Collect of the Day Leader: People: Leader:

Prayers for the Inclusive Church

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

God our Thief, you steal from us our dead complacent hearts and kindle a new flame: take form our hands the burden of worthless things, and make them ready to receive a greater gift: the love of a Servant King; through Jesus Christ, the Son of Man. Amen.

Opening Statement Priest: People: Priest: People:

There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God’s call to us; One source of Love, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Creator of us all.

The First Reading Reader:

Genesis 15:1-6

A reading from Genesis.

The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir." But the word of the Lord came to him, "This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir." He brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness.

The Psalm

Psalm 33: 12-22

Psalms for Praying

The cantor will offer the first line and the congregation joins on the second.

For, the Beloved dwells in every heart that is open and free; Into our hands, into our hearts does the beloved surrender, That we might do with Love what we will. Do we not know, that the nations are not saved by military might, just as generals are not saved by their own strength? All such arms are the outward expression of greed in fearful hearts; They will reap only despair and destruction. Behold, the love of the Beloved is stronger than ten thousand bombs, more to be desired that the wealth of all nations. Do we not know that to dwell in the heart of the Beloved is the promise to every nation, the birthright of all people, the journey to life eternal? Our soul yearns for the Beloved, for peace, joy, and assurance. Yes, our hearts are glad and sing songs of gratitude, Praising the name of the Holy One! May every nation come to live in the steadfast love of the Spirit of Truth. May every people hope in Love Divine.

The SECOND READING Reader:

Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

A reading from the Book of Hebrews.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old-- and Sarah herself was barren-- because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore." All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

It is Well with My Soul

LEVAS #188

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like seabillows roll; Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. It is well with my soul, It is well, it is well with my soul. And, Lord, hast the day when the faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend, ‘Even so’ it is well with my soul. It is well with my soul, It is well, it is well with my soul.

The Gospel Deacon: People:

Luke 12:32-40

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. "But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour."

The Priest says: Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and forever. Amen.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER The Priest pours the water into the baptismal font. Priest: People: Priest: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, God, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. At the following words, the Priest touches the water. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BAPTISM Book of Common Prayer #307 The members of the extended family and Godparents/Sponsors come to the font, presenting the candidates. The candidate is presented to the Priest who pours water on the candidate saying: Dontae/Kamyia, I baptize you in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer & Sustainer Amen. The Priest marks the forehead of the candidate with the sign of the cross using chrism oil saying: Dontae/Kamyia you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever. Amen. A baptism candle is then lit from the Paschal candle and handed to the Godparents. Dontae/Kamyia, receive the light of Christ. Amen.

9

Priest: Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon Dontae and Kamyia the gift of eternal love and have raised them to a new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them inquiring minds and discerning hearts, the courage to will and to persevere, spirits to know and love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Once the candidate has received the sacrament of baptism he is welcomed. Priest: Let us welcome the newly baptized.

A Wee Worship Book, Iona Community

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

We praise you, O God, whom eternity cannot contain, for coming to earth and entering time in Jesus. We praise you for his life which informs our living, for his compassion which changes our hearts, for his clear speaking which contradicts our harmless generalities, for his disturbing presence, his innocent suffering, his fearless dying, his rising to life breathing forgiveness and restoring us forever to you. For these gifts we praise and worship you. 10

All that is spectacular, all that is plain have their origin in you. All that is lovely, all who are loving, point to you as their fulfillment. Therefore we gladly join our voices to the song of the Church on earth and in heaven:

Sanctus

The Hymnal 1982 S-130 from Deutsche Messe by Franz Schubert Arr. Richard Proulx

Jesus was always the guest. In the homes of Peter and Jairus, Martha and Mary, Joanna and Susanna, he was always the guest. At the meal tables of the wealthy where he pled the case of the poor, he was always the guest. Upsetting polite company, befriending isolated people, welcoming the stranger, he was always the guest. But here, at this table, he is the host. Those who wish to serve him must first be served by him. Those who want to follow him must first be fed by him. For this is the table where God intends us to be nourished. This is the time when Christ can make us new. So come, you who hunger and thirst for a deeper faith, for a better life, for a fairer world. Jesus Christ, who has sat at our tables, now invites us to be his guests. On their last night together, and as they were sitting at a meal, Jesus gave thanks, took a piece of bread and broke it. He gave it to the disciples saying, “This is my body. It is broken for you. Do this to remember me.”

11

Later, after they had eaten, he took a cup of wine, gave thanks and said, “This cup is the new relationship with God made possible because of my death. Drink this all of you, to remember me.” So now we do as Jesus did. We offer this bread and this wine to each other, and proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We ask that these signs of your love be filled with the fullness of Jesus. Let that same love rest on us, converting us from the patterns of this passing world, until we conform to the shape of him whose food we now share. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray

Stephen Best

Great Love; the root and sap of our evolving fullness, Nudge us forward in our creative potential So we may flourish for the common good. In each mindful moment, help us recognize that We free ourselves from the ghosts of our past In the release we grant those who have harmed us. Keep us focused on what is right Make us thirsty for what is just. For it is love, that knows the way, Shows the way, becomes the way, To the fulfilment of our eternal call. Amen
