The Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost Morning Devotion Trinity@316 August 28, 2022 10:00 am
Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity!
This morning’s Trinity@316 service will be a Morning Devotion. This format is a part of our ancient Episcopal tradition and the format we are invited to use when a priest is not present to celebrate the Eucharist (also known as Communion). All the other elements of the service will be offeredmusic, prayers, scripture and a sermon. This is a wonderful opportunity to lift up and celebrate the gifts of leadership in our congregation. We are so glad you are here to join us today.

And may you never forget you are loved, Priest Lisa
Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us.
May we all find our way into this community of Love as we intentionally make room for each and all of us drawing the circle wider, and wider still together, week after week.
In our faith community, we believe in the important work that is our shared musical language. We work to choose music and lyrics encompassing many walks of life; to give voice to different perspectives of Divine Love using both traditional and contemporary interpretation. Our hope is that the chosen words of our imperfect languages may resonate with you an eternal Truth, with all pronouns seen as holy and an expression of the expansive nature of Love. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. Our reason for being is bigger than any one of us and together we strive to be about something greater than Soourselves.thankyou for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors, and for giving this place, these people, this expansive and ancient tradition an opportunity to take root in your heart.
For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that, and we believe that church can and should be different.
We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we understand that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative.

Leader: The Lord be with you.
For the beginning of pride is sin, and the one who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brings upon them unheard of calamities, and destroys them completely.
Reader: A reading from Sirach.
Leader: Let us pray.

People: And also with you.
The Lord overthrows the thrones of rulers, and enthrones the lowly in their place.
The First Reading Sirach 10:12-18
Pride was not created for human beings, or violent anger for those born of women.
The Lord lays waste the lands of the nations, and destroys them to the foundations of the earth. He removes some of them and destroys them, and erases the memory of them from the earth.
The Lord plucks up the roots of the nations, and plants the humble in their place.
The beginning of human pride is to forsake the Lord; the heart has withdrawn from its Maker.
Inviting God, laying open your table to the deviant and deranged, setting a place for the foreign and unwanted: overturn our tables of power and teach us to receive bread from strange and wounded hands; through Jesus Christ, the One given for all. Amen.

The unloving are witness to this; who knows when the seed will find a fertile heart? The fruits of those who know Love are blessing to all!

Light penetrates the darkness for those who face their fears; Love stands by them with mercy and forgiveness. It goes well for those who are loving and kind, who live their days with justice and integrity. They become co creators with the Divine One; they bless the world with their presence.
Abundance and wholeness will be their heritage, and truth will be their banner.
The cantor will offer the first line and the congregation is invited to join on the second.
The Psalm Psalm 112 Psalms for Praying
In times of trouble, they know not fear; their hearts are firm, trusting in your Loving Companion Presence. Yes, their hearts are steady, they are not afraid, even their enemies are blessed by their love. They are generous and give freely; the needy are offered shelter and food; Justice and mercy make their home there; and their righteousness endures forever.
Praises be to You, O Gracious One! Blessed are those who reverence the Holy One, who greatly delight in the Word! For they dwell with Love, and their children will learn of peace and justice.
Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and Throughforever. him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honor by all and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." So, we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper. I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?"

Gradual
Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

Sending Hymn Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Hymnal 1982 #376 See Go in peace to love and serve the Lord! Thanks be God!
Give us what we need, day by day, to keep body and soul together, because clever as you have made us, we still owe our existence to you. We recognize that to be reconciled with you, we must live peaceably and justly with other human beings, putting hate and bitterness behind us. We are torn between our faith in your goodness and our awareness of the evil in your creation, so deliver us from the temptation to despair.
