The Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost Morning Devotion Trinity@316    August 21, 2022 10:00 am

Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us.

This morning’s Trinity@316 service will be a Morning Devotion. This format is a part of our ancient Episcopal tradition and the format we are invited to use when a priest is not present to celebrate the Eucharist (also known as Communion). All the other elements of the service will be offeredmusic, prayers, scripture and a sermon. This is a wonderful opportunity to lift up and celebrate the gifts of leadership in our congregation. We are so glad you are here to join us today.

And may you never forget you are loved, Priest Lisa

Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity!

For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that, and we believe that church can and should be different. We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we understand that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative. In our faith community, we believe in the important work that is our shared musical language. We work to choose music and lyrics encompassing many walks of life; to give voice to different perspectives of Divine Love using both traditional and contemporary interpretation. Our hope is that the chosen words of our imperfect languages may resonate with you an eternal Truth, with all pronouns seen as holy and an expression of the expansive nature of Love. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. Our reason for being is bigger than any one of us and together we strive to be about something greater than Soourselves.thankyou

for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors, and for giving this place, these people, this expansive and ancient tradition an opportunity to take root in your heart. May we all find our way into this community of Love as we intentionally make room for each and all of us drawing the circle wider, and wider still together, week after week.

Collect of the Day Prayers for the Inclusive Church

Leader: Let us pray. God of the Sabbath, this is the day and this is the hour when women long oppressed learn to stand with dignity, when your healing escapes our desire for control: may your joy stretch the fabric of our hearts and inspire us to loose each other’s bonds; through Jesus Christ, the shamer of the powerful and the raiser of the dead. Amen.

People: And also with you.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Reader: A reading from Isaiah. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call the sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, serving your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

The First Reading Isaiah 58:9b 14

Bless the Beloved, O my soul, and all that is within me; I bless your Holy Name. Bless the Beloved, O my soul, and remember the goodness of Love.

The cantor will offer the first line and the congregation joins on the second.

You forgive our stubbornness, You heal our disease, You save us from the snares of fear, You crown us with steadfast Love and Mercy, You satisfy our every need and renew our spirit like the eagle’s.

Through You comes peace and justice for all who are oppressed. You make known the pathway of truth, and guide us along the way. You are merciful and gracious, quelling our anger with your patient Love.

Reader: A reading from Hebrews

You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. (For they could not endure the order that was given, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death." Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear.") But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven." This phrase, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of what is shaken that is, created things so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire.

The Gospel Luke 13:10 17

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.

Sermon Jeffery Albright, Trinity member

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

We believe that people can change, and that God keeps pulling us to life and to a new world of joy and peace. Amen.

We believe in the Church of Jesus Christ, a community where we find companions and courage for the struggles of life, where we grow in our understanding of the faith, through worship, prayer, nurture and service.

We believe in the God of Life, who creates and loves people, who acts in history. We believe in Jesus of Nazareth, who is our brother, who wants not to be idolized but to be followed. We believe that we dwell in the presence of the Holy Spirit; without Her we are nothing; filled with Her we are able to become creative, lively and free.

We believe that God has a use for us in this time and place, that though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we are called to be instruments of God’s peace. We believe in living, hoping, laughing, and enjoying the good of the earth.
