The Hymnal 1982 #481

Welcome Collect of the day Celebrant: People: Celebrant:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. You who are, who were, who are to come, before whose judgment all fades away that is not love: save us from the violence that seeks to claim our hearts so we might hear a different voice and belong to you in truth, through Jesus Christ, the wounded king of all. Amen

Please be seated for the Lessons

The First Lesson Reader:

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14

A reading from the first book of Daniel

As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. 3

As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. Reader: People:

The psalm

Psalm 93

The cantor will sing the refrain before the congregation. Refrain

Gather #75

1 The LORD is King; he has put on splendid apparel; * the LORD has put on his apparel and girded himself with strength. 2 He has made the whole world so sure * that it cannot be moved; 3 Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; * you are from everlasting. Refrain 4 The waters have lifted up, O LORD, the waters have lifted up their voice; * the waters have lifted up their pounding waves. 5 Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, * mightier is the LORD who dwells on high. 6 Your testimonies are very sure, * and holiness adorns your house, O LORD, for ever and for evermore. Refrain 5

The second Lesson Reader:

Revelation 1:4b-8

A reading from Revelation

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Reader: People:

The Gospel Celebrant: People:

John 18:33-37 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. Celebrant: People:

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

New Zealand Prayer Book

(Please stand as you are able.)

We believe in the God of Life, who creates and loves people, who acts in history and who promises never to leave us alone. We believe in Jesus of Nazareth, who is our brother, who wants not to be idolized but to be followed. We believe that we dwell in the presence of the Holy Spirit; without Her we are nothing; filled with Her we are able to become creative, lively and free. We believe in the Church of Jesus Christ, a community where we find companions and courage for the struggles of life, where we grow in our understanding of the faith, through worship, prayer, nurture and service. We believe that God has a use for us in this time and place, that though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we are called to be instruments of God’s peace. We believe in living, hoping, laughing, and enjoying the good of the earth. We believe that people can change, and that God keeps pulling us to life and to a new world of joy and peace. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Refrain

Ken Medema (1970)

Intercessor:

Open our minds, O Creator, that we might dream a Church reconciled, knowing your love so abundantly it bursts with a passion for ministry, a desire to give completely, and a sense of generosity that seeks only to give back.

Intercessor:

Open our hearts, O Giver of Gifts, to be transformed by the mighty outpouring of your compassion, so that we will seek to serve others with humility, integrity and urgency as your servants.

Refrain Intercessor:

Open our eyes, O Sanctifier of Life, to the hurts and needs of others. Teach us to see where our own abilities and resources - and the world’s deep hunger – meet.

Intercessor:

Open our hands, O Spirit, to be your instruments of witness. Help us to work without caution, serve without recognition, to do justice, to love kindness, and to serve humbly with you, our God.

Refrain Intercessor:

Open our memories, O Redeemer of All, as we tenderly remember those who have died, especially those we now name….. Help us honor the wisdom of those who devoted their lives to service, and who generously gave of their time and resources.

Celebrant:

Nurturing God, your love is free, your compassion unconditional, and your mercy infinite. Grant that we may discover the joy of living lives from a place of radical generosity, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ our friend. In the name of Christ. Amen.

10

The Confession of Sin & Absolution Celebrant:

Let us confess our sins to God. (silence may be kept)

Celebrant and People: Creator God, full of grace and truth, you create us from nothing and give us life abundant. You give us new life in the water of baptism. You never turn your face from us, nor cast us aside. We confess we have turned against you and against our neighbor, in thought, word and deed. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant:

All:

May the God of love bring you back to all that is good in you. May you be forgiven of all wrongdoing, and welcome God’s grace anew in your life this day. May God’s assurance strengthen your resolve to begin again in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: People:

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic Prayer #3

(Please stand as you are able.) Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant continues: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; you brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

12

Sanctus

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

LEVAS 252

The celebrant continues: Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

13

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: All:

Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory!

Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Blessed are you now and forever. AMEN.

14

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant:

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

The Fraction: Breaking of the Bread & Invitation Celebrant: All:

We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

Celebrant:

The gifts of God for the people of God. Holy food, for holy people.

(Please be seated until you are invited to come forward to receive communion.) We welcome ALL to come forward to receive the bread and wine we offer as a sign of God’s love in and for our lives. (We have bread, gluten-free wafers, wine, and grape juice.) To receive the bread—put your hands together (palms up) in front of you. Either eat the bread and drink from the chalice or dip the bread in the chalice. If you are unable to come forward and wish to have Communion brought to you, please inform a greeter. Need prayer for yourself or someone else? During communion, come to the prayer station near the back of our worship space. Prayers may be requested for healing, medical procedures, safe travels, and more. Blessings for birthdays, anniversaries, and other events may also be requested. This can also be a time of quiet prayer for you to see out God's love in silence. There is also a basket where you can write down your prayer requests; the team will keep you in their prayers. All are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity, but no one is required; know that you are welcome and wanted just as you are.

Trinity Episcopal Church Progressive  Inclusive  Creative  Downtown 316 Adams Street, Toledo, OH trinitytoledo.org 419-243-1231

Trinity Pages #LOVE IS THE WAY! Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that, and believe that church can be different. We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week. May you never forget you are loved,

Lisa (lisa@trinitytoledo.org) (Rector)
