and teachings as he lives out this manifestation of God. As we hear these stories, we commemorate those works and teachings of Jesus which led up to the final events in Jerusalem—his death and resurrection. WELCOME Collect of the Day Celebrant: People: Celebrant:
People:
(from Prayers for an Inclusive Church)
The Lord be with you. And also with you. God of all people you sent your Son into the shrouded world into the borderlands; may his dawning light give hope to the broken, the persecuted, the alien and the excluded, that we might feel the kingdom drawing near and turn to follow him; through Jesus Christ, the morning star. Amen.
(Please be seated for the Lessons.)
The First Lesson Reader:
Isaiah 9: 1-7
A reading from Isaiah
There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Psalm
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 27: 1, 4-9
(From Psalms for Praying)
The Psalm will be chanted responsively by half verse. The cantor will begin, and the congregation will respond. TONE
Love is my light and my salvation, whom shall / I fear? Love is the strength of my life, of whom shall I / be afraid? One thing have I asked of Love, that I shall / ever seek: That I might dwell in the heart of Love all the days / of my life, To behold the beauty of my be- / loved, and to / know love’s plan.
4
For I shall hide in Love’s heart in the day of / trouble, As in a tent in / the desert, away from the noise of / my fears. And I shall rise above my / struggles, my pain, Shouting blessings of gratitude in / Love’s Heart And singing melodies of praise to my / Beloved. Hear, O my Beloved, when I cry / aloud, be gracious and / answer me! You have said, “Seek / my face.” My / heart responds, “Your face, my Beloved, do / I seek; hide not your / face from me.” Do not turn from me, You who have been my / refuge. Enfold me in your strong arms, O / Blessed One. Though my father and mother may not under- / stand me, You, my Beloved, know me / and love me.
The second Lesson Reader:
1 Corinthians 1:10-18
A reading from First Corinthians
Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
I walked across an empty land I knew the pathway like the back of my hand I felt the earth beneath my feet Sat by the river, and it made me complete Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting tired, I need something to rely on So tell me when, you’re gunna let me in I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin And if you have a minute, why don’t we go Talk about it somewhere we should all know This could be an end or a beginning So why don’t we go, Somewhere we should all know.
The Gospel
Matthew 4: 12-23
Celebrant: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Sermon Affirmation of Faith
The Rev. Dr. Lisa Tucker-Gray (From Liturgy for the Whole Church: Multigenerational Resources)
(Please stand as you are able.) We believe in God who said, “Let there be light,” and there was! With that light, God made the world and all people in whom, and through whom, the Light burns on, strong and true. We believe! We believe in Jesus, the true Light, who went down to darkness to overcome death, and rose again, to unveil our own brightness, in the victory of whose love a path shines home to God’s heart where all will live forever. We believe! We believe in the Spirit, blazing with hope, speaking the truth into every darkness, warming our lives with God’s gifts and call. We believe! We believe in the church, where God’s Light is praised, and from where we are sent to love and serve the world. We believe! We ask today that a gentle breath blow from above on the light that is in us, the light that is among us, and enflame us anew with the courage of love. Enflame us, O God! Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Please stand as you are able.)
Intercessor: Creator of All, you have promised to hear when we pray in the name of your Son. Therefore in confidence and trust we pray for the Church. God, enliven the Church for its mission: People: that we may be salt of the earth and light to the world.
Intercessor: Breathe fresh life into your people. People: Give us power to reveal Christ in word and action. Intercessor: Creator of all, lead us and every people into ways of justice and peace. People: That we may respect one another in freedom and truth. Intercessor: Awaken in us a sense of wonder for the earth and all that is in it. People: Teach us to care creatively for its resources. Intercessor: God of truth, inspire with your wisdom those whose decisions affect the lives of People:
others that all may act with integrity and courage.
Intercessor: Give grace to all whose lives are linked with ours. People: May we serve Christ in one another, and love as he loves us. Intercessor: We pray for those on our Trinity Prayer List (names to be offered) and those we now name silently or aloud. (Pause) God of hope, comfort and restore all who suffer in body, mind or spirit. People: May they know the power of your healing love.
Intercessor: Make us willing agents of your compassion. People: Strengthen us as we share in making people whole. Intercessor: Give comfort to those who mourn. People: Bring them peace in their time of loss. Intercessor: We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory. People: May their example inspire and encourage us. Celebrant: Lord, you have called us to serve you. People: Grant that we may walk in your presence: your love in our hearts, your truth in our minds, your strength in our wills; until, at the end of our journey, we know the joy of our homecoming and the welcome of your embrace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION OF SIN & ABSOLUTION Celebrant:
(From Wonderings Through Life and Other Such Nonsense)
The prophet speaks of the coming light of God which calls all the people of the earth to come together in God’s realm of shalom. Let us confess the ways in which we have rejected God’s vision of wholeness.
Celebrant and People: God of light and darkness, we have seen the glimmer of your star-light beckoning to us, but we have turned away and followed other paths. We confess that we have not loved you with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive us, Holy One. Strengthen our faltering steps and guide us in your holy way of peace.
Celebrant: People:
Lift up your eyes and see the grace of God poured out into our lives. The light of God shines through the darkness. Our hearts rejoice for Christ is in our midst. Amen.
THE PEACE Celebrant: People:
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant: You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:
Sanctus
Holy, Holy, Holy

Ken Canedo
Celebrant continues Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured our for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant:
(The New Zealand Prayer Book, from the Anglican Church in Aotearoa)
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.
